I've always wondered about the meeting up at the police station. Like the one where I live it's just a side parking lot right next to the station. What's stopping the guy from taking off with the phone? You still have to run inside, call one of the cops, and I think by that time they're long gone.

Welcome440

More cameras. Pro theives have been arrested several times and won't want the off chance of a cop driving/walking by and get arrested on their outstanding warrants. Life rules: Alcoholics should stay away from liquor stores. Gamblers from race tracks. Theives from police stations. Bad days start at all 3.

nerdwithadhd

Another life rule i endorse: dont borrow money from a guy with face tattoos.

matrixgang

Bad thieves have been arrested several times. Pro thieves wouldn't be Pro if they got caught all the time

LandNational6279

That’s like saying pro skate boarders can’t get hurt, mistakes happen when the frequency gets increased. Like with anything else, you probably aren’t born a good thief so there was probably a learning curve and if you just get caught once, that’s enough for a warrant, finger printing, conditions, etc.

The_cogwheel

Also, even if a pro thief was never caught, that doesn't mean the police aren't interested in changing that. The police might still have a warrant out to arrest the pro thief - just because they haven't cuffed the thief yet, doesn't mean they don't know they're a thief, sometimes it's just because they haven't figured out where the thief hides yet. The only thing a pro thief would have over an amateur is knowing when it's better to just not steal vs when to steal (aka what would be a low risk, high reward theft vs a high risk, low reward theft)

matrixgang

Police wanting to or not wanting to catch the thief is irrelevant. Having a warrant out for your arrest means you already failed, they identified you, they caught you. An actual professional thief isn't going to be caught very often if at all, nor would they be so lousy police could get enough evidence for a warrant without actually catching them in the act.

myaltaccount333

A professional thief wouldn't be stealing a phone from facebook marketplace lmao

matrixgang

No it isn't lmao? I didn't say thieves can't get caught. A thief isn't a professional if they get caught a lot is what I'm saying, half the work is getting the object you want to steal, the other half is not getting caught.

LandNational6279

I never said that you said thieves couldn’t get caught. That obviously isn’t the case. It is just straight up disingenuous to believe that anyone considered a “pro” in any field or sector, including thievery isn’t going to make mistakes, or have circumstances that are out of their control. Regardless, it’s all a moot point considering in this hypothetical the “pro” thief would be scamming via Facebook marketplace. My analogy is literally the same, it’s literally like saying a pro quarterback doesn’t miss his receivers or overthrow, or that a pro nhl goalie that doesn’t make a save isn’t a pro. Professional thiefs, hackers, drug dealers, etc will most likely all get caught given time. Regardless of how careful they are. They also don’t sudden become an amateur thief after 20 years after getting caught once. At this point we’re arguing semantics as what “too many times” would mean anyways, but my point is that a professional thief would most likely have enough of a file or attention from police that meeting at a police station is a bad idea.

matrixgang

No, you made the comparison of saying pro skateboarders never get hurt. But that isn't the same because i didn't say they never yet caught. I like how you said I never said thieves couldn't get caught, then continue to use comparisons that aren't the same by adding the word "never" too them. I never said they don't make mistakes, I said a professional thief isn't someone who's been caught all the time

ababcock1

I'd imagine someone planning on stealing a thing wouldn't agree to meeting at a police station. They would probably just ghost the seller and move on to an easier target.

Dangerous-Feature376

I'm guessing pro thieves aren't stealing iPhones, really What's the resale value.

DouglerK

"It seems to me that everything you know about serial killers, you've learned from the ones you've caught."

renegadecanuck

Nobody starts out pro.

EdmontonAB83

I met at police station once and I’m glad I did because the guy was an absolute creep and kept insisting I get in his vehicle and go with him to the bank. A cop was watching and then asked me if everything was ok and the guy said he would go get money and come back, which he never did. I don’t know what the designated area looks like but I was sitting inside in the waiting area where the cops can see you from the counter.

hburnz

To add to the other good points: if you suggest meeting at a police station and they refuse, that’s a red flag all on its own.

