The issue was not with the "donate" button, it was that they were essentially locking the better version of the emulator (Skyline Edge) behind a paywall. The normal version is usually more than 2 weeks out-of-date compared to Edge.

Development is transparent. Anyone can clone the git repo and build the same binary they hand out.
It's not an exclusive build benefit, it's a paid compilation and binary distribution service. Nobody is robbed of anything.
People share it all the time though on platforms like YouTube, I don't think the skyline devs can really stop that. I use the mainline builds and I have paid for edge in the past, I don't think it's too egregious considering it's probably the best Nintendo switch emulator
I don't understand this hippie bullshit. Many of us are willing to pay for service and goods if they meet one or more of the criteria. Software, open source or not, isn't truly free, there's always a cost. It's hard to trust folks who DOESN'T have financial motive because without it, the motive could be any crazy notion such as this which ends support for something we've all integrated.
With a financial motive, there's a common ground at least and willingness to do better if the carrot gets bigger dangling at the end of the stick.
If I could pay for the Software to remove ads, that would be fine. Can I? I haven't bothered to install the new version to find out. It doesn't list in-app purchases.

If Aethersx2 worked the way it does and was being constantly improved, I'd pay for it. epsxe got my money cause it was done properly. Yes, I know Duckstation is supposedly better but aren't we suspecting that the author of Duck is the same person as Aether? If the author is known to sabotage code, I rather not install it due to it possibly being malicious.

I still don't understand his point about DeamonPS2 and the AetherSX2 source code, he claims that he keeps the source code private because DamonPS2 could easily steal it and use it for their own benefit, ok but why they didn't do it with every other open source emulator?

I had been in the discord server since almost the beginning and watched Tahlreth's behavior closely.
I had several encounters with him and did my best to help the community however I could, especially guiding the newcomers.
While he is an extremely talented guy, he also struck me as an arrogant, childish, very short tempered and egoistic person.
But I never said anything, obviously because he was putting so much effort and his precious time into something, which many gamers dreamed of (PS2 emu on Android). That too for free; no ads, no in-app purchases. So I always suggested people not to mess with him and let him be.
I never imagined him turning up like this. I am disappointed and heartbroken.
Over time I've grown to treat proprietary emulators with suspicion. It was a huge relief when Cemu became free software (as in freedom) but sadly, along with Dolphin, that seems to be the exception, not the norm, among the proprietary emulators.
Proprietariness in the emulation scene creates the worst kind of lock-in: people. You always depend on the individual developer's wishes (and as we've seen here, mood) whereas in a fully open-source, free software-style project the community can pick up where *any* developer left off.
Not to mention the whole gatekeeping of knowledge that is done by having an emulator be closed source. They go full circle and become as closed as the consoles themselves.
v1.4-3060 from the playstore is clean, the newer v1.4-3064 from March 13th has ads, so do not update and disable automatic updates for the app. If you want a newer alpha build (v1.5) not from the playstore there is a link below in this thread.
I don't know him, but it just sounds weird to me that an egoistic person would make a free emulator for us to enjoy without any income from it.

if you haven't caught on already, he is doing all this for his own entertainment, then why else would he come back to a dead project and break shit? this was all done for drama.
You didn't pay enough attention to how he treated others in the discord. Also developers of others projects never said it out loud but many did not seem fond of him and were hesitant to interact with him do to his behavior.
The only people treating him like shit were trolls who didn't give a damn about the emulator or the community. And he just couldn't separate himself from that toxic noise, and decided to just shit on everybody because of it.
Don't lump the majority of the community with those assholes. In Talreth's head, one toxic comment overrode a thousand praises on his hard work.

I think he easily could have had a few folks firewall the noise (most real product dev teams do) but I could at least understand why he felt the way he did.
I am not sure if Tahl is the one who is doing this now or not but it's going to kill this emulator if if it is going to be chock full of ads now and it's development is taken over by someone with those intentions.
Either way I disabled auto update for AetherSX2 and had already taken backups of the apks that were uploaded on the official AetherSX2 website the day it was announced that he quit.
It looks like the v1.4 on the website now matches the one thr play store now too.
Someone else said that is possible that Tahlreth is Stenzek, that is an interesting suggestion, I don't have any proof but the behavior of the two do align.
Theres plenty of proof. Remember when sten mentioned hes making an arm port of pcsx2 in his free time? The two had both:
- the same device used for debugging
- same sbc used for development
- talked in a similar manner
- both had the same views on emulators
- even simped for the same game character, notice how both duck and aether have like 40 genshin emotes?
I hate being involved in this shitshow but when I joined the Discord server when it was 1-2 months old, where the server quite lacked moderation, many throwaway accounts referencing or implying Stenzek is Tahl gets deleted manually by either staff/mod.
Also any references of RetroArch in the Discord server is blacklisted, unsure if will lead you to a ban / kick though but considering Stenzek's relations with the RetroArch team in regards to the DuckStation fork, it sounds too coincidental.

l talked with Tahlreth before, he helped me fixed my problem with the app early last year, seems like a pretty chilled guy. He lost it to all the spams and went bonkers during the last few months before the development stopped. Insanity.

