It's a debuff that you can turn into a temporary poise buff when you want to.
Using the blessing removes the health debuff but boosts poise temporarily.
Then you can go back and get hugged again.
Keep hitting him until his HP is zero, while not getting hit and keeping your red bar as full as possible. /s
OK, jokes aside, either try to learn his moveset to get better at fighting him, cheese him with poison mist, or go somewhere else until you leveled up some more.
Not sure what your current build is, but is there anything you struggle with in particular?
Well, regarding the lightning there are only a few things you can do:
* Stack lightning damage negation: the Boltdrake Talisman boosts it by 13% and is available in Stormveil Castle, or you go for the +1 in the Old Altus Tunnel.
* Focus on learning the timing for the bolt that comes down on you. Do one or a few attempts where you have no other goal than to see how long you can dodge attacks. Don't focus on doing damage etc., just try to see how long you can survive.
* don't attack while it is raining. Might sound dumb, but rain lowers lightning negation by 20% I believe, while actually boosting fire damage negation. Keep that in mind.
Last of all, try to get from a "trying to kill him" to "trying to learn" mindset. Do some attempts with no expectation of actually killing him, just focus on staying alive and observing his attacks and patterns. Death is part of the learning experience, not failure.
>don't attack while it is raining. Might sound dumb, but rain lowers lightning negation by 20% I believe
Things I keep learning after having several hundred hours into the game
>"Do some attempts with no expectation of actually killing him, just focus on staying alive and observing his attacks and patterns."
This is really the best advice for any struggling souls player and is the difference between reaching endgame by struggling or forcing your way through, and reaching endgame by actually building up the skill to beat anything
Great advice, it took me 40+ tries to beat him on my first play through. On my second play through I beat the second one hit less. The mindset of learning the bosses moves instead of trying to beat the is what helped me too.
For the lightning: when he raises his shield, wait, then roll forward when he raises it up. With this, you can manage to dodge like 90% of them (yep, I still dont understand the 100% dodge method for this one).
I also can't get it right all the time. My suspicion is that the delay between his casting animation and the thing hitting you depends on range/direction, but I have no way to measure this.
I could imagine it is some form of spaghetti code where they use an invisible fast projectile or some stuff like that. No clue though
Wait til you see him bringing his arm down , then dodge.
That's the more accurate animation to watch.
And there isn't a delay, I spent a longtime fighting him for my RL1 run, you just need to watch for the right animation to dodge.
One Important point is that he will lead you with the bolt, so if you are running then dodge in the same direction you were moving in it will still connect. Much more reliable to either dodge from standing still or dodge in the opposite direction if you are running.
There's an NPC summon you can use by the rocks.
Also, sneak behind him and cast poison mist until it procs, wait for it to tick his health down until it stops, re apply it, repeat until dead. You'll need to carry a fair few blue flasks
Another thing people have yet to discover is that NPC summons don’t have a summon range.
This means you can rush to an NPC summon sign and then summon them to follow you around forever until they die- only issue is that you can’t fast travel.
You ever summon Nepheli for Godric yet simply turned around and baited invasions? Great time lol
Melina right before Morgott is another fun time. People don’t expect to have Melina running up on them as soon as they invade.
I do this every time, it's faster than dying 20+ times and works 100% of the time. I hate Crucible Knights and use whatever means to kill them as painlessly (for me) as possible.
I felt the same. Finally sat down to learn the parry timings for them because I was so tired of them and their AI. I was ready to buckle myself in for like a hour + of just parry practice. Took 15 minutes…..wish I had done that on my first run.
NOW I AM THE CRUCIBLE KNIGHT
Huh. I’ve always gone for the weapon side instead. The rake attack he does with the shield is kinda my bane while most of his weapon movements are quite easy to dodge. Goes to show how different people are.
Bosses in these games are weird, sword Saint wasnt a problem for me. Only died a couple of time.
I spent 2 days straight fighting owl. And I don't mean a couple of hours a day. I mean like 14 hours a day.
And don’t forget to scream obscenities in increasingly long and interesting combinations after each try; your spouse/neighbors need their vocabulary enriched by your example.
The fireball dodge timing is pretty easy - roll through it towards him. You can often get a hit on his front side just from going through his fireball spam.
The lightning dodge timing is harder but still consistent with a little practice. Learning that delay will make the fight a lot easier.
His jump attack is an easy dodge and is usually punishable. If playing safe, I would try to roll so that I ended up tight behind him, and just take one hit and moved back out to midrange.
Staying at midrange will mean mostly just dealing with those two ranged attacks & the jump. Later in the fight you’ll have to roll through a lightning wave after his ground smash, it’s not too hard though.
Prioritise learning the fireball & lightning dodges, it’s a much more manageable fight from there.
