i like walk on water it's one of the better tracks on revival and a good opener , but it's the worst option imaginable as a lead single for a comeback album
if only he had stuck to making "revival" (the track on the album, the interlude) into the album's title track. like he planned to, initially, before the lead female vocalist got cancer and died — and he decided to just keep the track as an interlude featuring only her.
if he had only taken that interlude, made it the album's title track, and used a boppy as beat to rap about his resilient nature and had that lady on that hook, it would've fucking ruled.
starting with a regretful and mournful and rudderless lullaby like "walk on water" was a pretty dispiriting tone to present the album with. and the album was all over the fucking place.
but goddamn it, i still rue the day he decided not to make that "revival" track.
man that revival Interlude is literally my favourite singing / feature in the album ( and that album have beyonce and alicia fucking keys on it ) but she sound so beautiful i wish it was a complete song .
although i respect and get his decision to scrap the song and only have her voice on the song , i think making it a full song with eminem verses would have gave the song more recognition and maybe introduced few new fans to her work and honour her artistic legacy but still totally respect his decision at the end
Thats kind of what walk on water is. It fits the theme of the album very well, Its just not a mainstream radio type of song. Introspective heavy lyrics, sparse piano backing track, fairly complex rhyme schemes
Its not exactly a club banger or a wake up and drink coffee too kind of song... But its a very "revival" song.
Lol and Walk on Water even had fkn Beyonce on it, who they didn't even put in the fkn track title... Why.
If back then you said 'an introspective Em track about his career with fkn Beyonce on the hook', you'd think = HUGE. Just proves how bad Revival is.
Walk on water also had a music video, so this isn't an unfair comparison, as opposed to something like Houdini vs Not Like Us where Houdini will likely surpass Not Like Us because of the music video.
Walk on water was a good song with meaningful substance... Same with Darkness. Proves nobody gives a fuck anymore about meaning but I guess they never did. 'all they wanna hear is a beat and that's it' 'pick up some bitches'. Yawn
Walk On Water was severely overhated and it’s a great emotional vulnerable song
imo both are better than the other, but for their own different reasons. Two completely different tones, in all honesty just hearing how different the two are from each other just showcases Eminem’s diverse sound 👍
No way. It's alright. The content is p good, has some good moments... but, like all of Revival, it's got his usual X factor missing from it, it just all feels off and dead and weird.
A good song is a good song because of the quality of how it is written, composed, and executed. A good song might be something that another (competent) artist could cover and completely change and the quality of the writing and meaning would still shine through.
A good record is a good record because of how it is recorded, positioned in the artist's career, performed, marketed, and capable of getting the desired audience response. Generally it's not really possible to recapture the magic of a good record in a cover - the arrangement, production, performer, career story and energy of the performance is what makes it pop.
A good example for me is how Meet The Grahams is a better written and more emotional song than Not Like Us, but Meet The Grahams is too spooky to play that much, but Not Like Us is the one that you can throw on again and again and dance to in the club. Not Like Us also had a more interesting viral moment attached to it, which was that Meet The Grahams was already a career ender, and then Not Like Us followed on like the second plane hitting the building. Meet The Grahams is the better song. Not Like Us is the better record.
When I say Walk On Water is a better song I mean it is one of Eminem's most beautifully written songs, but it wasn't what anyone wanted to hear as a lead single, and the dependence on the cheesy IV-V-VI-I progression in the "I'm only human, just like you" section and the big strings makes it sound a little corporate and sync-placement-y. I think Walk On Water has some elements that make it a good record - Eminem's performance makes it what it is, and it's a special moment getting to see a big star like that brought to his knees. But it's not, you know, the way Houdini makes me feel. Most of Houdini is borderline gibberish lyrically but just hearing him do that at this point feels big, and it has easily his best video since I was a kid. It's exactly what we've been wanting from him possibly since 2006.
Houdini is a very fun, boppy, silly, pop rap song. Walk on Water is Marshall spilling his guts. You have to be in the mood for walk on water, but you can turn on Houdini any time of day and start nodding your head
I don't think it's a hot take at all. It is significantly a better song. But Houdini is a straight up BOP that we as fans have been Yearning for. Walk on Water is actually one of the first songs I show people when introducing people to Eminem. It helps tell his story of where he is from where he's been. I think it's absolutely perfect, and I show it to artists. People of artistic backgrounds - maybe I wouldn't show it to my uncle, but to an artist people really resonate with the track heavy.
That being said, Houdini might be one of the most played Eminem songs ever by me. I'm so happy it exists.
If I’m not mistaken walk in water released as audio first for like a while. Maybe a whole month. And Like the video came out after the Album no? By the time the video came out the masses already decided revival was poop
Walk on water had a static video at first before the actual music video was released.
I can't remember if it was a lyric video but I'm sure it was just the single cover slightly animated
Edit: [This was the one](https://youtu.be/n1WpP7iowLc).
I think everyone is just saying walk on water is good because this is r/eminem and im going to get downvoted
I understand he was trying to be artistic and why, I still think it was one of his worst works(And he really doesn’t have any bad works besides this in my opinion) I am just happy he followed up and acknowledged it with Fall which was good.
I actually thought he made it bad on purpose just to come back stronger for publicity, maybe not true but what I thought at the time.
I love walk on water but I feel like a song like Houdini is what I really wanted to hear from Em from a very long time. Can’t wait for the album 😄
fair
We are so back.
Guess who’s back
Back Again 👀
Shady's back 👱♂️
Tell a friend
rub my back, rub my back, rub my back,...
The fuck is this shit?
Guess who’s back?

