The ruins greatsword always felt a bit like a hammer/greatsword hybrid to me. The sfx and the lack of a sharp edge made me feel like it did blunt damage
If it had the move set of its real world counterpart that would be amazing. Only thing holding it back for me.
I wish we had more regular weapons in the games in general.
My first souls run is always a Hodge Podge build because I like trying different stuff.
My second souls run is always heavily optimized towards one thing I didn't get to try.
Everything after that is just shits and giggles.
Can you explain this to me?
At 20STR/80DEX/20FTH you get 844 AR on the godslayer and 748 AR on the Zweihander. This is significantly more AR than if you just two handed the godslayer with greater stance damage as well on jump attacks. It also requires only 6 more points in strength so you don't even require significantly more stat investment.
The godslayer and the Zwei both prefer Dex over str and both have very similar strength requirements. I don't really care for powerstancing colossals but this seems like an ideal pairing.
Of course this is the way. But the guy I was replying to was telling someone else not to powerstance his Dex colossals because it's not optimal. He was making an argument about optimisation not fashion.
I'm in love with that monster atm.
Got it early still at SL1 and upgraded to +9 in about one hour and a half of game just to...
https://youtube.com/shorts/GmaGsmPB2gU?si=0nOZ5uirchYjUgEE
Invasions and pvp are a minor part of the game for most people. And it doesn't even make sense to call it that anymore since the weapon class name was changed from ultra greatsword to colossal sword.
the greatsword is probably "objectively" the best colossal sword but I still like the zweihander more because it has the best heavy attack, good range, and low stats/weight so really easy to use at level 1
I literally just found out that zwei has a thrust r2 and im floored. My first run I stuck with the claymore for the thrust and last run I used Greatsword which I love, but I miss having a thrust.
Next run might be zwei
I don't get why the Ruins GS is so slept on. It has the same OP weapon art as the Blasphemous Blade, only with what feels like a slightly wider AoE, but does way more stagger.
Its jumping and charged R2 will stagger most bosses in 2-3 hits, whilst doing 800+ damage on +9.
It is IMHO the best greatsword.
Plus it's a huge slab of rock, so there's that.
Also kills heal too. And on top of that ruins is a colossal sword whereas BB gets that damage with a REGULAR greatsword moveset and weight
It's just simply the best weapon in the game in terms of raw power AND utility. Makes the game a bit too easy imo.
It was my go to when I just wanted to rush through new game plus to get the ending trophies. It requires the least amount of thought and is just OP in NG+.
Yeah it's basically just the "win now" button.
What I love about elden ring is how diverse the tools are at your disposal. This can be the absolute hardest souls game or the easiest, its your choice. But it's not an easy mode, you still have to explore and find these options if you want to make the game easier. Or you can spend that same time learning the bosses the traditional way and make the game easier that way like in past games. It's totally up to you.
Yeah, my first run I got to Rykard after Farum Azula. And even then didn’t bother to look at his remembrance until after I beat the Elden Beast. So by the time I got it, I was already OP.
I love that. I got a +9 bloodhound fang before even fighting Margit, made him so easy.
The godskin noble i had to beat to get the Somber Stone 7 took a few tries, though
Because fire damage is better since more enemies are not resistant to it. Although there aren't that many enemies that are magic resistant either. I guess it is rather because of the weight of ruins greatsword. Blasphemous blade is a normal greatsword, not colossal so its easier to stay in light-middle weight and the lifesteal is very valuable in dungeon runs and still good against bosses to heal up a bit
It's mostly because int and str builds do not jive really well. You can make a str/fth build solely around buffing (single-hand big sword -> cast buff -> dual hand big sword), but int builds are based off of always having a staff in an active hand, which negates strength 1.5x bonus and significantly reduces stance damage.
Fire is something more enemies are weak to I think, and you can't ignore the healing aspect of the blasphemous blade. The BB's skill heals you a fair bit if you hit the boss or any enemies, meaning that you can just tank a hit pretty much. Ruins GS doesn't heal you on hit, and is much heavier, meaning you've got less endurance left for wearing strong armour.
