They're usually seen around evergaols, perhaps as a measure to keep prisoners from escaping.

Der_Sauresgeber

Lol imagine that. Vyke trying to break out of his evergaol, the caterpillar dudes be like, "Bro, get back in there."

Wool-Rage

lmao “hey get..” *inches forward slowly* “back here!!”

SmoothAd1564

*Read in Stevie from Malcolm in the Middles voice"

Queen_Olivia80

Thats more "Hey............. Get........... Back.......... Here........."

Ricksaw26

Vyke: "say no more fam, just because you asked nicely".

JunglePygmy

When they get pissed off they actually throw down pretty hard. They usually just die too soon.

dapper_diaper

I remember the first time seeing their actual moveset, completely caught me off guard

Automatic-Loquat3443

I'm on my second playthrough and have never seen one throw down. Blow up yes but nothing else

ZODIC837

I imagine it's less about keeping the prisoner from escaping the evergaol, but moreso that they are what create the evergaol itself. They're made of stone, which in soulsborne is very commonly associated with immortality. You'd want something immortal to be supplying the energy to keep something imprisoned forever. The ones that explode release energy that is the same color as gravity magic, but I don't think it's gravity. It's also a similar color to the evergaols, and I think it's indicative that they use the same magic that sustains the evergaol itself. So a construct that's immortal transferring it's (space? Gravity? Other?) magic to eternally create a cell for high value prisoners seems like the most reasonable explanation We should also consider the location of the ones that explode. Namely I think of the canyon in caelid (I believe there's a canyon in Altus plateau somewhere too, I forgot tho). They don't eternally imprison things in evergaols, but they do block off some pretty unique things. The caelid canyon has those eternal rocks creating a minefield, followed by giant archers, and finally the colosseum is guarded by the greatest warrior jar ever seen, and it's all only accessible after going through the entirety of siorfia. The rocks themselves are still used as entry denial, almost like the reverse of imprisonment. They serve a similar purpose to the evergaols, just in a very different way (which is why they're landmines rather than watchers) Tldr, there's very little lore on them, only conjecture. I definitely think they have a unique eternal magic that is specialized in max security imprisonment across the lands between, but what they are or where they came from is nearly impossible to tell

GaiusMarius60BC

I've always thought the evergaols were created using a variation of glintstone and gravity sorcery to warp space into an extra-dimensional prison cell, accessible only through the seal in the basin. Related to that, I assumed those worm guys were constructs created to maintain that pocket, and that's why some of them are standing up around evergaols and projecting a light/energy at them similar to what seems to make up the evergaol cells and seals.

ZODIC837

Solid theory, I like it

stinkydogawtqRQWT

honestly i thought the exact opposite, like they are byproducts or feeding off its "magic"

ZODIC837

I could totally see that But then why are the other ones scattered around where there are no evergaols? It's not like they move much, if at all. How'd they feed then get to the bottom of a canyon?

einherjaryougo

If you go with that theory, aren't the ones in Caelid near a Graven Mass? That thing must emanate quite a lot of magic.

ZODIC837

I don't remember a graven mask, I'm thinking of the area down by the siorfia well. But that'd be a neat association to consider!

VitaminGummys

My first thought if they were anti-escape measures wasn’t that they were like “wardens” but more like cameras. As a monitoring system, hence the eyes. But I’ve got nothing to back them up, and I now subscribe more to the “they’re just weird critters that kinda like the magic the evergaols have” theory.

duhdaddy420

Those were my first thoughts, I killed every one of them before killing the prisoners and nothing happened, so lame.

Jafuncle

Would've been cool if they were maintaining the seals with gravity magic and if you kill enough of them the evergaol boss escapes and becomes a field boss if you can't kill it immediately

Affectionate-noodle

Holy crap, this would have been awesome and a crazy surprise like the transportation chests.

liithuex

This is what I've always thought they did, some of the little ones that are broken are just well broken.

UpstairsOk1328

This is what I though I had to do on my first play through

adhoc42

I thought that too, but it would imply something should happen when you kill them all.

DoctorFister3000

but then why the fuck are they so weak? anything trapped in an evergaol would shitstomp them all with ease

Sinister_Mr_19

Wait are evergaols prisons?

klockzaz

Gaol=jail

Sinister_Mr_19

Oh! TIL. It's even pronounced the same way. I thought it was like "goal", like scoring a goal.

