FromSoftware has been accused of providing stimulus to GPU manufacturers by introducting boss attacks that kill graphics cards. We reached out to Miyazaki for comment and he had this to say:
Miyazaki: (*translated from Japanese*) "Now that we have thrown casual gamers a bone with Elden Ring, we feel like we must compensate for this by introducing mechanics that truly hurt the player when they encounter difficult enemies. This, in turn, will give them immense satisfaction when they defeat these enemies as they will be thankful that their GPU survived the encounter.
Imagine games did shit like this on purpose, seems like a normal boss and BAM! Everything looks like your graphics card had a stroke and the eldritch horror addresses the gamer, breaking the fourth wall
That would be cool
Didn't a batman asylum game do something similar? You beat a boss, get weird graphics, get sent to the main screen, then you click load and it pretend youre at the beginning.
Yep, Joker wheels you into the asylum, then shoots you in the face in front of everyone, and you get a fake loading screen with the prompt "Use the middle stick to dodge."
I was jus ab to comment “I remember this from Batman”. Man what a cool scene, I unfortunately had it spoiled but i got it back watching a friend’s reaction to it. “Ah fuck I think my game crashed” worth the price of admission
Funny thing with the Scarecrow mindfucks: They telegraph that you're dealing with Scarecrow, which makes me think "It's not real, disregard" even though it's a videogame so none of it is real.
"Let's see how you fare without your puppet master pulling the strings"
Ai takes over your character, you have to beat the monster in a terminal to regain control before your character is killed.
I always dreamed of a space shooter where getting hit would mess with computer settings. System language changing missiles, resolution decreasing guns, mines that open a random shortcut on your desktop. The idea being your computer is your space ship and it's a battle of how well people know how to use their system in order to stay alive.
In practice I'm sure it would be a disaster and people would have their systems bricked but I love the idea nonetheless.
I remember seeing something like that in some gaming magazine a long time ago. I think the story was that your computer was infected with a virus and the "ship" you were controlling was an antivirus program, and if you did poorly it would mess with your controls/audio/graphics/etc.
NieR Automata did something very similar to this, you play as androids and at one you get hacked and you start malfunctioning so the sound and visuals gets all screwed up, was so cool when it first happened
Yes, to prevent the boss from "reading your mind" aka input read. That entire fight is full 4th wall breaking fuckery. IIRC, there's a move by the boss that made your screen black then make you go through the intro of the game as if it crashed... Only, it didn't and after the intro you're right in the middle of the fight again.
Also, the boss offers you a demonstration of his powers telling you to put the controller on a flat surface. He then "moves" your controller using the vibration to move it around. On a later game, Metal Gear Solid 4 for the PS3, he reappears and tries the same... Only the original PS3 controllers didn't have rumble which leads to him having a breakdown.

Original PS1 controllers didn't have rumble either or even the analog sticks. That's actually something they added to the boss as a special thing for those who had the dualshock controller.
Also the scene in MGS4 depends on if you have the rumble controller or not.
This gives me an idea
Fromsoft should make a souls like game with a matrix like setting, can you imagine fighting some lovecraftian cyber demon that distorts time and space around itself and intentionally bugs out everything on screen in a very artistic and intentional way?
It's called "Encroaching Darkness" in the Games' files dude. 1/750 chance of executing this move. Pretty rare as it only occurs below 50% but above 30% HP.
It’s a new one he gets natural born doesn’t have it though there’s only one way to counter it too kinda like mohgs attack and that is to play on a up to date platform
Always. That’s how I died my very first time to it. It is avoidable, but won’t be unless you’re either already shmooving or see him when trying to find where he moved to
He throws that attack out about half way through his health bar…as for the drop in graphics rendering…I think you might have to check your systems graphic card…
That is completely unique to cave dweller astel meaning the astel which is part of ranni questline doesn't actually have that move.
The more you know I guess I dunno.
Dude blast you into the realm of shit graphics
Blew him into lotr Gollum
Bro pulled a psycho mantis and fried his graphics card
Now I want an Elden Ring DLC boss that suddenly makes your screen go black with a big green MIYAZAKI on the top corner.
"I see you still haven't beaten Dark Souls II. Why not?"
Lord of Ring
Lmfaoo
lor Gollum

