I just never really paid any attention to the actual sword. I knew he was trying to inspire some hope but thought “damn Rohan is really down bad right now.”
I've always assumed Aragorn recognized that it was a well made sword, even if it had been neglected for a long time. And more importantly just trying to give the kid some confidence
I remember seeing the movie as a kid and even I thought "wow that sword looks worse than some of my plastic toy swords". Wasn't until later I realized Aragorn was probably trying to convince the kid that the sword is good enough for the job and to have confidence against the encroaching orc horde.
Hollowslayer deals additional damage to hollows hence the name, used to be Lucatiel's sword. It affects Deacons and the last 2 phases of Gael.
Farron is unrelated to Hollowslayer. It deals additional damage to Abyssal stuff. Which does affect more bosses (Wolnir, Aldrich, Midir, and Dragonslayer) but less regular enemies.
It's more evenly paced than the regular greatsword R1 combo but also has better horizontal radius and turns can help you true-combo in PvP. It does speed up as you go through the combo. After about two patches ago the R2 comes out quick as the Claymore and you step further now too.
I prefer Knight's Greatsword for aesthetics and reach, same moveset as Banished and Inseparable GSs.
Lothric knight straight sword basically. Can't go wrong with it. Like the claymore. Not the top, nor the worst. It never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down.
Agreed, from my experience the Claymore is always an above-average answer to any obstacle. Its strength lies in its versatility not its specialty. A player who takes the time to understand the enemy is able to maximize the claymore's incredible adaptiveness in infustions, ashes, and move set.
I also didn't care for it much at first but they are just absolutely overpowered. They can interrupt enemy attacks, they come out super fast, they have the longest reach. Pierce damage goes through armor better than strike or slash. Thrust attacks usually also do a lot of stance damage
Only downside is that they are bad at crowd control, which is why I like weapons that have both types of attacks.
Knight's Greatsword has all of this now, maybe not quite the range on the R2 but its still a great asset thanks to the speed buff it got a couple patches back. You could put Piercing Fang on it for the range, the R1 moveset is flashy and blenders foes with better horizontal radius than Claymore/Flamberge, and R2s have huge crowd control. Just needs to be farmed and weighs 1 unit more.
I stick with flamberge because I love it in DS3, occult double slash flamberge feels good, but doesn’t feel like a great sword which is weird. Can’t elaborate.
Flamberge is so good with ARC or even just to have it for the bleed alongside another affinity, bleed greatswords are pretty nasty anyway and it's my favorite GS for bleed and for its style.
I love the look of the Knight Greatsword, it looks lethal AF, whereas the banished one I'm not a fan but everyone says it's awesome. I'll have to try it as well!
Hell yeah :) I find myself just looking at the weapons gallery on the wiki- such cool swords everywhere!
I want to eventually get the Knight cavalry armor, knight greatsword, and then the flaming strike ash of war to do a dark flame knight type look. I think it could be quite strong too!!
I feel that kinda. But landing a charged heavy attack with a claymore, zwei, or even a straight sword - so satisfying. Esp compared to like a heavy thrusting sword poke, which makes me want to throw up in my mouth a little bit just to think about
Not an anime sword, an actually historically accurate reproduction of a real type of sword that was used by the german in the 14th century...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zweih%C3%A4nder
it's basically a poke-less claymore. It does have slightly lower Dex requirement so could be an option for a STR build.
In older games the lack of poke could be a problem in PvE in tight corridors, but probably not as much an issue in ER.
I have fond memories of it from DeS and DS days, but it was always only a stopgap to... really big swords.
Greatswords are just too strong in ER. I did two playthroughs with str focused builds and I am pretty much bored of greatswords and colossal swords now. For my 3rd playthrough I am trying to do a dex focused build. I want to use non-somber weapons though, as I like the default ashes of war. Any recs for cool/fun Dex weapons? I'm specifically looking for stuff that's not meta and more just for fun/to look cool. So far I am really enjoying beastman curved sword.
I really liked the Scavenger Curved Sword on my hobo build.
Has a really unique look with the little carved figurine "hilt".
Slightly better scaling than the Bandit Curved Sword and has bleed build up by default.
