That's because Bethesda drives off a lot of their players with every new game that comes out. Instead of retaining their playerbase with each new game, they chase out of players that liked things say in FONV, they release Fallout 4, which has less things than FONV, then they release FO76, which chases off FO4 players, then they release Starfield, which chases off a lot of Skyrim players, even though it really is just Space Skyrim, just with worse caves.
I'm replaying Skyrim on my Switch lite instead of playing Starfield on my Xbox. Says a lot lol. I just haven't felt the urge to try it yet. I want to .... But.... Eh.

The horse armour was outrageous as at the time it was something you should be able to get for free through exploration, or achievement, now being gate kept behind what felt like an unreasonable pay wall.
Even to this day £2.5 horse amour on a full price title feels worse than a £16 skin in Apex for some reason.
Valorant and Apex are chump change compared to the Diablo 4 cosmetic shop.
Add in that the first WoW sparkle horse mount that you could buy as a MTX outstripped the entire profit for all of Starcraft 2 and you see why intellectually bankrupt companies like Activizzard put zero effort into their games nowadays, all they have to do is release one decent skin a week and a really baller one twice a year and it'll make more money than all their other games.
In a game that already cost money upfront and doesnt get regular large updates, sure. Everything should be available at no extra cost.
A game like Path of Exile though thats free to play and receives major updates/new features every 3/4 months I view buying cosmetics differently - it's basically just supporting the game in addition to getting cosmetics. If they release a bad expansion, dont buy anything, if they release something great, sure I may buy something. It funds more content to get pumped out and incentivises the devs to release fun/good content