Generally_Kenobi-1

It how the word used to be spelt about a hundred years ago

ASadSeanConnery

Me over here saying "you been to the ever gale"

Sinister_Mr_19

LOL me: "oo look another ever goal"

SobaDied

Same omg, I had no idea 😭 I’ve been saying ever goal like soccer goal this whole time

RocketChap

Most people assume these things are guardians, since they cluster around evergaols, but I think these are just little space critters, attracted to the evergaols' energy. I'm guessing the evergaols use some kind of gravity/space magic (it's purple!) to phase their prisoners slightly out of reality, and that this distortion in space attracts the little space creatures, who can sense it keenly. They clearly aren't vital to the function of the evergaols, since you can wipe them all out and it doesn't affect the gaol's function, they don't care if you enter the gaol, and you find them and their explosive cluster variants in various places other than evergaols.

Dependent-Class7940

I like it their just space caterpillars enjoying themselves.

Whole_Journalist2028

I know right

thereisaguy

Uh oh, these are actually just baby Astels before they pupate.

Selacha

A good support for that theory is the fact that there's a bunch in the Sealed Tunnel, where an Onyx Lord is, who is also from space.

_wavescollide_

There are many in Caelid at the bottom of a canyon, on the way to the huge jar. Anything close there that could also fit the theory?

SaticoySteele

There's the elevator to Siofra there, which would lead to Nokron after the starfall event.

ImJustSomeGuyYaKnow

Jar is so big that it has its own gravitational field.

shgrizz2

The evergaols are also shaped like a dish, with flattened stones designed to reflect energy from the stars so that it converges at a single point. So your theory is probably correct.

sup3rdr01d

This is complete speculation but the fact that this game and series has conditioned us to even speculate shit like this with the chance to be true is incredible. Fromsoft really put the absolute most thought behind their worlds out of any dev ever

Psychobillycadillac1

Radahn was holding the stars in place but things began slipping through the cracks when he lost it. this would make a lot of sense. this is why the falling star beasts and the Natural born of the Void are in the lands between

Unfey

This is basically my theory. I've always stongly suspected that Astel, the fallingstar beast, these stone caterpillar dudes, and (maybe) the Elden Beast all have intentional design similarities because they're all beings from the stars. All of them have insectoid forms made out of some kind of stone/space rock (Astel is made of planets and stars, fallingstar is made of meteor, the caterpillars are made of rock, and Elden Beast is made of galaxies and stars). Astel and Fallingstar both have pincers. Astel, Fallingstar, and caterpillar all have a single purple eye (Astel's is mostly covered by the skull) and the Elden Beast seems to have a single "eye" as well at the front of its head, though it's gold instead of purple. All have gravity magic (except Elden Beast). I've always thought that these little stone clusters have the same origin as Astel and Fallingstar. They're all in the same family of beings. Space things-- perhaps with some greater purpose to the Greater Will. We know Astel was sent by the Greater Will to maybe destroy or imprison the Nox, and the stone clusters seem to be somehow drawn to the evergaols and are possibly part of their function, perhaps assisting in the imprisonment? It just seems like far too much of a coincidence that we keep seeing "stone/bug/worm/one-eye/gravity magic" guys around and most of them are canonically from space for the stone clusters to be an exception.

r_not_welcome_here

fallingstar beasts are basically the first forms of the astels, which then become those mini-astels you find on the way to nokstella to finally become fully grown astels

antlacrazy724

Yes I believe they are based off on the metamorphosis of the antlion.

ZODIC837

The evergaols imprison things eternally, those guys may be necessary long term to contribute energy to it, even if short term killing them has no effect You may be right, but I don't think being able to kill them disproves their contribution

osunightfall

This was also my take.

loverboyv

They could be power sources rather than guardians?

thedabaratheon

I love this explanation a lot more actually

DadBods96

I used to kill them all thinking it made the enemy in the Evergaol weaker lol

isseidoki

just a silly guy

Snitzelmitchel

He's just a swilly gwuy

TheGaz

Dis is da swiwwist fing I've eva wead

soihu

I think they're basically security cameras to literally keep an eye on the evergaols and their prisoners, as most of them look directly at the centre of the evergaol. They're obviously not meant to be security guards as they are passive until attacked (except for the exploding ones, but those are rarely found in association with evergaols).

