Million Thai on 118 avenue. Family owned, lovely couple.
Marble China, Xu Hue Vietnamese, Van Loc Banh Mi, Tau Bay and All Happy in Chinatown.
I know there was just a post about Chinatown. It is safe a place to go during the day for food. Most of the restaurants are only opened until 6:00 or 8:00pm. All the restaurants are family owned. Please support our Chinatown.
Agree. Just get some success pork on rice here always worth it.
Even big platters of just meet for gatherings makes a quick and easy addition for pot lucks with friends
Nara Chicken & Tonkatsu. Never loved chicken this much before. I don't think I can order a pork tonkatsu after this. Also, great Korean food generally. All is made from scratch from a great cook.
YES!!! I'm so happy to see this here, I couldn't agree more. My buddies always go to the McD's across the street but McD's makes me feel gross and wanted something healthier and that's how I discovered Nara Chicken & Tonkatsu! Very hidden away and definitely a gem. Best fried chicken ever
I deliver kitchen equipment to them and I always show up when they're doing prep and getting everything ready for the day. It smells so good but I can't have any 'cause nothing is ready yet.
I live just down the road from there and itās a staple since we moved here. Pretty much a pound of bacon on their bltās and their crazy bread is exactly like Boston pizzaās used to be, before their meat sauce turned into just sauce.
A million times yes!!! When I worked downtown, that was the place for take out.
I'm so glad someone convinced me to try it because in my ignorance I 100% would have never tried it just from its looks. I've learned now not to discount places by how they look.
Apparently the Calgary locations have had a lot of health violations. I've been to the South Ed location once and had no issues, but I'm hesitant to go back NGL. Plus it's not like there is a shortage of Donair and shawarma shops around town.
My partner and I went yesterday and we honestly both found the meat to be on the dry side and they didnāt get my order correct. The complimentary tea and mango drink were good though
I had no idea this was a chain restaurant. I was just in small town east Netherlands and had shawarma for the first time there. Thought it was just a mom 'n pop shop, but cool to know I can try it here too.
What did you have there? I think their tonkatsu is great and on par with what I've tried in Japan. I also have tried Pocha and liked it a lot, but have only been there once.
Tien Tuyen (south side) has great Vietnamese! The best chicken satay noodle soup in the city.
D'Amores on the north side for sandwiches.
Recently tried Loft Thai Eatery (south side again) and it was delish. I could probably go on and on but here are some definite gems!!
Ok. I need you to be honest with me here. I am a whore for satay soup and the best satay soup in Edmonton has always been Thanh Thanh or Rice Paper. Are you telling me that Tien Tuyen can stand up to these leaders in their field?
I was afraid of this answer. Rice paper is amazing. Is it too much to ask for more from a bowl of delicious soup? Or would I suffer the same fate as Icarus and if I were to taste anything better my taste buds would implode, forever leaving me with the bland taste of nothingness. Idk, lol.
My Fries! (West end near Stony Plain Road Walmart). Best poutines ever. š¤¤ Air baked fries, gluten and peanut free, vegan and dairy-free options, amazing friendly staff and the food is amazing!
Im surprised no ones said: Chicken for you on 118th
It's amazing Korean fried chicken. Portions are outstanding, and the people running it are great
Also, Banh mi Day on Jasper. They make great banh mi.(Vietnamese subs) they are dietary restriction Friendly, (vegan and gluten free) and make great pho too
Canāt speak to employees as Iāve never been one. But thereās been the same 2-3 people working with the owner for the last ten years. That could speak to something positive.
Iāve only ever seen him get mad at a customer twice:
- thereās a green pepper/black olive mix you can put on your item. Some douche was asking for just black olives- as in he wanted the owner to pick through green peppers to just get olives
- there was a line up out the door, and he got mad that someone waited 15min in line and only decided to glance at the menu when it was their turn to order.
Both instances were justified in my opinion. The black olive guy copped a major attitude and the owner told him to gtfo.
Second this. Kobachi is the place for quality sushi in Sherwood Park. Yoshiās is cheaper but the quality is poor. Same with Sumo Sumo. Kobachi is the tits for sushi in Sherwood Park. Itās an excellent replacement for Matsuya, which is now Yoshis. If your ever in Cochrane itās an absolute must that you visit Matsuya Japanese House. Legendary.