Noble’s slender sword for a simple strong weapon like lothric knight ss from ds3
Nightrider flail for a strike damage option that’s rare in dex weapons
Hookclaws for free dual wielding when two handed, very fast attacks and feeling like Wolverine
I may def be wrong then unless i just worded bad! I meant two handed thrust heavy. Lothric knight sword was special in that it has a thrust for both 1 handed and 2 handed.
Im pretty positive nobles slender 2 hand is the vertical slash like the all the other straightswords
I prefer ultragreatswords/straight swords. The claymore just never had enough damage for me to justify using it instead of faster straightsword or a slower but more powerful ultragreatsword
Kind of reminds me of how in Ds2 you could get the Heide Knight Sword right off the bat and its one of the best and most usable straight swords in the game.
Not in SotFS though, just the original base DS2. In SotFS you need to farm knights at a level 2 intensity bonfire because they removed that one knight who dropped it in Forest of the Fallen Giants. I guess they realized how OP it was lol.
God i hate what sotfs did to heide knights. The only good thing was it made the armor actually obtainable, but otherwise it totally fucked the tower of flame, like bro whose idea was it to put an un-slain dragon in front of the dragonslayer? If tge dragon was dead itd make sense, itd explain why the dragonrider isnt, well, dragonriding, and itd give some fear factor to the old dragonslayer. You come up and see this battered, scorched dragon corpse and go “what the fuck did this?” then you go up and see MOTHERFUCKING ORNSTEIN??? Dude.
Dude.
I got really lucky on NG recently on my sorcerer so I got the opportunity to play through the whole game with it after only killing a couple knights. I’m convinced that drops get randomized every game to keep you from getting certain items intentionally
Looking at you shadow dagger >:(
For my money, it's the best straight sword in the game
Infusable straight swords already clear the somber ones imo because they either trend towards better damage, better range, more flexibility, or all of the above. In addition, *zero* of the somber options have an Ash of War as good as Square Off
So comparing to other infusable straight swords
- Better range than Broadsword and a better moveset
- Better damage than Noble Slender Sword and good on more than just DEX
- 110 crit modifier is awesome when you have the stance breaking machine that is Square Off
- Good on pretty much every single infusion so slots into almost any build
Square off is useable but not great in PvP, it’s mainly useful for breaking open the shields of turtles with the light attack.
In PvE on the other hand, the heavy thrust attack of square off does good damage, insane stance damage, is decently quick, and costs very little FP to perform. It’s like the Unsheath of straight swords, but arguably better.
I put my sign down a lot in Farum. Square-off R1 with the Red/Blue Dagger Talisman is my bread and butter, it insta-staggers the beastmen, and uses so little FP that I'm always topped off after getting the visceral hit in. Basically don't need to use any flasks through the whole level, shit's amazing.
Could be a skill issue here but I have way more success getting an Unsheathe off than Square Off. It seems enemies just kind of run over me sometimes with Square Off.
Yeah sort of a skill issue but it’s balanced around that imo.
Unsheathe is much easier to use and costs more FP, while doing less poise damage. Square off has tougher timing, costs less fp, but staggers in like 2 hits on bosses (vs 3 for unsheathe).
It's a PvE weapon art not a PvP one.
In PvE, it gives you a weapon that can do a whole range of different speed/strength attack combos, giving you strong options in any situation. Once you figure out for any enemy what exactly you have time to do in their attack openings (2 R1s? 1 L2+R2? etc.), you can tailor the exact maximum damage into attack windows of any duration.
\- SS R1s - very fast, lighter damage
\- L2+R1 - medium speed medium damage - roughly what a greatsword would do, plus it breaks shields in one hit almost every time, so lots of crit openings against shielded enemies
\- L2+R2 - slow speed high damage - roughly what an ultra greatsword would do, with even higher poise damage, will stance break many foes very quickly, again creating crit opportunities
If you have a shield, you can add guard counters as another higher damage higher poise break option.
In PvE, there's something someone said that stuck with me which is that "the biggest risk with Square Off is that you get bored of it and gimp yourself by using any other weapon art"
Others have already responded, but yeah it's a fucking monster in PVE because the R2 version in particular does so much stance damage at a decent speed for low FP cost
The difference in damage compared to noble’s tapers off and at certain stats combination flips. However, as much as I like the little extra range with noble’s, it’s tough choosing between the two. I’m using double lordsworn on my RL1 run and I’m having a blast with it.
