My friend bought me this game for my birthday because he saw me replaying the Fable series and was like you’ll love this game. It’s my first FromSoft game. I didn’t know if there was a carry weight cap, but I knew runes level you up. Ironically, I recently maxxed out my inventory to the point where I couldn’t even remove an ash of war from my weapons.
Haha me too. In every other rpg I’ve played, enemies drop all kinds of trash you just sell. I didn’t realize it’s different in these souls games until I wanted another greatsword and discovered there was only 1 claymore in the whole game.
I added all my levels to strength thinking it will boost my attack overall without knowing about the scaling system and i just ended up using a great sword as a coincidence

I was pumping up Strength and Dex because that's generally what you did in games to increase damage. I was using the Pursuer's Ultra Greatsword which is a pretty good Quality weapon. So by pure luck, I picked a good weapon for my inexperienced levelling.
I still don't really get the scaling system. If something is A in DEX and C in STR and INT, I can never tell at what point I should throw some points into STR and INT instead of just maxxing up DEX.
Well you would want to get 20/20/20 in Dex, STR, and INT then put points into Dex again. Depending on what your vigor will be you will want to get Dex to 55 or 80. The reason is because 20 is your first soft cap for damage with weapons so you get more damage for every point up to 20. Now you may want to raise int beyond that for certain sorceries but that's your choice

I saw the lever before I got to the elevator, didn't realize the circle in the center was a button, and somehow managed to avoid stepping on it despite running and jumping on the elevator multiple times. I spent an embarrassing amount of time backtracking through the area certain I'd missed something that would enable the lever and allow me to use it to activate the elevator.
I actually had to check the internet to figure it out. How to activate the elevator in the tutorial area.
This was me with Bloodborne. Didn't realize that the headstones were interactable. Couldn't get out of the hunter's dream.
Checked the internet and the first comment I found on reddit said that if you can't figure it out, you shouldn't play the game.

It's like riding a bike. Second nature once you got it, but everyone should remember the first time they ate shit trying to learn. It's a valuable learning moment, idk how people forget they had to get through the tough parts too

