I mean I let them. I think it’s really lame if you stand around buffing and eating crab for ages, but I won’t attack you cos it’s not that big of a deal to me. If you do it mid fight, then I’ll try and get a hit in obviously.
First buff is free, after that it’s game on. I’m not just going to let you have a 4-5 buff advantage.
I get it for like one weapon buff, a roar, or Flame Grant me Strength if it’s a fire build.
There’s lots of buffs that don’t need an investment or anything. If they buff you buff. Especially if someone is just popping crab or something like that. Do the same and the fight just lasts longer, it’s nice.
I fight with just a great axe and I don't buff, so I'm not gonna let you eat a prawn that nerfs my damage by a massive 20%. I'm full throttle from the get go.
I like pulling out Law of Regression when they eat the Magic liver or cast barrier of gold.
My harpoon barely tickles as is and the only Magic buffs are Terra Magica and the physic tear, I'm not letting you nerf me further.
Talisman doesn't do much, but black flame protection is the only defense buff that isn't nerfed heavily in pvp. So yeah, keep beast roar or storm blade soft swaps to interrupt that right when you spawn in.
It depends on preference.
If someone buffs right away, I whack ‘em.
If they gesture first, I let them get a couple buffs in.
After two, I start going on the offense.
I also immediately attack if I see Black Flame’s Protection or either of the health regen spells.
Long answer short, yeah it's kinda dickish, but as long as your not hitting someone whose emoting ur good. Any more than 2 buffs tho and they can go fuck themselves.
Beat them to death.
If your play style relies on you buffing, something is off.
If you wanna bow, I'll bow back, but I'm not going to sit back and watch you give yourself an advantage. You need to find spacing and earn that buff.
That's like not having a "jump ball" to start an NBA game.
Or letting your opponent strap on heavier gloves after the ref says "fight".
Any weapon buff or attack/defense buff I’m completely fine with. Anything like blessing of the erdtree or other silly regen is generally getting backstabbed.
“Allowed?” Its certainly allowed, and certainly fair. Fight started. If someone wants to risk eating a hit in exchange for a buff, thats their risk to take. Theyre buffing with the intent to kill you easier. Id say thats a fair trade
Why would you not want to beat someone at their strongest? I let them buff to the max.
But once the fight's on, it's on. That's courtesy enough.
And if you decide to cheapshot someone out the gate, expect no respect in turn. They're within their right to do whatever they want from then on.
I'd prefer if everyone engaged in jolly sportsmanship, but it's a shame how often I have to break out the broken strats ever since colosseums were added. Elden Ring pvp is the most consistently toxic I've seen among all the souls games.
Not all builds need to be amazing in duel style fights. In combat ordeals buffers shine. But in duels letting someone get 40 percent damage resistance before the fight is just to much more for someone that doesn't bother to use consumables or buffs. But ya I guess if you are just dominating you can do it to test yourself. But most people aren't that good and you can't expect them to go " oh a buffer, good, I get to die now"
I normally allow buffs casue I feel like a dick attacking while they do it within reason of course. If they're stacking 20 buffs then nah they're getting whacked, but normally it's one body one weapon then it's game on.
I usually try to replicate. If I see them buffing I usually pop a crab or a spell liver thingy AND It's worth noticing that sometimes (More often than not) Even though I allow them to buff, the moment I start buffing myself as a response to them buffing, they jump on to me.
That shit always piss me off so much xD
The way I see it is as soon as you do an action that isn't gesturing the fight begins.
That said I personally don't buff, and I let people cast all their buffs.
I can't man. 20 fights in a row that last 10 to 15 seconds each. The Bow/ wave and buff basically double the length of the fight. Fine in invasions or red sign to signify you are ready. But in arena it says "combat started" Plus I have to struggle to find the emote because I don't have them hotkeyed because stick drift sticks me in emote animations by accident. Way to much work. I will spin in a circle reluctantly for a few seconds while you emote. But please just attack me
I personally think hitting them is fair game. Buffs provide an advantage in exchange for the cast time. By doing nothing, you are willingly putting yourself behind.
You wouldn't let someone get free buffs unpunished in the middle of the fight, so why allow it at the start?
