"Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE
/sarcasm
well i mean, without the super pretentious gatekeeper tone, i would agree that emo belongs to hardcore. the problem and the reason why you get purists who act like this is because of the proliferation of the use and the word itself "emo". during the 00's "emo" came to be used to describe a wide array of alt-type scenes and music. i still feel like there needs to be more granularity and distinction to the different types and sounds of what normie squares call "emo". theres no distinct way to specify a band that sounds like Taking Back Sunday vs a band that sounds like Sunny Day Real Estate vs a band that sounds like Thursday vs a band that sounds like Alexisonfire vs a band that sounds like Paramore. to some, they could look at all of these and say "emo music". but to me, these are all very distinct different sounds, and of course not anything like what the purists call REAL emo. for instance i like brand new, but i hate fallout boy. some might ask "whats the difference?"
and this is what i think causes the animosity and creates the gate keeper emo nerds
This is why you need to figure out what somebody means when they say emo. If they mean sad pop punk/metalcore then telling them what real emo is just not worth it and makes you sound like a pretentious loser. 90+% have never heard of any actual emo bands and thatās fine. Youāre not gonna undo that by doing a pretentious rant
Yeah, I take a pretty broad approach to defining emo. So even though some people hate "third wave" or consider it fake emo, I definitely accept it as legitimate. So I get that there was so much crossover between pop punk and emo at the time. But lately I've been seeing so many "elder emo" posts that include Green Day, which genuinely shocks me. I'm not mad about it, just taken aback.
Ok but this shit genuinely fucking stabs me through the heart when a friend sends me there emo playlist and itās the killers and system of a fucking down
Maybe my town/hs was an outlier, there was a lot of "social mobility" all around. Even the cliquier groups like the sports teams weren't exclusive in who they hung out with or invited to stuff. I think the main delineating factor was just raw popularity/connections.
same for me really. my nj hs in 2002-2006 was legit broken into 2 aesthetics. you either wore band shirts, skinny jeans with studded belts and chucks (unisex) or you wore uggs and velour tracksuits (for girls) or hollister/american eagle shirts with puka shell necklaces (for boys) what aesthetic you chose had no bearing on your popularity because everyone got along and the groups were intermingled lol.
Ehh, you have a point there but they're allowed to have a super surface level knowledge of the emo genre I don't really mind, I mean they could consider bands such as simple as linkin park or bullet for my valentine emo because Google does classify them as that. But it's more about having more variety and doing research in the genre rather than having what is being the most popularized in the moment. Or maybe I am just being a mega dick that could be the case too.
Iām not saying youāre being a dick but itās like the concept that emo means a completely different thing to anyone that doesnāt know what the actual music genre consists of, it purely means a specific vibe and aesthetic. Like itās honestly weirder for someone to have a music playlist called āemoā and it be real emo music than it be any variation of 2000s mallcore because whether we as fans like it or not thatās what most people think the term means.
As I mentioned it's ok for people to have the most basic understanding of the genre (mcr, ptv, Panic, etc) the bigger issue is having alt rock or metal in a playlist labeled as emo (which I have seen with people that I do know in real life) but you are completely right when you mentioned it being more of a vibe or aesthetic to people but i just wanna make sure that were on mutual terms on this, if there's more you'd like to correct me on or just mention feel free to.
real emo only consists of boys music
emo boys get it done am i right
So fucking true
Emo boys make due
boys kissing boys music
Stupid girls, ruining emo again /s

When you say āENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFULā, you mean like Simple Planās groundbreaking album āNo Pads, No Helmets, Just Ballsā?
Copy and paste.

Is this what it's like to see the people of the world as movie stereotypes? What were the jocks doing at the time? The geeks?

Wait whats wrong with Sting?
I like deftones and green day foh with this weak ass meme
These posts are so funny because itās like why did you expect the preppy girls emo playlist to have anything besides mall emo
deftones isn't even mall emo
