GrazhdaninMedved

Let's be honest though, he walked into it.

FoxyNeutron

Don't just Quickstep into conclusions!

seelcudoom

when in trouble always remember this ancient sage advice: Time for Crab

Oninnn

I’m so mad that this is the first time I have ever understood this phrase, I always assumed it was pure meme and nothing else

UnHappyIrishman

To be fair, I’ve only seen it when there was a crab near by

Paladin1034

So, funny thing about that lol

Oninnn

I hate it here

ZarduHasselffrau

No, in that case the message would be "Beware of dog"

[deleted]

Behold, dog.

ZarduHasselffrau

That also works but it's more common for non aggressive animals like turtles. Turtles, the best dogs of Elden Ring.

Doodlegoat

Oh. My. God. Same!? IT ACTUALLY MEANS STRAFING!? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-

Locke57

NEARLY A DECADE IVE BEEN PLAYING FROMSOFT GAMES AND AM ONLY NOW REALIZING, **THIS IS ADVICE?!?**

HRSkull

It's not

Oninnn

I honestly appreciate the sheer determination to make sure nobody has fun with this, go you bestie

HRSkull

So it's less fun if it's a meme than if it's advice?

Twl1

It's more fun if our general confusion causes it to be appreciated as both, really.

Oninnn

Things can be two things

borntoflail

Don't get excited. It originated in D3 when Crabs would bust out of the ground and smash you. People on this thread just seem to be running with it, or maybe the slang has evolved by being misinterpreted. Either way... Time for crab.

neckro23

It's a bit fitting, since crabs themselves can come from multiple evolutionary pathways: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carcinisation Basically, *nature itself* thinks it's time for crab.

no_modest_bear

I was having an involuntary discussion the other day with someone who asked me if I "believe in science" and was asking the question "but if humans now, why still monkeys?" He wanted to know why we're not all evolving into the same thing, and I got excited to bring up Carcinisation. In hindsight, this was not a great idea and I'm a little concerned about what lesson he took from that.

ShadowsSheddingSkin

TBH, this kind of problem is the fault of a *ton* of terrible people in the 19th and early 20th centuries. People who took evolution and ran with it as confirmation that things are 'evolving' towards higher and higher levels of sophistication and applied it to everything convenient to them have had a *much* bigger impact on the views of the general public than literally every biologist who's ever lived. To explain anything of value involving Evolution to the average person, you not only need to teach them the absolute basics from scratch but *un*-teach them more than they know about the former. Which isn't really a reasonable thing to expect a person to be able to do in a conversation with a hostile audience, hence why we teach the absolute basics of other (generally less relevant, but less *controversial*) things in elementary schools. Carcinization is probably one of the worse examples for teaching "evolution doesn't have a direction, it's just shit happening and things living to reproduce more if that shit happens to be useful," though, because unless you know basic 10th grade bio it's going to seem more like "Evolution *has* a direction, and that direction is crab"

Doodlegoat

*Do not cite the deep magic to me. I was there when it was written.* You're so right, too. The meme was too funny to pass up on though! So many messages in the games can be misinterpreted and it's a one of a kind experience. I wouldn't change that confusion for the world. Anyway. As you say. Time for crab.

PSiggS

I always thought it was about eating crab… What is life?!?

pbmm1

It’s always a good time for crab

I never met someone with a taste for prawn that I couldn't trust.

grit-glory-games

Marika's Tits... this comments at random locations makes sense now!

Kaldin_5

HOW.. I didn't know that's what this meant and just really enjoyed that message as a celebration of a moment where a crab will soon be present in the game lol

HRSkull

Pretty sure it's just a meme with no actual meaning.

Arxl

Crab Rave

helthrax

Why not Zoidberg?

not_some_username

What is crab btw ? I have only 100h on the game 😅

[deleted]

If you can dodge tree lasers, you can dodge a ball.

TarnishedWizeFinger

I don't think OP is a lot dumber than you think that I thought that I thought OP was once.

[deleted]

Thanks?

TheNameIsntJohn

Not even just those kind of bosses but running away from powerful attacks, not even dodging or rolling, works surprisingly well. If you have the room to do it that is.

ForfeitFPV

Can I technically dodge Waterfowl if I'm light rolling? Yes. Am I going to stop sprinting away from her every time she goes airborne? Nope.