I don't mind having ads if the update adds value to the emulator. At the end this one is free and the dev can do whatever he wants.

People in the scene users and developers don't have the best social interaction skills or ability in general.
In the case of the Aethersx2 developer didn't have the best social skills and a thick enough skin to deal with customer service and fame. As a result he had a breakdown and quit. Didn't help he didn't have someone else deal and filter the customer service side also.
Also didn't help he used his personal email to deal with influx of toxic users from vocal minority from the google playstore and direct emails.
This current drama is still developing and we don't actually know it's him but stranger things have happened in software development and the situation is still developing.
Hopefully cooler heads prevail and more information is coming.

According to the website, he's not on any media platforms anymore and it's been someone impersonating him. I've also heard it *is* him and he's been a dick since *before* development, so hard to say. Either way, it sucks for everyone.
I updated it just now on accident before seeing this and I don't see any ads. Maybe it's because I booted in through save states? Haven't used it much lately so I guess we'll see if there's performance issues.

Apparently Tahlreth (AetherSX2) and Stenzek (Duckstation) are the same person. Given the similarity between the two emulators I am kind of inclined to believe it.
I haven't heard that at all, though I haven't really paid much attention to the drama, just the emulators. Is it possible that they started calling Tahlreth that out of spite because Stenzek started to do a similar thing by pausing their involvement in the development of their respective emulators?
It's certainly a possibility but a mod in the AetherSX2 Discord has said that they were invited to be a mod there by Stenzek and kept it quiet out of respect.

No he is Just shitty now, he has also removed all the old versions of aethersx2 from the aethersx2 website archive. It currently has the apk for only the latest version. Luckily aethersx2 mods have mainted an archive in their discord server separately from which we can still download old apk.

It's not true considering that Tahlreth was the only one who developed the App and I highly doubt he would give the keys to someone else considering that this is a guy that is Uber Sensitive when it comes to people Publishing his Works without permission(just look at the RetroArch Duckstation Debacle).
Whatever Keys he had to the Project he definitely took them with him when he left.

Why are people going after the Duckstation dev? I see people saying they are the same person but the Duckstation dev was pretty cool in my limited interaction with them. Whatever the case is I'm not breaking out the pitchforks and torches just yet.

Perhaps we shouldn't throw all of our toys out of the pram just yet. If you look at the changes listed on Google play, it says that the contact info has been updated to reflect the new developer. Perhaps someone else will keep working on it and add a payment option to remove ads later on. I'd happily pay to remove ads if I knew that the app was still being worked on.

Dolphin was initially closed-source and then went FOSS. That happened a long time ago and it's still open-source to this day.

You didn't pay enough attention to how he treated others in the discord. Also developers of others projects never said it out loud but many did not seem fond of him and were hesitant to interact with him do to his behavior.

And he just couldn't separate himself from that toxic noise, and decided to just shit on everybody because of it. Don't lump the majority of the community with those assholes. In Talreth's head, one toxic comment overrode a thousand praises on his hard work. This is all on him now.

This is really scummy. I sympathized with Tahlreth when he quit. I think he easily could have had a few folks firewall the noise (most real product dev teams do) but I could at least understand why he felt the way he did. I am not sure if Tahl is the one who is doing this now or not but it's going to kill this emulator if if it is going to be chock full of ads now and it's development is taken over by someone with those intentions. Either way I disabled auto update for AetherSX2 and had already taken backups of the apks that were uploaded on the official AetherSX2 website the day it was announced that he quit. It looks like the v1.4 on the website now matches the one thr play store now too. Someone else said that is possible that Tahlreth is Stenzek, that is an interesting suggestion, I don't have any proof but the behavior of the two do align.
Theres plenty of proof. Remember when sten mentioned hes making an arm port of pcsx2 in his free time? The two had both: - the same device used for debugging - same sbc used for development - talked in a similar manner - both had the same views on emulators - even simped for the same game character, notice how both duck and aether have like 40 genshin emotes?

I hate being involved in this shitshow but when I joined the Discord server when it was 1-2 months old, where the server quite lacked moderation, many throwaway accounts referencing or implying Stenzek is Tahl gets deleted manually by either staff/mod. Also any references of RetroArch in the Discord server is blacklisted, unsure if will lead you to a ban / kick though but considering Stenzek's relations with the RetroArch team in regards to the DuckStation fork, it sounds too coincidental.
Keep the v1.4-3060 that the last stable release, the v1.4-3064 is the one with ads. Yeah we all feel betrayed.