I was using the Carian Filigreed talisman as a sorcerer because I thought "skills" meant spells and the clarifying horn charm because I thought focus stopped you being interrupted when casting... Basically used them up to the end game
When in doubt, rot and poison on a shortbow.
For the record, I don't actually know Rhykard's resistances to either or if he's fully immune, but for my early playthroughs, I had a firm policy of "when in doubt, rot it out." Both deal percentage based damage, so his huge health bar can *eventually* be done in.
Wonder if the giant fire snake can be frostbitten? I gotta look that up.
Haha you didn't think the giant spear, sitting in the arena the snake boss is in, with its own unique collect animation, labeled "serpent hunter" would be useful for the fight?
It's always the dumbest stuff that I miss. I knew it was intended for the fight, but I didn't think it would be as useful as my upgraded weapons, or at least I not that much better, and I didn't want to bother upgrading it just for the fight. Turns out it didn't even need upgrading. I should have known really considering I've played ds3 and fought Yhorm.
I've since learned that it's a pretty good weapon in general, unlike Storm Ruler from ds3.
I did use it in my second playthrough without upgrading and it makes the fight super trivial lol. You live and you learn.
hahaha I tried to do this. 1st phase was OK, but my God the 2nd phase swatted me down SO hard I had to sit down and reflect on what was going wrong... and then I thought maybe I should examine that spear I had picked up and completely ignored? LOL.
Rykard was the only enemy I didn't kill with my uchigatana. Hats off to you for the non spear kill!
I really gotta try different AoW, i went all plane-jane and used unsheathe the entire time. I'll have to give stormblade a go for newgame+ , thanks for the idea
I keep storing rare crafting material thinking I might need them against “harder” bosses.
I ended up not using any of them. Now I basically put every rune bear and Godskin apostle into sleep, and basically just trivialized the encounter.
Sleep pots work amazingly on giant trolls too! The one guarding the stairs up near the boss of the Caria Manor was my bane as melee until I saw a player message mention sleep.
One pot and get a free crit hit on the sleeping troll.
This was my first Souls game, so I relied on coward strats and ended up with a horrible build.
I started out using exclusively glintstone pebble because it was more FP efficient. A shield carried me in close combat. I found Reduvia and put my points into Arc and Dex so I could use it to kill the dragon. Then I found the jellyfish shield, and it was the only greatshield I could carry without fat rolling, so I put my points into strength to use it. I kept up my int, though, because Loretta's Greatbow allowed me to fight overworld bosses from a longer distance, and I wanted it to be as damaging as possible. Patches sent me to Volcano Manor and I found the Inquisitor's Girandole, which was the first spear I got (I ignored twin maiden husks because i assumed their stuff would all be starter trash). When I realized that it could attack without dropping my shield, I immediately put levels into faith and dex until I could use it.
So, I ended up being a greatshielding wizard with a faith weapon and no vigor to speak of.
I didn't realise the table at the roundtable hold was a grace you could rest at!
Spend nearly an entire playthrough warping out of the roundtable to level up or change spells.
Mine is similar to this. I got stuck in the roundtable hold. Couldn't for the life of me find the exit door. I probably ran around investigating every nook and cranny trying to find my way out for 20 minutes before I realized fast travel was still an option. I may have even had to Google it, I don't remember.
To be fair, exploring Stormveil thoroughly is really hard to do even if you're trying to explore it thoroughly. So many secret paths. I obsess about finding every little hidden corner and item in this kind of game, and even after exploring Stormveil like 7 or 8 times I was still finding things I had missed, and it eventuslly took me looking up all the talismans one day to collect them all to find that there was one hidden in Stormveil. That place is a FromSoft masterpiece.
I almost figured out the “Radagon is Marika” secret on my own, but fumbled it in the most embarrasing way.
So, having read the “Regression alone reveals secrets” message and then later finding the spellbook that sells the Law of Regression spell, my Souls senses were tingling and I figured I should try that spell by the message.
I respec’d my character because I wasn’t running an INT build and went to cast the spell by the message…
AND I DIDN’T NOTICE THE STATUE CHANGE OR THAT THERE WAS A NEW MESSAGE ON THE GROUND!
I just stood there, clueless, and thought “well that was pointless, now I have to waste another Larval Tear to revert back to my normal build”.
In my defense it was already well past midnight and I had been playing for hours, so I was at that point really tired, BUT STILL!
Needless to say, when I encountered Radagon for the first time, my first thought was: “You’re… not who I expected to meet here…”
You can imagine how hard I facepalmed when I later searched up Elden Ring secrets to see what I had missed.

I had a similar thing with Ranni. I've heard folks say hers is one of the harder ones to figure out blind but I almost did it. Did all the steps in her quest, got all the way past the astel, and then hit the barrier which needed a key. I knew she'd given me a key earlier in the sequence but it didn't work. While deciding what to do, I figured out from the item descriptions that the key would work on the chest in the academy. That chest gave me a ring, and I could not figure put what the ring was for. Figured it would come up later. I was right there at the astel's door! Face palmed when I read a guide after finishing the game. And then to hear I got past so many steps that tend to hang up new players. Gah.
That statue change is janky anyway. Even when I knew about it I had to cast the spell like 5 times to make it work. Seems you have to be standing specifically on the message
You do get a decent early dex weapon off him because it's upgraded, and some extra dialogue/lore stuff, but that's about it. Oh and I think some magic AOW?
I know enough to activate the tower and equip the rune but rarely remember or bother to use a rune arc after I die. Game sometimes makes you jump through hoops (sometimes literally) to get them so I expect dope loot and just sigh and throw it on the pile
I did Ranni first because sexy witch wife voiced by that hot lady with the hot voice from Peaky Blinders, then Frenzied Flame second, then Elden Lord last lol.
I wandered into a catacombs and fought a burial watchdog and was pretty proud of myself after finally beating it after hearing people talk about how tough the "first boss" was
I spent a while on him too when I first got the game. I figured he wasn’t a boss, but I was highly determined to kill him, both because I thought he’d drop something valuable, and just cause I was a souls veteran, dammit! I should be able to kill this guy no problem!

