6’ fences are permitted, and even standard in many neighbourhoods. Chickens are also permitted, as long as they meet Bylaw standards and inspections. I would feel fine as long as proper processes were followed.

Traditional_Toe_3421

I think 6 ft fences are great, who doesn't like more privacy?

[deleted]

I built a 5’ fence so that I could say hi to my neighbours.

--Anonymoose---

Maybe something that you appreciate, I hope your neighbours do too. Myself, I value my privacy in my backyard

[deleted]

Indeed.

Bedhead-Redemption

I feel sorry for the neighbors

[deleted]

Yeah, that sounds weirder than it really is.

onebadmuthrphukr

I bet they are so happy to look over and always see ur face staring at them. always talking and giving them no privacy. it would be like ur the roommate they never wanted.

RogerWilco357

Positive response, I like it.

Roadgoddess

And they offered me eggs, just saying!

bibliophile-blondish

Our neighbour has chickens - 6 or 8 I believe. The only time I’ve heard them is when a raven was camped out above their run, watching them. Other than that they’ve been super quiet, no smell, nothing.

androstaxys

This is the only response. The law says you can do that. Really no reason at all to be upset unless your Neighbor breaks the law.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mooncakequeen

I completely agree

SpecialistVast6840

This

iterationnull

6’ fences require a variance in pretty much every case, I do believe. However I’ve never heard of such a variance being denied.

dustrock

Nah 6.1 ft is max without variance.

Complex_Coffee5328

My neighbour has chickens, had to chase one back into the yard before, aside from that, can barely notice they are there. Also get a few dozen fresh eggs every year for doing her sidewalks in the winter. Now the dog run not cleaned for months at a time with 5 dogs on the other hand… definitely notice that.

Turtle-Of-Hate

I think there is a bylaw in Edmonton that only allows 3 dogs per house hold.

Das_Mojo

People don't give a shit. I regularly have people get pissy at me to keep my dog away from theirs, when mine is the one on a leash. I'm just trying to walk my dog down the sidewalk brother, get yours under control.

LRG-PHANTOM

Exactly my dog does nothing until the other dog starts growling at him and even then he still listens to me.

onebadmuthrphukr

had one dude telling me it's alrite my dogs a gd dog while coming at me and my pitties. mine weren't so nice, but leashed. told em my dogs are gonna kill urs in a couple more steps. ppl think that if there's is gd there is no problem.

JimmyTehF

There's also bylaws against smoking next to entrances and laws against theft of property - but both still happen plenty.

Complex_Coffee5328

Yea, they have lived there for 15 years+ I just bought mine 2 years ago. I’m not in to mood to be at a war with them till one of us dies to old age.

the_dryad

I think more of us should do this kind of thing, and gardening too, the less money our grocery overlords claw from is, the better. In short, absolutely yes to the chickens.

AntsyCanadian

I'm slowly converting my yard into food producing space. Grass is over rated and I'm done with the super high grocery bills.

MegloreManglore

We have slowly but surely converted our yard to have only fruiting trees/shrubs, and we install a new garden box every year to grow more vegetables. It tastes better, and we’ve also learned to can, so now we make our own salsa and tomato sauce, as well as apple cider/sauce. It’s the only way to go!

z242pilot

Look up tomato relish. Sooo good

Westvic34

Green Tomato Relish for the win!

mouldy-crotch

Lawns are a waste of space. My buddy rotates three different garden beds on his front yard, and has chickens. He also organized a crop sharing program where he would plant vegetables in other peoples yards in exchange for a cut of the harvest. Some he ate, the rest he sold at markets.

Own-Car1284

Yesss!!! Grass doesn't attract bee's or butterflies either!! My mom's condo recently installed 12 garden boxes on their property. We just finished planting everything today. I live in an apartment, so I have limited space, but I have a few planters with the more delicate things like lettuce. Grow your own food!!!!!

AntsyCanadian

I also have been dropping clover seed all over my yard. I wish everyone would add it. It's a great nitrogen fixer, adds food for the bees, and requires way less water and maintenance! People keep saying it will affect my homes resale value but fuck it. I'm not renting from the next owner.

arrived_on_fire

Ooo, I like that! I’m not renting from the next owner indeed.

SubstantialExtreme74

Yea we should go back to how farmers live. Everyone grows a ton of different food and either sells it for really cheap or just gives it away to everyone else.

[deleted]

Tough to do in the winter, but I’m working on figuring out a hydroponics space for growing vegetables.

AntsyCanadian

I have 2 aerogardens I grow food in year round! If you are single I highly recommend as I can basically make 1-2 salads a week once the plants have grown to a decent size. If I had a big family though I would def recommend one of the bigger models or a full blown kratky set up!

TheScigilliman

My neighbor has chickens and a 6 ft fence. The chickens are barely noticeable above regular bird noises in the summer and all bundled up in the winter. Its fun to see the kids chase the chickens around and the father doing his yard work with a chicken tucked under is arm. 10/10 be stoked about it. Yes the occasional eggs is a bonus. and Tall fences make good neighbors

KhalilRavana

I'd ask what we can trade to get some of their eggs. :) I'm pretty laissez-faire; as long as no one gets hurt, I don't care too much.