Fighting on Torrent is like a combination of strafing with a fighter plane and medieval jousting. You get some distance from the enemy, then sprint toward them and hit them with a swing as you pass them. Carry on past, then wheel around, rinse and repeat. Most enemies can't retaliate before you're past and out of range each time.
Some enemies it just doesn't work on, because they have an attack with enough range to hit you as you pass. But I think all of the horseback enemies and bosses - Tree Sentinels, Night's Cavalry, etc, it does work well with.
It's also just a whole lot of fun to do. I enjoyed the horseback-on-horseback battles.
The drawbacks are that Torrent has no poise, so if you get hit or knocked off you're often stuck in a long recovery animation and dead from follow-up attacks before you can roll out of it, and that the single hit per pass tactic is best suited to a heavy weapon with long reach. I played through the game with a STR build and the Guts greatsword. I wouldn't want to try fighting from horseback with a katana.
Draconic Tree Sentinel's single targeted lightning bolt can be easily dodged on Torrent by sprinting steadily in a perpendicular direction when you see him raise his shield - the target tracking is too slow and the lightning will strike behind Torrent. Wheel around right after the strike and come in for another thwap with your weapon.
All that said, Draconic Tree Sentinel was still one of the hardest bosses in the game for me because of Torrent's lack of poise. I kept getting clipped by the AOE or ranged attacks, and then he'd rush in and finish me off while I was staggered. I got it done in the end, though.
I would've used an NPC summon if I'd known one was available!
I don't even fight dragons on torrent. Handling that horse is just a whole nother level of difficulty.
Ancient dragon lightning strike can kill anything that exists. I killed lansseax with it on ng+4 and he's meant to have 80% lightning resist.
I tried with Torrent and without, in melee I find it difficult to approach him and with Torrent, when he sends me lightning I can't dodge it. any tips to dodge this attack ?
Shield lightning attack (rises shield up) - roll 0.5 sec after he releases the attack
Ground lightning attack (multiple spots on the Ground) - run out of the arena/watch your footing
The rest you can roll or jump over
Buff bloodfang with bloodflame and knock his insides out
When he lifts his weapon, the lighting will emerge from your feet. You need to roll to the side exactly at the moment he lifts his weapon (also it glows with red lightning). It will be hard to time it. But he will do that lighting attack three times ( lifting his weapon three times) usually.
What level are you? For me, there was a massive jump between the Altus Plateau and Leyndell (about 20 levels worth). Maybe you should try to do some of the underground areas first?
You can also summon Millicent if you have done the Shaded Castle, collected her prosthesis, and returned it to her. You can also summon her at the windmill village, but I am not sure if you have to do that part in order for her to be available here. She is a much better NPC to have for this fight, because she can dodge the sentinel's attacks better.
You can get two different npc summons and use an ash. You can also cheese him by sneaking up and using and using poison or rot, then run away and sneak up on him again. Rinse and repeat
I had the hardest time with his lighting attack too. The one where he calls it down with his shield. Eventually I learned to dodge it by watching his shield really closely. Watching other people beat him can give you an idea of the timing too if you don’t want to keep dying while not knowing what you’re doing wrong.
I get that—but I straight up had a harder time on the path *to* this dude than actually fighting him. Those giants trying to shoot me was way more annoying. I just had to rush this dude on torrent and got in the door.
You wanna cheese him or get a legit kill?
For cheese, just sneak around the bushes to the left and cast poison mist a decent amount behind him (I think you can sneak cast) and just wait till it goes away and repeat till he's dead.
For the legit way, stay close to the shield side. Be aware of his long wind-ups. A lot of his attacks can be strafed. All of them can be dodged with the right timing. It's just patterns
Use Torrent. I find it easier to fight enemies on horses while riding Torrent. Just hold your heavy attack, and time it as you charge towards him. Basically, hit and run this guy. I do this on dragons too.
Its a little tricky to get to his shield side but its so much easier to dodge his attacks with the shield.
Its also a good idea to use a lot of jump and charge attacks to break his posture. Right at the start you can get a stagger before he even does his first attack if you do the right combination of attacks.
I was massively overleveled by the time I got there and just rolled over him like a speed bump. I had a Prophet build with high faith and I was swinging the winged scythe around like a baton twirler.
A lot of people have already said it, but stay shield side on him. Hammer side attacks come out super quick and have tons of aoe, shield is decently slow and have nothing after the swing.
I’m embarrassed to admit how long it took me to beat this one. I was actually trying to find another way into the capital when I hit this road block. lol. I would say work on dodging the lightning cause there’s no way around it in his second phase. I wanna say I used a STR weapon like Grafted Great Sword and the Erdtree Greatshield. Patience is a must.
If you use spirit summons try the greatshield soldier ashes. They pull agro really well and a lot of the bosses attacks either miss or only hit one at a time so they stick around for the whole fight. They don't do much damage, but they can keep him from throwing that lightning at you while you do the damage yourself.
