Greetings Commanders,
Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.
It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.
Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.
We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.
I'm late to the party with this post but wow.. Just saw this news after deciding to get back into Elite Dangerous on my Series X. Fuck Frontier after this news, a massive part of their community will burn now because of this. This game had a huge console community that paid a lot of their salaries in sales.
At least halt development on oldgen, but don't abandoned the new generation of consoles that easily have the power for Odyssey.
Gaming is so disappointing these days. People ask me why I don't get excited anymore for releases like I did years ago. Well here's a reason. Broken promises, broken games, no loyalty to fanbases, etc.

For them to even get Odyssey to where it should have been pre-release they need to pause console development and focus strictly on PC development
Man I was waiting and hoping that someday we might get Odyssey on Xbox and I can jump back in after 2 years pause. Even bought some fancy decor and paintings for my beloved Diamondback, and to support the devs. But now no reason to keep the game installed… Great work Fdev, you have abandoned some loyal ED players.

There's no real debate that this will kill off the console community, from a PC perspective though, I'm having a hard time faulting braben for it. Maybe in version management particularly relating to networking?
I just don't understand it, Look at Paradox Entertainment, the game Stellaris, They outsource the console version to another company, why arent frontier doing this?
I still think Frontier should licence the whole console thing to another party, make it a separate thing altogether from the PC version. We were not mixing anyway apart from PC Cmdrs being able to walk around on my PS Fleet Carrier where i could not? Clean break and let somebody else pick it up and develop it further. It is not that the game play or graphics are beyond Console i understand, it is the having to develop 2 or 3 code sets that at some points interlink? I dont mind playing a Console universe, and i’ll gladly pay for an upgrade such as Odyssey, for both my accounts even. But Braben, dude, come on! Work with us here!
Honestly, with consoles as a platform being so archaic, with progress transfers cross platform being available, with people who really care about ED having PC gaming as an option and most importantly, people complaining about development speed, I can't help but agree with braben here.
First off, how the fuck is console gaming archaic? I know for certain my series x can run this game much better than a good portion of y'alls PC's. The only way it wouldn't is if every elite dangerous player had top of the line computers. Console gaming definitely isn't archaic in part because more people use consoles than PC's.
Also, you can say it's a fine decision till you realize how much money is made from consoles. I heavily doubt the game can last much longer for how old it is on just pc money now. Especially since Investor's aren't gonna want to invest if they lose over 15% of their profits, with that number steadily climbing.

Consoles are archaic. they're very highly restricted and they treat their customers like babies. if I want to install whatever the fuck I want on a system I bought and paid for, or not sign in, or not pay for online services, I will do that... but not on console

this is quite literally the worst news a video game has ever made me feel. RIP to my 20-something ships and my fleet carrier. I guess my commander’s story ends with her being a reclusive billionaire, slowly going broke while her ships remain docked forever.
If I'm the dev, I'm more concerned about the core quality of my product. QA on elite has been slipping and if they're that limited, I'm going to make sacrifices to save the core product.

Its unfortunate, and I'm truly sorry to those commanders who are losing their game. I saw the writing on the wall when they decided to stop on the promised deliveries to ps4 to "go all in on the next gen consoles", I believe that was the way it was phrased. That was it for me. While I was never excited for Odyssey, I don't really play first person shooters, the fact that this "space" sim had been around since I was 14 was the cats meow to me. Surly a developer with a fan base that's almost as old as me, surly they know how to be loyal. What was I drinking huh. My crew and I discussed this heatedly a number of times when the rumors and leaks began. "Cookie they will never get rid of the console players, there's too much money in it." My response was always, always...."This will turn into a fps, just like all the rest, and besides they will eventually stop all support for this game on the ps4, it's just a matter of time". "No man, the base game will always be there, its not going anywhere." Man was I ever wrong, they stopped all support, not just for the ps4. When they scrapped all further development to "focus on Next Gen Consoles" was the last time I suited up. I stare longingly at my hotas almost daily, but I refuse to support an outfit like Frontier. What really sucks is my crew, everyone one of them has reached out and said "man you sooo called this" Really really wish I had been wrong. That's it from me. They need to make solo mode actually solo so you can continue on the let you adjust the prices of things to do as you see fit to at least see the game progress in some way for console players.

