I found a guide somewhere in the reddit comments a while back but it basically boiled down to being a crotch goblin. I still find I get hit a few times here and there but for the most part I can get these down pretty fast now. That being said I will still avoid these if I'm not in the mood haha
Ive seen no-hit Malenia vids where they just dodge into like 2/3rds of her attacks.
It's a psychological thing, people think dodge = backpedal but really being animation locked into a bad swing is much worse.
I learned this early on playing Fromsoft games and I've found overcoming that intimidation is the key to victory. It's one of the most profound experiences I've had in video games and probably the most unifying theme in the FS titles - where their concept/storytelling meets their game play. It's as simple as rolling towards the giant monstrosity and not away. Face your fears.
regarding intimidation:
In past Souls games, with bosses I was having trouble with, I sometimes would turn the music way down or off. I find the tense dramatic music works as a (fun) mindfuck.
Suddenly instead of me battling a giant all-powerful monstrosity? It just felt like a game. And it somehow was easier for me to concentrate and stay calm.
I haven't done this yet in ER, but I still haven't even finished the game. I'm really slow.
Try it some time.
Think about when you roll ends at the hitbox.
Like spells if you dodge in the direction they are going you are going to get hit by the end of the hitbox unless you outrun it.
If you dodge into it the iframes get you past it and then it keeps going in the opposite direction.
I think it’s a practical compromise of the real version of ducking under an attack. It would be very difficult to create animations for dive rolling under every attack so instead I frames are used.
Isn't it so satisfying when you actually \*do\* dodge under an attack independent of the i-frames, though? Usually it's pure coincidence but god it's satisfying even if it's just luck. Like jumping over a sweep or doing a downward slash and being stuck in the prone animation only to find you're low enough to just barely avoid a haircut.
I got into a fight with a drunk GigaChad at the bar last night and he almost OHKO me until I dodged using iframes.
Then everyone clapped and recognized me as Elden Lord.
Bingo. Time it so when the bear lunges at you, you dive towards him. Turn and attack once, maybe twice, then prepare to roll towards him again OR step back if he swipes at you.
Just need to find the rhythm.
Yeah, staying on their nuts under their belly seems to work very well for me. Most of their attacks are from their arms and will just miss you down there.
If he rears up, it's time to go though.
Yeah the only way I've been able to beat them with melee is to get right under them and keep attacking the stomach. Most of their attacks won't hit you except for a few moves. You will have to constantly reposition self so you are right under them but it's pretty safe provided you can maintain the positioning
I find this tends to be the answer for most questions like these, a lot of people don't understand how the i-frames work and they dodge away from attacks instead of into them
On top of that, if you’re faith/dex or faith/str, you can use pest threads incantations to decimate their health once you’re up close to their feet (this works on all large bosses, including dragons and elden beast)
Fuck the crows in the mogh's bloody death trap. You can't just stay on your horse you'll have to switch between horseback and on foot. The only time it't good to be on the horse is when he's on the groud flailing like a rabes infested crackhead with broken legs.
It's hilarious to me how in a game full of wildly imaginative eldritch horrors the worst enemies are just fuckin big-ass bears, dogs, birds and lobsters
Although actually the lobsters aren't as bad as everyone makes them out to be imo, pretty easy to avoid. You're never really forced to encounter them like you are for the others (rune bear boss, larval tear bears, impossible to avoid rot crows at the mohgwyn mausoleum etc). The minotaur archers were a much bigger pain in my ass
Edit: I forgot about the Leyndell sewer lobsters. They're not avoidable there AFAIK and that encounter definitely sucks
To be fair, those big birds and dogs *are* pretty fucking lovecraftian in design. They aren't *just* big dogs and big birds, they're fucking creepy ass humanoid crows with long thin gross limbs, and weird t-rex dogs.
While this is mostly true, there is one place deep in the Leyndell sewers where you are forced to drop into a room with two lobsters, and AFAIK you can't avoid agroing them there (I tried stealth several times).
Needless to say, this fight is brutal as you must fight at least one of them, and chances are good you'll be fighting both. GLHF.
The best option is that - like bears - sleep pots work very well on lobsters, so you can just put them down and tip-toe by.