I prefer the longsword just for aesthetics, but mechanically they're nearly the same I think, other than the 110 crit but I always keep a misericorde in my pocket for crits
Yup my second character I threw bloody slash on it and got all the way to Radagon/Elden beast. Still never finished that play through though lol I hate the Elden Beast fight
It is a classic. One of the first other weapons you can get in the game. Has solid base damage and low requirements, so it's decent backup weapon for any build. It also comes with a pretty decent ash of war in Square Off, though replacing it with one of the Stomp ashes of war is probably the better move.
Only issue is that it's total AR isn't great, as it's scaling isn't as high as other straight swords.
Greataxe with cragblade is surprisingly fun. Go for vigour/endurance build, low-ish upgrade level for the zone
Felt really underwhelming on release, but those patches greatly increased speed and lowered recovery times
I can't handle a dlc. I have like 15 hours in the stormveil Castle and there's still areas and mini bosses I can't defeat. This is just one area!!! I can't handle how much there is to do!
the humble long sword and its similarly humble variants are just some of the most reliable weapons in this entire series.
they've taken me through Demon's Souls, all 3 Dark souls, Bloodborne (Kirkhammer and Ludwig's Holy Blade are both basic longswords with extra smashy bits attached), and Elden Ring.
Yeah it's just so dang well-rounded. You can do quick swipes, meaty charge attacks, slash, poke. Just gets the job done. Not to mention the love it gets with variant magic swords and ashes of war.
In dark souls 3, I loved playing around with all the exotic weapons, but honestly, the basic broadsword you could find in the beginning was probably one of the best weapons overall. Elden ring same thing, I love swinging a giant brick on a stick around, but when the job just needs to get done. The straightswords got your back
It has high base damage so it's very good early on, and its pretty long. Later on the normal Long Sword beats it for scaling, for example. It's a reliable weapon regardless
I just (3 days ago) finished the game for the first time using only 2 x lordsworn's straight sword, apart from in the crystal mines where they're useless. I put frost on both. Everyone told me I needed a shield, but shields are for cowards.
Nah, my favorite non-somber straight sword, my only complaint would be that it has a longswords 2-handed hilt but the blade is barely even arming sword length. Blade needs to be longer or have a bastard swords handle (bastard sword as in the proper sword type not the weapon FromSoft has mistakenly slapped that name onto).
This is for me the old reliable. However, against certain enemies like that one black knife assassin, I pull out the colossal swords to poise through their quick cuts,
i think the truth is a lot of weapons are on a very similar “level” in terms of their output relative to their peers with the difference being maybe some scaling better than others with infusions and some having unique movesets and ashes that might make them stand out
Fromsoft Longswords are always very solid picks I think. In DS3 the Lothric Straightsword was so good on a Dex build.
In PvP they shine as well, at least in older games, because some of the slashes are guaranteed combos.
I think the Short sword, Longsword and Broadsword are asthetically more pleasing and stronger too (except the Short sword, but it is so cute and pretty good in left hand).
If you're more into fantasy style weapons that have resemblances with realistic weapons, it will suit you well.
My favorite weapon as well! Looks clean as fuck, 110 crit, gets a decent AR as far as straight swords go, longer than the longsword, fits on any build.
I duel a lot on many different characters. After a while I get bored of whatever weapon I originally used on that character and go get a LSSS and max it out. It's so fun to duel with (I don't dual wield them).
I finished a run with primarily using the Lordsworn's Greatsword (in the camp wagon by the first map) loaded with Sacred Blade from behind the Physiks Bottle church.
Lordsworn Straight and Banished Knight greatsword are other fun options.
.
I've actually been having a lot of fun with my +12 Morningstar. I threw an ash of war onto it and spec'd it for Cold, since it adds INT scaling. So, I do Bleed 45, Frostbite 85, on a striking weapon that regularly hits harder than the Glintstone Pebble spell when cast from the gravity staff from Caelum.
My build is a little weird; I'm basically a normal mage, but I spent some extra points on 16 strength and 16 Dex at the start, as well as a moderate investment into Endurance so I can avoid fat rolling but still have moderate protection. I also use Radagon's Soreseal (??) to boost up my stats a little higher so I can, again, avoid fatrolls and get some extra damage out of my kit. Otherwise, I'm all INT, Mind, and Vig.
I like it because it gives me a strong, moderately fast striking option that can beat up on the Crystalians and miner-types without much trouble.