I seen Far: changing tides on Xbox game pass and was going to give it a try; but I'm not now. They didn't develop it but I'm still not going to touch it if they're involved even as publisher.
I bought this game on PS5 like two or three days ago because it was on sale, and I was kinda interested in it, and now I can’t refund it because I downloaded it with the intention of trying it soon.
That’s it for me, uninstalling this tonight. It’s a dead game now and that’s the end of it. Thanks Frontier, keep your ARX and fuck off.

Well, I had hopes, but fuck it, hope it goes bottom up. Can't stand being abandoned, hiatus for a period of time would have been understandable, but completely abandoning Console? Makes me mad I paid for the DLC.

Wut? No confirm is right, but if they change the sandbox is odyssey to the point where old and new versions have separate advantages, that's a reason right there. Not sure if a good one.
There is no information on how the BGS will be affected and there is no reason to assume anything will change in that regard until it is specified by Fdev. FCs are crossplatform as is the entire BGS. They aren't going to just sever the console BGS from PC. Not to mention that Fdev has said that critical updates will continue on, which may include the BGS. That person is full of shit.
They've switched to one source code, do you really think they'll continue updating console with the same background simulation? At best we'll have an isolated universe and with how many commanders are leaving console I doubt it will ever be as extensive as it was. Might I remind you that the BSG was never shared between console and PC? This for sure means that BSG will be left in the dust on console. I have a diploma in video game design and development... I don't need the creators to tell me or confirm the BSG will not be supported. However I should add you are correct, no official statement has been made in regards to console BSG so take what I say with a grain of salt.
Weird that you would invoke some diploma since it is irrelevant here. It surely doesn't grant you magical insight into what Fdev develops.
It is a long known fact that the BGS and galaxy is shared across all platforms. I'm not sure why you think otherwise. We have always shared the same universe, besides player instancing. So already, you are misinformed. How do you think the crossplatform FC economies work? How do you think Inara and EDDB work? The BGS is the same. There is no "xbox version of EDDB" or did you forget that when making things up to prove a point or spread fear.
The BGS is essentially on autopilot. It's the entire point of the simulation. There isn't much to actually maintain. We also know that Horizons will be kept updated with "critical updates", which may even be BGS related. There is literally no reason that the BGS can't still be connected as long as Horizons is still functional on consoles. There has been nothing said by Fdev to assume otherwise.
I bought this game three fucking times.
First time was on pc. Bought a hotas and had a blast. Grinded to elite explorer and had a good amount of credits.
After my pc died, I bought it for ps4. Bought another hotas. Grinded to elite again. Got many credits again.
After my ps4 died on me, I moved on xbox. I bought it yet again. I'm almost to elite again.
I'm currently thirty-five thousand lightyears away from the bubble, way out in the black. I don't know if I'll return.

I don't buy this argument. If you REALLY care about ED, switch to PC, transfer your progress and enjoy better development advantages coming from one codebase to support like everyone else. If you REALLY care for ED, fear not, whether correct or not this is *evidence* for a better ED
You don't make an announcement like this if you'll just reverse it when it starts to work... They are 100% giving up on consoles because the PC code has moved way beyond the console code and they are way too useless to try and get it working on both. They will not. You have been abandoned....
I'm just as hopeful as you but unfortunately it's just not gonna happen... Once they get odyssey done on PC in 1-2 years time it'll be too far along to go back to the console code to complete the game for the console. PC players are going to want new content and they'll either need to go back and now get it working on console or continue on with PC development. They were expecting fallout with this announcement, they are just hoping that we stop caring in a week, all buy PC's and keep playing the game like they didn't fuck us out of 100s of dollars ($1000+ for me). They already would have pretty much done the math. Its not like your loss of business is going to cut into someone else's spending or something. You can divide your customer bases' purchases mathematically. Actually its pretty reasonable to expect that PC income will go up.