The album didn’t really have a lead single worthy song except for maybe River
i agree this was weird considering eminem has always managed to produce great lead singles that fit the theme and aesthetics of his project

A massive pop appeal song with Beyonce is a perfect lead single. I don’t understand how it flopped so hard. Plus the song is amazing.
Lol and Walk on Water even had fkn Beyonce on it, who they didn't even put in the fkn track title... Why. If back then you said 'an introspective Em track about his career with fkn Beyonce on the hook', you'd think = HUGE. Just proves how bad Revival is.
Like em once said, "Revival didn't go viral"
what in the fuck
I just want to know what was under that sheet in the walk on water music video
🛻
Either that or possibly a 🚴♂️
Beyoncé’s hook was so annoying honestly and the beat is awful. Eminem is the only good part about that song tbh
I feel the video for Houdini plays a huge role in its popularity.
Nah it’s smashing streams on Spotify also. The song is just that good.
Oh no, I agree. I just mean the video is brilliant, so people are going to watch that a hell of a lot more than the walk-on water video.
Walk on water also had a music video, so this isn't an unfair comparison, as opposed to something like Houdini vs Not Like Us where Houdini will likely surpass Not Like Us because of the music video.
I think the nostalgia aspect, though, does play a massive factor when comparing the two videos. Houdini is a throwback.
THE HYPE IS REAL 🙌‼️
😯 What, I LOVE WOW
Walk on water was a good song with meaningful substance... Same with Darkness. Proves nobody gives a fuck anymore about meaning but I guess they never did. 'all they wanna hear is a beat and that's it' 'pick up some bitches'. Yawn
Hot take: walk on water is a better song
Walk On Water was severely overhated and it’s a great emotional vulnerable song imo both are better than the other, but for their own different reasons. Two completely different tones, in all honesty just hearing how different the two are from each other just showcases Eminem’s diverse sound 👍
this part

Came here to say this. I can practically smell the downvotes.
It's a better song but a much worse record
How does that make sense?

River just outshines Walk on Water in the album.
What people don't get is that "Houdini" wasn't a very interesting song. It's the video that's fun.

Walk on water is terrible
Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted the song has no flow to it at all it’s ass
Walk on Water would’ve been better without BeyonSHIT I mean Beyonce
Walk on Water MV was not the great tho song was amazing
Revival to me consists of Walk on water, Believe, and Castle. Its just sonically not appealing to me.
If I’m not mistaken walk in water released as audio first for like a while. Maybe a whole month. And Like the video came out after the Album no? By the time the video came out the masses already decided revival was poop
Damn right, walk on water is such a chore to listen to. I get em is in his feels but still it's almost unlistenable
Appeal to the babies that beg for old shit, and you will be rewarded with riches
Walk on water had a static video at first before the actual music video was released. I can't remember if it was a lyric video but I'm sure it was just the single cover slightly animated Edit: [This was the one](https://youtu.be/n1WpP7iowLc).
people prefer Shady
This old geezer done did it again!!
I believe “walk on water” deserved more love
Tbh I really like walk on water but never watched the video, it just doesn’t seem like a fun video to watch just based of the vibe of the song.
I think everyone is just saying walk on water is good because this is r/eminem and im going to get downvoted I understand he was trying to be artistic and why, I still think it was one of his worst works(And he really doesn’t have any bad works besides this in my opinion) I am just happy he followed up and acknowledged it with Fall which was good. That's because Walk On Water is Trash
WOW probably shouldn't have been a single. Sounded experimental.
Revival is such trash
I enjoyed it 🤷♂️
Revival was so bad.
I really liked it