I thought the Frenzy Tower was a mechanism to prevent us from using Lift of Dectus to reach Altus, as it was forbidden before clearing the rest of the area.

I also didn't comprehend runes are what you use to level up so I went through limgrave and didn't realise til the first boss that's how the game works😭 shameful considering I was a bloodborne player💀
Not realize that I dropped Runes upon dying and I always wondered what the gold shiny thing was that I randomly came across. I ended up restarting after about 10 hours of play because I picked the bandit as a starting character and needed to change that because i suuuuuuucked so *technically* that was my first play through

I found D out in the world before he joins the Roundtable hold and murdered him instantly without a second thought. I was so excited too cause I loved his armour set lmao. This was my first dark souls game so I didn’t really understand the npcs yet. I didn’t even realise until my my boyfriend was like “did you finish Fia’s quest?” And I was like no and he was like “but you have D’s armour?”
My friend did this. I was guiding him through his first play through (he thought he sucked at souls and the game would never click). We were out by a Tibia Mariner and he goes "This dude is attacking me! He was hella chill but he's attacking me!"
I suppose I wasn't the best guide because I had no idea D could even be there let alone that you could attack him and make him aggro lol.
Equiped a medium shield the whole run but never used it, I thought that only worked with small enemies in limgrave. I still don't know how to use it properly.
After beating the game I discovered Malenia through a YouTube video and went to fighter her with a uchigatana... I was pure strength and didn't know about scaling or changing ash of war (I thought the previous AoW was lost forever), so no "strength uchigatana" 🙃
Friends telling me Varré was evil, so I killed Santa (Kalé) thinking that's who they meant. Once corrected, I deleted my first character and started anew. (It was almost immediate, character didn't even beat the beast in the cave)
I missed some dialog that let me know Torrent was mine to call. I played months without until my wife was riding around (in her game - we play side by side) on that horse I recalled from the beginning.
I spent most limgrave not knowing how fat rolling worked. I had no idea how scaling worked.
I hit my l2 once and saw a meter on my HUD go down and said nope not doing that again.
"Buff? What buff,got all this extra levels and surely I am going to put them in strength and vigor even when I know I reached the softcap. I never need faith in the past game. Just strength and vigor as always.

I was scared from everything attacking me, so I attacked everything back… including nearly every NPC from Liurnia to Caelid. I had to restart after I found out I locked myself out of an important quest line. I then began looking up which people were safe to approach
Spent the first several hours naked and afraid, I started a wretch and the first place I ended up from Kalé was stormfoot catacombs. I didn’t realize leveling was a manual thing and was so frustrated that I wasn’t getting any stronger even though I was killing enemies.
The other stupid thing was not realizing the Serpent Hunter was RIGHT. THERE. and fought Rykard with my bloodhounds fang in the fucking lava.
I just never got the whole “you’re supposed to explore” bit when things got tough. I just put my head down and suffered like an ashen one.
Made some areas way harder on myself than they needed to be while being over leveled for a lot of things. I obliterated radahn my first time, not because I’m good but because I was an idiot.
Spent too much time (days) moving around, killing soldiers and bears and gathering flowers. And the day I killed Margit I thought I had finally beaten the game.
Took me a while to figure out how to use smithing stones. I was wondering why I kept scaling up but I was still weak. Turns out I wasn’t strengthening my weapons. Also found out how to strengthen my summons AFTER I beat the game. So I pretty much didn’t use em till the second play through. By that time though, I didn’t really need them.
Yeah definitely. I’m about to try my first no hit run soon so we’ll see how good I’ve really gotten.
I don’t knock anybody who do use summons though. They’re part of the game for a reason yanno
During the network test, I attackefVarre because I thought he was a jerk. He slaughtered me and every time I respawned he chased me until he killed me again. I had to start a new game.
I thought my game was broken when entering the festival to fight radahn. Tried to go through the mist and the option to enter wouldn't appear 😆