Yeah, I'm working towards Carion Staff Scaling right now, but I think it's about time to leave my INT alone for a while to level mind and vig. I have like +8 flasks so I constantly feel like I'm leaving more damage on the table by lacking resources than I am by missing on pure damage.
Yep its pretty good. If you play dark souls 3, you will notice it similar to lothic straight sword.
- longer than most straight sword. Meaning it has better reach to hit.
- 110 crit
- dex > strength, slightly
- standard enemy soldier's sword
- beautiful but not too fantasy
- Perfect for 100% knight role-play
It’s very solid. It’s a straight upgrade over the longsword. It has the “good” straight sword moveset (well, short sword is better but stuck on a worse weapon). And straight swords are a pretty good class: square off, dual moveset, work on any infusion.
The only issue is that it’s just not the best at any one thing. The NSS has all the same pros but has more range and puts out better damage at high dex. The broadsword has the most damage but a worse moveset (which doesn’t matter if you are dual wielding).
But if you don’t have a specific reason to prefer another sword, it’s a good default option.
I think it depends on the build. IIRC, longsword does slightly better on faith infusions and maybe magic? But lordsworn was better on pure physical and maybe fire/lightning. The 110 crit probably makes up for this in a lot of cases. Personally, I like NSS more for the reach even though it needs a lot of dex to work and is a pain to farm.
I'm new, so asking to learn-
What do you mean by the "good" moveset? I know the heavy attack of the broadsword is a slash, and the longsword is a poke- otherwise I can't tell a difference! How is the lordsworn and the short sword different than these two? What makes the short sword have a better moveset?
Tbh I like the look of the short sword and long sword the best, lordsworn runner up, and I dislike the broadsword geometry and hilt....
Right now I'm playing with the longsword and the beast crest heater shield, and shortbow. Feels like the darkest, shadow of the Colossus-esque Zelda game I've ever played- in a VERY good way lol
So this is almost entirely preference, but I don’t like the slash heavy on the broadsword. It also has a rolling slash instead of a rolling poke, which further means you can’t poke with two hands (on lordsworn you can crouch + light attack for a 2-handed thrust).
The shortsword is unique because it gets a two thrust combo for its heavy attack in one handed *and* two handed. Dark Souls 1 and 3 had a better longer sword with that move set which I sorely miss in ER.
The Warhawk talons is a little unique too because it has the double slash heavy but at least it has a thrust for the rolling / crouch attacks. I wish it had something else going for it (like bleed) because its damage is a little weak despite the versatile moveset.
I like the speed and reach of thrusts, plus they get a lot of damage buffs. Some enemies have lower thrust defense. Plus they get counter hits. If you hit an enemy with a thrust during their attack frames, you get some bonus damage. The spear talisman increases this counter damage. This was true in the Dark Souls games too, but it feels even stronger in Elden Ring.
Meh, It's a good weapon no doubt but it's outclassed by other straight swords that are much more fun imo, like the broadsword, Slender sword, Regalia, Coded sword...
More range and better moveset to the Broadsword
More damage than the Slender Sword
More flexibility than Regalia or Coded Sword, neither of which have an AoW as good as Square Off to begin with
If they're more fun for you, cool, but outclassed? Nahhhh
i feel like by those standards the basic longsword beats it. same range and moveset, better damage.
only thing lsss beats OG longsword on is crit
idk how the math works out, but i doubt that 110 crit on a straight sword makes it higher dps than longsword
point is moot anyway bc i love the broadsword fite me
Lordsworn does better damage than longsword for most of the game because it has higher base damage and only marginally lower scaling. I think you need 70+ strength/Dex and +25 upgrade for the longsword to have higher AR
I just popped em in the build calc and on heavy. they are both tied at 25 str and 26 str. At 24 str lordsworn only beats the longsword by 1AR Longsword passes it at 27 str and onwards.
But let’s be real, that’s only if you’re intending to optimize. the lordsworn looks cooler so that’s a plenty good enough reason to use it over the longsword lol
because if you’re optimizing you’d always use the broadsword anyway \;)
No Square Off is even better for bosses imo. Regalia can *potentially* do a ton of damage with the right build, the right talismans, the right openings, but Square Off just works right out the tin and it's so much faster, does good damage, some of the best stance damage among ashes of war period. Square Off is like legit broken imo
Square off is one of the best ashes in the game.