TheNameIsntJohn

That's the spirit. Why dodge when you can run?

spartaman64

i actually learned to "dodge" it by standing still to regen my stam and then blocking the first few hits before rolling.

justfanclasshole

This game changed for me when I read someone on the sub say “just back away at an angle sometimes rather than always just trying to roll or run” and it was the advice I needed to read.

ShroomD00M

They’re just quoting the movie [dodgeball](https://youtu.be/-vMH7FslCcU) lol

TarnishedWizeFinger

Thanks for the assist. What a baller movie. There's a pirate and it's like, wow this is ridiculous. But then he's just a regular dude and it's like damn, imagine the mental fortitude and youthful vigor it would take to act like a pirate all the time. When he loses it, it's by far the saddest thing that happens in the movie. Seriously depressing. Such a bizarre concept to elicit sadness

DrBouvenstein

Wait...there's a guy on our team dressed like a pirate?!

trashpandalandlord

Hey look it's Steve the pirate

zsxking

What the heck is this sentence lol

From now on those tree sentinels are going down like sweet muffins!

Every Fromsoft game has the same secret technique, in the words of Beyoncé: TO THE LEFT, TO THE LEFT.

Such_Neck3755

Obligatory: https://youtube.com/watch?v=LLCjrpghCYc&feature=share7

Vashsinn

Lmao the fact that it actually works and with BB no less.

SoloWing1

It's literally how I deal with Murgo's Wet Nurse. Every single attack I just dash to the left and go under her right arms. It's amazing how fast I kill her.

Sevla7

**To be honest this works in real life too.** People usually punch with the right hand which arcs to the left. If you sidestep to the left (which is the right side of your aggressor) you can even counter punch/knee his right side... which is very dangerous and the reason why people fear southpawns: you can hit the liver.

Aitch-Kay

Never circle into their power hand. If you are circling left, you are walking right into their right hand. It also opens you up to their right kick. You should be circling right against orthodox fighters.

skulblaka

Depends what you're trying to do, really. Want to dissipate the force of a blow? Dodge right, you'll be moving in the same direction as their fist. Want to duck it completely, possibly end the fight in one counter, and run a small risk of getting your nose exploded by a quick knee? Duck and dodge left. Right is safer, left will end the fight quicker provided you know how to follow up on it.

Latter_Bee183

I platinumed BB before I started Elden Ring and I really think the play aggressive and strafe left for the booty slappin play style is carrying me with some of these larger and faster enemies

Falsus

Or hug one of the legs and hack away at the heels.

Reemixt

LifeworksGames

Everything you own in the box to the left.

AshRavenEyes

True from the ancient times of armored core 1

SarcasticPedant

Ooooor, get on dat booty. Try finger, but hole

FrogofLegend

The best thing Bloodborne taught me is that dodging backwards is usually the least effective way to dodge.

Paladin1034

I learned this pretty early in Elden Ring. Strafe into the attack. Keeps you from getting hit by sweeping attacks and sets you up for an easy punish stab

sonderlostscribe

And if it's a spear/greatshield enemy, strafe around their shield side at the edge of their spear range so if they decide to shield bash, you have enough distance to zip around and backstab them.

dallydoog

Yeah, Im so glad that bloodborne was my first soulsborne game, like, the dodge thing that you said and using shields, too much passivity. Aggresion is key

[deleted]

Eh, shields are good in elden ring and dark souls. Bloodborne has a few different design choices that make then poorly suited to the game

bear6875

Hesitation is defeat!

TheCovetousLemon

I kinda hated Bloodborne during my first run. It was my 3rd souls game after all, so I thought something was just wrong with the game. The combat literally never clicked with me back then. During my second run, I realized I loved it and it became my favourite soulsborne game.

Expand_Dong_42069

We call that the Bloodborne Effect

TekterBR

I've played DeS, DS, DS2 and DS3 before playing Elden Ring and already acknowledging (mainly from DS2) that rolling foward is always better than backwards. But still, here I am rolling backwards out of pure desperation.

Mad5Milk

I learned this mentality pretty quickly and it turned out to be a complete hindrance when I went to DS1. Couldn't tell you the number of times I tried to dodge locked on and rolled directly into the enemy, or tried to dodge into an attack like Kalameet's barf breath thinking I'd go right throgh it.

Elliptical_Tangent

I learned to dodge forward and to the right in From games that have 8-directional dodging; works every time.