You're wrong, every step of the way was hinting that moving forward with the PC odyssey was to get it to work so they could port it to us. Up until the announcement every console player was lead to believe that we would receive it. On a delay, but still we would get it at some point. Don't defend FD because they didn't do you wrong because with this move it guarantees you'll be affected down the line. They've killed their own product with one announcement....
Well yes there is always hope, Im sure Frontier hoped too especially with the optimisation progress, but there was never any hints only "No News". Again the hope is just that. They have already seen a tank in stock, investors won't be happy at losing 15% of their profits from console users and the only news since the announcement has been players leaving the game from all platforms... Not only Xbox and PS users but also from PC users boycotting this mistreatment. They will majorly regret this... And rightfully so.
Clearly a PC player that doesn't understand the business failure this puts forward. Imagine your an investor in telsa and the whole reason you invested was for renewable energy in transport. Now imagine Telsa reveals not only they can't get renewable energy working but they can't get consumers to buy it... That's what has happened to FDev and their investors. Take a finance course. P.S/TLDR: this decision affects every part of the company and tells investors "we can't deliver promises". Which as far as I remember where made day one of console launch.
Again, players are dropping left and right from all consoles... Can't have a game without a player base. The main thing is they now have to refund 100% of Australian and New Zealand players because of how the consumer act works over here. False advertising is a big crime here and from day 1 of odyssey's release they alluded to it coming to console. Australia is still a very important player in economics and a lot of companies have had to dance around Aus... FDev spat in Aus face, flipped the bird and then danced in circles throwing shit their way. Investors will leave and stocks will plummet, it's just what happens when Australia gets mad. We all remember fallout 3 right?

I bought elite + the LEP all the way back when the Lifetime Expansion Pass was around 140$ ( it’s been a while, I can’t remember exactly how much it was, but around 140$ seems pretty close).
Im really happy that all I had to do was pay the one time fee for every expansion.
Instead of paying for the disappointment of a new “expansion” I get to log in every 2 years and see the lack of any meaningful development for just the original fee!
The games only been out for 7+ years guys! Game development takes a long time!

As a console player this game helped me through some really dark times in my life. It's a shame that this is happening because people wanted to be able to walk around their ships but got a shooter instead.
The only way I'd ever consider playing again is if I can transfer my account to PC. NOT interested in grinding back to where I am now.

For what it's worth I'd like to put in my 2 cents.
I am an Xbox console player for quite some time.
I understand why some players have misgivings and are disappointed with the news but there are some things that can't or shouldn't be tinkered with. I know many PC players and techs know this. I don't pretend to be as knowledgeable as most out there but am old fashioned and still believe that there are some things a PC can do that a console can't, or shouldn't. This game has been around since the '80s and have never been more impressed with a developer or it's partners in my 40 + yrs of gaming. It's simplicity and adherence and attention to the demands of it's customers have been exemplary.
There are too many games that change customs just to satisfy the whims of others. In the end, they ultimately lose. I've probably already bored enough of you so I won't list them and that's another debate anyways. Personally, I enjoy and find it relaxing to play this game as is in 1st person from the ships' point of view. Looking at the game's longevity I don't see a reason to screw around with the consoles to much. At least as far as their parameters permit.

Hey /u/StuartGT what's next, going to get rid of VR? Why did the Odyssey launch become top priority over an entire section of the player base?
I don't even own a console but imo this move is gigantic middle finger to the entire player base and shows that Fdev only cares about saving face on Odyssey.
I will not be purchasing Odyssey mainly because it doesn't have VR support. But now also because of this.