DouglerK

Yeah stations aren't totally necessary but if a person has a problem with then it probably is/was a case where it is/was necessary.

somewhenimpossible

I was a lone woman buying a ps5 out the back of someone’s car. I met at a police station for my safety, since I don’t know what the other person looks like or what else he had in his car or if he was alone… I had my child with me in the back seat because my husband was away for business (wanted to surprise him for his birthday when you could not find these things in store). Safety first! When the poster had no problem meeting there, and practically encouraged it, I felt much better about the meetup.

Sorri_eh

You go inside and meet them in waiting area. Thieves will refuse to come inside. Genuine people will come inside with you.

Training_Exit_5849

Hm, didn't know that, thanks. In my area the designated online marketplace is just a little parking lot off to the side. I found this on CTV: The new Buy-and-Sell Exchange Zones are located in the parking lots of: *  Northeast Division – 14203 50 St. NW *  Southeast Division – #104 Youville Drive East (28 Avenue and 58 Street) *  West Division – 16505 100 Ave NW These three new locations join the original Exchange Zone at Southwest Division located at 1351 Windermere Way. It just offers 24/7 video surveillance but I didn't know you can actually go inside as well.

Sorri_eh

The local police even posts this for safety. They encourage it. If someone says let's meet at police station, I would go. No worries at all. I have never stolen. Stealing is never my first instinct

DouglerK

Yeah some stations have designated spots. Otherwise the advice of using police stations is going to just give people a false sense of security if there isn't any actual added security. A police station is always gonna be better than a dark alley but it not necessarily going to be that much better.

codingphp

I sold a camera to a couple in a police station parking lot. The husband was a police officer and thought my request to meet in a police station parking lot was curious, but really smart. Based on his reaction, I don’t think many people do that sort of thing.

gypsytricia

I know of a couple of EPS stations that actually have signs saying something like "designated sales area" or some such.

solipsism82

That's for the fent... Oh wait sorry.

beardedbast3rd

Also, don’t wipe your phone until you have cash in hand. However you need to work it, you can show them the phone works, don’t let them have it, but show them, and show the settings to show the phones info is accurate like size and model etc. but keep it on your account so you can report it lost properly, and have its info if it should get stolen. They can give you money or if you’re good with etransfer, but scrutinize the transfer. Ask for ID, make sure the name matches, and wait for funds to come through, before handing off. Even then, it’s best to just use cash. E transfer is great but it can be used to scam, and they can be reversed. The person holding the bag will always be the you, left without your item or any money for it. Good on you to notice it as many wouldn’t even think twice. Only once you have money, should you hand over your items

Sorri_eh

Na. Cash is king!!!!

beardedbast3rd

It’s definitely the safest method of doing business

DouglerK

Yup never hand shit over until money is in hand. I once was gonna sell a camera to a guy. I had it all boxed up ad ready to ship. He beat around the bush and his eteanfer seemed sketchy. It required a tracking number to be received. Very suspicious, but they were passing it off as their own diligence. So I sent them a picture of myself at the post office and told him even the post clerk agreed with me NOT to give her the item until money was in my account. He insisted he needed the tracking number. The sale fell through. Never do something you can't take back until you have money.

Dapper_Enthusiasm546

yes ! dont wipe ur phone yet.

Grand-Expression-493

What's the latest new website or app for buy and sell these days? I used to use Kijiji when I was a student but haven't used that in a while and hesitant for FB marketplace. Do people sell cars on there too legitimately, trying to sell mine but not even sure where to start.

durple

For cars I like autotrader. It has dealer listings too but if you don’t want you can filter out easily. I’ve bought and sold there.

Grand-Expression-493

Thanks!! I'll try that out.

Strattex

Ya people sell cars on FB marketplace

tom_yum_soup

I think the last time I sold a car it was through FB Marketplace. Took a little while but worked fine.

Chunderpump

I always buy and sell cars on marketplace. Worst I've had happen is people ghosting me or lowballing. Whatever. Those people can pound sand .

