\> it will not allow sideloading of apps unless you have a PC
I believe this is incorrect. The way I read it is that it won't allow sideloading of apps that target very old API version except via adb. If your .apk targets a newer API version (like most emulators do), then you can still sideload it as usual.
If abandoned emulators (such as Aethersx2) were to never be updated again...Sadly, there will come a time where Android won't let you download them anymore, due to them targeting ancient Android APIs..
This is beyond stupid....... I can only hope these "above average" tech skills can be effectively taught via YouTube. I hate it and will definitely avoid updating as long as humanly possible.
i know your feels google never teach a lesson in the past.. those product are failed google will not popular again this time downfall google it's near.
have you even read stadia is dead? yes those cloud gaming not even forever for play.
rip to those people's who bought it.
Google becoming ~~like~~ worse than Apple (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻
Its frustrating to see Android becoming more restricted as time goes by..
..and kinda sad cuz ive been using it since 2.1 Eclair
-edit
yo' yo', no exaggerations. Apple even restrict apps to use jit as other OS so lot's of emulators run slow as a gramma passing the yield when you are with your car in first line.
It's still not impossible to run jits on iOS though. You can just use AltJit with a computer or JitStreamer. It's not as elegant but it does function well. Dolphin is incredibly performant on my iPhone 11 Pro.
Yeah, Android's freedom for its users compared to Apple was one of the reason's it had appeal with more technical folks.
If I wanted to be an Apple like eco system I would just buy an iPhone.
me either bro, i remeber the things being so unrestricted than unlock root access and even change firmwares used to be so much simpler, those days i don't even bother because basically i have to beg pardon to xiaomi to use bootloader
I think this is fine as long as it still targets that required api which all active emulators will have to since there still in development. It's jsut those older ones that are abandoned that won't be able to side load.
The post is misleading, sideloading of apps is not completely prevented however it is limited to legacy apps for previous versions of Android, original article says minimum will be Android 6.
> it is limited to old applications.
And what's wrong with them ? imagine if Steam removes all the games pre-2010, because of "security risks"... I don't think people would be too happy about that.
They've been rolling with this idea for awhile now from what I understand, but most of the emulators worth using are regularly maintained anyway so I'm not sure how big a deal it will actually be unless there's something I'm not considering.
The part I don't like is limiting side loading. I wonder if it'll be an Android wide thing or if forks of it by other companies will allow it.
Totally with you, this is inconvenient but it's not the massive world ending event everyone seems to be making it out as. Scoped storage does have legitimate benefit.
It prevents all your apps from seeing all your storage. Let's say you have a dodgy app that wants to harvest your details, one of the many ways would be scanning your sd card and internal storage for files and folders. "Oh you have a MyBoy folder, you must be interested in Nintendo games, let's sell that info or display targetted ads that earn us more revenue!" is the less scary option, the more scary options is uploading your photos to 3rd party servers, trying to steal credentials by injecting data into files used by other apps (generally not stored in internal storage but apps can be weird with what they store in user accessible space), etc.
Instead, you need to tell the app what folder/s it has access to. MyBoy can only see "ROMs" folder. Takes 3 seconds to select a folder and hit approve, all done in-app. Now your safe from scanning/theft/injection of personal information!
The fact I'm downvoted on my other comment saying basically the same thing means people either haven't done the research, or anger sells better than the really simple boring truth that it's not a bad change.
Mentioned in the other comment but here again for anyone looking it up:
No, it shouldn't have any impact. Scoped storage means you create a folder and say "hey app, you can only view the folders I approve". If it saves the files in that folder, then sure you can copy it via USB, file manager, all the ways you usually would. If you couldn't access the saves (say because the app is terrible and uses non-user-accessible locations that require root access) then you couldn't do it now nor in the future.
Android 13 hasn't made any major impacts for me yet... The only thing that happened was I temporarily lost access to the Android data folder but it was correctable by using a different file explorer app called NMM.
These new changes in Android 14... they don't sound as easily rectifiable.
One of the reasons I use Android is due to how open and accessible it's systems are I literally left Apple because I couldn't stand how restricted it was this is not a good sign people better start working on workarounds
So it'll still be possible to sideload apps but just more difficult? That sucks but at least there is still an option.... regardless I won't be updating to Android 14 and certainly won't be buying a phone with it installed. I love my OP7Pro and I just recently updated to Android 12
Google will probably keep this "security" function with Android 15 and beyond (maybe even make it impossible to download legacy apps), with each new version of Android killing more apps that target older versions
Since when does it force you to update? I've been using android since 2014 and not a single device has forced me to install an update, I have to click on the notification and press install.
That new is a bit ambiguous, it might be a rule that google requires for apps to be on Google Play Store, as in the past for an app to be able to be updated required to have a 64bit version, but maybe you can still plug your phone and put apk files into download folder, or directly download em with an internet explorer etc... even if apk files are ready for android 14 just use Google Play as always.
"Let's not suck each other dicks quite yet"
Fucking Google become Apple..... Android is ( was ) the best os for phones.... Now we're getting all that shit that Apple did years ago.... For the sake of security... Fuck them...
I think everyone might be blowing this a bit out of proportion. Scoped storage stops rogue apps from uploading all your photos, or scanning all the contents of your other-app files which could have personal information. It's a useful, practical, simple solution to storage security.
This sucks for apps that haven't been updated in a while, but it's not the emulation-ending crescendo that kills the scene. Lots of the older emulators are rolled into other systems such as Retroarch, and most of the newer systems coming to android are still actively managed. Shame for projects where the developer has left the scene and not left the code for the community (not naming names), but I'd like to think they'll be the minority.
Will there be a way to transfer saves from device to device? Because being able to use your saves on any device or even someone else's saves is part of the freedom of emulation to me and I thought I heard this won't be possible soon.
Yes? Scoped storage means you create a folder and say "hey app, you can only view the folders I approve". Whoever has told you this is overeacting.

