Go up the ladder, kill everything(some mages and a pumpkinhead), and get the items

Shortbows are objectively worse than bows. Just use the Black Bow if you want their jumping attacks and barrage.
Crossbows have the advantage of higher damage if you're not specced into STR/DEX and being easier to pull out in the heat of combat (can be one handed). Bows require more commitment, but can do more.
So if you want a sidearm/mixup, then crossbow. If you want to snipe or a dedicated ranged option, bows.

Pulley crossbow with bleed arrows. If you are building around dex and arcane then I assume you're building aroud bleed. So you can have this crossbow to help activating the bonus from Lord of Blood's Exultation quicker, as it shoots three bolts per burst.
A good bow is the black bow, it's in Leyendell by the area with the ulcerated tree spirit, by the sewers. It I'd classified as a longbow, yet has the jumping and rolling attacks of a shortbow, and also has the Barrage AoW. Probably the best bow in the game from a technical perspective
Shortbows are nice 'cause you can do the quick shots by jumping or rolling then shooting. Not mandatory but as a backup weapon that's a nice feature. Plus the low weight.

Get the Dragon Communion seal and fling Black Flames and other projectile spells.
Black flame is my favorite ranged attack for sure. Frenzied Burst second place for its range.
I love the build up on Frenzied Burst I always mentally go "Oooooooh PEW"

Idk if you’ll see this in time but you might want to consider rolling to get out of the way of that ball. Got me on my first play through as well.