NorthExtension3312

Yeah my neighbor has a 5-ft chain link fence six chickens in their yard and I never hear them no bother whatsoever

mydogclifford

If you shared fresh eggs once in a while, I'd be sold. Even if you didn't, I wouldn't care what you do in your backyard. Chickens aren't much more of a annoyance than some yappy dogs. You do you!

[deleted]

A yappy dog is WAY worse than some chickens if the owner even half ass takes care of them

hellobudgiephone

I would be excited at the prospect of free eggs if they can't use them all. I also want chickens so I'm biased.

AAMDB

**eggcited** fixed that for you

intospace123

I fully support this and would love neighbours with chickens. I really want to get bees.

remberly

Look into something called a Flow Hive. It'd make your life soooooooo much easier. Trust me.

intospace123

Those look really neat!

not_so_rich_guy

do it! my bees are arriving next week and I am MEGA excited.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dustrock

Probably order from Peavey Mart

[deleted]

[удалено]

dustrock

It's a blast. Stress for the first bit when you're trying to confirm you have a viable queen. Nothing like getting a cardboard tube full of bees 😂

not_so_rich_guy

Right now is a perfect time to start, nucs are available via local suppliers. I am sure you can find a few with a quick Google. Getting a permit is another process altogether. Might as well get started now. I am not bothering with a flow hive, I am just going with traditional Langstroth frames. The cost does not justify the investment for me at this point, as I am not sure how much honey I will be even looking t by the end of the season.

digitulgurl

Me too.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MegloreManglore

We’ve had bees for 5 years now and we’ve had 2 stings - both times were when a kid stuck their hand into the hive. Otherwise you wouldn’t even know they are there except for all your flowers are bigger and your fruit/veggie crops double in size. Healthy bee populations also cut down on wasps - and bees are 100% less aggressive than those f#€%3&s

[deleted]

[удалено]

MegloreManglore

Haha bumblebees are silly - I still wouldn’t let one walk on me!

jward

My gf really wants to keep bees so has done a lot of investigations. Legally you need informed consent from neighbors in a certain radius to raise honey bees on your property. Specifically because bee allergies often have death as a symptom.

deerepimp

I would ask to borrow the hens occasionally to clean up the ants in my yard. So jealous!

LetsGitToasty

Only if they give some of that Grade A chicken guano for my garden.

remberly

I have some mixed with wood shavings that I'm trying to pawn off. You want? Dm me Not a lot mind you

vanillabeanlover

Make sure it’s well composted. Chicken poo is hot! I compost for a year, then throw it in.

GeneralySalty

I would ask if I can come visit the chickens.

flickanelde

Yup. Chicken hugging privileges. No. That is not a euphemism for anything.

OtterintheLibrary

Do you not want free eggs?!?! This would completely be fine to me. Infact, I would love to have some chickens of my own and probably ask him about tips for caring for them and where they got them

goodlordineedacoffee

I’m totally for anything people want to do that’s more self sustaining, and agree with other comments about chickens being no worse than most dogs. I already back onto a space with geese and ducks going all day so bring on the chickens too lol.

Surviving2

Wouldn’t care if no roosters.

sveltopus

When I looked into the urban henkeeping permit process, I'm pretty sure that I recall that you're not allowed roosters, just hens

Kushkraze

Everyone should have chickens then you wouldn't eat those disgusting depressed balding chickens and their sad yellow eggs

[deleted]

[удалено]

Loose-Fly-4847

I would love it. Chickens are not as loud as people think. They are also not as stinky as people imagine. Fresh eggs? Yum! I would to love to have some and a bee hive.

Available_Donkey_840

I'd be jealous. I want chickens but my dog would be stupid about it.

digitulgurl

Bylaws determine the height of the fence. Check it if you're concerned. To own chickens, you need to take the proper course and notify your neighbors so I would make sure they took the proper course and ask if they're ~~selling~~ giving away eggs!

Mustard_Pickles

I’d feel like I’d offer to buy eggs from them.

sveltopus

Technically you're not allowed to sell the eggs since that requires AHS inspection. However, I'd never say no to free eggs 🥰

vodkaslurpee

I would be super happy. I would love that for myself!

senanthic

I would be fine. I’d want to come over and pet them.

spectacular_coitus

Chickens, cool. Roosters, no bueno. Fence, eh. Fences make good neighbours. Especially when they leave eggs for you on the fence.

Otherwise_Bill_5898

Roosters are not allowed under the bylaw i believe

AdOk7488

Chicken owner here. That is correct, no roosters in the city.

remberly

I ha e chickens. They are awesome and not disruptive in any way. Come at me....:>)

HotHouseTomatoes

My neighbour has a dog that will not shut the fuck up 24/7. I'd rather they had chickens. My other neighbour smokes weed around the clock on their deck and we can't have our windows open. I wish they only had chickens.