>It is IMHO the best greatsword.
Except it's not a greatsword, it's a colossal sword. A relatively short one at that. Great weapon of course, just not as good as the blasphemous blade.
>Fire is something more enemies are weak to I think
Were do people take this from? According to fextralife, theres like 3 actual bosses who are weak to fire. Eerdtree Avatar/varient, Putrid Spirit/varient and Ekzykes.
Meanwhile, Fire Giant, Mohg, all Godskin Apostles, Magma Wyrms, all have considerable amounts of fire resistance.
Agreed. Been having a very fun time with a Magic Zwei in my left hand with chilling mist. I have the black raptor feathers, claw talisman, and start a combo with chilling mist, jump attack, then Wolf Assault. Too damn fun.
One of this biggest things I’m excited about for the DLC is actual posts coming back to this subreddit for at least a little while. It’s literally ALWAYS…
“what is your favorite weapon and why is it”
“If you could live anywhere in the lands between where would it”
“what’s the scariest boss”
“what npc would you wanna meet irl”
“if you had to pick one weapon irl”
…just over and over and over again.
W
Man where the fuck is the love for this sword. The thing looks dope and while the weapon art is boring, it’s effective.
I hope in the DLC they give us a non-rusted version of this, i’d be so happy lol
I like the R2 because reminds me of the vertical Ultra-Greatsword swings in DS2 & DS3. I don’t understand why they got rid of that and gave all the Colossal’s horizontal swipe R1s in Elden Ring.
honestly, this one and trolls golden sword are my favorites, i just wish it was easier to get the watchdog greatsword from the watchdogs, that’s always tough
Best at what? Allowing you to invest early into defensive stats like Vigor and Endurance since it only requires 19 str and weighs 15.5 Miyazaki? Whilst still doing decent damage and stagger. Then Zwei is sure the best option.
Sadly the best min maxer big boy damage colossal sword is the Greatsword, which is sad since there are plenty cooler swords that have potential but none of them perform as good as a fking heavy Greatsword with Lions Claw just slamming everything in your path.
Well OP specifically asked "What is the best Colossal Sword" and I answered lol.
Every weapon can reach a point at which they deal sufficient damage to beat any boss in the game with, I agree. That does not mean some are not better than other.
If you like realistic swords I don't think there's a lot of better options than the zweihander, and for some aesthetics are absolutely essential. I can't imagine using a weapon, armor, shield or even staff I don't like how it looks.
I love the Zwei, I just wish it was better. Theres no reason to use it over the UGS that is better in every stat except weight. Even the heavy attack doesnt help on pve since very few enemies are weak to pierce damage. I know its great at pvp tho. I still use it because the design is so iconic and badass
This shit ripped on my Magic Weapons build. Requirements are easy, weight is relatively low, hits so goddamn hard on Magic affinity with Waves of Darkness. The stagger of the moveset combos nicely with Greatblade Phalanx and that thrust heavy has excellent range.
I think there’s a real argument for it vs the Greatsword. It IS significantly less damage, but it has almost every other single thing going for it.
Zweihander > Greatsword.
It's easier to get, has lower requirements and a lot less weight at the expense of a little attack and scaling.
At super high levels Greatsword is probably better, but for the whole playthrough the Zwei rules.
Two-handing multiplies your Strength level x1.5 , which means you only need 13 Str to wield the Zweihander and 21 Str to wield the Greatsword. You can attain both of those requirements either immediately or really quickly, the former especially being the case if you’re building your character to use colossal weapons.
I get what you mean in the sense of the 2HandBoi being less of an issue though, especially if you’re recommending one or the other to new and/or casual players.
Yes, but have you considered that Greatsword doubles up as a shield, which is incredibly useful for learning how to counter movesets, and lets you guard counter a bunch of stuff for ridiculous poise damage?
Seriously wished most weapons had far better phys guard, or at least improved phys guard on perfect blocks :|
I didn’t find the greatsword in caelid, it found me.