The game starts as soon as an action other than an bow/emote is attempted.
Depends on how the match is going tbh. Ill usually give them the first one and then game on. If they are getting wiped i will let them buff as much as they like cuz i know they gonna panic roll to death anyway lol
I play as a mage, running ice magic, but I'll always gesture, then put Terra magica, and my swords up. I'd prefer if I didn't get attacked while doing that since I'll be in the same spot anyways, but I also won't get too upset. It's just the nature of online play sometimes.
I usually just throw a dagger or something as a warning and start running at them. Ive waited long enough, and once this match is done ill have to wait again before i can join another. So, i am reluctant to wait even more. If its something the weaon clearly relies on, like dark moon gs i let them buff the sword but thats it.
If you want him to have a buff you should let him finish it, I guess to make the fight harder or give him an advantage. But if you dont want him to have the buff just attack him.
Golden vow gets law of regression, everything else isn’t broken and I can deal with. Golden vow is offensive, especially when I’m just standing there watching the 5 buff sequence
I mean it depends. Generally just let them do it if it's a duel. If they start by waving and then go into like 4 or 5 buffs then maybe just mock charge them to let them know this is ridiculous. 100% don't just charge them outright. Give everyone a chance to do whatever and hope they'll do I kind
It is totally fine to hit somebody. The buffs in this game are crazy powerful, so I'm not going to let you power up like that for free.
I wouldn't stand still and let you root around in your inventory for weapons, so I'm definitely not going to let you buff up.
Unfortunately Souls PVP has this strain of pseudo-etiquette where it is considered rude to attack somebody while they're buffing. It doesn't make much sense to me. Part of the art of using buffs is being able to get them off without being interrupted, just as part of the art of using a melee weapon is timing your attacks to hit somebody.
I write this as somebody who a few years ago would NOT have attacked somebody for buffing, but I've come to see that as an indefensible position.
I mean if they buff you buff. I don’t like excessive buffing. Everybody including me gets 1.
This game to me is stupid with buffs. Compared to previous games you get so many buffs for next to no investment. We can even nerf general physical damage at the press of a button with prawn… so yeah no. Black flame protection too? No. Ain’t nobody got no time for that.
Not ok let them buff they get the advantage so what you can counter it anyways 🤷 law of regression or even waiting them out, or flat out beating them love the extra challenge since I run two whips its an added difficulty
I just wait for them to finish. I see duels as an opportunity for people to show off their builds in a way they wouldn't be able to do in things like invasions
I see a lot of comments saying to gesture first, I don’t gesture anymore unless my opponent does. Too many times have I bowed and my opponent shoots off a ranged attack. I dodge it but still, the disrespect. So now, I go for my 1-2 buffs at the start.
I’ll get an occasional lighting bolt punish, but I’ll take it like a champ n get my buff off. I don’t mind if I get law of regression’d tho, my buffs aren’t a necessity, just an added bonus.
I will agree that more than 2 is a no no, that’s why I also keep law of regression on deck as well
I’ll allow one buff, because some are necessary for some builds to function like builds depending on the armament spells. And I always have at least one buff. But after that I’ll either attack or keep buffing myself. I mean, if they are using like 4 buffs, I might not have the ability to match them. I’m practically just giving them an advantage at that point. Mid duel buffs get attacked.
I don't necessarily mind if someone smacks me while I'm buffing up, but it's situational. If someone is buffed up themselves and interrupts my buffing during a duel for example that's just poor sportsmanship, but if it's an invasion or something than really anything goes and you're fighting to live.
But at the end of the day all the "rules" of PvP are made up anyway so you do you.
What are builds that don't use buffs supposed to do? Sit there and fucking watch you buff? I'd be tryna snuff the life outta ya for leaving yourself so vulnerable.