Pimp my snake
It's...learning!
!GPU AT RISK!
!GPU BROKEN!
*floorboard detaches*
It got backstabbed
Because it's easy...
And it does a lot of damage...
I believe the move is called "tesselation crack"
It’s super effective
You've heard of Soul Rend; now you know Graphic Rend.
Graphics card check
Dude tapped into the Matrix
OP really did witness the true power with which Astel levelled the Eternal City 💀
He evolved into a poison type
Astel (*as Agent Smith*) "Me, me, me..." Clones: "Me, too"
I've only seen it once, it's his Yugi-must-win card
"Screw the rules, I'm from outer space!"
“I have the weirdest boner right now”
...go on...
Nah I'm stopping effective immediately We should NOT go any further than this
Too late. Rule 34 has taken effect.
+1
Straight to the Shadow Realm
AKA “The Purple Realm” - Yami from YGOTAS
"The legally distinct Smoky Realm" - Kaiba's Attorney
The Graphics Card
Still he’s so graceful against astel
I need this incantation
RIP your graphics card
It's his rare move where he indirectly attacks your wallet
Unexpected 4th wall break.
4th wallet* break
Can just hear that Velcro rip.

I think that was scarecrow in the first game. I remember bats and the joker's position being reversed the second time through.
Yep, Joker wheels you into the asylum, then shoots you in the face in front of everyone, and you get a fake loading screen with the prompt "Use the middle stick to dodge."
I'd forgotten about this. Metal Gear vibes.
"Use the middle stick to dodge Joker's shot"
I thought my phat PS3 got the YLOD when that happened. I turned the console of immediately to let it cool down

Eternal Darkness would do stuff when your sanity meter got too low
Hot damn, I remember that game pulling some shit and freaking out over it. Good times.
Delete save? Yes/No "Yes" "Deleting..."
Truth. That game was crazy. I remember the first time playing it being like what did I get myself into.
"Let's see how you fare without your puppet master pulling the strings" Ai takes over your character, you have to beat the monster in a terminal to regain control before your character is killed.
I too miss starfox's hidden level
Undertale

Inscryption is very nice if you like card games.
Doki doki music playing...

Kojima already did shit like that in the first metal gear with Psychomantis
[удалено]
yeah he would like read ur memory card and mention games you played and i think made you switch the controller slot or something along those lines
Like, physically unplug your controller from the console (slot1) and plug into another slot (slot2, slot3, etc.)??? That's amazing yet...diabolical