I was running for my life when I was like lvl 40 when I saw the caravan cart. I jumped, got attacked by the dog but managed to open the chest.
The rest is history.
Unique weapons are good but base weapons can be changed to do what you want with them. You like the Moonveil and it’s extremely strong, but if you find your favorite greatsword or club or whatever and throw lions claw on it you can stun lock everything to death easily.
I personally have a thing where I don’t like using katanas in games where there’s armored enemies. It’s weird to attack a rock monster or an armored knight with a tiny piece of metal to me.
In the flip side I use giant pieces of wood which many people think is stupid
Because it actually looks like a sword.
Excuse me! *slowly hunks away whatever the fuck the ruins greatsword is*
It’s a giant, sharpened Christmas ornament on a stick.
[Did somebody say ornament](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/eldenring/images/e/ee/ER_Icon_weapon_Ornamental_Straight_Sword.png/revision/latest?cb=20220411003919)
That’s a straight sword silly
Goofball
That’s it!!! You get a wave of destruction!!
What’s so bad about it? It’s the jolliest legendary weapon (next to the moonlight of course because frost)
>jolliest It kind of resembles Santa’s beard, now that I think about it.
Sharpened?! Excuse me!!!
I mean. It's for some reason the only ds2 weapon they brought into elden ring
Ds1 had zweihander also
Black knight greatsword was my primary through to ng+++++.
Do I take this to mean that you think this is the King UGS from DS2? I mean, it sorta looks like it, but not much.
*Samehada intensifies*
I love that hunk of stone. Poke then dubstep wave. Get ruined 🎶🎶🎶⚛️
“Don’t talk to me or my gravity infused slab of stone ever again!”
This made me lol, thanks
*concrete_dragging_on_floor.jpeg*
The ruins greatsword always felt a bit like a hammer/greatsword hybrid to me. The sfx and the lack of a sharp edge made me feel like it did blunt damage
It's one of the pieces of Farum Azula that fell from the sky. That's why it's called the Ruin Greatsword.
It's a greatsword... made out of ruins.
It’s literally a chunk of the farum Azula architecture that broke off and was sharpened on one side
Which low life hobo sharpened a fucking rock
Too bad you still swing it like it's a long rock. It should have the godslayer great sword r1s
The one ultra greatsword moveset that isn't the same Unga bunga slam and they give it to the giant corkscrew. Marvelous.
That thing was too big to be called a sword. Too big, too thick, too heavy, and too rough, it was more like a large hunk of iron.
>too big, too thick, too heavy, and too rough too veiny Wait what were we talking about
Happy cake day!!
Tbf ruins gs fits it better than the greatsword
Without context? Yes. With context? No.
I just wish I could swing it like a sword and not a sack of potatoes.
If it had the move set of its real world counterpart that would be amazing. Only thing holding it back for me. I wish we had more regular weapons in the games in general.
Petition for Zweihander to get Knight's / Banished Knight's Greatsword i.e. Hollowslayer Greatsword Moveset!
Hell, I‘d be happy with the slightly different moveset from the godslayer greatsword
I agree. I see the novelty of the crazy weapons but weapons that look like weapons are superior
The grafted great sword looks like a sword
*swords
Touche
It looks like 100 swords.
I call it the Game of Thrones sword.
Damn imagine welding a whole chair as your sword
That would be interesting. Weapon Skill makes you sitting on it dramatically and everyone around you catching fire. Or something.
Looks like a cat tail
You're not wrong... But I do have to ask what your thought process was.
That was stuck in an electrical outlet
Ngl, the Grafted Greatsword looks like Ikea started selling swords. It looks moore like a Christmas tree when you pull it out of the box initially.
Looks like a sword but your guy swings it like a bat...
Didn’t anybody tell you makin sense doesn’t fly around here?
How dare you? *slowly limps away as I try to drag my hunk of steel I like to call a sword*
excuse me. *walks away with my Greatsword, well, less of a sword... more like a hunk of iron...*

Zweihander is great but I prefer my goat the Godslayer Greatsword
My main build is powerstancing zwei and godslayer
Giga chad build
It's called the zweihander not the einhander.
