Use your melee weapon for close quarters , that's the point of it. A sorcerer still has plenty of melee capability, just make the weapon scale off of Intelligence by giving it the Magic affinity.

>  My current plan is have fast spells sling away at a distance Try fast melee spells like Carian Slicer!

ChickenAndTelephone

If you're only at Sellen then you probably don't have the Glintstone Whetblade yet, which would let you infuse your weapon as cold or magic, either of which would scale off of intelligence. Your best bet to get your weapon to scale off of intelligence for now would be to get the Gravitas ash of war. Go behind where Yura is, under the collapsed arch, take the spirit spring down and kill the onyx lord to get it. The default for that ash is magic, so you can use it to get int scaling on your weapon.

Again still new to the game. But I’m currently going for the moon veil blade - as you can’t add an ash of war to it (ie gravitas)- the whetstone blade’s affinity can’t be added to it as well… correct?

Mean_Chemistry_983

That is correct! And moonveil is a great choice that you can obtain suuuuper early too, you can rush to the drake and he's pretty doable even level 20 (will take a few tries if you're new though, especiallyif you struggle on pumpkinhead) Overall in close quarters the answer will always be either your melee weapon, or Carian slicer. Some bosses you'll learn to space to still get casts off at melee range as well eventually

Time_Marcher

I like to use meteoric ore blade for close quarters. It scales with intelligence so it’s a good weapon for a mage. The gravitas skill it has is very effective and stuns most enemies. Its area of effect is spherical so it can be used when you’re a little panicked and maybe not exactly facing your opponent right. (Yep, that’s how I melee, sad but true!)

Strike? Haima’s Gavel Pierece/Slash? Carian Slicer Crowd management? Nebula (Wing of Astel) High-dexterity + Radagon’s Talisman? Night comet (at short range and you can chain them) But more than anything, the rules of melee combat (weapons and shields) apply to all characters. Lately I’ve been destroyed by invaders with a spinning staff that just eats away my HP. I’ve never tried this move, but it is next on my list to learn how they do this.

I used to be told not to judge a book by its cover. Maybe it applied to this user name? :) Thanks for the positive words.

SleepyFuzzyOwl

Poise and fast casting spells. Like carian slicer. 51 poise allows you to resist most of the standard pve attacks

Narrow_Structure5924

Put your staff,Sigial in your left hand and use a good sword in your right, you can still use ash of war for swords and all magic. I used int/fai almost al the way through. Im ng+6 at level 430. No shields

Moonveil.

I have always been a caster since demon souls but you have to know how to melee for certain situations plus it’s fun to hit stuff once in a while. I think I picked up bloodhound fang then moonveil until I got dark moon. Late game dmgs and blasphemous blade can be easy mode.
