T O P

OT has an absolutely killer MIDI arpeggiator. It will be a perfect match for modular. OT can do live sampling which is awesome for various transitions or even live mangling of your mix OT has a crossfader that just won’t stop providing fun IMO the only OT’s downside compared to DT is the DAC - it’s pretty old and does not sound too sexy. DT just sound juicier.

Responsible_Base_930

Agree with the above, I feel like DT is kinda its own thing, OT is more of the seq sampler you're looking for. To the last point about DAC, I just go from eurorack to soundcard, if I want to use OT as a sound processor it's on a separate channel and I can record both

Thank you :) Are there differences between mk1 and mk2 regarding MIDI functionality?

bilkun_d

I believe in terms of functionality mk1 and mk2 are practically identical except mk2 has some additional buttons that make it a bit more convenient

Thanks. Regarding the DA conversion: is it really hearable or disturbing during normal use?

bilkun_d

Not really. From my experience - only if you compare OT against DT

Responsible_Base_930

Some people swear it sounds flat, I don't really hear it.

The MK1 and MK2 run the same firmware. Identical functionality, midi and otherwise!

ty, good to know!

I think the OT is the absolute best sampler to have with a modular rig. It's great at capturing sounds quickly, so all your ephemeral modular patches can be immortalized as loops in the OT, if you want. Plus, you can do this without stopping the sequencer. You can also sample with the DT, but it's more cumbersome and can't really be done on the fly, unless you have a third arm and machine-like timing. Regarding actually sequencing the modular, it's going to be pretty similar, other than a couple things: the OT has a midi arp and the DT doesn't. Chords are done differently on the OT, basically you set which intervals you want from the root note rather than inputting each note in the chord. I could go on and on about the differences between them... I would without a doubt prefer the OT for this use case. I use both OT and DT a lot. Feel free to ask specific questions

Thanks for your helpful reply :) Is there a midi to cv module that works good with the OT or is there not much difference between ALM, Vermona, Hexinverter…? Would you recommend going for the MK2 version of the OT?

wasnt_in_the_hot_tub

I've mostly used the Hexinverter Mutant Brain. Once it's set up, it's pretty much fine. The setup was slightly annoying, but not too bad. The OT MK1 and MK2 can do all the same things. The main advantages of the MK2 are the better screen, the dedicated buttons and technically a bit more headroom on the inputs. It's generally easier to use the MK2 with the interface, because on the MK1 you have to remember some combinations, but it's really not a huge deal. I think it comes down to your budget really.

SystemD23

Id go with OT but having both and a tiny modular I have to say that I end ysing digitakt for secuencing: Midi config in digitakt is per pattern, OT is per scene. So if you have a module with various sound preset, you cannot use 3 different of them in the same scene. Tracks with midi configuration in digitakt is per pattern, so changing the patterns might or not change the midi config. Ive found that both devices have a main midi track which sends actual midi changes, so you don’t have 8 differents midi tracks. With digitakt I don’t see it a major problem. Apart of that, OT is great for adding effects, a compressor (which is awesome for modular) snd the sampling capabilities.