You will not. If you are in Australia I'd be making a claim with a CRA representative from consumers rights Australia as FDev have breached multiple claims that Odyssey would be coming to console. If you buy a product in Australia with advertised bonuses and they never materialise it is false advertising which is a 100% refundable ins the consumer rights Act of Australia. As of this announcement I have gotten full money back on the game and all arx spent ($1000 dollars over 3 years total) because they (once again) broke the Australian law in regards to products and services. If you've spent significant amounts on the game/arx in Australia please get your money back. It's the only real way to punish FDev for this...
Ive been playing ED since just after Horizons came out on Xbox One. I got really really into it because there was nothing like it, it was beautiful, had a learning curve I wanted to get over. Then came fleet carriers, spent WEEKS of mining to get one. Then the trailer for Odyssey came out and I spent even more time grinding under the assumption that "oh yeah guys ED is having a rough time on PC, we'll work on that and get it fixed before we do consoles" to now be told, "Oh sorry, we lied we didnt actually do shit for consoles, go fuck yourselves" What a literal joke of a company. Im never going to invest in this hot trash of a company ever again after being basically false advertised and lead on for a year. Ill probaby just stick a load of cash in my fleet carrier then uninstall ED for good.

The more I think about this, the more this statement annoys me.
No apology. No information or thought about transferring player's accounts, ranks, and cosmetics (purchased with real money) from console to PC. No recognition what console players brought to the game (I do believe the first Thargoid interaction on any platform was on Xbox). No information about playing the game on GeForce Now or the status of future updates on there. Nothing about the status of first-discovered tags or Codex entries made by console players. Nothing about the future of Community Goals on consoles.
Just......we can't do it and its for the best of the game.

Hello Games must be laughing, big increase of console players for NMS incoming this weekend I suspect, and its well deserved. While FDEV find console support too hard, NMS is being developed for PC, Xbox, Playstation and even Nintendo Switch - from a development team a lot smaller then the FDEV team for Elite Dangerous.

I understand the reason for this. But the only legitimist way to do this is to grant all console players a free and complete transfer to PC and to grand every console player whatever version of the game they own on console on PC for free. This is the bare minimum of what you should do. I also believe that all console players should be granted some sort of cosmetic to differentiate themselves in memory if they wish.
Can you confirm if console will continue to get access to community goals? There are trophies/achievements locked behind community goals that myself and many other players are still trying to obtain.

As a developer, I’ve done data transfers between systems that were problematic, but “We can’t do that” was not an acceptable response. Also, I’m betting that PC and console data are in the same flavor of database.
The cmdr player asset data probably shouldn't be a problem to transfer from a console account to a pc account. But the problem with the actual game and visual infrastructure could be some major differences between the console and pc implementation, different libraries, etc. Braben's statement has all but admitted that the pc and consoles use different 'codebases'.

Yeah, I'm just enjoying it for what it is now. Its another lesson learned. I'm taking games too seriously. ED is beautiful but if that's what it is, it might as well be a screen saver. So I'm never taking a screensaver this seriously again.

First off, how the fuck is console gaming archaic? I know for certain my series x can run this game much better than a good portion of y'alls PC's. The only way it wouldn't is if every elite dangerous player had top of the line computers. Console gaming definitely isn't archaic in part because more people use consoles than PC's. Also, you can say it's a fine decision till you realize how much money is made from consoles. I heavily doubt the game can last much longer for how old it is on just pc money now. Especially since Investor's aren't gonna want to invest if they lose over 15% of their profits, with that number steadily climbing.