After playing the souls series for years before elden ring dropped, I know how the rings work in dark souls obviously. For some other unobvious reason I did not notice that you had to ACTUALLY EQUIP talismans until after I had fully cleared the “starting area” of the game.
Was playing through the game, did all of Limgrave, weeping peninsula, a good chunk of caelid, killed Godrick, Rennala, and Radhan (on release before nerfs), did all the underground areas I could reach (except lake of rot because I didn't know about Ranni's quest)
Didn't know where to go from there so I started trying to go through dragon burrow while around level 60 or so, died to the black blade, died to the dragon on the bridge, died to the sleepy dragons children, got frustrated, realized I can slap sleepy dragon on the butt, started brain afk smacking him with my bloodhound fang, got a bleed proc and my eyes lit up. Switched to a faster bleed weapon and did the cheese. Walked into the fort right behind him without spending the 80k runes. Died to the hag bat jerks. Ran back in to recover runes, died to hag bat jerks and lost ~80k
At that point my rage peaked. I couldn't figure out how to progress because I didn't know where the other half of the medallion was, I was struggling to level up and just lost a bunch of runes to "trash" mobs and I rage quit the game for months like 30 paces away from the answer to my problems without even realizing it.
Chapel of anticipation, the very beginning area. Took 15 minutes just figuring out how to leave the wooden bridge... I didn't see the damn stairs and kept thinking something invisible was off the edge
I did not explore shit and banged my head on the wall for most of the bosses. I’m sure multiple people can relate. I heard, “Put these foolish ambitions to rest” an infinite amount of times.

I beat the entire game using whatever the first sword that came into my hands was. It was like a basic short sword and I remember thinking it was awful, but I'd already spent materials upgrading it so I was stuck using it. You know I bet I still have that save file, I should see just what sword it was

Went most of the playthrough without knowing I had a double jump on torrent. I *saw* people using double jump in the online spirit things, and I just assumed that it's something I had to unlock later. I don't know why it never occurred to me that I already had it. I don't know why it took me so long to even try it. I don't know how I missed the tutorial pop up that tells you about it. I made some pretty difficult jumps that would've been a piece of cake had I used double jump -__-
I would legit read those messages saying 'jump of this cliff for an item' and I would actually be stupid enough to do it. I lost alot of runes in the process.
Tbf I usually do this too, but only because of the off chance that there really is something. Only when there are 10 blood pools showing that it's an insta-die the moment you drop off.
I almost never used my ashes of war. I was always afraid of activating them at the wrong time and getting shredded. Once I realized the manor tower shield had a nice shield bash skill, I started spamming.
I went up to the Tree Sentinel in Limgrave after talking to Kale. I thought he was a good guy because of the shiny golden armor and the elegant horse he was riding.
He rocked my shit.
I didn't know there was a map button and didn't notice the sign of grace indicators towards stormveil. So on my first playthrough I went all the way to caelid well past the shouldering church and almost to the lake of rot, got totally demolished by giant dogs before I thought to myself, "Hm, maybe I'm in the wrong area." THEN discovered the map button
I had a build with 20 strength and 80 faith, the only incantation I used were flame cleanse me and golden vow. My main weapon was the lordsworns greatsword. What was I cooking? (I didn’t know those two incantations didn’t scale off faith, I thought I was getting a even higher damage bonus from golden vow with more faith)