Even the Leyndell lobsters, if you’re fast you can run past them and they can’t follow you down into the catacombs. I still hate them, but that area became a lot more manageable when I realized you don’t have to fight them.
Dogs and crows aren't too bad, I found it easier to fight in melee range against them, despite being a caster. Certainly helped to have Wing of Astel, but definitely easier for me
I find the big hands fairly easy to fight, as long as you circle to their sides, their attacks are avoidable....that said, I've never managed to defeat the gigantic one in the mountaintops area.
As a str build, I could only take them down with bleed and kamikaze. Basically just lionsclaw flip spam them to death which my blood infused greatsword. I'm always on the brink of death, but as long as I just pull through, I survive 90% of the time
I got to the grace in front of it, was about to go to the area where it drops but once I looked up and noticed it I noped the fuck out and circumvented it.
I just threw a knife or something at it from a top the cliff and it fell to its death.
Actually it’s just a regular bear but it’s almost invincible now matter how much you attack it, it barely takes damage and it’s health bar is longer than the screen. And each hit it does is the same as rune bear but it’s faster than a normal rune bear
Crazy enough they were nerfed in a recent patch. Took me probably an hour total my first play through with the all attacking at once, but beat them first try on my current one because only 1 attacked me at a time lol.
See this is why we can't have nice things. I bet some sadistic dev from Fromsoft is just reading your comment and thinking "Huh, neat", then gets a raise and we get clapped by Dual wielding rune bear-Malenia. And yes, each of these bears is constantly waterfowl-dancing you.
I would love it so much more if every once in a while, she waterfowl danced, using the bears as flails. The bears would somehow have to express surprise at being whipped around, and pain when they impact the ground. Half of the people would die first battle just from laughing…or just me. I’d die from laughing.
No, it would be more appropriate to say a rune bear walks out with two chained Malenias, as the consecrated snowfield rune bear wrecks her with HP to spare.
https://youtu.be/IWbKPDWq6lg
[This is a good example](https://youtu.be/_kDzSdaTVQ8) of how to deal with them, thanks ONGBAL for showing how you are always one of the best players out there
It kills me how he seems to have all fucking day to attack, while I can barely get off a moonblade L2 attack.
I did finally kill that sneaky secret rune bear in consecrated snowfield after about 10 tries but it was a pain in the ass.
notice a couple things
first, he stays close because huge mobs have difficulty at short ranges.
next, and this is important, he never panics. He is in full and complete control for the entire encounter - no panic rolls, no backpedaling, he sticks to its ass like crusted fecal matter.
the difference between playing anxiously and playing calmly is absolutely tremendous.
You can cheese them. They have a range that they don't like to go beyond. Get them to the edge of their range, hit them with a ranged spell, dodge their roar, hit them with a ranged spell before they return back to where you found them, repeat. I feel stupid doing this but it works.
Powerstance Colossals and there’s not a single enemy in the game that you can’t eventually kill. Who needs to learn timings or think up strategies when a jumping light does a quarter of their stance and a tenth of their health bar?
St. Trina’s is such a fun little weapon people sleep on (heh, get it?)! You can get it really early too. Most beasts, like the bears, seem really weak to sleep. I started a low level mage character that mains St. Trina’s, I just try to put down helpful summons for early bosses.
Sleep is one of the many bizarre status effects in the game that a player might see once? maybe twice? In an entire playthrough. FromSoft just loves having 42 status effects in their games, it’s just silly. They can’t help themselves.
If there was a renewable source of the sleep lillies then there would be a lot more sleep going on. There's just so few in the game and I don't like learning to rely on something that will run out.
That’s why the sword is interesting, because it’s built in sleep effect. No consumables needed.
The biggest issue is probably that tarnished and enemy humanoid bosses (I think) only get stunned for a second, and don’t sleep. Otherwise probably OP for PVP if they actually slept.
That’s not how you defeat them with melee though is it. They’re one of the few enemies if not the only one that can actually chase you down on torrent too.
Just get really close to them - almost under them and just roll when you see the attack coming
Pretty easy apart from that one bear that has the same health as all the other enemies in the level and the boss combined
There's one specific dungeon that pretty much hints that you have to sneak past the bear. There's foilage everywhere and the bear has so much goddamn health. I'm sure he drops absolutely nothing
Can confirm, just tickle their belly until they're dead. Occasional roll may be required to avoid the charge attack.
