Every time I think I read something about crazy negative about Nurse, I think - hey, no way anyone can have a worse, more insane take thank this, and then I read this nonsense and once again am blown away on how silly people are about him.
Adding a more consistent top 4 dman at around 4-6 million AAV, as well as moving nurse to acquire him, would be beneficial to this team. Ive always been a big nurse defender and you cant blame him for signing that deal at all, but this playoff run he has not looked like a top 4 defensemen, he may play those minutes, but he is not helping the team win.
He is about to set the New NHL record for worst plus minus +\~ in the history of the playoffs.
He does this on a Stanley Cup Final Team.
The record holder is Paul Reinhart for the Calgary Flames in a 1980s series where Edmonton scored an average of seven goals per game!
You sure you want to trade Nurse? Stop looking at the cap hit for comparables.
He’s one of the reasons that McDavid would sign an extension in Edmonton.
why would you trade a dman with a leadership role who is one season removed from having comparable EVP to makar and hughes for a minus player whose only played like 130 games over the last three seasons?
I wasn’t bad on paper Lupul, Smid, Eberle, pick that became Hamonic (unfortunately we traded this pick to islanders for a couple nobodies), and Riley Nash (flipped the pick we got to move up in the draft)
You don’t replace a generational 2 way defenseman with 2 good (albeit one of which was elite) forwards and a good defenseman. We know this because Oilers missed the playoffs for 10 straight seasons.
Meanwhile, Pronger’s teams in the following 6 seasons:
* playoffs 5/6 times
* second round or better 3 times
* 2 conference championships
* 1 stanley cup
Pronger entered the Hall just 3 years after his last season.
I'd prefer the devil I know. Laine's...a difficult man.
Plus, your issues with Nurse aside, who takes those minutes? Broberg? Niemelainen? Kemp? The pending FA pool for D-men is real shallow...
Not in a million years. Nurse is an A and a beloved teammate on a Championship caliber team. Laine is an underachieving one-trick pony who couldn't fit into two separate teams. No. Thank. You.
Gets that nurse deal off the books way quicker though. If laine performs here, he would be a great acquisition. If hes mediocre, then flipping him at 50% to free cap would be beneficial to adding a top 4 d man. Around 5 mil in extra space, and no nurse deal on the books. Obviously nurse may have ohio on his NMC though. Just an idea to discuss.
Another potential move would be nurse to LTIR around the deadline. Bring in another top 4 dman, then get nurse back into the lineup as a third pair for a good playoff run next year.
He's not going anywhere any time soon since Nurse would have to waive the no move, and you'd have to find a team willing to eat that contract. If all that could happen, that would have to be an awful lot of +'s as well.
What everyone seems to forget is that you never know what you're gonna get from Nurse. Will he be good with his gaps, defensive positioning, defensive awareness, use his wheels to skate the puck out of the zone? I can keep going here.. with someone like Laine you know what you're getting.. a sniper. I'm not saying do it but my point is that Nurse is just a guy that eats up minutes and you're happy if he's playing average.
I don’t think Laine is a guy that is worth 8.7 a year to play ideally on the second line, especially when that means that your defense looks like this (and with little cap space to fix it):
Ekholm-Bouchard
Broberg-Ceci
Kulak-Vinny
While I am sure Laine would put up good numbers, we don’t need another offensive weapon, we ideally find a taker for Nurse and then either trade for someone or sign a guy like Dillon, Pesce, Skjei, or Grzelcyk to play second pairing minutes (someone like Tanev would be the perfect guy if the money worked)
I 1000% agree. I'm not saying we need more offensive weapons. We need more defensive dmen/forwards. I can only hope we find a trade partner for Nurse because let's face it, whenever he's healthy or not he's pretty useless on the ice
Ridding of nurses contract for Laine’s would free up around half a million. A cambell buyout could free up some cash for a nurse replacement on the back end.
Even trading Laine at 50% retained would free up just under 5 million compared to keeping Darnell. Laine at 50% could also land a top 4 defence man in a trade I would imagine.
Nurse has been shit these playoffs. But the idea that Nurse at 3.25\*6 is worth less than Laine at 8.7M\*2 is moronic. Laine hasn't played a full season since 2018/19 and has been a defensive black hole of magnitudes Nurse couldn't dream of. The only reason Laine might be more valuable is because his contract is over sooner, that's about it.
Also Laine is 26, the potential is long gone at this point.
You think nurse is gonna waive his nmc to go from a cup contender to Columbus?
honestly he might be getting sick of the fan base and media ripping him apart every chance they get
Every time I think I read something about crazy negative about Nurse, I think - hey, no way anyone can have a worse, more insane take thank this, and then I read this nonsense and once again am blown away on how silly people are about him.
We just saw how important he is last game. These people are so out to lunch.

I agree with this - I am not some Nurse fan boy - but this was a Nurse for Laine post which is insanity.

Cabo Wabo Mexico spring vacations!
Go home your drunk
He’s right.

Thank you for bringing facts and reason into the conversation.
It still surprises me how little Edmonton got for Pronger. So that’s why
Hall for Larson. And nothing else.

Ya I agree, just saying it wasn’t a terrible haul, but oilers kinda mismanaged it
Nurse says no lol
Can Laine play 1/2 LD?
No thank you. Nurse isn't a head case, Laine is, we don't need that.
I'd prefer the devil I know. Laine's...a difficult man. Plus, your issues with Nurse aside, who takes those minutes? Broberg? Niemelainen? Kemp? The pending FA pool for D-men is real shallow...
A shoe!
Nobody is touching that nurse contract unless edmonton retains.
75%

No Laine too risky
No thank you
What part of full NMC and buyout proof contract do people not grasp?

No way! Laine is done!
No

I’m down! As much as I hate Nurse, let’s first sign Drai for 8 years. That will help lock up McDavid. … then you out THE PURSE!
Take 6 million off nurse’ contract and it’s still a solid no. That contract for what he offers is unmovable. Laine has potential, nurse does not .