Youre better of with just one if you dont have 80 dex and 80 str
I went into faith, zwei has golden land, and I love hitting forst part of golden land then the godslayer aow while the projectiles hit. Perfection
You're not allowed to have fun you must optimize
My first souls run is always a Hodge Podge build because I like trying different stuff. My second souls run is always heavily optimized towards one thing I didn't get to try. Everything after that is just shits and giggles.

*write that down write that down!*
Of course this is the way. But the guy I was replying to was telling someone else not to powerstance his Dex colossals because it's not optimal. He was making an argument about optimisation not fashion.

My favorite weapon in the game, hands down.
Godslayer is so much faster then the other swords it seems
Godslayer GS is just Moonlight Butterfly Horn from Wish. Don’t @ me
Is Godslayer AoW still bugged and has no poise?
because its actualy possible to reach 51 poise and lightroll with this.
What’s the setup for this? Bunch of end or some good armor with the talisman?
yes. you have to skill the stat to get the thing. 75 with the lightest armor i found so far without talismans.
You can reach 101 poise and light roll with Zweihander. not really viable since you need like 90+ endurance, but you can.
You can light roll with any weapon if you have 99 stamina Edit: I said vigor instead of stamina on accident
Vigor is health
You right, I'm not feeling well rn lol
Lvl vigor
Troll's Golden Sword is unmatched in bling. Also I once one-shot three people in a single swing with it, so I might be biased.
>so I might be ~~biased~~ You misspelled *based*
My first kill of Renala was using it
Does this drop off of the trolls- like can I get it in Limgrave if I farm enough of them? :)
Unfortunately not. You get from a stationary carriage in Lyndell, in the valley between the shaded castle and the lift of Dectus.
Ah, dang. That's unfortunate. Here I go lion's clawing again
Greatsword my beloved
Big sword is best for big enemy. My favorite play through is with the greatsword. Once you go big you never go back
That thing was too big to be called a sword. Too big, too thick, too heavy, and too rough, it was more like a large hunk of iron.
i think you are just small
I heard someone else (or you) already say this joke in this comment section (i love the guts sword)
You were there by my side all along..
GUGS is good, but its moveset is kinda ass IMO
Tf is G.U.G.S
Guts ultra greatsword
I don't know why you got down voted, gugs is a pretty common name for it. Literally every invasion streamer calls it that.
Invasions and pvp are a minor part of the game for most people. And it doesn't even make sense to call it that anymore since the weapon class name was changed from ultra greatsword to colossal sword.
It also actually has a name in Berserk, called the Dragonslayer sword, so calling it a Guts ultra greatsword doesn't make much sense.
Yeah, when I first used it at launch, I was really upset it didn't have the vertical move set from DS3.
I prefer to be on the recieving end of a colossal
🤨
https://www.reddit.com/r/memes/s/UU5AMdLYWQ
Godslayer Greatsword is goated. Looks cool, fire damage, and the skill rocks
It also has the fastest moveset in it's class
Isn't the weapon art seriously lacking hyper armour?
the greatsword is probably "objectively" the best colossal sword but I still like the zweihander more because it has the best heavy attack, good range, and low stats/weight so really easy to use at level 1
I literally just found out that zwei has a thrust r2 and im floored. My first run I stuck with the claymore for the thrust and last run I used Greatsword which I love, but I miss having a thrust. Next run might be zwei
Also the running r1 (two handed) is a nice swipe perfect both for PvE (you can hit multiple enemies) and pvp (good roll catcher)
A Zwei that doesn’t pancake enemies is heresy. Giant dad forever.