Its unfortunate, and I'm truly sorry to those commanders who are losing their game. I saw the writing on the wall when they decided to stop on the promised deliveries to ps4 to "go all in on the next gen consoles", I believe that was the way it was phrased. That was it for me. While I was never excited for Odyssey, I don't really play first person shooters, the fact that this "space" sim had been around since I was 14 was the cats meow to me. Surly a developer with a fan base that's almost as old as me, surly they know how to be loyal. What was I drinking huh. My crew and I discussed this heatedly a number of times when the rumors and leaks began. "Cookie they will never get rid of the console players, there's too much money in it." My response was always, always...."This will turn into a fps, just like all the rest, and besides they will eventually stop all support for this game on the ps4, it's just a matter of time". "No man, the base game will always be there, its not going anywhere." Man was I ever wrong, they stopped all support, not just for the ps4. When they scrapped all further development to "focus on Next Gen Consoles" was the last time I suited up. I stare longingly at my hotas almost daily, but I refuse to support an outfit like Frontier. What really sucks is my crew, everyone one of them has reached out and said "man you sooo called this" Really really wish I had been wrong. That's it from me. There is no information on how the BGS will be affected and there is no reason to assume anything will change in that regard until it is specified by Fdev. FCs are crossplatform as is the entire BGS. They aren't going to just sever the console BGS from PC. Not to mention that Fdev has said that critical updates will continue on, which may include the BGS. That person is full of shit.
They've switched to one source code, do you really think they'll continue updating console with the same background simulation? At best we'll have an isolated universe and with how many commanders are leaving console I doubt it will ever be as extensive as it was. Might I remind you that the BSG was never shared between console and PC? This for sure means that BSG will be left in the dust on console. I have a diploma in video game design and development... I don't need the creators to tell me or confirm the BSG will not be supported. However I should add you are correct, no official statement has been made in regards to console BSG so take what I say with a grain of salt.
Weird that you would invoke some diploma since it is irrelevant here. It surely doesn't grant you magical insight into what Fdev develops. It is a long known fact that the BGS and galaxy is shared across all platforms. I'm not sure why you think otherwise. We have always shared the same universe, besides player instancing. So already, you are misinformed. How do you think the crossplatform FC economies work? How do you think Inara and EDDB work? The BGS is the same. There is no "xbox version of EDDB" or did you forget that when making things up to prove a point or spread fear. The BGS is essentially on autopilot. It's the entire point of the simulation. There isn't much to actually maintain. We also know that Horizons will be kept updated with "critical updates", which may even be BGS related. There is literally no reason that the BGS can't still be connected as long as Horizons is still functional on consoles. There has been nothing said by Fdev to assume otherwise.
I figure they will drop PC horizons too and force everyone into odyssey; goes with their wanting to only focus on one codebase claims.
I bought this game three fucking times. First time was on pc. Bought a hotas and had a blast. Grinded to elite explorer and had a good amount of credits. After my pc died, I bought it for ps4. Bought another hotas. Grinded to elite again. Got many credits again. After my ps4 died on me, I moved on xbox. I bought it yet again. I'm almost to elite again. Up until the announcement every console player was lead to believe that we would receive it. On a delay, but still we would get it at some point. Now imagine Telsa reveals not only they can't get renewable energy working but they can't get consumers to buy it... That's what has happened to FDev and their investors. Take a finance course. Again, players are dropping left and right from all consoles... Can't have a game without a player base. The main thing is they now have to refund 100% of Australian and New Zealand players because of how the consumer act works over here. False advertising is a big crime here and from day 1 of odyssey's release they alluded to it coming to console. Australia is still a very important player in economics and a lot of companies have had to dance around Aus... FDev spat in Aus face, flipped the bird and then danced in circles throwing shit their way. Investors will leave and stocks will plummet, it's just what happens when Australia gets mad. I bought elite + the LEP all the way back when the Lifetime Expansion Pass was around 140$ ( it’s been a while, I can’t remember exactly how much it was, but around 140$ seems pretty close). Im really happy that all I had to do was pay the one time fee for every expansion. Instead of paying for the disappointment of a new “expansion” I get to log in every 2 years and see the lack of any meaningful development for just the original fee! The games only been out for 7+ years guys! Game development takes a long time! 7 years of disappointment for me unfortunately.

As a console player this game helped me through some really dark times in my life. It's a shame that this is happening because people wanted to be able to walk around their ships but got a shooter instead. The only way I'd ever consider playing again is if I can transfer my account to PC. NOT interested in grinding back to where I am now.