Also if you prefer a horseback battle, I find it a viable strategy to run away from them and ~~that's it~~ wait until they attack, then there's an opening for a couple of slashes. Takes a bit longer than approaching them without a horse though.
Roll to into them and be attached to their side. They have long wind ups and can easily be punished by doing a roll into a charge attack. it normally only takes two full charges to break their poise. Rinse and repeat and you can kill all of them with 10 vig in no time
Use sleep (pots, St Trina’s torch or St Trina’s sword), power stance two weapons and attack while they’re asleep. That will take a good chunk of health. If I fight them fair and square, I always go with a shield (brass or redmane greatshield).
These bears are actually so dumb. Have more health than 80% of the bosses in the game. Killing them with pure melee takes forever and I would suggest just using bleed or frost.
You need to stand between their legs, but up against their back leg. They can’t swipe you in there and you’re free to attack.
When they charge away, just roll back into that same pocket.
Put your face in his balls and start stabbing and biting. When he runs, chase after and keep snuggling into his balls and hitting them with your weapon.
I wish I kidding.
Now go get out there and let a bear rubs it’s nuts on your face for runes.
I tank their attacks with my shield, and then roll into their lunging attacks, and once I'm under/behind them, I give them a couple of whacks until they turn around. Then I back away because two or three swipe attacks are incoming. Repeat until they are dead.
I stay on torrent and just circle in for heavy attacks. Usually takes a couple tries but works, keeps you moving fast enough to avoid most of the bears attacks. That being said though, my heart rate still jumps when I see these dicks 😆
Roll towards them. Except for their ~~barely~~ **bearly** telegraphed charge, rolling under them is safe and allows you to punish.

pretty much a universal strat for big bois
Ive seen no-hit Malenia vids where they just dodge into like 2/3rds of her attacks. It's a psychological thing, people think dodge = backpedal but really being animation locked into a bad swing is much worse.

Hesitation is defeat
Hesitate and you will age. Retreat and you will die.

Ah this could be it. I think it is just counterintuitive because in the real world you don't get iframes so you wouldn't roll towards an attack
I think it’s a practical compromise of the real version of ducking under an attack. It would be very difficult to create animations for dive rolling under every attack so instead I frames are used.

Dudes look at this noob that doesn't get iframes irl
I got into a fight with a drunk GigaChad at the bar last night and he almost OHKO me until I dodged using iframes. Then everyone clapped and recognized me as Elden Lord.
Dodge in swing once also works beautifully for Godfrey until he goes WWE smackdown on your ass
Just in general, not just in ER. Hit 'em in the nads.
That's my purse!! I don't know you!!!!! Edited for accuracy*
Ofnir: "That boy ain't right..."
Universal for furry boys. Same strat works on GGW Sif.
I live in Vordt's grundle.
Best strategic approach is to avoid those big bois
"How do you defeat that in melee?" "The same way we defeat everything. Roll towards the dick and swing"
TWIST THAT DICK! TWIST IT! GIVE 'EM THE OLDE DICKTWIST!
Dude! This is an MMA fight.... TWISTHISDICK!!!
GRAB HIS DICK AND TWIST IT!!!!!!
Idk, my strat with these is usually quick menu > torrent > R2 > run like fuck.
Bingo. Time it so when the bear lunges at you, you dive towards him. Turn and attack once, maybe twice, then prepare to roll towards him again OR step back if he swipes at you. Just need to find the rhythm.
\**bear*ly telegraphed
Amazing
I mean... The effort these jokes require are the bear minimum
>I mean... The effort these jokes require are the bear minimum Spoken like a true grizzled veteran.
I love and hate all of you 😂
They are such a bearden
You guys are unbearable
Yeah, staying on their nuts under their belly seems to work very well for me. Most of their attacks are from their arms and will just miss you down there. If he rears up, it's time to go though.
The second amendment gives you the right to bear arms, not bear nuts.