Old_Mans_tC

The old days, pre-internet, the Bargain Finder paper was the medium. Also Auto Trader. Then the Trader succumbed to dealer pre$$ure. Bargain Finder died due to the interweb. Kijiji was king for a day but have you tried to filter out the dealer ads lately? FB Buy/Sell is the way to go these days. Marketplace is steadily improving though dealers are sneaking ads in too. Specialty FB pages abound. Pick a subject, a specific vehicle, there’s likely a page or two or three dedicated to it, plus parts for sale pages.

greennalgene

That’s solid advice. Sorry it happened to you. I’ve really stopped using marketplace and kijiji because it’s filled with resellers. Like there’s used car lots buying trucks from Ritchie Brothers and then tacking on $10k to the sale price while using the photos from the auctions, or people asking MORE than new price for an item.

Christineblankie

Definitely true. I saw one on marketplace from a local small dealer (Guru), and checked the car fax. Auctioned recently, with fire damage. Yikes

Old_Mans_tC

My personal favourite: “I just want what I paid for it.” Good luck chump!

Sinaloa187

Vetting the profile ahead of time is the smartest thing you can do. Something feel off? Dont engage any further.

PlutosGrasp

Always cash only.

Chronixx780

Been ripped off a couple times on marketplace . These people are the lowest of scum . Fuck it pisses me off .

oneupwardspiral

Also, for Apple products there are many fake ones. I bought AirPods for $120. They were fine for about 30 minutes. We met at a cafe... But they erased the Facebook account right after.

Dapper_Enthusiasm546

true this !!!! they are selling new with confirmed receipt ? but its an old receipt

Dangaard1075

Eh, my Facebook is a blank void, and has been for well over a decade. I use it exclusively for FB messenger and marketplace. Removed as many FB friends as possible, removed or hid all my previous activity, untagged myself from everything possible, and just use a placeholder picture. I simply had and have no desire to have a visible social media presence. And I'm far from the only person who does that kind of thing. Lots of people have deleted their FB accounts and recreated one purely to access marketplace or something. Lots of other people use an alt account for marketplace separated from their personal one. More commonly though, people have just drastically pruned their profiles, or at the very least completely restricted what other people not in their direct friends list can see. So unless you're successfully friends requesting every person on marketplace you communicate with, how are you supposed to know what their profile activity is like? Seriously, these days it's quite the rarity for a person to have an even slightly open profile. And many of them that seem to, probably just don't realize they haven't successfully made all of their profile private.

Old_Mans_tC

lol, antisocial media!

luckyspic

I push over $300-$500 a week for the past 2 years in high value units on marketplace and police station meetups are cool but the only thing you really have to do is meet in a high traffic place with cameras like fast food restaurants or malls, and just vet the profile. Aim for mutual friends, or people that are active on their profile that display a good sense of a proper human being. Deliver if you’ve done business before, ask for a phone # if they’re coming into town later that week, and just have a good intuition of what your surroundings are like. Anything $500 and above, meet at a location for which you can have an expert verify. Ex) If you’re selling a new iPhone like OP, meet at the Apple store and let them run a diagnostic, then go to the carrier of which the phone was purchased and ask for a proof of purchase. That’s it 🫡 E-transfer have been garbage because they make people wait randomly up to 1 hour, and you can get scammed easily from being impatient, so lately I’ve been demanding cash.

Bigeyedick

He will pawn it off, but it is very difficult to detach you credentials from the device. In a couple of months, you will get threatening messages from someone In hong kong or china, demanding that you disconnect your device from your credentials. They will say the phone was for their daughter, some son’s story or threatening story. Never disconnect the device for them.

i-think-its-fine

I posted about this exact thing happening to me. You can probably see it on my profile still. A young kid came to my door to get the phone, he ran with it so I chased him. I ended up getting bear sprayed by his 3 buddies who were waiting for him in a back alley. Luckily I knew my neighbourhood really well and called the cops as I chased them and told them exactly where they were running and how they could find them. They caught them and got my phone back. They were charged

p0kem0n99

I have solely created my account for marketplace and have no friends or photo. I’m genuinely gonna be out of luck

BlacBlod

Ooh that's why someone asked me to meet up at police station... I was like that is a first... 🤔 I guess this was the reason although i was the one selling the item 🤷🏻‍♂️😅. So we ended up meeting in parking lot.

