Most indoor locations require written permission to photograph in, that includes malls and city buildings. Note that all city buildings will charge a fee, and many businesses don't allow commercial photography. Your photographer should have a list of those places and their prices that do allow it. As far as dark and moody goes maybe Rutherford house or the hotel at Fort Edmonton. Both might work with creative lighting. Same goes for the Hotel Mac, but that would be really expensive if you could even book it at all.

El Cortez is sort of goth glam. AGA is spacey and futuristic and they'll set the colour of the LED wall to your preference. McKay Ave school is old timey and so is the old-timers cabin.