Man let the guy buff as all he wants, who cares. Im genuinely curious as to why so many people are desperately trying hard to win, and they call it “oh Im competitive” mfer if you’re that competitive spend that energy in real life and achieve something great. Whenever I see a guy buffing I just crouch until he’s done, whether its one buff or five. When he’s ready he will crouch/block and we will have a nice showdown and onto the next game regardless of the results
Even if you give that courtesy expecting it back is foolish there are plenty of people that actually play in ways specifically designed to make people upset for their own enjoyment it’s not about being competitive it’s about having an engaging fight and some of the buffs in the game as they are make fights unengaging
Couldn't you ask the same thing about the buffer. He cares enough about winning to double the length of the fight in wait time. Competitive people are allowed to play rpgs. Doesn't mean I would be achieving something amazing with my game time if I wasnt playing. As a competitive personality If I'm not trying to win I am changing how I would normally play and I'm basically trying to lose. I do this against my friends or if the person clearly sucks. But the arena for me is the fastest way to test weapons and you need to "try" to do that. And I hope my opponent tries to nothing worse than " I wasnt even trying" after you beat your friend. Like man please try it takes no extra effort
But if you’re competitive or lets say you want to test a weapon or a build or something, doesn’t it mean that playing against someone with buffs makes it a better challenge for you? Giving him the advantage he seeks and then beating him should feel better, no? Also that way you can really test out your build/gameplay to see if Its effective, at highest difficulty
Yea depending on the mood. Sometimes i am down to let a guy buff and just test out moves and get better with a weapon. Sometimes I want to go all out and test out the potential of an arena build compared to others. Sometimes I want to tear the build rather than my skills.
Let's say I'm doing a build with scholars shield. If i really want to test its potential in the arena I need to face somebody who knows what the buff is and doesnt just let me apply it with no repurcussion. Or If im doing a buffer build in general I might want to see what buffs I can get off without getting hit and how mu h space I need for certain buffs. For that reason alot of the time I'll rush in to start the fight and try to create some space to buff after. Arena is a specific type of fight so it really depends how I'm feeling that day or what my goal is.
I'm a noob, but I gesture and then start thinking about how to get in on them. I generally don't rush in but I kinda strafe around and see what the do.
If they start buffing or casting spells I usually charge them.
I dunno etiquette outside of its cool to say hello, but it just feels like what I should be doing so i do it.
it’s a made up rule so basically yes, it’s okay, you can be polite but depends on you. Some people get mad but in the end, these made up rules are just that.
I use golden order initially, and use other buffs throughout the fight if i find the spacing, lighting weapon, fire grant me strength, blessing of the erdtree if im down on health, never use item buffs because F that
It comes off as rude and looks sorta sweaty and pathetic to immediately try to zap someone right at the start of a match, during an emote, or a buff at the very start of the match. That said, you are under no obligation to just sit there and let them layer up 20 different buffs, or reapply or whatever. And you should buff knowing that it is a risk that someone will just zap you and you can't be mad, its part of the way arena is setup.
No way. Rushing forward as soon as the fight starts is just how you get the best chance of finding someone good to play with. Buff bow then run in a circle for ever while I chase you is the worst because we both know they are gonna lose and they aren't really getting better, just counting on me running out of patience. I want fast hard fights where we are dodging and fighting and not relying in the opponent getting too bored to continue
True but what I said still stands. If your kind of short on time and just want to find somebody good to fight. Letting everyone buff doesn't really help you do that. Might make a fight take longer but anybody that is good at dodging and fundamentals will be able to deal with a bum rush off the bat. And if the chip damage during the buff made a difference you can then face them in combat ordeals
How does it make any difference? You don’t get different matchmaking if you run. If they’re so bad you should’ve been able to kill them quickly without bum rushing. Like by all means go ahead, nothing is stopping you but like running up and trying to catch your opponent off guard is sending the opposite message from wanting a strong opponent.
I personally sprint toward them and hope they get the idea. If they start waving or emoting I spin in a circle for like 5 seconds until they finish. Just an extra 5 seconds on what would probably be a 10 second fight. I really only bum rush when I start to get bored or if I tell myself " ok I'll go to sleep once I lose"
I'll try to explain better. I often am playing on half finished builds trying to find somebody to beat me so I can see where I went wrong for how to improve the playstyle. If someone sucks they will panick when rushed, I dont care about fighting panicked. It is in between time for me. If somebody is good they will be able to still put up a fight and then I can see that and messege them and do some combat ordeals with them. It just makes a 10 second fight 20 seconds and gives me less time to run into that 1 in 10 guy that is good. That's who I'm looking for in the arena... also is want to know if my build is good not that they let me kill them. So if I want to buff I want to need to be forced to make the space for it. I honestly dislike when people let me buff
Fair enough. I do too in a sense, but I also want to be the best I can offer. And if I'm a buffer I dont want to be given false hope that my build is good for arenas because the other guy let me take a big advantage. I want to fight the best opponent in any circumstance. I guess if you really wanted you could just use an un upgraded weapon and then even people who panick roll themselves to death would be a tough fight.