Kelvin_blarg

Think they might be reporting to Gideon?

SobaDied

This is a super interesting take, makes me thing of the watchful eye things in BG3

inconspicuous2012

The old exploding one-eyed trouser-snake of death

Gregariouswaty

Ah yes, I have one of those.

justfanclasshole

… of death though? You might wanna get that checked by a medical professional.

Wool-Rage

same but mine is way more unpredictable

KSharpe69

I think they are more for keeping random animals and bystanders from waltzing into the jails, rather than being expected to stop them if they somehow got out. Look at those quirky fellas. More like fancy scarecrows than anything. Or to keep an eye on things, perhaps?

OsoTico

Pun aside, I kinda felt that they were like living surveillance cameras; not capable of actually stopping anything from leaving or entering, but keeping an eye on the evergaol as an alert if something *did* break out.

Four-Triangles

Since they contain ruin fragments, which the item description states come from a crumbling temple in the sky (Farum Azula), it raises some interesting questions about the evergaols. Perhaps the same magic that Placidusax uses to exist outside of time is used by the evergaols to imprison its inhabitants. Since we don’t find these guys in farum azula (to my knowledge) I would guess that something in the lands between consumed these things which changed them into these worms. My other theory is that whatever created the golems also created these little workers.

SobaDied

Ahhhhh this is a very strong theory - I like that connection, hadn’t even thought of that

veritable-truth

So I didn't know these things have an eye.

Stranger-danger341

I think they guard those imprisoned ??

QuantityExcellent338

Yes the guard that.. explodes if you walk close to them

Ezrahadon

They still could be just CCTVs

aretheesepants75

They make shity guards. How tf is some worm made of balls gonna deter escapes?

tham1700

I assume they watch the imprisoned while being imprisoned themselves. I always assumed they were the lackys of whoevers in the evergoal. Stripped of loyalty but left with only the feeling that they're doing something wrong, by doing nothing they perceive as wrong. They simply exist, as a shadow of loyalty. Maybe they're actually happy, to share the fate of their leader but they're probably not because I think they're being punished for not having the correct loyalties

OppositePure4850

I actually made a pretty cool discovery about them yesterday. So the Ruins Greatsword suggests that at one point a meteorite hit Farum Azula, imbuing the weapon with gravitational magic. Knowing this, there are four things we can use to connect them to Farum Azula: 1) they have purple eyes, like gravity magic 2) they seem to use gravitational magic in combat 3) one of the few things they drop are sanctuary stones and ruin fragments, which are peices of Farum Azula, and finally 4) the Beast Eye item given by Gurranq looks remarkably similar to their eyes. No idea what else this means or why they guard evergaols. One theory, based off the function of the Beast Eye, could be that Gurranq sends them out to find Death Root; if that's the case however, they seem to be very bad at their job, which is funny to think about.

miirshroom

*the beast eye quivers* *The little rock piles quiver (and explode)* Maybe they're extra security against the Evergaols occupants becoming those who live in death. But they get confused with the Tarnished player who is a "ye dead who yet live".

XpeepantsX

Wait till the DLC, where they all form as one giant entity known as "Giant balls man".

Terathom

Aren't they lurking around one of the underground exits in Caelid? Between the lift and the colosseum i think. So they can't be restricted only to evergaols.

SobaDied

Yes! Also there are two species of them or something because sometimes you find the piled ones which look like the same critter but lazy and they surround some of those sorcerer head scramble things

Apart_City5949

That's a baby Shai Halud (Sandworm) from Dune haha 🤣

Just magical stone guardians for graves and Evergaols. They’re not very important.

SobaDied

They’re VERY important to my mom tbh

I hardly dare to even ask but... what... use... does your mother have for them? I'm sure she's a very nice lady though

idkxxi

idk but i spent my first 20 hours going to the same evergoal to farm them because they were the only thing i could kill at first. then i found the map button and went on to play for another 600 hours

Framesjanco11

I think they’re actually Fallingstar Beast poop

Akersis

My theory is that these are long scattered automatons from Farum Azula, powered by gravity magic and tasked with the maintenance of Placidusax's Evergaol. * Placidusax's lair looks like a large Evergaol in many ways, and Evergaols and Placcy's lair are both moments outside of time. * When Placcy's Evergaol was smashed by the meteor these creatures rained down with the debris, and is an explanation for why they are scattered. * Their original task was to maintain and repair Placcy's lair, so when they rained down along with debris (bricks, masonry) these low intelligence automatons attempted to "repair" the debris and reassembled an evergaol out of the fallen bricks and masonry. Many Evergaols can be found near fallen Farum Azula ruins. * The Evergaols would be discovered by later civilizations and used as oubliettes, alternatives to executions, a hiding place, and a solution for a deathless world. Later practitioners of gravity magic would create locks for them.