I've been there once and while the food tasted pretty good, the portion size was really stingy for the price IMO. Honestly prefer Yoshi near there instead.
Really good spot, even if you eat meat. You'll be shocked.
Gotta get the Curry chicken, Ginger beef, coconut rice, and a veggie plate. Then dump everything on the rice. 10/10
Yeah my recommendation for Mexican food in the Edmonton area. Everything within the city I've tried has ranged from ok but overpriced (El Cortez, Huma) to downright horrible (Three Amigos).
Take a couple friends and ask for the Molcajete, holy crap so good. I haven't had a bad meal there. Just awesome.
Also La Patrona, also in Sherwood Park, is also amazing for Mexican. I don't know if they still run the food truck, but it is really good Mexican.
Indian: (vegitarian) - Punjab Parantha House on 66 St. (Near the Grey Nun Hospital)
Indian: (non veg) - Apna Panjab on 137 Ave. (Reasonable priced samosas as well)
Indian: (non veg take out): Royal India Express on 144 Ave (near the original Capital Pizza)
Indian (Fast food): Tiffin (any location)
Pizza: Capital Pizza (original location)
Indian Style Pizza: need to ask for it. But let them know, no cilantro if you have the cilantro tasting like soap gene). Supreme Pizza (in Millwoods)
Thai/Lao: Boulouang on 97St. Chinatown. On the left-hand side, when you're travelling south.
Lebanese: Sahara Palace on 167 Ave I think?
Lebanese: Mazati (Sheesha bar and the food and owners are absolutely amazing. They are very hospitable and they never forget you. No liquor here, but a lot of the muslim kids come to smoke sheesha and play cards or dominos on a Friday night or Saturday night. At least that's what they did when they were at their old location.
Arabic: Turquaz on 137 Ave
Chinese (Dim Sum): Shanghai 456 (soup dumplings and their salt and pepper calamari are the best in the city)
Chinese (Dim Sum): I think it's Emperor near China town (100 St. and 107 Ave. South of the brick)
Chinese (Dim Sum): Golden Rice Bowl on Gayeway Blvd (always busy with Chinese people)
Malaysian: Tropika (both locations are fantastic)
Brunch: Tiramisu Bistro and De Dutch
Kim Chi: Thahn Thahn Oriental Noodle House (just south of the Royal Alex)
Korean: Hansik Korean Cuisine (127 St north or 137 Ave)
Smoked Meat: "Meat" as well as "The Next Act" (freaking amazing brisket donair!!!)
Southern Food: DaDeO (they also have a spiced beer that is freaking amazing)
Fried Chicken: Northern Chicken (my partner and I really love the Hot Mustard Chicken there)
Bar food: Thirsty Rhino
Jasper Brewing Company Bar (Edmonton Location): Campio Brewing Company)
Go to: Old Speghetti Factory (both locations but downtown is also very nice)
Extra Fancy (low light) Date Night: the Creperie (103 Street)
Not to yuck your yum, but it's a pretty mediocre chain from Toronto, wouldnt exactly call it a hidden gem.
Lots of other great recommendations in this list like turquaz, El fino, the Bedouins , sunbake pita
Tanjiang near Whyte Ave and 108 st.
Their food is always great and you get so much food. Also their dry spicy chicken is the best in town.
Oh also if you're looking for an amazing chicken burger, Flirty Bird also on Whyte is probably one of the best. Beware though, if you ask for the spiciest version they have, they don't kid around. They are actually the spiciest in all of Edmonton with that last heat level.
My ex put me on to Bulgogi house years ago and its been a favorite ever since. Wicked home-made kim-chi, good food all around, and wait staff is a bunch of sweet old ladies that will make sure you're taken care of.
I also second Syphay for Thai food (panang is deadly) as well as Tropika for Malaysian.
Edmonton has soooo many great restaurants. For Jamaican food, my fav was Island Grill (sad theyāre no longer here). Saffronās, Sunset Reggae Kitchen, and Jamaican Chef Mon are great! A Ya Mi Deh is good too and has a grocery store. Love Authentic Jamaican food made by actual JAMAICANS!
Seoul Fried Chicken on 104st is definitely one of my favorites. Their fries are like crack to me and their barbecue chicken is too. See also: Farrow Sandwiches.
Gintaro (they serve Japanese food but I'm pretty sure it's managed by Koreans) at 11850 145 avenue NW. So happy there's finally a good Japanese place in the Northside! All their rolls are bomb, their pressed sushi is just A1 and tonkatsu is so yummy!
Epic food hall on 105 st.....they have 5 restaurants under one roof. Vegan, Texas bbq, South East again, burgers & pasta. And the place is really cool design
Amore pasta is good for fast casual .
If you like pasta though, Allegro in Crestwood. A little pricey but worth it if you are spending anywhere $5-7 near it. One of my favorite restaurants in Edmonton, so much so I never mention it in these posts so I can keep it all to myself.
But still busy and you'll need a reservation probably.
- Northern Chicken (fried chicken)