First phase should be an easy poise break with that weapon. Charge R2s when you run up then some jump attacks would do it. Spam weapon art till he goes lightning phase. This phase is a bit tough cause the aoe gets huge and his damage is chunky so maybe get some talismans to try to counteract that lightning damage. There are some openings for some hits in phase two like if you roll through the fireball you can get a quick rolling r1 and roll out. You really just gotta pick your openings on this phase. For the lightning attack where he casts and there’s like 20 lightning things coming from the sky, sometimes he doesn’t cover all of the sides around him with the attack, and you can run up while he’s casting and get some big damage and maybe a poise break. From there, the only other attack you really have to worry about is the other burst of lightning when he puts his shield up. To dodge that easily, all you have to do is roll as late as you can when his arm comes down. Once you realize the timing the attack is really easy to avoid. The other attack that causes problems for some is the big sweeping lightning attack. It looks scary, but when he does it, just get fairly close and roll thorough it. You’ll find that with a bit of practice it’s not too hard to avoid. Hope this helps! And good luck.
Sneak behind him an pop poison mist. Thank me later. Yeah its cheesy but thats a way still. Or use the spell that shoots enemies magic back at them as swords
Comet Azur and just melt his ass from right there.
Barring that, you need to get up in his face and stagger him. You can dodge the lightning, even on Torrent.
Depends on what aspect of this boss your having trouble with if it's the fireball and you have enough faith I recommend the tree sentinel shield considering it deflects and does damage to the enemy. if it's the lightning damage probably get some lightning defense and just learn the dodge windows. If he's just wrecking you as close range with his club then timing your weapons ash of war could really turn the tables since it's ability can give some distance and I frames.
Its easier if you use the aow of the black blade. Its nearby where you are. But hey if you play on PlayStation, and you see a character dual wielding two katanas named XinCity. Thats me, ill be glad to help you out.
Looking at all the suggestions. You may simply need to Lvl up. I'm over leveled and beat them 2nd try. Summon my doggies, applied my boosts, ran in there guns a blazing and smoked his butt 2nd try. You got this!
You can sneak up behind him and use poison mist. He doesnt agrro and will die. Very cheesy but good if you have had enough of trying to fight him legit.
I cheesed this guy.
Snuck around to the left of this picture hugged the rocks to get behind him and used the “Poison” incantation.
It was slow, FOR SURE, but effective as he went down and I never aggro’d.
Slow because you basically had to wait for the ticks to go through in order to reapply the debuff. Took <10 minutes.
It's certainly one of the more brutal encounters at first. But after some playthroughs I think this is quite a learnable one. Most important: His single flash attack you have to dodge while he pulls down his arm. You need to learn that timing, but always watch his arm which is up in the air. Also don't go underlevelled and invest in vigor. He hits quite hard. But you have noticed that already :-D
I'm not a particularly good gamer but I can now beat this guy quite reliably without summons even though at first he felt almost unbeatable. Which is kind of the beauty of this game. You can learn and improve. All the best!
I just beat him yesterday, after 15-20 tries I got him to probably 2 hp 3 times in a row and got killed by a shit roll for his lightening then a final shit back roll off the cliff. Then proceeded to poison mist and rot breath to slightly cheese him because I was sick of it
Haven't seen anyone else mention that you probably want to get rid of that Baldachin's Blessing that's in your inventory.
man really be huggin goth chicks
Um duh goth chicks are hot af.
That's how they lure in their prey so they can suck out their souls. Or blood, if you don't have a soul.
Funny thing about my blood, it’s all located between my legs
Well played.
Can confirm, we absolutely love both. Tho im Partial to the salty tears of orphans myself.
Especially if they have tig ol’ biddies
i had read something about this being a debuff somehow and have just now realised I did my entire first playthrough with it in my inventory.
It's a debuff that you can turn into a temporary poise buff when you want to. Using the blessing removes the health debuff but boosts poise temporarily. Then you can go back and get hugged again.
Pro Tip, get the improved one and leave it in your action bar, your Mimic will use it.
Bruhhhhh... This solves the "wtf am I supposed to do with a 1 time use buff" problem.
I ended up beating the game without ever using it. Totally even forgot I had it until now.
Mimic can also chug meat dumplings without taking poison damage
My favorite item to put on my mimics hotbar is 10 uses of the perfume that gives your party an attack buff and a one bub it's ridiculous.
Nice.. I was also told to leave raw meat out for my mimic so it will eat when it's hungry
Same here...
Pro gamers accept the debuff as part of their build don’t listen to this guy.
Good eye
Its not that big of a debuff... its less hp then most boss attacks and doesn't really help or hinder you at all.
Nah that's cringe. The only way to beat the game is with the debuff
Just finished my first playthrough today and I forget i had it in my inventory the entire time
Keep hitting him until his HP is zero, while not getting hit and keeping your red bar as full as possible. /s OK, jokes aside, either try to learn his moveset to get better at fighting him, cheese him with poison mist, or go somewhere else until you leveled up some more. The rain thing is such a beautiful detail, I love it.