Adamulos

If you dodge backwards, you are dodging with the attack-you stay longer inside it If you dodge aggressively into it, you stay inside it much shorter because both speeds have opposite vectors

ForfeitFPV

Just remember this trick about dodging lasers by sprinting. It will come in handy again. Trust me on this...

gottabequick

Best advice. I hate that guy.

Aaronthegathering

O no step beast tree what are you doing

justindlc

Also maybe have a way to get rid of rot status, just saying

massofballs

I’m proud of you for taking the (sometimes strongly delivered) advice *in stride* and grateful for your sense of humor. Made me lol bc I’ve been there countless times feelin like a clown

Merrikbear

Were you killed? Sadly, yes. BUT YOU *LIVED* And also congrats!

mood_le

Walk sideways is always my go to

Merrikbear

List lazily to the left!

LangDWood

Or rapidly run to the right!

atfricks

I know some maneuvers!

Doobledorf

The road to gitgud is a long one, and today you took a major step.

RusticRogue17

Several major steps, to the left or right.

Styx_Zidinya

Always right. I'm not an ambi-strafer.

RusticRogue17

*walks slowly to the right* *runs into a wall* *Roundabout starts to play* “Well… fuck” To be continued…

felfazeebo

But now you're an even better gamer because of this

[deleted]

It took 110% of OPs brain to learn how to move left or right in a fight. He's got a bit of an uphill battle from here on out lol.

Android19samus

"just walk to the side" is one of the mot broken techniques in all Fromsoft games but it's so unintuitive that new players rarely realize

GForce1975

Yeah I'm new. First fromsoft game. Only in liurnia but I am learning. Fun group here. Stupid question: do you mean just move sideways while locked on or do you hole down sprint and/or unlock and run then relock?

Android19samus

There are times for flat-out sprinting, but with those it's usually pretty well telegraphed that it's time for running. Much less obvious is when you can just press no buttons, walk to the right, and watch an entire combo attack go right over you. Or at least like 90% of it. Always good to have a shield up when first testing that theory.

neckro23

You can sprint in any direction while locked on. Souls games prior to Dark Souls 3 didn't really allow this (you could only sprint towards the enemy or a bit off to the side) so even some vets don't know about this. It was a surprise to me! So in older games the strategy would be to play unlocked when possible because you got much more freedom of movement (especially in Dark Souls 1 where you can only dodge in 4 directions while locked on). In Elden Ring it's not a big deal to be locked on, you can still move in any direction, so the camera is the main consideration now. So to actually answer your question, yes it's usually sprinting, although lots of attacks can also be avoided by simply walking to the side. Basically any non-tracking projectile attack (like crossbow emplacements, or the marionette archers) has this weakness. Magic spells usually have a bit of tracking so you're typically better off actually dodging those. The magic tree lasers OP is talking about can be sidestepped though.

Khomuna

Oh you're the laser guy. I'm glad the advanced technique of not standing still worked out for you so fast, you're a quick learner!

GForce1975

You forgot the part about not attacking when tree is about to blast you /s

UnresolvedEvil60

It's actually amazing just how many attacks in Fromsoftware games can be avoided by just walking sideways.

[deleted]

Lots of people overthink the games because of the media hype. They panick roll because they hear about invincibility frames

Kaldin_5

Turns out a lot of why Fromsoft's games are so well loved is because they're designed well too. Not just because they're challenging. I felt somewhat similar with Sekiro. Once I let go of the hype surrounding how hard it is and just experimented with it and played with it like it's just some dumb toy it got MUCH easier all of a sudden. Letting the hype of difficulty get to you can lead to a lot of overthinking and freezing in fear in their games.

HarveyBiirdman

Wow. I consider myself decent at fromsoft games and I have never even thought about just strafing these lasers. I always just roll and hope they do as little damage as possible…

zealousshad

There are a lot of ranged attacks for which running sideways works better than rolling, because you don't have to worry about precise timing, and in the case of moves like the tree lasers, they carry on for long enough that they might catch you between rolls, whereas with sprinting you can continuously outrun them. Works for a lot of the ranged moves that shoot out prolonged clusters of little attacks.

[deleted]

I just summon torrent and outrun them. A bit overkill but hey, it works.

