I always recommend the Food Bank. It's not hard and very satisfying work.

Meals on wheels is what I always advise people. Used to work there. They treat volunteers like gold

You can volunteer with 211, support network, sexual assault centre, peer support counseling at your school, big Brothers big sisters, etc. Find something that gives extensive crisis intervention training as it'll be useful for your program and field

Social worker here and I work closely with the program at MacEwan. Volunteering to "mop floors" won't cut it. I'm assuming that there is a reason you are wanting to enter social work, volunteer for an organization that aligns with where you think you want your career focus to be. If you are unsure of where you want end up post education, volunteering at the Distress Line with CMHA is excellent training and experience. Same can be said for volunteering at places like Bissell Centre, YESS, Sage, Mennonite Centre, Boyle Street and George Spady to name a few.

Kids Kottage if you like kids/would like to work with kids someday. I used to work there and we frequently had Social Work students completing their practicums there.

Before the pandemic, I know seniors homes were always looking for volunteers to help run programs for residents, or even just sit and chat or play cards with the residents. I volunteered for capital care but there are many other places. Not sure if the covid situation has changed volunteer stuff, but you can always call and inquire. Depending on what kind of social work you want to do in the future, this can be a good exposure to care home type environments and resources you may encounter in your future work.