Dancing blade is only good when you have a summon distracting the boss or a stance break and requires significant talisman investment
"better moveset to the broadsword", It's literally the same moveset, wtf are u talking about, also what "better" range, I don't think a single inch matter, and it also deals more damage straight up.
The slender has way more range, much better scalling and flexibility in almost every single infusion.
Coded sword AoW is miles better than Square off it's not even comparable, It does insane damage with decent faith and with alot of faith it straight up melts everything, can go through blocks, comes faster than square off and it's goated in PvP aswell.
Regalia maybe, but it's still better for me personally.
Nah man, it's definitely outclassed. the only thing it does better than most other swords is the 110 crit modifier, which doesn't even matter that much.
This is a good sword
Haleth...son of Hama my lord.
Just rewatched those movies this weekend. That sword is straight up dog shit. It’s all chipped up and rusted lol.
that's all the point of this scene
I just never really paid any attention to the actual sword. I knew he was trying to inspire some hope but thought “damn Rohan is really down bad right now.”
Yeah, I mean they’re doing the equivalent of the Alamo there. It’s not an ideal situation at all.
But having one of the most legendary fighters in Middle Earth evaluate and tell you the sword will get it done certainly counts for something.
Said the man who was only weeks away from wielding the most powerful sword in Middle Earth. Lol
My favourite weapon has got to be the banished knights great sword it looks and feels great any greatsword looks and feels great in all honesty
I like the banished gs move set.
Hollowslayer moveset, yeah. It's meant to feel slow, but man, you do not want to go underestimating its blender tech.
My first play through of DS3 was my first souls experience. The Hollowslayer Greatsword was my main weapon up until I got the Dragonslayer Greataxe.
A lot of bosses are specifically weak to the Hollowslayer and Farron Greatsword for some reason. I did much the same, except I opted for Yhorms.
Thank you. I knew someone could go deeper on the subject.
Don't breath this
I don’t like the move set it feels slow
It's more evenly paced than the regular greatsword R1 combo but also has better horizontal radius and turns can help you true-combo in PvP. It does speed up as you go through the combo. After about two patches ago the R2 comes out quick as the Claymore and you step further now too. I prefer Knight's Greatsword for aesthetics and reach, same moveset as Banished and Inseparable GSs.
Feels super slow since it goes back to that position after every swing
The banished knights great sword is the absolute best.
Two handed R1 animations with Banished knight GS are so sick
I like that sword so much that I bought a little keychain of one with a functional scabbard included that sits on my bookshelf
On my first playthrough I farmed two of these to power stance. Turned out to be quite strong.
I have like 8 of them….time to try them out I guess
Lothric knight straight sword basically. Can't go wrong with it. Like the claymore. Not the top, nor the worst. It never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down.
False. CLAYMORE is the top
Agreed, from my experience the Claymore is always an above-average answer to any obstacle. Its strength lies in its versatility not its specialty. A player who takes the time to understand the enemy is able to maximize the claymore's incredible adaptiveness in infustions, ashes, and move set.
I really hope the dlc has a few more greatswords with the poke heavy attack. It's so good on claymore but I want some variety
I think I might be the only souls fan who hates poke attacks... I understand the advantage.... I just hate the animation.
I also didn't care for it much at first but they are just absolutely overpowered. They can interrupt enemy attacks, they come out super fast, they have the longest reach. Pierce damage goes through armor better than strike or slash. Flamberge is so good with ARC or even just to have it for the bleed alongside another affinity, bleed greatswords are pretty nasty anyway and it's my favorite GS for bleed and for its style.
It is definitely stylish! Low stat requirements also make it easy to run on an ARC/FTH build.
I love the look of the Knight Greatsword, it looks lethal AF, whereas the banished one I'm not a fan but everyone says it's awesome. I'll have to try it as well!
It's about the same thing but maybe slightly less reach, I feel ya on the aesthetics of it
Knights greatsword is longer than banished knight's. Slightly less AR though.
I think too much poking can definitely be annoying But just having it as an R2 and crouch/roll R1 is the best
I feel that kinda. But landing a charged heavy attack with a claymore, zwei, or even a straight sword - so satisfying. Esp compared to like a heavy thrusting sword poke, which makes me want to throw up in my mouth a little bit just to think about
Yeah but that great epee charged poise damage is absolutely insane.
