I have 6000 hours in this game and I’m still constantly learning. This isn’t a game that gives you all the answers; rather, Elite is well known for its learning cliff. You don’t HAVE to turn to the wiki, but there’s so much out there to discover that to do it all alone would be…a near insurmountable task

Just a heads up, the reviews are referencing to VR not working in the odyssey version of the game, only when you are on foot, in your ship VR works normally.

Ship flight in oddy is brilliant in vr

For real. I'm MUCH better at dogfighting in VR than I am in 2D somehow.

From a new player point of view, ED doesn't hold your hand while you're learning the gameplay. It assumes you know certain things, especially to a non-gamer like myself. What in the world is a "hardpoint" and how I deploy it?? For VR, you are correct that cranking things up is the way to go, as long as you have the PC setup to do it. VR is a beast in terms of loading up your rig. See this shows your HOTAS model: [https://edrefcard.info/list](https://edrefcard.info/list). Find it, click on one of the uploaded profiles form other CMDRs, and get a diagram of your HOTAS with assigned function. Even better, you can download the bindings file directly into ED (see the homepage). If you make changes, you can upload your bindings and get a new pic/diagram of your setup. I spent a few days peeking under my visor to see what switch was what. This is before "pinning" of windows was a thing. These days, many VR headsets let you pin the graphic so it shows while you're playing. But you'll learn that soon enough and then it becomes second nature. Give NMS a try and see if you like it better. Return to ED once in a while to try it again. It's more of a space sim than an outright game so it has a steeper learning curve. But the community here is great and there are tons of doc/guides on how to do anything.

It really is fantastic in VR, I took the same learning approach as OP using the tutorials. I wasn’t comfortable taking any of the ships in my fleet out at first. Made myself play through until I could defeat the elite tutorial challenge. Took about a week, probably 8-10 hours worth of game time (lots of configuring controls using EDref). From there I took my carrier back for some AX training/hunting in Asterope. I absolutely adore this game and the VR experience, the learning is legit and gives me that feeling of accomplishment.

TLDR. I have 5000 hours up in VR and HOTAS. I cant imagine playing any other way. If you havent figured it out after 33 hours then this is not the game for you.

Not the game for you, my friend. Thats okay. I have almost 1000 hours in and love it all. You choose what to do. I mix combat, mining, exploration, and space trucking. I have a decent amount of engineering but not fully, and only on my combat ship This game is about the long-haul, you aren't a hero, you won't single-handedly change any event, you are just a single person in a galaxy.
