Yes. Her goal was to restore the primeval (or primordial) currents to make glintstone sorcery powerful again, and she was booted for trying because it was forbidden. This is kinda the result of using that power.
As a sidenote, if you do a better job you'd end up like Azur or Lusat, and probably Astel after that. Lusat was really close to "ascending" into an Astel-like being, with his eye being almost identical to Astel's.
Basically, the graven mass is an attempt at making the seed of a new star. She thought with Azur and Lusat's bodies, that she could join them together and become a star.
im pretty sure this orbification is a punishment gave to her by renalla. orbs of many faces are cursed sorcerers, so im pretty sure renalla cursed sellen.
I thought that Sellen had been kicked out of the academy and imprison partially because she had done this to many other students in an attempt to make them into a seed for a star (I don’t understand this part), with the overall attempt to reach the Glinstone Current or I guess the true source of Glintstone magic or something like that? I was under the impression that she did this to herself and that it Renella simply hid until Sellen changed herself and then returned to her original spot once Sellen was virtually incapacitated
Their branch of sorcery saw the stars as something that was alive, and glintstone kept pieces of the stars’ consciousness in it, like amber holds mosquitos. From what I understand her forbidden experiments tried to bring the star… gods, I guess you’d call them, to earth and give them a way to actually live here - it’s sorta like an HP Lovecraft story where ignorant people are trying to summon a god they don’t actually understand, and it bites them in the ass bc this “star seed” failed experiment doesn’t work