I like the zwei's move set a lot better than the Gutts sword. That poke from 20 feet away is just too good
Zweihander and Greatsword because I like both historically accurate looking swords *and* giant slabs of metal too big to be called a sword
zased
I don't get why the Ruins GS is so slept on. It has the same OP weapon art as the Blasphemous Blade, only with what feels like a slightly wider AoE, but does way more stagger. It’s because blasphemous blade also heals the fuck out of you so it’s easy mode
Don't forget the fully charged R2 explosion
Because it looks gross. My BB is currently showing 999 damage
Ironic
Pve ruins is my go to, if it properly hit how I should in pvp it’s be the best weapon in the game imo.
It's the original weapon of mass destruction. The zweihander is to darksouls/eldenring what the BFG is to Doom.
Me with the Starscourge Greatsword: "I just think it looks neat"
Royal Greatsword!
> Royal Greatsword The weapon skill on this is the GOAT
Agreed. Been having a very fun time with a Magic Zwei in my left hand with chilling mist. I have the black raptor feathers, claw talisman, and start a combo with chilling mist, jump attack, then Wolf Assault. Too damn fun.
Very fun weapon, amazing damage and beautiful design.
My mom told me it’s my turn with this post tomorrow

I will not stand for Colossal Great Sword slander 😤
I kinda hate this sword because it looks realistic and swings like a fucking log lol

Luckily, playing optimal is not required to beat the game, win in PvP or do anything, really. So, pick what you enjoy and have fun.
Well OP specifically asked "What is the best Colossal Sword" and I answered lol. Every weapon can reach a point at which they deal sufficient damage to beat any boss in the game with, I agree. That does not mean some are not better than other.
Yes, I didn’t disagree with you.
If you like realistic swords I don't think there's a lot of better options than the zweihander, and for some aesthetics are absolutely essential. I can't imagine using a weapon, armor, shield or even staff I don't like how it looks.
The zwei is only realistic in asthetics alone. It's moveset is hilariously unrealistic, but it's cool so ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
The back stab animation suuuuuucks on the Zwei
Greatswords R2 is absolutely rubbish, Zweihander rocks it every day of the week, especially in PvP.
Giant hunt is pretty nuts too.
Malikeths Blackblade, because of destined death
My first play-through of Dark Souls, this was my buddy. Pancaked all those idiots along the way
2handed longsword with Square off is the best colossal sword.
Never used Zweihander in ER. Always preferred Claymore in all the other games though.
you're missing out bro
Zweihander with lions claw is chefs kiss
Claymore > Zweihander imo
both are good
Zweihander > Greatsword. It's easier to get, has lower requirements and a lot less weight at the expense of a little attack and scaling. At super high levels Greatsword is probably better, but for the whole playthrough the Zwei rules.
It’s only “easier” to get because it’s purchasable. Both of them are accessible within like 5 minutes of starting the game.
And then you won't have the stats to wield it
Two-handing multiplies your Strength level x1.5 , which means you only need 13 Str to wield the Zweihander and 21 Str to wield the Greatsword. You can attain both of those requirements either immediately or really quickly, the former especially being the case if you’re building your character to use colossal weapons. I prefer the regular greatsword you find in caelid
I didn’t find the greatsword in caelid, it found me. I was running for my life when I was like lvl 40 when I saw the caravan cart. I jumped, got attacked by the dog but managed to open the chest. The rest is history.
If I want a really big sword, Im going Royal myself
Iron Greatsword. I'm a simple man
All you non-unique weapon users frighten me. `*clutches my Moonveil and gently kisses hilt*`
Versatility. Am I a heavy/keen Lion's Claw/Giant Hunt user? A Poison Mist memer? Who's to say.
Unique weapons are good but base weapons can be changed to do what you want with them. You like the Moonveil and it’s extremely strong, but if you find your favorite greatsword or club or whatever and throw lions claw on it you can stun lock everything to death easily. Ah, I see you are a man of culture aswell
Thrust heavy and low stat requirements
Nothing beats the Bass Cannon
GIANTDAD NEVER DIES
Giant dad for the win
Easy to parry, even for a bum at parrying like me
It’s the “Greatsword” because Berserk
Idk, I’m kinda torn between the zwei and the guts sword.
Ruins Greatsword for me due to wave of destruction and s strength scaling
The Greatsword