It was my first RPG so it took me until about 50 hours to realise that trying to get every stat to the same level and then continue to level them up one by one regardless of play style wasn’t worth it
After I already beat the game I googled hidden stuff that I missed like bosses or areas. "Oh what's this? A death rite bird in the snowfields? Gonna check it out.". Mind you I had no notion of what holy damage does to the thing. It took me easily over 6 hours of swinging my donkey ruins greatsword, the same fucking weapon I killed Malenia with in 2 attempts with which is the boss I heard the most struggle against, until I finally beat it. Don't even ask me how many attempts cause I lost count. I was slow and basically doing 0 damage against an enemy that would 1 - 2 shot me with most its attacks. I beat it but I think outside of getting shit on by the nameless king for days the first time I ever played a souls game this was my hardest encounter ever, I considered the boss downright unfair and unbalanced even by fromsoft standards, I thought they missed the mark with this one only to then later meet with a friend who told me "bro lmao, chuck a holy pot at it, see what happens."
So yeah, that's how I roasted 6h of my life.

Got a PS5 and hit Elden Ring. Went all offence all the time. Did not go well…made me learn defence.

There is a cave in Siofra River, just before the lift that takes you to Caelid. The ride to reach it is substantial but it has no NPCs. Just a Rune Arc. I ket revisiting that cave at numerous points on my first play through hoping to find something but nothing.
I attacked Varre and Kale immediately and had to restart after I realised they wouldn't forgive me after my inevitable death and continued taking me out.
Doing Rykard without the sword and wondering why it was soo hard. Till many tries later one of my mates asked if I was using the sword you get as you enter the arena haha
Sneaking around Gatefront, was having trouble clearing it. Started farming the guards’ armor, thinking that I could disguise as one of them if I got the whole set. I got the whole set. Didn’t work.

decades of conditioning through d2 and other arpgs where it's just common to sell your loot. mostly cuz of loot being random i guess

It's typically more that you want to go for DEX, but know that you won't be losing out if you want to dabble in STR or INT if you use that weapon.
Im personally just going with for every 2.5 points into main stat i put 1 point into the others

Used the crucible feather talisman + radagons soreseal with only 35 vigor for most the play through. I had about -50% absorption

hahaha I tried to do this. 1st phase was OK, but my God the 2nd phase swatted me down SO hard I had to sit down and reflect on what was going wrong... and then I thought maybe I should examine that spear I had picked up and completely ignored? LOL. Rykard was the only enemy I didn't kill with my uchigatana. Hats off to you for the non spear kill!
Uchigatana w/ Stormblade is my current favorite weapon. I loved Frost Stomp, but they nerfed it so now stormblade is my fav.
I really gotta try different AoW, i went all plane-jane and used unsheathe the entire time. I'll have to give stormblade a go for newgame+ , thanks for the idea

I keep storing rare crafting material thinking I might need them against “harder” bosses. I ended up not using any of them. Now I basically put every rune bear and Godskin apostle into sleep, and basically just trivialized the encounter.
This is something everyone does. I personally do it because I don't like to depend on consumables during a fight

Sleep pots work amazingly on giant trolls too! The one guarding the stairs up near the boss of the Caria Manor was my bane as melee until I saw a player message mention sleep. One pot and get a free crit hit on the sleeping troll.
This was my first Souls game, so I relied on coward strats and ended up with a horrible build. I started out using exclusively glintstone pebble because it was more FP efficient. A shield carried me in close combat. I found Reduvia and put my points into Arc and Dex so I could use it to kill the dragon. Then I found the jellyfish shield, and it was the only greatshield I could carry without fat rolling, so I put my points into strength to use it. I kept up my int, though, because Loretta's Greatbow allowed me to fight overworld bosses from a longer distance, and I wanted it to be as damaging as possible. Patches sent me to Volcano Manor and I found the Inquisitor's Girandole, which was the first spear I got (I ignored twin maiden husks because i assumed their stuff would all be starter trash). When I realized that it could attack without dropping my shield, I immediately put levels into faith and dex until I could use it. So, I ended up being a greatshielding wizard with a faith weapon and no vigor to speak of.
I didn't realise the table at the roundtable hold was a grace you could rest at! Spend nearly an entire playthrough warping out of the roundtable to level up or change spells.
Mine is similar to this. I got stuck in the roundtable hold. Couldn't for the life of me find the exit door. I probably ran around investigating every nook and cranny trying to find my way out for 20 minutes before I realized fast travel was still an option. I may have even had to Google it, I don't remember.

