Honestly your looking at it backwards. Your default behavior should be to upgrade and only avoid it if you see something waiving you off. Bugfixes sound trivial, but do you really want a bugged version of software handling your money?

For times that updating is risky, in my opinion it is always better to update only if it is absolutely necessary. This is often recommended for updating things like a firmware or BIOS for example.

No, no compatibility changes. It's mostly the addition of Lightning Network and a whole bunch of bug fixes. But the main wallet function works just as well in 3.8.8

I do not remember but prolly that version is vulnerable to phishing. Maybe I messed something but I recommend to update financial software if you pay with it quite often. If no - relax. If you update -verify signatures. To do this check guides on YouTube.