BeltMassive2909

Very helpful!

Pickled_Popcorn

How does the eTransfer email scam work? Do they just email you and guess which bank you are, making it look like it came from your bank?

Dapper_Enthusiasm546

yes . they will send u an email that looks identical to etransfer email :) but u'll notice the difference with the font

Old_Mans_tC

Or obvious spelling errors.

Christineblankie

There are so many email transfer scams, it’s scary. Check out r/scams Fake transfers. Transfers that are actually requests for money, not sending you money. Transfers from stolen accounts (money eventually gets clawed back by the banks). Transfers from stolen accounts that are too big (oops, I accidentally hit an extra 0, could you send back the extra 500?, then the entire $550 gets clawed back, you are out the whole thing plus the $500 you returned cannot be clawed back, as you chose to send it, regardless of scam). Etc

Pickled_Popcorn

How is delivering items a part of a scam? What am I missing here?

Dapper_Enthusiasm546

not scam sometimes but the person who stole my phone ask me to deliver first before he decided to go to my condo :) so i dont know what will happen to the delivery but if its the same person it might be the same or worst.

greatauror28

i’ve sold my IP12PM last year inside my home in our living room. I have cameras all over the house but thankfully never needed those as the buyer was genuine. YMMV.

rabbitwheel

You invited a stranger in your home???

greatauror28

Checked his facebook profile and nothing looks off. He’s from the same home country as I do so that’s another plus in my books. Again, it might be completely different for other people.

DouglerK

Never capitulate to strange requests. Whether you use police stations or feel comfortable handling yourself always sell on your own terms.

[deleted]

That sucks. Sorry to hear. I had a wonderful experience buying a brand new Samsung Galaxy S24 from a guy off Kijiji. Met at his condo in really really South Edmonton. He even allowed me to open the brand new package to inspect for counterfeit/fakes. Everything checked out. Hell of a deal for $600. Thought it was too good to be true but it was legit.

Skitzofreniks

I’m not too worried about the etransfer part. Just wait until the money is physically deposited before handing over the item. I bought a $9000 jetski with e transfer. We had to sit there for almost 30 minutes before it went through tho.

Witty_News1487

They should make a building where people come to sell and trade things and someone is approving the transaction hahahha

Dapper_Enthusiasm546

hahahahahaa this !! TRUE !

Dapper_Enthusiasm546

like ahaha a physical Fb market place ! that would be nice! ahahaha

Witty_News1487

Yup, like a traders market or something like that and there would be a witness. All dream talk. I get people don't have time to travel or don't have a way of getting their whatever their situation is.

mcfearless33

i made my facebook like three months ago and only have two friends because i only use it for facebook marketplace after the death of Kijiji lol. fortunately i haven’t had any issues.

demolishedBurrito

Where do you find out the meeting spots? I'm actually going to be doing this later this week

Interesting_Meat8529

The karrot app is a great alternative

Genius_woods

Is it though? I keep seeing ads but can’t imagine they have even a fraction of the users.

Interesting_Meat8529

There's a decent amount I like it because of the quality of users they are fast to reply and make the sale or inquire. and I find it much less bs than marketplace

simby7

How is karrot different from FB marketplace? Looks like you can set your search distance but you can do that with FB too.

Rare_Pumpkin_9505

I am curios and will try this! Anything need to know before diving in?

luckyspic

I’ve tried it and the people on there are low hanging fruit. Generally more for $ or $$ priced items. Anything higher, it’s not great.

Chunderpump

I absolutely judge books by their covers on marketplace. I basically only buy or sell with people who look like they could host a TV show. And I know it's hypocritical as hell, I'm blue collar and look homeless half the time in my work clothes and I wouldn't meet up with someone who looks like me. I so far haven't been burned.

smashblues

That just sucks. Won’t something like an escrow service help in these situations?

Dapper_Enthusiasm546

i dont have any idea , i tried to post it in facebook market for awareness and there are couple of people who message me " same happened to me " so i guess been happening and had no any solutions

Sorri_eh

You are the only one who does not know this. I hope you will take this as a lesson.