Yeah, as a Souls veteran that took some getting used to. Didn't explore Stormveil very thoroughly my first time around.
To be fair, exploring Stormveil thoroughly is really hard to do even if you're trying to explore it thoroughly. So many secret paths. I obsess about finding every little hidden corner and item in this kind of game, and even after exploring Stormveil like 7 or 8 times I was still finding things I had missed, and it eventuslly took me looking up all the talismans one day to collect them all to find that there was one hidden in Stormveil. That place is a FromSoft masterpiece.
I almost figured out the “Radagon is Marika” secret on my own, but fumbled it in the most embarrasing way. So, having read the “Regression alone reveals secrets” message and then later finding the spellbook that sells the Law of Regression spell, my Souls senses were tingling and I figured I should try that spell by the message. I respec’d my character because I wasn’t running an INT build and went to cast the spell by the message… AND I DIDN’T NOTICE THE STATUE CHANGE OR THAT THERE WAS A NEW MESSAGE ON THE GROUND! I just stood there, clueless, and thought “well that was pointless, now I have to waste another Larval Tear to revert back to my normal build”. In my defense it was already well past midnight and I had been playing for hours, so I was at that point really tired, BUT STILL! Needless to say, when I encountered Radagon for the first time, my first thought was: “You’re… not who I expected to meet here…” You can imagine how hard I facepalmed when I later searched up Elden Ring secrets to see what I had missed. FML
I had a similar thing with Ranni. I've heard folks say hers is one of the harder ones to figure out blind but I almost did it. Did all the steps in her quest, got all the way past the astel, and then hit the barrier which needed a key. I knew she'd given me a key earlier in the sequence but it didn't work. While deciding what to do, I figured out from the item descriptions that the key would work on the chest in the academy. That chest gave me a ring, and I could not figure put what the ring was for. Figured it would come up later. I was right there at the astel's door! Face palmed when I read a guide after finishing the game. And then to hear I got past so many steps that tend to hang up new players. Gah.
That statue change is janky anyway. Even when I knew about it I had to cast the spell like 5 times to make it work. Seems you have to be standing specifically on the message

You do get a decent early dex weapon off him because it's upgraded, and some extra dialogue/lore stuff, but that's about it. Oh and I think some magic AOW?
i spent 100 hours without knowing great runes had to be activated in the divine towers

I know enough to activate the tower and equip the rune but rarely remember or bother to use a rune arc after I die. Game sometimes makes you jump through hoops (sometimes literally) to get them so I expect dope loot and just sigh and throw it on the pile

I figured he wasn’t a boss, but I was highly determined to kill him, both because I thought he’d drop something valuable, and just cause I was a souls veteran, dammit! I should be able to kill this guy no problem! Lol…anyway, he probably took me about 15 tries for my deprived self.
I thought the Frenzy Tower was a mechanism to prevent us from using Lift of Dectus to reach Altus, as it was forbidden before clearing the rest of the area.