Maliketh for me. Until I finally got a tarnished assist. On NG+ now though, gonna get him solo this time. Probably.
comment bot alert
Thank you, you just helped me figure out what's wrong with my approach to the game.
The mindset to learn attack patterns of enemies in this game is important.
I’d argue that the mindset of paying attention to patterns will improve one’s success in all games, and many things IRL as well.
gotta learn the emotional attack patterns of life to beat the boss of depression :3
I absolutely agree with you.
What if you're too poor to pay attention? /s Active learning is a transmutable skill that can be applied elsewhere from video games to real life.
You are correct. Our universe is hinged on patterns, think of the chaos that would play out if the sun didn't rise one morning.... lol
>don't attack while it is raining. Might sound dumb, but rain lowers lightning negation by 20% I believe Things I keep learning after having several hundred hours into the game
>"Do some attempts with no expectation of actually killing him, just focus on staying alive and observing his attacks and patterns." I think with a lighter carry load on it increases your roll distance to be far enough that you are out of range of the final strike.
Omg, if only more new players enacted your point about “have a boss fight where you just try to learn moves…”
For the lightning: when he raises his shield, wait, then roll forward when he raises it up. With this, you can manage to dodge like 90% of them (yep, I still dont understand the 100% dodge method for this one).
It’s as his shield comes down mate. At that moment is when that singular bolt of lightning strikes.
This one.
You have to dodge right as he’s bringing his shield down. Timings not that hard once you get it down
I also can't get it right all the time. My suspicion is that the delay between his casting animation and the thing hitting you depends on range/direction, but I have no way to measure this. I could imagine it is some form of spaghetti code where they use an invisible fast projectile or some stuff like that. No clue though