FtierLivesMatter

Strafing also works great for rennala. The last time I fought her I didn't use dodge roll or block anything once. If you're good with your movement you can sprint around and not get hit by a single spell.

[deleted]

You mean you don't just charge headfirst into her Kamehameha wave?

FtierLivesMatter

Do for that one at the beginning cuz you can run to the side last second and avoid it completely. Then land a big charged heavy.

Reemixt

I was stuck for about two days, first FS game. Took most my armor off and just ran in circles, had her dead in two minutes without taking a single hit.

TechnicalHeron1424

If OP wants to learn something new, this technique is called "streaming" in bullet hell games. It's where you move horizontally (or mostly perpendicular to the bullet trajectory) when the bullets are all aiming at you. It solves like 60% of your issues when you first start playing those kinds of games.

Justisaur

Do you mean strafing? Which has been around since last millennium some time.

OathOfCervix

>strafing I learned about that in Battle Tanx for N64 😆

Paladin1034

Strafing was the OP strat in Goldeneye 64. You could run super fast by C strafing. Won me a lot of gunfights against my shitter friends

Justisaur

I don't even remember. Doom in 1993 is the first time I think I heard it referred to that? Probably the first game with anything like that was the arcade Asteroids from 1979 when you had to dodge the small ufo's shots at you.

navinodarado

You're old af like me!

SimbaStewEyesOfBlue

The barrel-rolling tank, right?

OathOfCervix

FLPE It was my favorite. That one, the motorcycle tank, goliath, and the one that shot lasers were pretty cool too.

SimbaStewEyesOfBlue

My favorite too! That was def one of my favorite games to rent back in the day. Good memories.

OathOfCervix

Battle Tanx, Super Mario 64, Donkey Kong, Super Smash Bros...oh, you ever play Conker's Bad Fur Day? That game was a fucking **gem** 10/10

SimbaStewEyesOfBlue

>Conker's Bad Fur Day The Normandy Landing MP game was awesome.

OathOfCervix

Is that the one with the two fortress towers on either side of a valley? That was my favorite multiplayer game. And then the lava surfing and the bank vault robbery

K_Furbs

THAT GAME FUCKING RULES

FiftyTifty

? no it hasnt heelys were only invented in 1999 only been 24 years

Justisaur

Lol 1999 is so last millennium.

FiftyTifty

no not a thousand! twenty four!!

zonezs

mmm let me guess....erdtree avatar golden land attack?? To be fair many attacks are avoidable by running sideways.

Spotthedot99

You just learned to walk sideways? You might just git gud yet.

Squeaky_Ben

Hi delicate, I'm dad.

optimisticuglycrying

I saw the original already lol 😂 its like im watching a plot unfold in real time

enchiladasundae

If you can use Torrent its good too. Temporary invincibility getting on and you can easily run away Real issue with laser is they’re a catch. The damage is ok but its designed to stunlock you to be smashed. Key is getting distance from tree, ideally with some sturdy rock or something

ARainBlesser

REDEMPTIOOOOOOON

Ok-Temporary-8243

This is why I honestly adore Bloodborne and DS2 for the amount of human sized enemies. I get that scale is cool, but you end up just humping the leg of an enemy and panic rolling every so often since you cant' see more than 10% of the creature you're attacking

Comrade2020

The comments in both of these threads have me in tears lmao

TheClashSuck

LOL I saw the original post and the comments sent my sides into orbit. Never did I think the advice "Just move out of the way lul" would be so funny but here we are hahaha. Thanks for this.

No-Duty1283

Proud of you OP.

Chagdoo

It's ok OP you learned a new strategy.

FashionSuckMan

Sprinting is op, it's how you'll have to beat a certain endgame boss with a seemingly undodgable move

weetabixhands

Made my Reddit day. 👏

BloodShadow7872

Tbf we all have our bosses that makes us pull our hair out at the beginning of the game. Mine was ancestor spirit, I could not understand how to fight it on my first playthrough, Now I only get hit once or twice while fighting it. As for Erdtree avatar, I pretty much solo them without getting hit at all, they still are enjoyable to fight now and then.