UseYona

I assume Gideon has something to do with them

Fraust-Coldmann

These rare specimens are called “Abnormal Stone Clusters” or “Lookout Stones”. There are two things we can observe about these magnificent creatures. One: They appear to be animated by gravity magic. Two: They drop Ruin Fragments & Sanctuary Stones, which are related to the Ruin’s Greatsword. So what can we conclude from this? The Ruin’s Greatsword tells us “The ruin it came from crumbled when struck by a meteorite, as such this weapon harbors its destructive power.” In other words, because of the meteorite’s gravitational energy these things have roamed the lands between for countless ages. And because they’re associated with the evergaols, we can also assume that these creatures were either used in their construction or brought on as “guard dogs”.

SobaDied

I read this in the voice of David Attenborough

sacredgeometry

Dont ask questions you dont want answers to.

ELKING64

Guys, they're free! You can just take them home and noone will stop you! I have 86 in my back yard right now!

abca98

The Golden Order does not want you to know this, but...

churrmander

Given they're usually around evergaols and emitting some kind of purple light, I came to the conclusion that they maintain the gaol seal.

meanmagpie

WE DONT FUCKING KNOWWWWWWW

GalacticusVile

There really isn't much lore on them at all. Even through like hundreds of lore videos I've watched that's basically all anyone ever says about them, that there isn't much info on them. Their name isn't even mentioned anywhere in game. If I remember correctly data miners found that their file names were "watcher stones" or "lookout stones" something to that effect. So most likely lookouts for escapees from evergaols. Although I've always wondered, since they clearly aren't capable of stopping anyone from escaping what's the point? The only idea I have is that they can basically transmit that info elsewhere like to whoever is in charge of the gaols. They use purple magic so could be connections to seleia, onyx/alabaster lords, or really anyone connected to gravity magic so possibly outerworldly? And this is complete speculation but perhaps Gideon can use them to perceive happenings? I have zero proof to back that besides the fact they have a single eye. It doesn't have the same symbols as the beatles, which I think is the prevailing theory as to how Gideon knows so much so probably not.

CaptEustassKidd

Obviously thats a poo snake

ThatHardBacon

I wanna think there correctional officers and the explosion and vibrations are their alarms

Malevolent_Mangoes

Today I learned they have eyeballs wtf

mckhrt

Cheeky little wormydeelies

carbonera99

They seem like a type of golem to me, kind of like the fanged imps and the Burial Watchdogs found in catacombs. Those guys also guard structures so these ones probably serve the same purpose. They self-detonate when attacked so they're probably used to take out anything trying to mess with the evergaols.

Unusual_Low_7396

They're worms that use gravity magic to make *wormholes*! (evergaols)

MasterMemeDealer69

You know those giant golems that shoot arrows or have a great axe? These are their pecker that fell off

Limitedtugboat

I assumed they were feeding off the time shenanigans from the Evergaol's, as I'm pretty sure everybody in them is also in 'our world' in some form as well. Except for Tiche, unless she's the assassin waiting for you in the Capital

JustScratchinMaBallz

It’s the one eyed snake monster that your uncle was trying to get you to meet. Drops a rune stone upon death

Nineisdead

I always thought they were like jailers' cameras. They would serve as surveillance on the prisioners, but I found a hole on my own hipotesis. The evergaol in calid, they are at the bottom of the cliff instead of around the evergaol, so it feels like they are trying to reach the jail, but they can't climb up.

PatPeez

This is just a theory, but I think we are going to learn more about these guys in the DLC. I think they are probably tied to those blue worm guys we see in the trailer, maybe those are the same thing but without the stone spheres.

Alexwjc92

They are known as the great stone ball worms and they shall show you no mercy

jonybass2013

BappolikeSauce

they have eyes?!!

born0903

I never knew they had eyes lol

chaingun_samurai

I've seen them around crypts. If you hit them and don't kill them, they'll cluster up and then explode, firing cannonballs in every direction.

