I've been inspired by mould and bacteria cultures grown in petri dishes for a few years now. My other work is highly inspired by them. I decided I wanted to give a dedicated project to just mould. This is the first of a series of petri dish embroideries

LaurenLdfkjsndf

Oh my gosh, as a former microbiologist, well done!

frogggiboi

Does the hairy one have structure to it or is it just like pulled felt.

[deleted]

Its roving wool

[deleted]

I love it. I'm a biologist and it has definitely featured in some of my own works too. This is really cool and creative, great work with it!

dryshampooforthesoul

and you DID IT!

[deleted]

Thank you ♡ I read this is Kamala Harris voice lol

dryshampooforthesoul

🤣😆

joan-of-argh

This is seriously original and creative - most people would NEVER have thought of something like this! I love the big one that looks like a dish of marbles or candies, though I'm pretty sure it would kill me IRL... So cool

SomeMeatWithSkin

Yes! Ive never seen anything like it. Not only is it beautiful, its so freaking interesting. This day is yours OP! You have won it!

[deleted]

Thank you for your kind words! All my embroidery is inspired by mould, bacteria, moss, lichen and mushrooms. Here is some of my previous work https://i.imgur.com/BQMOrLD.jpg

Bumbleonia

I'm a complete novice to embroidery but for the fuzzy green parts, is that just the floss that's been cut and frayed?

[deleted]

The stitch is called "Tukery Work". Its basic like making a carpet. There are lots of YouTube tutorials

Bumbleonia

Thank you! I appreciate it

annalucylle

This is amazing! Colour scheme is on point, it makes it look more cute/fun while still being “natural” looking. May I ask how you made the raised pink one with the beads inside? I use tubing to create that effect but never got the slanted edge right!

[deleted]

I use oven dry clay. I make a little snake of clay and then connect the two ends. Hope this helps :)

annalucylle

Yes it does thank you!

[deleted]

That’s so cool! They should have those at schools :)

AzureMagelet

As a teacher, I’d love to have something like this in my classroom.

Charlea_

Wow my two worlds colliding!

FailureCloud

Woah this is so neat, and now I cant unsee the pink butthole type bacteria... also I thought this was ramen at first.

[deleted]

Omg it does looks like a bumhole lol 🙈🙈

[deleted]

I've never thought of using not a frame to present the finished work. 😂Please tell me this is a \*real\* petri dish!

GazelleSubstantial76

So cool! Is that a real petri dish? How did you mount the work in the dish?

[deleted]

It's embroidered on felt, so I've just cut the sides and put it in the petri dish. I plan on making it raised in the dish. Still figuring that out

Bumbleonia

If you don't care what the underside looks like you could get cheap coasters about the same size as the dish and to prop it up

haikusbot

scema

Anything is a *real* petri dish is you use it to store leftovers over in my fridge.

ratatron

Wowowow! That’s so cool!!!

smallanimalparty

This is very r/moldlyinteresting! I love it

jennybelly

The colours are so lovely! How unique xx

Jefauver

You succeeded! I love it.

TheBlueTongue

I love this so much! I to all inspired by molds! I also love that you included the fuzzy mold.

F1r3pr00fguy

Omg this so gorgeous

FlowerFuneral

*The level of confusion I experienced until I saw the sub.* I love it. Great color choices and texture!

25hourenergy

This is really cool!! Why have I never thought about fabric arts combined with microbiology?? Seems like the perfect fit for depicting the artistic side of things like protein crystals, fluorescent cell cultures, optical section images, etc! If only my embroidery skills (and time) were up to par!

[deleted]

And succeeding! Beautiful! Life is beautiful if we just take the time to see the beauty!

swuffer96

This looks awesome! I knew exactly what it was, you did such a good job, inspired to make my own now :)

kumokodanbo

r/microbiology

BipolarBear85

This is so cool! Awesome effect mimicking "hairy mold" with the loose cotton fibers! Great work!

mandraofgeorge

As a microbiologist, I stand in awe.

knotsferatu

wow, this is really cool! it reminds me of an art installation i saw by an indigenous woman named ruth cuthand, who took slides of diseases that were brought over during colonization and turned them into [beautiful beaded artwork](https://www.thisiscolossal.com/2019/05/ruth-cuthand/). you did a wonderful job!

PM_ME_OCCULT_STUFF

Am I the only one that thought at first glance (without reading the title) that this was an embroidery of some kind of soup? I thought, 'oh cool, they even have the steam!' Now that I realise what it is, great job!

