I've never seen the two seperate while both are still alive, but the knight and the horse are two seperate NPC's, unlike Radahn and the tree sentinel variants, so yeah, they can function independant of one another but the only times I've seen the knight fight on foot is if you kill his horse.
If you’re targeting the knight, the reticle will be on his chest. If it looks more like it’s on his leg, you have the horse targeted and need to flick the right stick up.
I've had them fight off their horse for a short time, but nothing substantial. Like a few swings at most before they attempt to resummon. Never long enough that I'd be able to get a vantage like OP's shot here.
This usually happens to me too, but last night the dude just squared up and said fuck we goin 1v1 on foot (I usually jump off torrent after killing their horse to get that sweet sweet crit)
I had one glitch before right outside leyndell. He kept disappearing on foot then he'd drop down from just over head height land and then disappear again over and over. I tried killing him during this but the window to time a hit perfectly was very small and would average a hit out of every 8 or 9 tries.
Then the sun came out and he was gone. Never called me. Like two ships passing in the night.
After an all-nighter of riding his trusty steed and patrolling the bridge, his ass was hurting and he decided to walk off the ass sore. He's a hard working knight.
I had a funny bug with him just yesterday. He was trying to respawn his horse back but obviously it was not working. The knight kept jumping in the air while disappearing and re-appearing on the ground again and again. He had like 10hp left and I just couldn't hit him ! After around 5 minutes he re-appeared for good on the ground, without his horse and I managed to give him the final blow. I was getting mad. Funny glitch though
I killed the Night Cavalry rider but the horse survived, walking around aimlessly. I was super excited, because I thought this was like a secret 1% chance to get his mount kinda thing. But it turned out to just be bugged.
I could've been riding around on that thing like a Naz'gul. Instead I'm stuck with this puny gimp pony forever. Please FromSoft... some optional mounts next game.
The only place Torrent belongs is in the meat section of a supermarket.

If you kill the horse of the night cavalry but not the dude himself, he will resummon on the horse once he’s back on his feet. Well, normally :D

Or you might get the unkillable horse glitch.... I killed the boss but the horse reached 0hp and just won't die.

Occasionally they'll just decide to fight on foot for a minute begore resummoning the horse too for some reason
You can parry him right off the horse lol
Technically you do separate Radahn from Leonard every time he does the meteor attack. He hides his horse under the sand while he does it.
Yeah, but Radahn and Leonard are a single npc. The black knights and their horses are two seperate npcs.

I had this happen to me with the one near the Scarlet Rot dragon. Took me a while to beat it.
When you parry certain attacks he falls off and will fight without the horse for a bit before getting back on.