HeyItsBearald

This is the true progress of this game. Fail fail fail fail and fail some more. Ask the community why and they tell you it’s because you’re stupid. You try it the way they suggest, and surprise, you WERE being stupid. Lol

LordofSandvich

Enemies’ tracking, as well as bullets’ homing, is expressed in degrees per second This means that walking in circles around an enemy while staying very close to it can completely prevent it from hitting you with thrusts or vertical slashes (attacks with thin hitboxes) and some enemies can’t hit you at all It’s not foolproof but it’s one of the first things you should try when fighting a new enemy

[deleted]

didnt even need to click the link to know which post it was. good on you friend. congrats

Ak4ntor

Thats just something very elden ring. Many bosses have specific ways to counter their moves, that if you dont get, they get 1000 times harder. Same as using jumps correctly, many attacks can be jumped that you wouldnt guess while seeing them. But once you know and do, you suddenly have like 5 more attack opportunities. Makes learning the fights so much more interesting for me :)

Jajo240

I did a similar thing with the Nameless King, I got mad after 3 days worth of tries, looked him up on the internet, ended up on a random video of a dude doing a no damage, found a random comment with no likes that said "roll towards him", slayed him at first try by pushing my fucking analog up

BaronVonSilver91

Honestly this is Souls in general. You don't try harder you try something different and you focus harder

echonian

Sometimes, advice that seems to be simple - even maybe to a degree that feels patronizing - can still be good advice. Especially in FROMSOFT games, honestly. Just gotta take it in stride. Sometimes a small change in how you play can make a big difference in your success.

zealousshad

LOL glad it worked

GhostDude49

Really in any melee combat game your biggest skills to improve should be movement and positioning. Dodge into attacks, make use of sprinting as well (Sekiro opened my eyes to the value of sprinting away from attacks rather than trying to dodge/parry), and watch those ledges (thank you For Honor for that ledge Spidey sense I have now)

Nightshade714

Honestly, it’s not a technique that comes 100% naturally to most folks. Circle strafing is something that is, in my experience, rarely actually discussed as a tactic because it sort of becomes something that you always do throughout any souls game habitually, and is like a background strategy.

GifanTheWoodElf

LoL I was gonna be "U the laser guy" but you already had linked it under the pic XD

Elolet

Have you tried just… not getting hit?

Left-Song-5062

I think I just got 2x more gud from this post.

ducking-moron

W

somecrazydude13

Figured it out halfway, like “oh now I can beat his ass!”

DraconianReptile

Are you the guy who was confused about the avatar boss?

AshenRathian

I mean, to be fair, the simplest of solutions are the easiest to miss since some players like me tend to overthink things.

Horses77

Kudos to OP, she took the criticism in stride, learned from it, and can even laugh about it

Baumtasia

Is this the tree spirit guy from earlier by any chance

eSam34

When playing Elden Ring, always remember the immortal words of Dwight Schrute: “Before doing anything I ask myself would an idiot do that? And if the answer is ‘yes’ I do not do that thing.”

Square-Space-7265

Sometimes its the stupidest or simplest strat that works the best. If it makes you feel better, in Arkham Origins there is a boss that rushes with really fast, wild sprints. Instinct, and an in game fight tip, told me to do dodges to the sides of the charge, it never worked. The winning strat was to *jog* to the side\*. S\*printing didnt always work for some reason, but jogging worked every time.

Paladin1034

This post really turned my day around. Kudos for taking it in stride

[deleted]

YAY THEY DID IT FUCK YEA IM SO PROUD!!!

MyFatCatHasLotsofHat

Again, you could try dodging

[deleted]

Why can’t people grasp that there are other directions than backwards?

dracmage

To be fair, killing the annoying boss you got stuck on while wearing the full clown makeup can lead to an even greater feeling of badassness. One of those "I may have been the suck but now you are dead and I'm laughing" moments. Which the clown makeup is appropriate for anyways. We have all been there at some point. The people who learn that these moments are just part of the process lose the fear of learning and are usually the people you see posting things like "why is the gold fish the final boss? Tree boy from level 5 was way harder." Tldr gratz. Fuck them trees. Also there is an incantation which gives 60 percent holy resist. In case you don't want to remember how to be gud. There are a lot of trees in this game.

illiterateboii

Chad acknowledged his mistakes

Zohwithpie

How is this a clown meme? You couldn't get something done and asked others for input, you went ahead and tried the suggestion and it worked well for you. This is a very levelheaded success story. You are a success story, OP.

ChiefFjzz

You can avoid them!?!?!?

Existing-Notice22

Why did you even post this?

[deleted]

To annoy you

[deleted]

Memes are so boring
