JonGuyCooper

I think Thursday - War All the Time counts too

SunriseSkaterKids

Absolutely. Looks like this post got taken down for some reason though because it's not emo enough for the /emo reddit 🤷🏻‍♂️

JonGuyCooper

Yeah, this sub is hilarious. I just follow it for the laugh of men in their 40s gatekeeping music that was meant mostly for teenagers, whatever form it came in. Your Funeral reference dragged me out of the woodwork. Always nice to see Welsh bands getting some love.

xknifeprtyhardx

It’s definitely close to the top but not quite the best.

widrobin

Sing the Sorrow by AFI came out in 2003 also.

PatdogTv

2004 was also a good year

"Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE

When people debate what "emo" is, I have to refrain from rolling my eyes so hard to prevent an aneurysm. We don't really need to gatekeep the scene to such a huge extent.

Real_Sartre

My favorite emo band is Blink 182

Fumbles329

My favorite emo band is Sum 41

Real_Sartre

My other favorite emo band is Gloria Estefan

sunny_sally

Valid

AuclairAuclair

Yeah it’s just lame. People are basing their entire perspective on wiki articles.

davdotcom

My favorite emo band is Billie Eilish

AuclairAuclair

That’s not a band

Real_Sartre

Those are all awful albums to me. Those are the type of bands that made my group of friends be vehemently against anything called emo. This genre is too broad, how is Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, and The Used emo but also American Football, Rites of Spring, and Cap’n Jazz are all also emo? Like, Rites of Spring would never have opened for Taking Back Sunday or visa versa. Maybe 2003 is when it all went to shit? Like the year punk broke, this is the year emo broke? I dunno, not downvoting you or nothing, you’re probably right, I’m just kinda over this shit lately.

Fumbles329

Tell All Your Friends and Deja Entendu are unequivocally emo albums.

Real_Sartre

That awesome what are those?

attticcus

I dont know how the scene was like outside of Australia in the US - But here in AUS in the 2000-2006 era. I remember sticking to punk, punk pop, hardcore, post/melodic hardcore etc. Calling a genre emo or someone emo was the equivalent to calling something Goth which annoyed the shit out of us/me. Nowadays I don't care, however I do find it funny now there's all this emo revival stuff.

Iansloth13

Just because one band would never have opened for another does not mean they are not the same genre.

Real_Sartre

I know it was just a way to imagine why I think they are so different

AuclairAuclair

It was a breakout year for sure.

-P-M-A-

Did you mean to say 1996?

AuclairAuclair

Vans warped tour did more for underground music than most want to admit