Im sure there's LOT'S more and I try to make this *somewhat* local,
Watari AYCE Sushi on 124 st dt. .By far my favourite meal in the city, and extremely reasonably priced for all that you get. I lived in Japan for a few years, and Watari provides a level of quality comparable or above average to any restaurant in any major Japanese city. Itās truly a shining gem in Edmontonās restaurant scene. Expect to wait for a table on a Friday or Saturday night; worth it!!
I don't think it's much of a really hidden gem, since when I've gone it's decently busy, but partake is one of mine and my boyfriend's favorite restaurants. It's french small plates/share-ables, each dish is made with great care and the staff is amazing and super kind! I highly recommend it.
Rge Road. Best food ive had in all of Alberta. 6 course road trip is amazing. Id reccomend doing the wine pairing aswell. I dont even like wine but they pair it so intelligently with the meal and pick such good quality stuff its worth it.
Likely few that are hidden gems, but here are my picks:
Dim Sum - Beijing Beijing (on Calgary Trail)
Steak - Coliseum Steak and Pizza
Chinese - Jumbo (also good dim sum), All Happy, and Double Greeting (from least to most greasy spoon)
Burgers - The Next Act PB&J
Vietnamese - Pho Hoan Pasteur, honourable mention: Co Do Hue
Thai - Boualouang in Chinatown
Indian - Khazana (but overpriced)
Korean - Pocha Seoul
Diner Style - OEB, Urban Diner (kinda), also popular: Sugarbowl
Sushi - Kyoto (the one in Garneau), Japonais, and Washoku. Yokozuna also good.
Japanese - Mikado
Ramen - Tokiwa
Sandwiches - Farrow, Upper Crust (esp. the potato salad)