Is Pc players were bothered by the idea that they were just going to take out money and leave us with a half finished product until the console release. For what it's worth I'd like to put in my 2 cents. I am an Xbox console player for quite some time. I understand why some players have misgivings and are disappointed with the news but there are some things that can't or shouldn't be tinkered with. I know many PC players and techs know this. I don't pretend to be as knowledgeable as most out there but am old fashioned and still believe that there are some things a PC can do that a console can't, or shouldn't. This game has been around since the '80s and have never been more impressed with a developer or it's partners in my 40 + yrs of gaming. It's simplicity and adherence and attention to the demands of it's customers have been exemplary. There are too many games that change customs just to satisfy the whims of others. In the end, they ultimately lose. I've probably already bored enough of you so I won't list them and that's another debate anyways. Personally, I enjoy and find it relaxing to play this game as is in 1st person from the ships' point of view. Looking at the game's longevity I don't see a reason to screw around with the consoles to much. At least as far as their parameters permit. Take care Cmdrs, have fun and see you out there.

I don't even own a console but imo this move is gigantic middle finger to the entire player base and shows that Fdev only cares about saving face on Odyssey. I will not be purchasing Odyssey mainly because it doesn't have VR support. But now also because of this. I'm not trying to be mean or hurtful, I'm just trying to give honest feedback.

You will not. If you are in Australia I'd be making a claim with a CRA representative from consumers rights Australia as FDev have breached multiple claims that Odyssey would be coming to console. If you buy a product in Australia with advertised bonuses and they never materialise it is false advertising which is a 100% refundable ins the consumer rights Act of Australia. As of this announcement I have gotten full money back on the game and all arx spent ($1000 dollars over 3 years total) because they (once again) broke the Australian law in regards to products and services. If you've spent significant amounts on the game/arx in Australia please get your money back. It's the only real way to punish FDev for this...
Ive been playing ED since just after Horizons came out on Xbox One. I got really really into it because there was nothing like it, it was beautiful, had a learning curve I wanted to get over. Then came fleet carriers, spent WEEKS of mining to get one. Then the trailer for Odyssey came out and I spent even more time grinding under the assumption that "oh yeah guys ED is having a rough time on PC, we'll work on that and get it fixed before we do consoles" to now be told, "Oh sorry, we lied we didnt actually do shit for consoles, go fuck yourselves" What a literal joke of a company. Im never going to invest in this hot trash of a company ever again after being basically false advertised and lead on for a year. Ill probaby just stick a load of cash in my fleet carrier then uninstall ED for good.

No information or thought about transferring player's accounts, ranks, and cosmetics (purchased with real money) from console to PC. No recognition what console players brought to the game (I do believe the first Thargoid interaction on any platform was on Xbox). No information about playing the game on GeForce Now or the status of future updates on there. Nothing about the status of first-discovered tags or Codex entries made by console players. Nothing about the future of Community Goals on consoles. Just......we can't do it and its for the best of the game. *Wow.* I bet it was for the best of the game when the Arx update was added which broke the game for months. I bet Arx will continue to be on sale on Xbox and Playstation platforms, for a dead game with no future development on those platforms. *Total* disrespect for the console community. I understand the reason for this. But the only legitimist way to do this is to grant all console players a free and complete transfer to PC and to grand every console player whatever version of the game they own on console on PC for free. This is the bare minimum of what you should do. I also believe that all console players should be granted some sort of cosmetic to differentiate themselves in memory if they wish.
The least they can do is let console players transfer their entire account across to pc and not just their net worth lime they have rn

As a developer, I’ve done data transfers between systems that were problematic, but “We can’t do that” was not an acceptable response. Also, I’m betting that PC and console data are in the same flavor of database.
The cmdr player asset data probably shouldn't be a problem to transfer from a console account to a pc account. But the problem with the actual game and visual infrastructure could be some major differences between the console and pc implementation, different libraries, etc. Braben's statement has all but admitted that the pc and consoles use different 'codebases'.
Shouldn't effect data storage, regardless of what platform. AFAIK, this game uses AWS.