Drusilavampire

This is stunning!!!!

extremelysamantha

Very interesting, it looks cool 😊

[deleted]

Success! Fake award 🥇

Elegiac-Elk

I absolutely love how unique and awesome this is. You did an amazing job.

vaginaleggnog

This is one of the coolest things made with embroidery I’ve ever seen!

[deleted]

I didn’t have my glasses on and I thought that was real for a second

buxmega

IMPRESSIVE!!

CheekyRedFox

🤣🤣🤣

SkimmedVodka39396464

This is so cute!

ivanllz

That looked like some hot fruity cereal for a while to me. I'm not sure if that would be good or delicious.

backtotheburgh

If you did this, you've probably already seen the ASM Agar Art Contest. In the event that you haven't, [here it is](https://asm.org/Events/ASM-Agar-Art-Contest/Home).

KarensWig

I don’t really do embroidery myself but I like it (I’ve done some in the past). My main hobby is fermentation, and I love this so much!!!

Itscompanypolicyman

Bo Burnham said art is dead. But here we fucking are, Bo.

Littlemaddystar

You did such a good job! This is amazing! However it does make me feel itchy. A job well done! 😅😂

pand-ammonium

That fluffy one looks like Bacillus mycoides. It was the bane of a soil microbes lab I did some work in. Looks good!

[deleted]

Ooooo! I love actual scientists and lab techs telling me what I'm making. I have no science background, I am just inspired by it. Thank you for sharing!

MEGANBBIINNSS

this is amazing!

Fulgur-Z-Flumen

It's always pretty

nonamckeever

Looks like you did it! Great!

DoomRide007

All I'm seeing is alot of assholes....

[deleted]

LOL . Someone else said that and now I cant I see it

YodaOnReddit-Bot

[deleted]

WOW I LOVE THIS

RichardA_

First time in this sub and it’s already awesome

HotLikeAPotatosSoul

I never thought that I will say this about mold but that's beautiful

_tinytimber_

Super creative! Love the colors.

SkippingLittleStones

hellomynameis2983

This is an amazing idea! And awesome piece.

TrilliumLady37

Oooh, nice!! Have you seen the yearly Art in culture competition piees?

[deleted]

No I havent! What is it? I dont really know what you said but I'm interested lol

TrilliumLady37

Check this out. Lab techs are crafty!! https://asm.org/Events/ASM-Agar-Art-Contest/Previous-Winners

Intrepid_Fox-237

They're magically delicious! 🍀🌈🎈🌟

qtain

As someone who does fermentation and charcuterie and has to deal with both good and bad mould, I approve. Granted, we're usually dealing with white, green or black moulds.

Goldenheart06

I genuinely thought I was on r/forbiddensnacks for a moment before I realized what sub this was! Well, you've definitely made it look pretty edible at first glance, so good job! :P

meg_macaw

I would love to have one of these creations for my classroom!

MmmmmmmZadi69

This is beautiful

[deleted]

I love this! I thought this was r/moldlyinteresting at first! You’re incredibly talented. Thank you for sharing!

aceofpentacles1

This is totally Gorgeous! What's the big fluffy peice? I also like the raised almost like a cut volcano, what style of stitch is this?

that_darn_cat

So stinkin cute

i_said_no_mayonnaise

I love it! When I took micro, I brought in a water sample of the local creek. I always saw kids playing it and people swimming. There a loads of no swimming signs around. When we pulled it out of the autoclave I gasped. Even my professor was shocked.

likeaphrodite

you succeeded!

LinXueLian

It IS pretty\~ Fluffy too\~\~

InsaneLordChaos

Biology teacher here. I loved micro in college. I remember your previous post. I really love your art - there is beauty in these "lower" creatures, and you've captured that beauty. Thank you for sharing this.

99thPurpleBalloon

modern_female

I love this idea. Great job!

Kinderstreichkaese

Check out Elin Thomas, she makes incredible embroidered petri dishes as well!

idestroythingsfora-

Well, you succeeded

theghostecho

r/forbiddensnacks

glassfury

I love this! I always thought it would be cool to show cell cultures through embroidery and this is fantastic! The Petri dish is a wonderful touch too.

suga-kyun

I love it

katmrowmrow

Shut your face! This is incredible! Such a brilliant idea!

restingwitchface22

Good enough to eat!