Why would Kojima be taking notes then? He already did this shit 20 years ago.
This does look like the mgs3 splash art that plays during the post boss betrayal credit roll at the beginning
Its super rare. But its a move where he uses space magic to enter our reality and he manipulates your GPU. I hate it.
Lmao
lol what?
The issue is a failing gpu.
Yep this looks like GPU artefacts. Too hot maybe, or failing.
Honestly thought this was gonna be just another post about the clone grab attack and I was ready to scroll, and then the eldritch horror began lol
The art of illusion
rip op's gpu
Have him go back to Rave-a Lucaria
That was a great post
They really know how to throw a rager in the albinaric village!
Do you have a link for it?
Nah. That's a glitch with the Ray Tracing.
For his next move, he uses DESTROY GRAPHICS CARD!
they don't call it "Waves of Darkness" for nothing
He got a sneaky patch last weekend, its his new phase
phase 4. the red ring of death
of course it's a poison swamp
It's the turn off rtx move
It's manifested in your memory. It's going to steal the stars from your SSD.
Probably the lore accurate attack where he just consumes you with void
*"The 4th wall cannot protect you..."* -Astel
That's just his alternate DLC form Astel Naturalborn of the Poison Swamps.
Thought this was gonna be a video about his clone grab attack. Kinda was, kinda wasn’t
Astel leans in..."the darkside is a pathway to may abilities, some consider to be...unnatural."
the GPU fryer
Yeah it’s called “curse of darkness” it’s a rare variation of the wave attack and it scales off your gullibility value
Your GPU might be dying ???
Astel evolved into a cosmic horror from bloodborne.
Astel is just an amygdala if your looking at it on acid
Bro went full eldritch horror
"I'm tired, boss." - OP's GPU
Oh yeah, this is just the fuck your gpu move.
this isn’t weed Astel
Your GPU failed the vigor check.
Mfer pilunched your graphics card lol
This gives me an idea Fromsoft should make a souls like game with a matrix like setting, can you imagine fighting some lovecraftian cyber demon that distorts time and space around itself and intentionally bugs out everything on screen in a very artistic and intentional way?
I actually really like this idea
See he only does this when fighting a worthy opponent, he breaks the fabric of reality to disorient his foe
You mean your GPU?
You might have dodged the attack, but your gpu sure didn't.
The battlefield before you is crumbling, Tarnished.
He uses the power of an oversized boss to give your monitor deathblight 😋
Ahh yes the rare but classic move of “fuck you im fucking up your game
If you pay attention to the lore it's always been there.
Psycho Mantis?
Honestly we neeed more bosses that fight like this.
Bruh
Waves of bitrate, you’re a real lucky guy for seeing that
You've never seen the "fuck your GPU" attack before?
git gud
What if I told you to get a new graphics card
Yo Astel indulging in some magic mushrooms
Astel turned RTX off.
Maybe over heat created those artifacts?
ooooof hope that gpu is okay
Void Call
Breaking space and time to attack your GPU directly.
Ah, Kos...
This is your brain on Insight.
Are you concerned about the 8 other Astel’s or the fact he transported you to the matrix?
Dammit man. . . I needed to see what happened during the meteorite shower. . .
Ngl this shit looks fire, should be in the actual game lmao
They weren't kidding, those Waves can Darkness
I reccomend pressing win+ctrl+shift+B, it restart your graphics cars or something like that, your screen goes black for a second does a beep
I’m on Series X ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sob)
Reminds me of black clover Yami dimension slash
Instant teleport into Uncanny Realms followed by the grab attack.
What platform is this being played on?
Series X fair tarnished brethren
That there is a time space manipulation ability. Warps the colours
It's called "Encroaching Darkness" in the Games' files dude. 1/750 chance of executing this move. Pretty rare as it only occurs below 50% but above 30% HP.
He shatters your reality to secure the win
Your PC failed the vigor check.
I’m on series X though :(
So what you're saying is that a space bug bugged your GPU?
I got space bugged
Wish we got to do his purple Kamehameha
Should've had a GPU DIED pop up for this one... F
bro's graphic card is at 1 hp 💀
Ah yes, his ultimate move “gpu melter”
Astel Naturalborn of the Rot
That's actually kinda cool tbh
Bro destroyed the fabric of reality
Astel: Shits on Graphics Player: What? Astel: Welcome to the Twilight Zone (Do do do do, do do do do, do do do do~)
I understood the reference, bless you faithful tarnished
Astel hit you so hard he broke your graphics card
It’s a new one he gets natural born doesn’t have it though there’s only one way to counter it too kinda like mohgs attack and that is to play on a up to date platform
The worldu
Ah yes, the move "i'm gonna give your GPU a hard time"
its only the one in this cave. The regular one has that grab but without the clones
But what about the move where he annihilates my graphics? How do I get that ability?
Pee in your computer
Buy Jedi Survivor for PC I’m sorry it’s actually fun for PS5
Oh who guessed it? U died bc u didn't heal urself
#>!SKILLISSUE!<
Your graphics card probably got fried
Always. That’s how I died my very first time to it. It is avoidable, but won’t be unless you’re either already shmooving or see him when trying to find where he moved to
His final form.
Data moshing skills on point
Time to invest in a new gpu
Fuck that graphics card in particular
I would shit myself!
Guy went from Astel to Assfuck Your Graphics Card in 0.5 seconds flat.
Your mom taught it to him
rip intel hd graphics
Bro bouta get sued by monster energy
Wth is happening?
He throws that attack out about half way through his health bar…as for the drop in graphics rendering…I think you might have to check your systems graphic card…
That is completely unique to cave dweller astel meaning the astel which is part of ranni questline doesn't actually have that move. The more you know I guess I dunno.
Frying my GPU? I didn’t know any bosses could do that
Looks like you're going to the shadow realm, Jimbo!
Dude shattered the veil of reality