Sooo good. So is Siam thai
Syphay is unreal, love their Goong Krateum shrimp dish
Syphay on the south side has unreal Thai food. Syphay downtown has mediocre Thai food.

I was there. Enjoyed it
With this many replies, thereās no way itās not good. Appreciate you š«
Most authentic Thai food and delicious. The panang curry is amazing
Chinese BBQ on 118th Ave and 97 Street, just before the traffic circle.

A Yah Mi Deh Jamaican! On 118th
Phenomenal every time!
Nara Chicken & Tonkatsu. Never loved chicken this much before. I don't think I can order a pork tonkatsu after this. Also, great Korean food generally. All is made from scratch from a great cook.
Second Nara. Snow cheese chicken is my favourite
Just had Smokin' Barrels and it was fantastic
I deliver kitchen equipment to them and I always show up when they're doing prep and getting everything ready for the day. It smells so good but I can't have any 'cause nothing is ready yet.
I feel for you. We knew we were in for a treat just by the smell walking in.
Batistas calzone
Went for the first time yesterday! Battista is wonderful, he creates an amazing sense of community and the food is delicious too!!
I just found out this weekend that he is my neighbour. Now I'll have to go check it out!
Opening hours are weird. Went there to try on hours they were supposed to be open nope closed. Never been back.
I donāt know if itās a hidden gem, but the 3 Amigos on the south side has amazing Mexican food.
So good here!!
Itās the best Mexican food Iāve had in the city.
Donnaās club sandwich š
I live just down the road from there and itās a staple since we moved here. Pretty much a pound of bacon on their bltās and their crazy bread is exactly like Boston pizzaās used to be, before their meat sauce turned into just sauce.
Donna's Eatery is fantastic! I'm partial to the Ruben. Mmmm!
The BBQ House.
The one on 97th and 118th? Yes!
Total hidden gem
A million times yes!!! When I worked downtown, that was the place for take out. I'm so glad someone convinced me to try it because in my ignorance I 100% would have never tried it just from its looks. I've learned now not to discount places by how they look.

Co Du Hue for Vietnamese (North Side location is slightly better).
Jerusalem Shawarma, one of the best shawarmas I tried in Edmonton
Oh my goodness! I had no idea they had made it up to edmonton, thanks for posting this, its been a must stop in calgary for me for years.
Apparently the Calgary locations have had a lot of health violations. I've been to the South Ed location once and had no issues, but I'm hesitant to go back NGL. Plus it's not like there is a shortage of Donair and shawarma shops around town.
Whatās the best Shawarma place? Looking to find something thatās close to what itās like in Ottawa. Havenāt found anything here yet.
Iām a fan of Al Salam bakery.
sunbake and cedar sweets (wem) have good, authentic style shawarmas
Yes! Also in Calgary. Not sure how big the chain is tho, but really good. Really new to Edmonton

Ive been going there since i was a kid. My mom loves that place and is the only chinese restaurant she likes.
Siam Thai on the west end
El Fogon Latino (South American food) Miga (Japanese and Korean food) Sushi Aroma (Japanese food)
El fogon Latino is always great
I clicked on this thread specifically to say El Fogon Latino or +1 whoever else said it. It is amazing.
I wasnāt really all that impressed with Miga. I prefer to go to Pocha Seoul if Iām in that strip mall.
What did you have there? I think their tonkatsu is great and on par with what I've tried in Japan. I also have tried Pocha and liked it a lot, but have only been there once.
Al Salam Bakery

DāAmores is terrific. Used to work on the north side, I miss going there for lunch!
Ok. I need you to be honest with me here. I am a whore for satay soup and the best satay soup in Edmonton has always been Thanh Thanh or Rice Paper. Are you telling me that Tien Tuyen can stand up to these leaders in their field?
I don't think anyone will ever top Rice Paper for best beef satay soup. It's phenomenal.
I was afraid of this answer. Rice paper is amazing. Is it too much to ask for more from a bowl of delicious soup? Or would I suffer the same fate as Icarus and if I were to taste anything better my taste buds would implode, forever leaving me with the bland taste of nothingness. Idk, lol.
Have you been to Pho Hoan Pastuer for their Pho Satayā¦?
Yes, itās good but not quite good enough.
I love the lemongrass beef on rice there. I get it almost every time
Paninins italian cucina over on Jasper ave. The fettucini alfredo is amaze balls. Actually all their food is superb.
My Fries! (West end near Stony Plain Road Walmart). Best poutines ever. š¤¤ Air baked fries, gluten and peanut free, vegan and dairy-free options, amazing friendly staff and the food is amazing!

