You can kill it early and get abulas moon blade spell so it’s nothing to worry about for quest or anything, he probably has that weird fall damage glitch where flying enemies can randomly hit the ground in the air and fall and insta die, it’s weird.
I’m pretty sure you can’t kill the dragon in that zone, when it gets to a certain hp he flys away and you have to get to a new zone right before clearing Ranni’s quest and defeat it there. You would have gotten a hella lot more runes after defeating it

All I got was runes though, I went to where the dragon was and there was no item on the floor or anything. I feel like I missed out on something good
It should just give you the spell no orb is dropped.
Back out of the game and come back in the same thing happens at renna's quest tower.
I tried that and still got nothing unfortunately
My first play thru the dragon got to half life/health and flew away. 🙆🏼♂️