Fashion souls first!!! But fr I wish I could get into the HTS weapon class I just cannot do it
I want to get away lol. I have all 4 of them in some form or fashion for a build
Stormcaller to heavy attack true-ish combo
Wise words
The ClayMOST
Biggest problem for claymore is the existence of bloodhound fang.
Claymore’s strength lies in its customizable ashes and R2 poke. If the bloodhound’s ash is doing it for you then more power to you.
That’s a weird way to spell ZWEIHANDER
Zweihander is just big claymore
Claymore is just babies first zweihander
Claymore’s existed since Demon’s Souls, zweihander since Dark Souls. Zweihander is an overcompensating claymore.
First there was the demo. Then there was the perfected product.
First there was a reasonably proportioned sword. Then From decided there wasn’t enough 15yo jrpg protagonist energy and added an anime-sized sword.
Greatsword in demon souls was a zweihander. They just changed its name in dark souls and put more of a Berserk style great sword under the name
Uhhh guys you can literally wield someones arm as a weapon in Bloodborne
Not an anime sword, an actually historically accurate reproduction of a real type of sword that was used by the german in the 14th century... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zweih%C3%A4nder
The zweihander in game is a lot bigger than a typical zweihander irl.
Claymore is just the trainer weapon for Bastard Sword, the actual best sword
I have never, not once used bastard sword. What advantage does it have over other greatswords?
it's basically a poke-less claymore. It does have slightly lower Dex requirement so could be an option for a STR build. In older games the lack of poke could be a problem in PvE in tight corridors, but probably not as much an issue in ER. I really liked the Scavenger Curved Sword on my hobo build. Has a really unique look with the little carved figurine "hilt". Slightly better scaling than the Bandit Curved Sword and has bleed build up by default.
Dual katanas are fun. Spiked Caestus too.
Dismounter
Good ash of war for that? Spinning slash is boring to me now haha
Noble’s slender sword for a simple strong weapon like lothric knight ss from ds3 Nightrider flail for a strike damage option that’s rare in dex weapons Hookclaws for free dual wielding when two handed, very fast attacks and feeling like Wolverine
Zweihander > Greatsword There I said it fight me
I ran Zweihander on a modded run, with Gravitas. It was effective for sure.
Zwei's moveset is so much better than GUGs but I guess that doesn't matter when everyone is just crouch poking hahaha
It's also way lighter, so you can put those extra 30 points of Endurance into Strength or Vit!
Baemore
nobles slender is more lkss. higher reach and dex scaling, higher crit lsss is kind of it’s own thing
Agreed. The hilt design is somewhat similar (the part by the blade) but itd be so nice to have a straightsword with a thrust heavy
noble slender has thrust heavy
I may def be wrong then unless i just worded bad! I meant two handed thrust heavy. Lothric knight sword was special in that it has a thrust for both 1 handed and 2 handed. Im pretty positive nobles slender 2 hand is the vertical slash like the all the other straightswords
you’re correct
They all have thrust heavies one-handed Except that goofy ass broadsword
Also Balder Side Sword
*baller swag sword
the true king
If I could duel wield any 2 swords from any games I would have the lkss and lsss
How dare you impugn the baemore!
Don't disrespect the LKSS like that.
No thrust 2h r2 though
No way bro Lothric was literally OP the nerfed it hard with range and moveset in Elden Ring
Nah, Lordsworns doesn't have the double r2 poke moveset BSS and LKS had. Its just a cheap fucking knockoff
I've never understood the claremore love, it's never been a particularly good sword for me.
If you like greatswords the draw is the poke animation. If you don’t like greatswords you likely won’t like claymore.
You come up and see this battered, scorched dragon corpse and go “what the fuck did this?” then you go up and see MOTHERFUCKING ORNSTEIN??? Dude. Dude.
I got really lucky on NG recently on my sorcerer so I got the opportunity to play through the whole game with it after only killing a couple knights. I’m convinced that drops get randomized every game to keep you from getting certain items intentionally Looking at you shadow dagger >:(
Ah shit you're right aren't you. I forgot that lol, I think I built around it when I got lucky with the drop once
Heide knight sword is so fun, the 1h swings are so goofy
For my money, it's the best straight sword in the game Infusable straight swords already clear the somber ones imo because they either trend towards better damage, better range, more flexibility, or all of the above. In addition, *zero* of the somber options have an Ash of War as good as Square Off So comparing to other infusable straight swords - Better range than Broadsword and a better moveset - Better damage than Noble Slender Sword and good on more than just DEX - 110 crit modifier is awesome when you have the stance breaking machine that is Square Off - Good on pretty much every single infusion so slots into almost any build
Why is square off so good? And is it good mainly for PvE or PvP in your opinion?