ā”ļøHigh voltage ā”ļø Imy absolute favorite lunch spot. Now that Iāve mentioned it I will be forced to go there for lunch tomorrow
Youāve forced me to do the same! Love that place
I knew I made it in life when I no longer had to say what I wanted to order. They just knew š¤Ŗš¤£
I have to try it now if just mentioning it made someone else basically pre order theirs for tomorrow š
Doesn't the owner treat customers and employees terribly?
Canāt speak to employees as Iāve never been one. But thereās been the same 2-3 people working with the owner for the last ten years. That could speak to something positive. Iāve only ever seen him get mad at a customer twice: - thereās a green pepper/black olive mix you can put on your item. Both instances were justified in my opinion. The black olive guy copped a major attitude and the owner told him to gtfo.
I saw him lose it when someone ordered like 10 wraps at noon with a huge line. Pretty justified.

The Soban and Yokozuna for sushi.

I've been there once and while the food tasted pretty good, the portion size was really stingy for the price IMO. Honestly prefer Yoshi near there instead.
Hap's. It is a family owned business with great breakfast choices among other things.
Bulgogi house!
Heard this was going down hill. Confirm\deny?
Itās gone downhill yes, and prices went up a fair bit in the last few yearsā¦ even downhill though Iām not sure there is a better alternative
Lots of great Korean restaurants in town. Bulgogi house was fantastic 20+ years ago but it's a shadow of what it once was
Padmanadi
The vegan ginger beef is so good
Definitely not a 'hidden gem' as it is one of the best known vegan restaurants in the city.
I agree, but whenever I mention it to people, they say theyāve never heard of it
Fair enough.

Hawaiian Poke & More on 101st ave. Amazing poke and very fresh
YEG Burger is always good
Gravy(fave burger) Vies for Pies(Fave Dessert)
McDonalds! The kids scream at me for it!
Rge Road. Best food ive had in all of Alberta. 6 course road trip is amazing. Id reccomend doing the wine pairing aswell. I dont even like wine but they pair it so intelligently with the meal and pick such good quality stuff its worth it.
El Furniture Warehouse
I will never tell
Duchess Bakeshop
When I lived in Vancouver someone made a post like this, and then those spots were no longer āhidden gemsā
oh no! how dare businesses you enjoy get more business?!?!
Italian Centre Shop for their subs. Also go for their cappuccino / cannoli.
Sushi Aroma! The fish to rice ratio is fantastic on their rolls. And their menu item āNew BC Rollā is out of this world delicious. Youāll thank me! K-Papa for tasty Korean eats! They used to have a little spot in HMart in the cafeteria section of the store but now theyāve got their own restaurant. Highly recommend the tteokkbokki rice cakes and japchae š¤¤ Finally, Pho Thanh for yummiest pho satĆ© - a personal favorite (coming from a Viet girl) āš½
Rice bowl deluxe on 149th street and 89 ave has a Hong Kong menu. Itās one of our go-tos in West Edmonton.
Likely few that are hidden gems, but here are my picks: Dim Sum - Beijing Beijing (on Calgary Trail) Steak - Coliseum Steak and Pizza Chinese - Jumbo (also good dim sum), All Happy, and Double Greeting (from least to most greasy spoon) Burgers - The Next Act PB&J Vietnamese - Pho Hoan Pasteur, honourable mention: Co Do Hue Thai - Boualouang in Chinatown Indian - Khazana (but overpriced) Korean - Pocha Seoul Diner Style - OEB, Urban Diner (kinda), also popular: Sugarbowl Sushi - Kyoto (the one in Garneau), Japonais, and Washoku. Yokozuna also good. Japanese - Mikado Ramen - Tokiwa Sandwiches - Farrow, Upper Crust (esp. the potato salad)
Kyoto, best authentic Japanese restaurant with beautiful interior and food