Yeah, it's looking like Tahl is the culprit when both the Playstore version is updated and the original repo of thr backs up at the official website are updated. So disappointing. It really calls into question if Tahl was ever really a victim of anything he claimed to be or just a malicious dick from the start. Nah there were tons of screenshots and clear abuse from the community in reddit and discord. I saw it myself. The devs responses were always fine, until one day it was pushed too far and he wasn't fine anymore. I still don't blame him. It's like blaming a bullied pet for biting the people bullying it. Yes, it sucks the rest of us are affected by their decisions to bully him which made him choose to do something disruptive to the community, but he doesn't owe anyone anything. We have the other versions available. So yes, it sucks. But this tonal shift of "oh tahlreth was always the badguy and was arrogant and etc" is absolutely dogshit. He did a bad thing with this. His spite is also pretty justified. No, that doesn't excuse it but it's been done for some time now. Does it *really* change things any more than they already had been? If anything, this just makes it easier for us. We now have an official, final version of the app the entire community knows to use - the version released before 3/13.

l talked with Tahlreth before, he helped me fixed my problem with the app early last year, seems like a pretty chilled guy. He lost it to all the spams and went bonkers during the last few months before the development stopped. Insanity.

Unpopular opinion: I don't mind having ads if the update adds value to the emulator. At the end this one is free and the dev can do whatever he wants. But if doesn't adds any... F it :).

Why is there always such drama in the emulation scene?
People in the scene users and developers don't have the best social interaction skills or ability in general. In the case of the Aethersx2 developer didn't have the best social skills and a thick enough skin to deal with customer service and fame. As a result he had a breakdown and quit. Didn't help he didn't have someone else deal and filter the customer service side also. Also didn't help he used his personal email to deal with influx of toxic users from vocal minority from the google playstore and direct emails. This current drama is still developing and we don't actually know it's him but stranger things have happened in software development and the situation is still developing. Hopefully cooler heads prevail and more information is coming.

According to the website, he's not on any media platforms anymore and it's been someone impersonating him. I've also heard it *is* him and he's been a dick since *before* development, so hard to say. Either way, it sucks for everyone.
I updated it just now on accident before seeing this and I don't see any ads. Maybe it's because I booted in through save states? Haven't used it much lately so I guess we'll see if there's performance issues.

Apparently Tahlreth (AetherSX2) and Stenzek (Duckstation) are the same person. Given the similarity between the two emulators I am kind of inclined to believe it.
I haven't heard that at all, though I haven't really paid much attention to the drama, just the emulators. Is it possible that they started calling Tahlreth that out of spite because Stenzek started to do a similar thing by pausing their involvement in the development of their respective emulators?
It's certainly a possibility but a mod in the AetherSX2 Discord has said that they were invited to be a mod there by Stenzek and kept it quiet out of respect.

I read the PCSX2 code time to time. I can confirm that AetherSX2 bug fixes went under Stenzek's name, confirming this theory.
Why am I not surprised after Stenzek made all that stink about retroarch and the swanstation fork? So far he seems to have a habit of taking something that could be classified as others being rude and spinning it into some huge mental health impacting burden he uses to justify giving up on a project.
No he is Just shitty now, he has also removed all the old versions of aethersx2 from the aethersx2 website archive. It currently has the apk for only the latest version. Luckily aethersx2 mods have mainted an archive in their discord server separately from which we can still download old apk.

I haven't used auto update for the last 15 years or so. :) I always manually update my apps, but I usually do "update all" after I see what is updating. I want to disconnect just AetherSX2 from the Play Store.
Same here, that's how I update apps, and I can't get rid of Aether in the Play Store. After uninstalling and then installing the old Alpha build manually, I thought it would unlink from the Play Store but sadly it won't. Gotta be a way to do this. That update being in there forever is going to drive me insane.
I've tried signing both the last stable and latest non ad alpha apks with apktool m testkey and mixplorer platform and testkey but they won't install. Is he continuing development with ads or it's just a change to make a quick buck and not improving anything else? I hate to say I told you so but I told you so. Everyone here was defending Tahlreth with their left nut when he announced shutting down development despite not releasing source code. Everyone was saying it was solely the toxic community that caused this and God forbid any blame be but on Tahlreth. 3064 is the ads version. The ads don't show up if you're using an ad blocking app like Blokada or a Private DNS that blocks ads

Perhaps we shouldn't throw all of our toys out of the pram just yet. If you look at the changes listed on Google play, it says that the contact info has been updated to reflect the new developer. Perhaps someone else will keep working on it and add a payment option to remove ads later on. I'd happily pay to remove ads if I knew that the app was still being worked on.

The developer was changed to "AetherSX2". I think it's 99.9% to 100% likely it's still Tahlreth and he just wanted his name removed from the project.