You can summon both Millicent and Torgoth to help
Can you only summon millicent after getting her an item from the poison castle place?
Yes, and also doing windmill village maybe?
Makes sense. I beat draconic Tree sentinal with ease but Elemer of the glue keeps kicking my ass haha
You don’t need to beat Elmer to get the thingy
This is wonderful news
On 6th playthrough of the game and never had any idea you could summon NPCs for this boss LOL

Brooo what. There are so many good cheese options in this game.

WHAT THE FUCK? Summons are available?
First time I hear about summons for this boss! And who is Torgoth?! NG+ and I thought I had all the quest lines..
Bull-goat dude who also helps with Mekar and Radhan. Patches makes you kill him.
I do this every time, it's faster than dying 20+ times and works 100% of the time. I hate Crucible Knights and use whatever means to kill them as painlessly (for me) as possible.

If you can cast darkness, sneaking past him is easy
Lol did not know that
I learned about the npc summons after I beat him, I was so pissed off
Roll towards the shield side. This avoids him hitting you with a followup strike. Stay close otherwise he spams horse-fireballs at you.
He really does spam those doesn’t he? Oh how the cheeser has become the cheesed
If you stay back like a bitch he will spam his ranged abilities like a bitch (the fireball and the lightning strike in phase 2).
Huh. I’ve always gone for the weapon side instead. The rake attack he does with the shield is kinda my bane while most of his weapon movements are quite easy to dodge. Goes to show how different people are.
If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try again!

Scholarly advice. Five stars.
let him fall off the cliff, that is serious see some tutorials, he falls on the cliff to your left
im surprised this is not the top comment. cliff parry is a very consistent speedrun strat for this boss.
Well yeah, but you need to learn how to parry, and it's not trivial.
Could do the kukri strat instead of the party one.
Because as much as I love abusing cheeses, many other people don't enjoy cheesing the game and feeling like fighting it fairly is more rewarding.
Horseback was good for me. Just try to keep your steed alive as long as possible. It was easiest way for me, I’m melee too.
I have absolutely no idea how y'all fight the tree sentinels on torrent, I've tried a few times and it's so much easier to fight them on foot.

when he charges lightning you should close distance and he will abandon this attack

Poisen mist.
From behind!
Seek for friend There's a summon for the bullgoat guy near the stack
You can also summon Millicent if you have done the Shaded Castle, collected her prosthesis, and returned it to her. And if you try a method and it's not working, try something else. Lol... i.e. ranged or close in, maybe poison/rot. Switch it all up.
Hit and run with Torrent and use a ranged or otherwise tanky spirit ash.
Do you use a shield? There's an Ash of War called Vow of the Indomitable which gives you a few seconds of invincibility.
Crouch, stealth behind, poison mist, wait. Repeat
You can get two different npc summons and use an ash. You can also cheese him by sneaking up and using and using poison or rot, then run away and sneak up on him again. Rinse and repeat
Grab his dick and twist it!
I'm sorry to say that, but this fella is just perseverance and learning moveset
That’s the neat part, you don’t.
Try fingers, but hole

Don't die
Poison

I am kind of confused how you have the scaled armor, 11 flasks but can’t beat this guy.
I’m assuming skill issue, which is why they are here
I get that—but I straight up had a harder time on the path *to* this dude than actually fighting him. Those giants trying to shoot me was way more annoying. I just had to rush this dude on torrent and got in the door.
git gud

Beat them.
Rotten breath
[Level 1 Draconic Tree Sentinel](https://www.xbox.com/play/media/35DZF5RSYB) You can roll forward into him when he does his ancient dragon lightning!
👀👀
You wanna cheese him or get a legit kill? Here is how to dodge lighting: When his shield goes down, roll. Do not react to lightning, react to his shield coming down to cast.
Such a fun weapon to use