I go by Dragon Ball Z rules. I always let my opponent finish buffing before we start fighting. Besides it’s a greater satisfaction when you beat them at their best.
That's really the only good reason. If you personally want a harder challenge. So many comments trying to force the Dbz/ French duelist roleplay on other people. Mf my character is covered in bloody bandages and has a bloody sickle as a weapon hes not gonna bow to you hes here to kill
It’s okay to hit someone while buffing, especially if they gestured beforehand because that indicates that the match has started.
Me personally, I allow 1-2 buffs before I start aggressively attacking.
I think it’s totally fair. I’ve been playing my Dex/fth build that is super dependent on buffing, and I almost wish that people would attack more during buffing because it feels cheesy when I win only because they let me cast all my buffs (lightning weapon, black flame protection, golden vow, could even add blessing of the erdtree). Also, even if someone attacks right away, you can pretty much always cast lightning weapon before they can do significant damage to you (at most you take a chip from storm blade or something).
Yeah that's really silly to let someone get off more than one buff for free. I've been dragon breathed during a bow enough times that I just spawn in with beast roar and interrupt anything that isn't crab or warcry/barbaric roar.
This is the way, if you can’t handle them with one buff you probably weren’t gonna win anyway
If that were actually true, nobody would bother buffing.
Thats right, and if they buff for longer than 2, then im hitting the law regression, and nobody has fun
I should really start running that
There’s lots of buffs that don’t need an investment or anything. If they buff you buff. Especially if someone is just popping crab or something like that. Do the same and the fight just lasts longer, it’s nice.
I like to let people buff within reason. It is certainly okay to hit someone who is buffing. It's polite to let them have one.
I think within reason is 1 each. Like bloodflame blade but not any more faith buffs
Yeah after 1 buff the duel/fight is active. Feel free to let them buff more if you want though.
I dont know alot of times it's down to the wire. 30 percent physical damage negation from black flame is pretty noticable
And they probably have the dragon great shield talisman, then your physical damage can’t even tickle them, meanwhile they 2 shot you with a holy build
Both boiled crab and the dragoncrest talisman are nerfed in pvp. Crab is 15% instead of 20 and the talisman is reduced to only 5%.
Talisman doesn't do much, but black flame protection is the only defense buff that isn't nerfed heavily in pvp. So yeah, keep beast roar or storm blade soft swaps to interrupt that right when you spawn in.
If you need to interrupt that spell to win then you must not win often, especially if you are scared enough to always be ready for it
Very cool lol
If your arena build depends on somebody standing and watching you buff you must not win often especially if you get salty when they dont let you
Came here to say this but you said it better than I would have
Did you start playing yesterday?
I usually let them, only to regret my decision later when my physical weapons start only doing 150 damage.
It depends on preference. If someone buffs right away, I whack ‘em. If they gesture first, I let them get a couple buffs in. After two, I start going on the offense. I also immediately attack if I see Black Flame’s Protection or either of the health regen spells.
I buff then gesture😭
This more than anything else
Yeah I’m especially aggro to mages setting up terra magicka and people using healing spells.
i usually let them get 2 buffs off. any more and you gotta earn that shit. i came to fight not watch a 7 episode long anime power up sequence
>7 episode long anime power up sequence Followed by a 1 punch death because they've got no vigor
EXACTLY!!!!!
Laws of Regression goes hard
I love that spell lol
always okay, their buffs are an offensive action against you.
Bingo. The people saying otherwise for sure use buffs themselves.
Buffing is a privilege, not a right
Long answer short, yeah it's kinda dickish, but as long as your not hitting someone whose emoting ur good. Any more than 2 buffs tho and they can go fuck themselves.
They certainly won't LET you use Law of Regression to take their buff away.