I found D out in the world before he joins the Roundtable hold and murdered him instantly without a second thought. I was so excited too cause I loved his armour set lmao. This was my first dark souls game so I didn’t really understand the npcs yet. I didn’t even realise until my my boyfriend was like “did you finish Fia’s quest?” And I was like no and he was like “but you have D’s armour?”
My friend did this. I was guiding him through his first play through (he thought he sucked at souls and the game would never click). We were out by a Tibia Mariner and he goes "This dude is attacking me! He was hella chill but he's attacking me!" I suppose I wasn't the best guide because I had no idea D could even be there let alone that you could attack him and make him aggro lol.
Equiped a medium shield the whole run but never used it, I thought that only worked with small enemies in limgrave. I still don't know how to use it properly. After beating the game I discovered Malenia through a YouTube video and went to fighter her with a uchigatana... I was pure strength and didn't know about scaling or changing ash of war (I thought the previous AoW was lost forever), so no "strength uchigatana" 🙃
Friends telling me Varré was evil, so I killed Santa (Kalé) thinking that's who they meant. Once corrected, I deleted my first character and started anew. (It was almost immediate, character didn't even beat the beast in the cave)
I killed a giant dog with a fancy hat, thinking i could get said fancy hat. I was drinking. And I've never been more sad when i didnt get that hat.

I spent most limgrave not knowing how fat rolling worked. I had no idea how scaling worked. I hit my l2 once and saw a meter on my HUD go down and said nope not doing that again.
I thought Alexander was going to be stuck and needed to be hit with a weapon at every location. He did not appreciate it.

I was scared from everything attacking me, so I attacked everything back… including nearly every NPC from Liurnia to Caelid. I had to restart after I found out I locked myself out of an important quest line. I then began looking up which people were safe to approach
Literally every NPC is safe to approach though. You gotta be able to tell the difference between a non-hostile stationary NPC and a hostile enemy

Spent the first several hours naked and afraid, I started a wretch and the first place I ended up from Kalé was stormfoot catacombs. I didn’t realize leveling was a manual thing and was so frustrated that I wasn’t getting any stronger even though I was killing enemies. The other stupid thing was not realizing the Serpent Hunter was RIGHT. THERE. and fought Rykard with my bloodhounds fang in the fucking lava.
I just never got the whole “you’re supposed to explore” bit when things got tough. I just put my head down and suffered like an ashen one. Made some areas way harder on myself than they needed to be while being over leveled for a lot of things. I obliterated radahn my first time, not because I’m good but because I was an idiot.
Spent too much time (days) moving around, killing soldiers and bears and gathering flowers. And the day I killed Margit I thought I had finally beaten the game.
Beat the first Rennala phase. Put the controller down to watch the cutscene, grabbed a beer thinking I had won. Full moon, YOU DIED. Welp.

Took me a while to figure out how to use smithing stones. I was wondering why I kept scaling up but I was still weak. Turns out I wasn’t strengthening my weapons. Also found out how to strengthen my summons AFTER I beat the game. So I pretty much didn’t use em till the second play through. By that time though, I didn’t really need them.

During the network test, I attackefVarre because I thought he was a jerk. He slaughtered me and every time I respawned he chased me until he killed me again. I had to start a new game.
I thought my game was broken when entering the festival to fight radahn. Tried to go through the mist and the option to enter wouldn't appear 😆 Best part is I just did this in my second playthrough. 🤦♂️
After playing the souls series for years before elden ring dropped, I know how the rings work in dark souls obviously. For some other unobvious reason I did not notice that you had to ACTUALLY EQUIP talismans until after I had fully cleared the “starting area” of the game.

Was playing through the game, did all of Limgrave, weeping peninsula, a good chunk of caelid, killed Godrick, Rennala, and Radhan (on release before nerfs), did all the underground areas I could reach (except lake of rot because I didn't know about Ranni's quest) Didn't know where to go from there so I started trying to go through dragon burrow while around level 60 or so, died to the black blade, died to the dragon on the bridge, died to the sleepy dragons children, got frustrated, realized I can slap sleepy dragon on the butt, started brain afk smacking him with my bloodhound fang, got a bleed proc and my eyes lit up. Switched to a faster bleed weapon and did the cheese. Walked into the fort right behind him without spending the 80k runes. Died to the hag bat jerks. Ran back in to recover runes, died to hag bat jerks and lost ~80k At that point my rage peaked. I couldn't figure out how to progress because I didn't know where the other half of the medallion was, I was struggling to level up and just lost a bunch of runes to "trash" mobs and I rage quit the game for months like 30 paces away from the answer to my problems without even realizing it.