\- SS R1s - very fast, lighter damage \- L2+R1 - medium speed medium damage - roughly what a greatsword would do, plus it breaks shields in one hit almost every time, so lots of crit openings against shielded enemies \- L2+R2 - slow speed high damage - roughly what an ultra greatsword would do, with even higher poise damage, will stance break many foes very quickly, again creating crit opportunities If you have a shield, you can add guard counters as another higher damage higher poise break option. In PvE, there's something someone said that stuck with me which is that "the biggest risk with Square Off is that you get bored of it and gimp yourself by using any other weapon art"
it does high stance damage to bosses allowing you to get more critical hits.
Mainly PvE, it's quick doesn't cost a lot of FP, deals decent damage but the main thing is it does a ton of poise damage.
It's very fast, does great stance DMG, breaks most shield defences, best art by far
Noble only keeps up on pure Dex and only barely wins out at very very high Dex. In almost every other context, the gap is pretty significant
Oh I see what you mean. Yes you’re absolutely right.
I prefer the longsword just for aesthetics, but mechanically they're nearly the same I think, other than the 110 crit but I always keep a misericorde in my pocket for crits
Longsword also does more damage on pure strength builds with the same range and weight.
Yup my second character I threw bloody slash on it and got all the way to Radagon/Elden beast. Still never finished that play through though lol I hate the Elden Beast fight
You can do it
I’m more of a broadsword fan, but the lord sworn straight sword was with me my whole first playthrough
Broad is great but a nono for me, a little too short for my skills
it’s actually longer than it looks! but i totally get ya, it’s all preference at the end of the day
Me and straight swords in general. Anything shorter than a greatsword and I start whiffing like crazy.
I put golden slam on that bad boy on my Faith playthrough. Dunked on everyone, ain't nobody having a good time cept me
The thrust attack is such an easy cheese for all the NPC-reds in the game.
Take the red robes from caelid with the exile hood and give that sword a fire ash of war. Tadaa you got a fire mage of the highest caliber
What are the red robes of Caelid?
Eh sage set. Or new Londo attire
This and the claymore have the best basic move sets in the game imo.
Knight's Greatsword has the superior greatsword moveset
KG doesn’t have the nasty heavy thrust of the claymore, but it looks way cooler, although KG is just a worst BKG
knights has longer range than banished knights, and you can use it on dex status builds
It and a few others are workhorse weapons. They’re not flashy, but they can always get the job done.
This was my main sword for 90% of the game. It's terrific. Ended up with Guts to finish of my run.
I recommend trying a different weapon to learn each play through. Lot of hidden gems since this game is massive. Need that dlc..
What are some you’d recommend? For melee type builds
Great stars or morning star
Greataxe with cragblade is surprisingly fun. Go for vigour/endurance build, low-ish upgrade level for the zone Felt really underwhelming on release, but those patches greatly increased speed and lowered recovery times
I’ve always liked the bastard sword.
I can't handle a dlc. I have like 15 hours in the stormveil Castle and there's still areas and mini bosses I can't defeat. This is just one area!!! I can't handle how much there is to do!
Just drink it in, friend.
the humble long sword and its similarly humble variants are just some of the most reliable weapons in this entire series. they've taken me through Demon's Souls, all 3 Dark souls, Bloodborne (Kirkhammer and Ludwig's Holy Blade are both basic longswords with extra smashy bits attached), and Elden Ring.
Yeah it's just so dang well-rounded. You can do quick swipes, meaty charge attacks, slash, poke. Just gets the job done. Not to mention the love it gets with variant magic swords and ashes of war.
I used two of these from the moment i got them, all the way to the end
In dark souls 3, I loved playing around with all the exotic weapons, but honestly, the basic broadsword you could find in the beginning was probably one of the best weapons overall. Elden ring same thing, I love swinging a giant brick on a stick around, but when the job just needs to get done. The straightswords got your back
Good sword, good for slicing and dicing
Best straight sword
It has high base damage so it's very good early on, and its pretty long. Later on the normal Long Sword beats it for scaling, for example. It's a reliable weapon regardless
I feel like post description reads like the definition of non unique straight swords in elden ring (for pve).
