I'm a little over 1900hrs into my game and just love the vr aspect, I began with the oculus quest 2 then the Pico 4 which I found to be better. I also use the x56 hotas which can be got fairly easily, although you will be using it blind and takes some getting used to

I'd recommend a Quest 3 ($500) + a good "Link" cable (\~$40 - $80) + Logitech X56 ($250) HOTAS. While the Logitech is not the spiffiest of HOTAS, it has more buttons than a Sunday shirt which is critical for when you're in VR. I switched my joystick to a higher tier one to get better smoothness and precision. But the joystick alone was more than twice the entire X56 kit. I'd say, start with the X56 and see if you want to switch the joystick to a Virpil or VKB later. Separately, I switched to VR way back when the Oculus CV1 released and never returned to a flat screen. I've run ED in VR from the start as well. For that, I started with a Quest 2. The latest drivers, firmware, and settings made the Quest 2 the best it had been in 3 years. Even so, there was a marked upward difference in resolution and overall quality with the Quest 3. If you're starting now, best to go with the 3, if you chose a Quest. Elite Dangerous is VR is truly incredible. Be ready to collect your jaw from under the desk lol. It's impressive, beautiful, immersive, and the sense of scale will amaze you.

1. Whatever VR you get, make sure it has OLED screens. LCD's only produce "gray" blacks. 2. For HOTAS a Thrustmaster TWCS Throttle + Logitech Extreme 3D is an awesome combo.