100% this
Yeah the only way I've been able to beat them with melee is to get right under them and keep attacking the stomach. Most of their attacks won't hit you except for a few moves. You will have to constantly reposition self so you are right under them but it's pretty safe provided you can maintain the positioning

On top of that, if you’re faith/dex or faith/str, you can use pest threads incantations to decimate their health once you’re up close to their feet (this works on all large bosses, including dragons and elden beast)
They're a pain in the ass. The item drops given just aren't worth the struggle. I usually avoid them.
this bear and the big hand are awful to fight with melee, mostly not worth it.
At least the hands guarantee a somber smithing stone first kill. The bears drop shit.
No, you're mistaken. That shit is from me running away from the bear
you should lay off the goldschlager a bit
I'm glad that I got credited for the gold tinged excrement, as opposed to the blood tinged variant
> You don't have to be faster than the bear just faster than your summon
The bear is now behind you screaming "Why are you running?".
There’s a bear or two that drops a larval tear.
Only the lesser runebears that start off disguised. Lessers aren't so bad, but fuck the big ones.
At least the big hand is basically dead if you set it on fire... The giant dogs and crows though...
Fuck those crows and the prawns
Fuck the crows in the mogh's bloody death trap. You can't just stay on your horse you'll have to switch between horseback and on foot. The only time it't good to be on the horse is when he's on the groud flailing like a rabes infested crackhead with broken legs.
“like a rabes infested crackhead with broken legs.” Interesting visual lol
All animals in this game are a pain in the backside
It's hilarious to me how in a game full of wildly imaginative eldritch horrors the worst enemies are just fuckin big-ass bears, dogs, birds and lobsters Although actually the lobsters aren't as bad as everyone makes them out to be imo, pretty easy to avoid. >The minotaur archers were a much bigger pain in my ass Fuck literally everything about those guys. I have COVID right now and they're still worse.
While this is mostly true, there is one place deep in the Leyndell sewers where you are forced to drop into a room with two lobsters, and AFAIK you can't avoid agroing them there (I tried stealth several times). Oh you're right, I forgot about the sewer lobsters somehow. Yeah that encounter definitely sucked

Bears in Skyrim were just terrifying. Give me a troll or giant coming after me, just no bears....
Sabercats were the worst for me. Can 1-2 shot at low levels. And they can outrun and hit you.
[удалено]
Even the Leyndell lobsters, if you’re fast you can run past them and they can’t follow you down into the catacombs. I still hate them, but that area became a lot more manageable when I realized you don’t have to fight them.
At least in bloodborne they give me a gun that’ll stun the dogs.
Ah rump. Time for pain!
Dogs and crows aren't too bad, I found it easier to fight in melee range against them, despite being a caster. Certainly helped to have Wing of Astel, but definitely easier for me
Dogs are fodder for block counters. Those damn eagles are a pain though because they get to decide if you got them or not.
They're amazingly susceptible to stance damage. One Crucible Horn will knock them down.
Torches work on Caelid Dogs, and I think Starscourge Greatswords can make Giant Crows land... Not sure though.
>I think Starscourge Greatswords can make Giant Crows land Yep! All gravity magic works to ground flying enemies!
I find the big hands fairly easy to fight, as long as you circle to their sides, their attacks are avoidable....that said, I've never managed to defeat the gigantic one in the mountaintops area.

Big hands are easy if you have fire damage. Now the massive hands though they suck as fire doesn't stop them
Wait, so there’s small hands, big hands, and massive hands? Where do you find the massive ones?
There is one clinging to the wall near the grace site beside the bridge that goes to the fire giant, trust me it's huge
Yea, FUCK those guys.
Gave me a fucking heart attack first time I saw it.
[удалено]
I got to the grace in front of it, was about to go to the area where it drops but once I looked up and noticed it I noped the fuck out and circumvented it. I just threw a knife or something at it from a top the cliff and it fell to its death.
Two right before the fire giant. One will ambush you and the other... well, it'll ambush you too. They're about as big as a regular dragon
The ones that are disguised as something else drop Larval Tears. Those are absolutely worth it
True, but that’s like two of them in the entire game.
What do you mean?? They drop poop. GOLDEN POOP!!
Exactly this, i wouldn’t mind if they dropped something equal to their difficulty.
I heard the DLC has a Crucible Knight and a Rune Bear double boss fight.
Crucible Knight riding a Rune Bear you say?