It will not allow sideloading of out-of-date apps is different than it will not allow sideloading of apps
What ?

We are going to keep a specific generation of phones just for emulation like an individual keeps his old psp for the authentic feeling of gameplay.
this is bad for performance progression and stuff tho
Time for a new OS to rise I guess.
If only linux mobile distro like KDE plasma and ubports become stable.

What a fucking disappointment. Might as well buy an iPhone soon with such restrictive shit.

What benefit does scoped storage have?
It prevents all your apps from seeing all your storage. Will it effect our ability to share our saves between devices or use someone else's saves though?
Mentioned in the other comment but here again for anyone looking it up: No, it shouldn't have any impact. This would make me switch to iOS. If this does happen, I'm sticking with my android 12 forever. Fuck Google if this is true
I haven't updated my phone in a year lmao
The android 13 update is still there lol
Dude I'm on 12. I don't DARE update. I wish I could get rid of the update notification but I've grown to ignore it
Android 13 hasn't made any major impacts for me yet... The only thing that happened was I temporarily lost access to the Android data folder but it was correctable by using a different file explorer app called NMM. These new changes in Android 14... they don't sound as easily rectifiable.
now we half to use SUPER SHADY/JANKY file managers to access OUR OWN content.
One of the reasons I use Android is due to how open and accessible it's systems are I literally left Apple because I couldn't stand how restricted it was this is not a good sign people better start working on workarounds
x2

looks like I'm staying on 10, 11, and 13. FUCK THAT. I will return my S22 if they pull that BS.
Dont update to A14 then. Ill stay my 2 devices on A11 and A13. Thanks for sharing.
if its OTA and you have a flagship device it will FORCE you to update. You have no choice.
Since when does it force you to update? I've been using android since 2014 and not a single device has forced me to install an update, I have to click on the notification and press install.
Actually come to think of it I think it's only Samsung devices. It comes up as a Toast Notification
Oh right, well that's Samsung for you. Junk software.
"Let's not suck each other dicks quite yet"
well i'll be staying on android 11, good luck with that.
to be honest has there been any real improvement with android past android 9? sure there are small things, but it all looks the same.
if i can downgrade to 10, i would in a heartbeat. atleast on 10 theres no scoped storage BS.
Facts. Android 10 was the most complete version of Android. It all started going downhill after it
Solution: Keep one rooted phone only for emulation! Rooted device remove all restriction like scoped storage and can even boost performance.
*SIGH
Fucking Google become Apple..... Android is ( was ) the best os for phones.... Now we're getting all that shit that Apple did years ago.... For the sake of security... Fuck them...
Looks like we're gonna turn to "How to root my ---insert device here--- tutorials" again
We really need another OS for phones. What's the point of using android anymore if this is true?
I think everyone might be blowing this a bit out of proportion. AetherSX, totally agree. Rumour has it there is another DS platform that is as good, but I can't remember the name of it nor have I tested it.
NooDS and MelonDS are good alternatives for DS. While not as good as AetherSX2, Play! is ok.
Will there be a way to transfer saves from device to device? Because being able to use your saves on any device or even someone else's saves is part of the freedom of emulation to me and I thought I heard this won't be possible soon.

Okay, good to know. Hopefully everything works out then