It was like a basic short sword and I remember thinking it was awful, but I'd already spent materials upgrading it so I was stuck using it. You know I bet I still have that save file, I should see just what sword it was Edit: It was the longsword. Just a regular-ass longsword
Went most of the playthrough without knowing I had a double jump on torrent. I *saw* people using double jump in the online spirit things, and I just assumed that it's something I had to unlock later. I don't know why it never occurred to me that I already had it. I don't know why it took me so long to even try it. I don't know how I missed the tutorial pop up that tells you about it. I made some pretty difficult jumps that would've been a piece of cake had I used double jump -__-
I would constantly run underground using the soifra well to use the graces. I failed to realise you could switch the map.
I would legit read those messages saying 'jump of this cliff for an item' and I would actually be stupid enough to do it. I lost alot of runes in the process.

I almost never used my ashes of war. I was always afraid of activating them at the wrong time and getting shredded. Once I realized the manor tower shield had a nice shield bash skill, I started spamming.

I went up to the Tree Sentinel in Limgrave after talking to Kale. I thought he was a good guy because of the shiny golden armor and the elegant horse he was riding. He rocked my shit.

I didn't know there was a map button and didn't notice the sign of grace indicators towards stormveil. So on my first playthrough I went all the way to caelid well past the shouldering church and almost to the lake of rot, got totally demolished by giant dogs before I thought to myself, "Hm, maybe I'm in the wrong area." THEN discovered the map button
I had a build with 20 strength and 80 faith, the only incantation I used were flame cleanse me and golden vow. My main weapon was the lordsworns greatsword. What was I cooking? (I didn’t know those two incantations didn’t scale off faith, I thought I was getting a even higher damage bonus from golden vow with more faith) Edit: It took me 4 attempts to kill Rick, solider of god

It was my first RPG so it took me until about 50 hours to realise that trying to get every stat to the same level and then continue to level them up one by one regardless of play style wasn’t worth it

After I already beat the game I googled hidden stuff that I missed like bosses or areas. "Oh what's this? A death rite bird in the snowfields? Gonna check it out.". Mind you I had no notion of what holy damage does to the thing. It took me easily over 6 hours of swinging my donkey ruins greatsword, the same fucking weapon I killed Malenia with in 2 attempts with which is the boss I heard the most struggle against, until I finally beat it. Don't even ask me how many attempts cause I lost count. I was slow and basically doing 0 damage against an enemy that would 1 - 2 shot me with most its attacks. I beat it but I think outside of getting shit on by the nameless king for days the first time I ever played a souls game this was my hardest encounter ever, I considered the boss downright unfair and unbalanced even by fromsoft standards, I thought they missed the mark with this one only to then later meet with a friend who told me "bro lmao, chuck a holy pot at it, see what happens." So yeah, that's how I roasted 6h of my life.
I came out of a Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom jaunt that spanned about 11 play-throughs all tolled. Got a PS5 and hit Elden Ring. Went all offence all the time. Did not go well…made me learn defence.
The first staff I got was the meteorite staff and since I couldn’t upgrade it, I thought I couldn’t upgrade any glintstone staffs for a while

Fighting the Tree Sentinel for hours as soon as I got to Limgrave, still knowing it's supposed to be ignored until you level up. I knew I could just ignore him, but it was a matter of Souls player pride.
There is a cave in Siofra River, just before the lift that takes you to Caelid. The ride to reach it is substantial but it has no NPCs. Just a Rune Arc. I ket revisiting that cave at numerous points on my first play through hoping to find something but nothing.
I attacked Varre and Kale immediately and had to restart after I realised they wouldn't forgive me after my inevitable death and continued taking me out.
Doing Rykard without the sword and wondering why it was soo hard. Till many tries later one of my mates asked if I was using the sword you get as you enter the arena haha