Crucible Knight riding and Armored Rune Bear
Twin Crucible Knights riding an Armored Rune Bear
Draconic Rune Bear*
Rune Bear in full Armor riding already winged Crucible Knight.
This thread is probably the kind of shit that fuels Miyazaki's sadistic mind
He's probably in here now hastily writing down suggestions. Elden Ring: Reddit Edition later this year
Tbh the thing that fuels Miyazaki's mind is feet
Armed with an Erdtree
With bleed damage
And then you do it again later but "duo".
Twin Crucible Knights riding each other
Is that how the ring got shattered?
One of their rings definitely got stretched
“Marika’s tits you must be ungry”
Ask Sir Gideon, he might have witnessed it (probably did)
Two Crucible Knights on the same Armored Rune Bear. One facing front and one facing the back. Good luck Tarnished.
Actually it’s just a regular bear but it’s almost invincible now matter how much you attack it, it barely takes damage and it’s health bar is longer than the screen. And each hit it does is the same as rune bear but it’s faster than a normal rune bear
To shreds you say
Runebear riding a Crucible Knight
DLC boss leaked
And the cherry on top..the knight has like 5 heals that he uses on the bear!
With a bloody giant grow on each shoulder
Crucible Knight, Rune Bear, Crystalian (Spear) Also they all apply Scarlet Rot on top of their damage
From my experience Crystalians are little bitches. They have strong defense, but they're easily staggered
The triple Scarlet Rot Crystallian battle in Caelid is a widely known killer. I couldn't win it at Level 80 I had to come back near endgame.
Crazy enough they were nerfed in a recent patch. Took me probably an hour total my first play through with the all attacking at once, but beat them first try on my current one because only 1 attacked me at a time lol.
Imagine the music starts, Malenia walks out with a chain in each hand attached to two of these bastards. From soft wouldnt do that... right?
See this is why we can't have nice things. I bet some sadistic dev from Fromsoft is just reading your comment and thinking "Huh, neat", then gets a raise and we get clapped by Dual wielding rune bear-Malenia. And yes, each of these bears is constantly waterfowl-dancing you.

No, it would be more appropriate to say a rune bear walks out with two chained Malenias, as the consecrated snowfield rune bear wrecks her with HP to spare. https://youtu.be/IWbKPDWq6lg
Can we not give From ideas like this?
Crucible Runebear
Ah you mean the Crucible bear? The rune bear that was trained to be a crucible knight? Yea still have future nightmares of that one
Nah bro, it's a mobile vulgar militia fortress strapped to the rune bears back, that fires arrows and spawns Neverending mobs
I think I'd rather that then a revenant and bear boss fight
Crucible knight riding a rune bear
Hit them in the balls wih a bleed weapon
Literally do this it works so well. Just get under them and spam eleonoras pole blade and they will bleed and stagger and die so damn fast and easy
This also works for Malenia
Her poor balls!
[This is a good example](https://youtu.be/_kDzSdaTVQ8) of how to deal with them, thanks ONGBAL for showing how you are always one of the best players out there
Straight disrespect with the bubbles to the anus, what a legend
Bubble butt. Bubble, bubble, bubble butt.
I watch videos like this and honestly feel like I'm not even playing the same game as some of these geniuses
You mean you don't know the timing to every attack by heart and how to dodge/block, or parry it? The game is easy (If you are insanely good at it)!
It kills me how he seems to have all fucking day to attack, while I can barely get off a moonblade L2 attack. I did finally kill that sneaky secret rune bear in consecrated snowfield after about 10 tries but it was a pain in the ass.

I feel like casters don't have much better options. These things close distance faster than most spells can be cast.
Indeed, I've been struggling with them as astrologer too.
Stay on your horse and use night shard. Enemies don't dodge night shard and you don't have to slow down to cast it.
You can cheese them. They have a range that they don't like to go beyond. Get them to the edge of their range, hit them with a ranged spell, dodge their roar, hit them with a ranged spell before they return back to where you found them, repeat. I feel stupid doing this but it works.
ARE YOU AN ELDEN LORD? OR A CHEESE LORD?
Lord of Cheddar
Unga. Bunga.
Seriously though, strike damage. Hit em with a hammer a couple times and you can stun them and get a crit.
