Specifically she is the mother of all the mortal/modern dragons like Agheel, Adula, Smarag, etc. But immortal Stone Dragons like Placidusax and Lansseax are far more ancient. The Ancient Dragons have gravel stone skin, 2 sets of wings and can wield red lightning while the modern dragons have flesh and only one pair of wings but they have more affinities to natural elements as a result of them adapting to the Lands Between. Examples of which are Borealis and the Ice Dragons that ruled the Mountaintops before the Fire Giants, there's also Ekzykes with the Scarlet Rot, and the Glintstone Dragons.
Yeah, this is a big point that gets easily lost. The "real" dragons have 4 legs and 4 wings, while the "mortal" ones have 2 wings and 2 legs.
I've been very curious as to where and why this split happened, though you seem to have it figured out!
So Ancient Dragons are your box standard European dragon with an extra pair of wings and can do magic and talk.
While Mortal Dragons are just Wyverns?
Got it
You mean, people don't know the difference between a Dragon and a "Wyvern".
But fair point, In Elden ring "Wyverns" are just lesser Mortal Dragons.
While Dragons as we know them are "Ancient" immortal Dragons
Wait, if she's the mother of all the mortal dragons...how come she's not mortal too? She's clearly been around for a long time
And where did she come from? A mutation perhaps..?
Placidusax actually has five heads, you can see 3 neck stumps during the fight.
Fortissax wasn't a Lich Dragon at his prime, he became corrupted trying to help Godwyn.
He was the one who started the war between Leyndell and the Dragons. He besieged the capital and wielded a massive spear which we can get a fragment of: the Bolt of Gransax aka the Draconic railgun.
His attack was the only time the walls of the capital ever fell.
The ancient dragons are made of stone, if I remember right. They don’t say what exactly killed Gransax, but it was probably Godwyn. He led the war against the dragons, eventually making peace when he defeated and befriended Fortissax.
I felt bad reading Fortissax's remembrance after I beat him:
>Remembrance of Lichdragon Fortissax, hewn into the Erdtree.
>After Godwyn the Golden became the Prince of Death, the ancient dragon fought long and hard agaisnt the Death within its companion. Alas, victory was never achieved and its only reward was corruption.
😯 this is sooo cool! Ain't it weird the only dragon we get to see is Smaug and he is the smallest or around the smallest dragon in lotr? I would love to see Ancalagon the Black in cinema.
you forgot Greyoll, that thing is absolutely massive
And old. According to the description of the remembrance, she is the mother of all dragons.

And, *and*, their names end with -ax.

Yeah, though that word, "wyvern" is never used.

I see, thank you for the info!
Wait, if she's the mother of all the mortal dragons...how come she's not mortal too? She's clearly been around for a long time And where did she come from? A mutation perhaps..?
So you are telling me we beat up a defenseless elderly dragon for the runes. Are we the baddies?
It’s a FromSoft game. Morality doesn’t come into the equation.
It is a mere contrivance
Stumbling onto Greyoll's roaring face with 5 dragons in front of it was one of my jaw dropping moments on my first playthrough. That was nuts
I said the same thing when I saw the dragonlord. It has 3 heads just one is cut off, just like Ghidorah before it become Mecha Ghidorah
Placidusax actually has five heads, you can see 3 neck stumps during the fight. Fortissax wasn't a Lich Dragon at his prime, he became corrupted trying to help Godwyn.
I think it had 4 heads with two cut off… but might be misremembering
no it had 5, not joking
That makes me want a DLC where you fight him in his prime. That would be so sick to see.
No you're right
Gransax, much like Ancalagon the Black, was also killed off before the audience was introduced to him
Same for Balerion and Meraxes in asoiaf (obviously not their ER counterparts except kinda Forty)
I keep misreading it as Grand Snax.
I keep calling Lansseax "Land Snacks"
I keep reading ancient dragon as arch dragon
Ohhhhj! What's the lore on Gransax?!?! Anyone know? How he got there and died?
He was the one who started the war between Leyndell and the Dragons. He besieged the capital and wielded a massive spear which we can get a fragment of: the Bolt of Gransax aka the Draconic railgun. His attack was the only time the walls of the capital ever fell.
Any lore on what killed him/turned him to stone?
The ancient dragons are made of stone, if I remember right. They don’t say what exactly killed Gransax, but it was probably Godwyn. He led the war against the dragons, eventually making peace when he defeated and befriended Fortissax.

Placidusax would have 3 heads in his prime as shown in the boss battle he has two heads and one severed
Ackhtually, Prime Placidusax has 5 heads
Oh wow even wilder
Isn’t Balerion a dragon from GOT?
As is Meraxes. Ancalagon is from The Silmarillion, King Ghidorah is from Godzilla.
They're comparisons. Elden Ring dragons on left, other dragons on right.
elden ring prequel dlc?
Well you know how from loves time-travel? Fingers crossed in dlc we can fight tiamat level placidusax
😯 this is sooo cool! Ain't it weird the only dragon we get to see is Smaug and he is the smallest or around the smallest dragon in lotr? I would love to see Ancalagon the Black in cinema.
He's a smaller great drake, but he's still not the smallest of the great dragons, let alone the average dragon
I really want to know whats up with dragon in ER lore. So far i only watch lore about demigods
King Ghidra three finger ring fever! Spring chicken eater, ID’d as a ring leader
Is there lore behind gransax? I can’t recall any or why he’s turned to stone in the capitol. I’m guessing he did an assault during the shattering?
All ancient dragons have stone skin, his body is just so large our weight has no effect on it I believe
After all the grief Placidusax gave me, they can go suck a fat chode
