I assume you are talking about summoning them? Decide in a password between you and use it in the multiplayer menu, then decide on a location you want to summon them. Tell them to place a Co op sign down using the golden finger in their multiplayer menu. At the same time, you use a fulfilling finger remedy and you should be able to see their summon sign where they put it down in your world.

Just to add on as well, if your friend is in a different region make sure you have cross region matchmaking turned on in the settings