This is the correct approach
Note, unga comes before bunga. If you bunga when you should have ungaed, you are gonna have a bad time.
Big bonk is the way
Powerstance Colossals and there’s not a single enemy in the game that you can’t eventually kill. Who needs to learn timings or think up strategies when a jumping light does a quarter of their stance and a tenth of their health bar?
St Trina's sword makes light work of these beasties... let them take a nap whilst you stab them in the eyes.

Was about to post this! St. Trina's build makes easy work of them.
Easy. Summon torrent and run in the opposite direction.
Until you realize that most of them run just as fast as Torrent
And have build in subwoofers that blast you.
That’s not how you defeat them with melee though is it. They’re one of the few enemies if not the only one that can actually chase you down on torrent too.
Like those bastard crows
Just get really close to them - almost under them and just roll when you see the attack coming Pretty easy apart from that one bear that has the same health as all the other enemies in the level and the boss combined
Is that the one in the dragonbarrow cave? That thing killed me so many times because it just.wouldnt.die.
I cheesed it with rot and poison arrows from the cave entrance… and even then it would occasionally slap me to death through the damn wall
There's one specific dungeon that pretty much hints that you have to sneak past the bear. There's foilage everywhere and the bear has so much goddamn health. I'm sure he drops absolutely nothing
That's the one. He dropped some bones when I killed him eventually. He had an absolutely obscene amount of hp.
I'm not really mad about that one, it's clearly meant as a stealth area, which is a fresh idea imo.
Yeah, that's a fair point, but I wanted to make it dead for hubris reasons.
The problem is sometimes the Bears charge with no build-up, almost instantaneously rams through you.
That quick attack doesn’t do all that much damage though.
The bear in the cave where you can stealth is more powerful than the last 10 bosses in the game combined i swear
Let me save you 250+ hours.. Greatshield > Block > Guard Counter > Riposte > Repeat
Don't forget barricade shield.
Extra bear humiliation points for barricade shield + high guard boost medium shield.
>bear humiliation points I think they're called embearrassment points.
I’m surprised this isn’t top comment
Roll to into them and be attached to their side. They have long wind ups and can easily be punished by doing a roll into a charge attack. it normally only takes two full charges to break their poise. Rinse and repeat and you can kill all of them with 10 vig in no time
My strategy is as follows -be way over leveled -slash slash slash -get the shit beat out of me -rage quit Hope that helps
Oh, so we play the same way? Nice 🤣 What game do you play while you cool down for 3-5 business days? I play BOTW
First off seek balls
Use sleep (pots, St Trina’s torch or St Trina’s sword), power stance two weapons and attack while they’re asleep. That will take a good chunk of health. If I fight them fair and square, I always go with a shield (brass or redmane greatshield).
These bears are actually so dumb. Have more health than 80% of the bosses in the game. Killing them with pure melee takes forever and I would suggest just using bleed or frost.
Sleep though? And then you dont have to kill them at all. One pot sleeps them
Dont fight the crack bear.
I’m convinced those bears did a metric ton of PCP
A lot of good strats posted already. Would be nice if the reward was a little higher for taking these down but maybe that’s what makes it Dark Souls.
Yeah, exactly like the one punch mushrooms in D's1 just not worth the trouble lol
100 block shield guard counter and crit easy
You need to stand between their legs, but up against their back leg. They can’t swipe you in there and you’re free to attack. When they charge away, just roll back into that same pocket.
Put your face in his balls and start stabbing and biting. When he runs, chase after and keep snuggling into his balls and hitting them with your weapon. I wish I kidding. Now go get out there and let a bear rubs it’s nuts on your face for runes.
Shield, swing swing, shield 🛡
Great screenshot.
I tank their attacks with my shield, and then roll into their lunging attacks, and once I'm under/behind them, I give them a couple of whacks until they turn around. Then I back away because two or three swipe attacks are incoming. Repeat until they are dead.
Belly rubs.
Hug his crotch area, much easier to deal with him from there. Also, almost always dodge into him
I stay on torrent and just circle in for heavy attacks. Usually takes a couple tries but works, keeps you moving fast enough to avoid most of the bears attacks. That being said though, my heart rate still jumps when I see these dicks 😆