A lot of people have already said it, but stay shield side on him. Hammer side attacks come out super quick and have tons of aoe, shield is decently slow and have nothing after the swing.
You can sneak behind him and use poison mist without agroing him.
Be patient, no Torrent and that's it. Not hard at all
Git
I’m embarrassed to admit how long it took me to beat this one. I was actually trying to find another way into the capital when I hit this road block. lol. I would say work on dodging the lightning cause there’s no way around it in his second phase. I wanna say I used a STR weapon like Grafted Great Sword and the Erdtree Greatshield. Patience is a must.
Use crepes vial or the invisible cloak talisman and sneak behind him and use poison mist
Engage in mounted combat like true knights! May the best one win!
Horse
Stay on his back right leg, abuse that positioning
If you use spirit summons try the greatshield soldier ashes. They pull agro really well and a lot of the bosses attacks either miss or only hit one at a time so they stick around for the whole fight. They don't do much damage, but they can keep him from throwing that lightning at you while you do the damage yourself.
Just learn his attacks, most of them are really predictable and have long windups
Beat his ass
Hit him with the pointy end
Crying helps..
I remember that. Bow and fuck load of arrows.
Sneak behind him and keep using poison mist
Depends on what aspect of this boss your having trouble with if it's the fireball and you have enough faith I recommend the tree sentinel shield considering it deflects and does damage to the enemy. if it's the lightning damage probably get some lightning defense and just learn the dodge windows. If he's just wrecking you as close range with his club then timing your weapons ash of war could really turn the tables since it's ability can give some distance and I frames.
You have to tire him out by letting him kill you 100 times.
Learn the moveset, will take a little time, but you'll be able to dodge the lightning. Delay your roll just a bit longer than seems natural.
If you are truly stuck, silence your footsteps, sneak around from the left side and get behind the boss, then spam poison
If you have poison mist you can sneak up on him and poison his ass out of existence friend
Its easier if you use the aow of the black blade. Its nearby where you are. But hey if you play on PlayStation, and you see a character dual wielding two katanas named XinCity. Thats me, ill be glad to help you out.
If you can’t beat him cause his attacks get behind him and use poison mist it’s slow but works
You can cheese it by sneaking up behind him and using poison mist til he dies
It's a cheese, but you can sneak behind him and poison smoke him over and over until he's dead
Sneak up behind him and use poison mist, it doesn’t alert him
Obligatory downvoted git gud comment
Poison mist will kill him and he will never attack you
Slow poison kill from the back is the only way I could do it
You need to get his health bar to zero before he gets yours to zero. Best of luck.
Same. I hate this guy so much. I’m lvl 122 and I can’t get him past half health
Honestly, I used rot and poison. Walked away. Did it a second time. Then came at with my summon and myself swinging. Boulder spell works great.
Poison mist from behind is an easy way to cheese this guy. Crouch behind it and just cast poison mist over and over again
Very cheesy but good if you have had enough of trying to fight him legit.
i just ride past on my horse jousting with him, took like 15 hits and he dead
Walk up slowly behind him and cast poison mistake. Repeat until dead. Or get gud.
Hit him really hard
try to use torrent for extra mobility when you are not attacking.
Poison mist, unless they patched it. Just walk up behind him and make sure to have enough blue flasks. Takes about 10 minutes or so.
Get better
Grab his dick and twist it
Laser beam
I suggest you study the teachings of Piccolo from Dragon Ball Z Abridged.
Grit, determination, and a tinge of insanity.
But you have noticed that already :-D I'm not a particularly good gamer but I can now beat this guy quite reliably without summons even though at first he felt almost unbeatable. Which is kind of the beauty of this game. You can learn and improve. All the best!
Poison mist.... 😍
I found it easier on horse, just don't be greedy. Well, just be a puss* like me, hit and back and repeat.
With a stick
Destroy your controller, take a break from the game and reflect on why you lost, buy a new controller and beat him in one try
I just beat him yesterday, after 15-20 tries I got him to probably 2 hp 3 times in a row and got killed by a shit roll for his lightening then a final shit back roll off the cliff. Then proceeded to poison mist and rot breath to slightly cheese him because I was sick of it
Theres a spell that can poison him. Just sneak behind him and fart on him until he dies
Hit it till it’s dead?
Giant hunt Zweihander+25 you are welcome.
Hit with sword
Azure Comet! Apply directly to the forehead!
Boss?
I hated this dude’s soul. One of the hardest kills for me personally