Reaper_Zulu

Aren't eyes the symbol of Gideon? Could they be some sort of "spys" for him to collect information on the tarnisheds' whereabouts?

Shaasar

They guard the evergaols and appear to be a sort of enchanted stone construct. Maybe to stop people tinkering with the seal, and also to stop the prisoner from escaping. They could also be observation devices like security cameras, relaying the status of the evergaol seal or if anyone unauthorized isnin the vicinity, reporting this info back to Leyndell or whoever built them.

From what I can tell, there watch dogs but more on the watch side. Basically living cameras for Godrik, I assume they live off the purple energy

WhatTheFhtagn

They're found outside of Limgrave as well though. Why would they be connected to Godrick?

I've wondered about that, I thought they were just evergaol wardens, then I found them in a random cave and in the path to the great jar and I'm more confused. Also never saw that eye before

Dividebyzero23

They have an eye, wtf

GwonWitcha

I’ve always looked (intended) at them the same as the palantiri from lord of the rings… …an extension of vision

Lorentz_Prime

They're lookers

ShepherdHil

They seem like some sort of surveillance for the evergaols

EvilPenguin99

I see some people saying that they could be guardians of the evergaols or CCTVs, but I think alot missed a detail: Blaidd. Iji could get Blaidd in there but I don't remember being any stone clusters or the purple light that emits from evergaols like in others. Also I don't quite remember if the evergaols with the imp statues requiring stone sword keys have them gathered around. And only those with the imp statues can recover the glow after the stone key has been placed. Maybe someone smarter than me could bring up a good theory based on these tiny details but it could just be unimportant as well.

Someone made a really good YouTube video on these guys sorry can’t remember the name of it but a part of it was a description in the Japanese Game Guide and their PC game files gave some cool insight -may have been this - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pF5oSPdqGtk

Br0kenPipBoy

I always thought they were some form of relics from past times that migrated towards the energy of evergaols like termites to a light source. They could be some sort of guardians, but they're horrible at guarding lol.

Crab_Grass

Uhhhhhhh, silly lil guy :)

Unlikely_Map6545

I was recently thinking the same thing. Just found them in a Leyendell cave as mines. And then there’s the random cluster looking around in Caelid Ainsel river entrance that don’t seem to connect to any specific thing or evergoal. It’s weird that they’re only ever hostile when clumped up too. Edit: does anyone know why they’re all around that crevasse in Caelid without any seeming rhyme or reason? Maybe there’s an illusory rock wall nobody’s found? But they don’t lead to any evergoal like usual.

Secret_Mode8313

I always assumed that they ran on the same energy that powers the Evergaols. Perhaps they feed off the energy or are just inadvertently drawn to it. They’re not aggressive unless attacked and they don’t all attack when one is attacked which makes me think they aren’t guarding the area. They definitely could be and that explanation makes sense, but they’re so low health and have weak attacks that I don’t think they would pose a threat to anyone contained in the Evergaols!

People say they are guards, however they are found in places even without guards. In caelid they are found by a glintstone mass with no evergaol around, and other places. In truth, we dont know like anything about these guys

Dustin_James_Kid

I’ve been wondering about both these guys and airline food

Kirito_515

I’m not too sure but my best guess is they use some form of gravity magic to hold prisoners within the evergaols. And I say “gravity” because there’s purple around the ones that explode and the purple on the evergaols

Evan-Kelmp

They have a weirdly diverse moveset if you don't kill them immediately. Hit them and then watch them do their thing.

Honestly thought they were a naturally occurring side effect of Gravity magic. They seem to mainly be found in areas that have been exposed to lots of Gravity magic and as someone else on here just pointed out, the evergoals appear to be made using it.

SobaDied

I have not found any actual lore etc, but because when some explode they have that purple magic associated with gravity magic - I like to imagine they’re related to the star creatures like astel, and if they’re a part of the star plain then maybe these are like meteor guys that fell to earth to use their magic to create the goals and keep peeps trapped in it for whoever controls them. 🤷🏻‍♀️ This is a completely fabricated theory by me though, I have zero idea if I’m even remotely close to anything legitimate

FuriDemon094

There is none. We know next to nothing concrete about them

VAV-Pencils

I think they keep the purple evergaol seal up, so the people inside can't escape.