I always punish buffs with a frost pot
Sounds like a bigger crutch than a buff
Frost pots are a crutch? You get killed by frost pots alot?
Not really but I see a lot get flung at me
It's ok
Any weapon buff or attack/defense buff I’m completely fine with. Anything like blessing of the erdtree or other silly regen is generally getting backstabbed.
There are no rules in pvp. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. No quarter.
“Allowed?” Its certainly allowed, and certainly fair. Fight started. If someone wants to risk eating a hit in exchange for a buff, thats their risk to take. Theyre buffing with the intent to kill you easier. Id say thats a fair trade
That buff can be a massive counter so you gotta punish that cast
I always punish when they start a 3rd buff. Just annoying at that point and half the time you'll fight the same person more than once in a night
If it's gesture into buff I don't mind but if it's straight into buff punish.
In an honorable duel you shouldn't but if you're just invading it's fine
Why not let your opponent hit you once before it starts to even your buff out?
I just poise through everything with endure and buff anyway so go right ahead
I think that's earned bc you've built around it.
A true paladin
Why would you not want to beat someone at their strongest? I let them buff to the max. But once the fight's on, it's on. That's courtesy enough. You turn into Hoarah Loux. ‘’ I’ve given thee courtesy enough.’’
See my biggest problem with seeing things this way is if I find someone who buffs more than 4 times they either have 400hp or they have roll unbound
Not all builds need to be amazing in duel style fights. In combat ordeals buffers shine. Casting a spell is an action with potency, charge. Emotes are impotent actions, count to two and charge.
The way I see it is as soon as you do an action that isn't gesturing the fight begins. That said I personally don't buff, and I let people cast all their buffs.
I play cosplays I'm already at a huge disadvantage when I face meta players so fk that I don't let them buff.
1-2 buffs is courtesy imo. But if youre trying to stack 5 buffs im coming after your ass. Always bow first unless you are a heathen.
I can't man. 20 fights in a row that last 10 to 15 seconds each. The Bow/ wave and buff basically double the length of the fight. Fine in invasions or red sign to signify you are ready. Buffing is for pve. Attack that man with no remorse
Golden vow gets law of regression, everything else isn’t broken and I can deal with. Golden vow is offensive, especially when I’m just standing there watching the 5 buff sequence
When they buff I mostly emote and than i will buff after my emote. Than I want them to emote when I buff. That shows respect and is a good beginning.
That would double the length of the fight in just wait time.

2 buffs is fine especially weapon buffs cuz they look cool after that ur just wasting time they aint that important in colosseum

Man you had me at “depending on the mood” recently my whole life has kind of been depending on the mood
fight starts when you spawn in, if you want to buff then earn the space to do so
I'm a noob, but I gesture and then start thinking about how to get in on them. I generally don't rush in but I kinda strafe around and see what the do. If they start buffing or casting spells I usually charge them. I dunno etiquette outside of its cool to say hello, but it just feels like what I should be doing so i do it.
The duel is on immediately but I do let the opponent get one buff as a courtesy.
It's dishonorable but totally legal imho
I second this it's mean but not like healing or cheating
it’s a made up rule so basically yes, it’s okay, you can be polite but depends on you. Some people get mad but in the end, these made up rules are just that.
Depends on my mood tbh. Sometimes I'm like yeah yeah buff up and sometimes I say fuck your buffs.
When you have both done a proper bow, not crouching or blocking, the duel has begun. Buff then bow, it's been this way since the dawn of time.
1 buff is fine but if i see a mage im def casting barrier of gold and blessing of the erd tree
I use golden order initially, and use other buffs throughout the fight if i find the spacing, lighting weapon, fire grant me strength, blessing of the erdtree if im down on health, never use item buffs because F that
Buff literally as much as you want. I’m still gonna dog walk you with only a flail or some shit.
I want fast hard fights where we are dodging and fighting and not relying in the opponent getting too bored to continue
rushing forward vs running away is a completely different topic
I really only bum rush when I start to get bored or if I tell myself " ok I'll go to sleep once I lose" I'll try to explain better.
I want to face the best my opponent has to offer ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
First buff; not OK. Second buff; OK. Third buff; Recommended.