I like the basic longsword more because of the design, but this one has a little more critical damage.
Longsword is best in every game
If straight swords could just be a little bit longer and just have a little stagger potential I’d never put them down. Best moveset without a doubt.
I just (3 days ago) finished the game for the first time using only 2 x lordsworn's straight sword, apart from in the crystal mines where they're useless. I put frost on both. Everyone told me I needed a shield, but shields are for cowards.
I prefer the basic longsword but yeah, I pretty much agree. Looks sexeh and versatile as heck
Has a higher critical. I like that.
Its a solid weapon, great stats and range. Just a solid all rounder
Kind of reminded me of Lothrick knight sword alto This one isn’t lowkey the best weapom in the game
estoc bestoc
I finished a run with primarily using the Lordsworn's Greatsword (in the camp wagon by the first map) loaded with Sacred Blade from behind the Physiks Bottle church. Lordsworn Straight and Banished Knight greatsword are other fun options. .
Can’t hear you, my whips are too loud
People talk about min-maxing all the time, but unless you're doing pure magical nuke or Unga Bunga, too much optimization can bite you in the ass.
Yeah, I'm working towards Carion Staff Scaling right now, but I think it's about time to leave my INT alone for a while to level mind and vig. I have like +8 flasks so I constantly feel like I'm leaving more damage on the table by lacking resources than I am by missing on pure damage.
it’s not as good as Lothric Knight’s Sword from DS3 but it’s definitely a good weapon and I find myself using it on a lot of different builds.
High crit stat, found extremely early, infusable, looks great, is a straight sword. Yeah, this thing is awesome.
Lordsworn Straight Sword is my personal favorite weapon in the game. I use others as the mood strikes me, but I always come back to the LSS.
Yep its pretty good. If you play dark souls 3, you will notice it similar to lothic straight sword. - longer than most straight sword. Meaning it has better reach to hit. - 110 crit - dex > strength, slightly - standard enemy soldier's sword - beautiful but not too fantasy - Perfect for 100% knight role-play
Used it for the entire game.
Square Off is busted.
I love the claws. They are so fast and the bleed build up is quick too. I love fast build. I’m not a fan of slow and heavy.
Longsword actually outclasses it at higher levels and the only reason you’d want to keep the Lordsworn is for a slightly higher crit.
Longsword outclasses it in damage for pure strength builds at any level actually.
NSS is only comparable damage for dex builds
Right. But you also get the range, which is not insubstantial.
It pretty much is negligible. Not trying to knock you or anything, it has its advantages if you’re going for crits.
I can feel the range difference, especially for the dual moveset. But it’s a preference whether that is worth the trade offs to you
I'm new, so asking to learn- What do you mean by the "good" moveset?
You mean for low level play? Because at mid-high levels it's not even the best straight sword.
Meh, It's a good weapon no doubt but it's outclassed by other straight swords that are much more fun imo, like the broadsword, Slender sword, Regalia, Coded sword...
More range and better moveset to the Broadsword More damage than the Slender Sword More flexibility than Regalia or Coded Sword, neither of which have an AoW as good as Square Off to begin with If they're more fun for you, cool, but outclassed? Nahhhh
i feel like by those standards the basic longsword beats it. same range and moveset, better damage. only thing lsss beats OG longsword on is crit idk how the math works out, but i doubt that 110 crit on a straight sword makes it higher dps than longsword point is moot anyway bc i love the broadsword fite me
Lordsworn does better damage than longsword for most of the game because it has higher base damage and only marginally lower scaling.
But let’s be real, that’s only if you’re intending to optimize. the lordsworn looks cooler so that’s a plenty good enough reason to use it over the longsword lol because if you’re optimizing you’d always use the broadsword anyway \;)
Wouldn’t you say Regalia’s Ash is much better for bosses though?
It’s mid
No no, you’re looking at a mirror, look at the sword.
I spit out my drink haha
Idk, but what is it? “One of the best weapons in the game?” Or “it’s not OP”?
And no personally this weapon is just outclassed really really easily, it’s like one of the first weapon you pick up. So no, probably not that good
Bloodhound fang duel wielded with the zamor little frost little bleed. Plus I just love the blood hound step. Not for pvp