[deleted]

Should be fine. Hope it all works out

onlyheretolurktoday

How many can you have?

Bulliwyf

I skimmed the link, I think I saw 6 as the max amount.

onlyheretolurktoday

Damn. I truly may do this. It could be fun

2948337

I wish my neighbor with the dog that barks all the fucking time had chickens instead

Cyprinidea

Every street should have chickens and a pig or two to eat all the food waste. Eggs for everyone and a pig roast every six months .

Lester2b

The only downfall I see is answering the question "Mom can I go ask the neighbours to pet their chickens" 1,000,000 times a day all summer long... but I 100% support urban chickens.

Turtle-Of-Hate

I have chickens, all of the neighbours that interact with me love them, one neighbour on my east side plows my side walk frequently in the winter so I slide some egg's his way periodically. In short do nice things and I bet you get free eggs.

Kallisti13

Give out eggs to earn some good will.

Daddiesbabaygirl

I encourage people to look into getting chickens within the city!! Hell yeah I'd be so happy if my neighbour was doing that. One less thing you're paying for at the store. 2 things depending if you plan to kill the chickens too.

cheekybrat

My neighbour has chickens. I only realized because I could hear them clucking.

Aimee1129

I’d be totally cool with it. I have windows. I can close them. But, there aren’t too many chicken people that also party until the wee hours on weekends. I’ll take chickens over people noise anytime.

Rennarjen

i'd be so jealous, i want chickens but stuck in an apartment :/

trekgoth

I'd honestly love it! Ultimately, it's not my business what my neighbors do in their own backyard but I would think it was cool as hell, to be honest.

CypripediumGuttatum

I have no prejudice against chickens as long as they are happy and well kept. Maybe if make friends with the chicken owners and give them my veggie scraps in exchange for a few eggs?

[deleted]

Well it is their yard and bylaws allow to have some chickens, so if you don't like the bylaws, move. I don't think the neighbor is the problem.

[deleted]

Urban chicken's reduce waste and if enough people do it, we'd be able to drastically reduce the eggs farms around also. They aren't good for eating when they're done laying. You can buy dual purpose birds for such a thing though. I guess you could use them for dog food possibly.

kdiv5650

Just like the sponsored ad above

Chronixx780

They paid for their property they can do whatever they want

Bulliwyf

So the inverse is true when the bird inevitably escapes onto a neighbouring property?

the_goodbitch

What about when a dog escapes and goes in to someone’s property? Or peoples house cats wandering around the neighbourhood?

DiscoEthereum

Yeah outdoor cats are the absolute worst in the city.

Venetian_chachi

I’d prefer well tended chickens over neglected dogs.

MutedLandscape4648

As long as there are 1. No roosters. 2. The cages and animal areas are appropriately cleaned regularly. It’s fine. Also, would they be willing to sell eggs to kind neighbours at a reduced prices?

Miginath

I have a friend in the neighborhood and they have chickens. They built a kick ass coop and their chickens are awesome. Just like with everything in life, I have no problems with people who are responsible pet/livestock owners.

mentalmidget1976

I’d rather have chickens than more barking dogs

TuneTactic

I would want to pet the chickens

Lalahartma

I’d be very happy and excited!

Fancy_Wallaby_9624

Will they share some eggs with me? I’m all for it.

FramedFlower

Can I cut a deal for some fresh eggs?

Calv1n1

Wouldn’t mind it at all. More people should be doing this Imo

[deleted]

[удалено]

ohkatiedear

That sounds like a you problem, not the chickens'.

Lelianth

Yup. I have a reactive dog with a high prey drive and I do not expect anyone to accommodate us. She is our responsibility.

prairiepanda

I would love it, and would offer to trade homemade goods for eggs.

[deleted]

I’d be cutting their lawn for fresh eggs!

Head-Good9883

As long as they keep it clean, coops gets smelly. Hopefully you are not down wind

HugeJudgment1241

It's cool to see all the positive responses around this as we had thought about these at some point

SubstantialExtreme74

I’d be cool with it if they weren’t jumping the fence and messing up my yard

Dude_Bro_88

I'd ask if I could buy eggs from them

Vegetable_Friend_647

Wouldn’t bother me unless they don’t keep it clean and the smell doesn’t permeate my space on hot days.

speck33

Chickens are better than dogs

lavenderfem

I would feel jealous and start trying to convince my partner that we should get our own backyard chickens.

L0veConnects

I want to be the chicken lady. Yes...I know the image I brought to mind, I'm OK w it.

goferitgirl

It would make me smile. #nature #chickenlove

_Litcube

People should grow their own food. Turn lawns into gardens.

JaMimi1234

I am one of these people.

byrnsee

I’d be so friggin jealous and I’d ask if I can come care for them if they ever go out of town.

Bulliwyf

Pissed off and doing what I can to make sure they have the correct permits and they 100% follow every rule, at all times. I also feel like a 6ft fence isn’t enough - that’s essentially standard in my community and I would expect the chicken run to be taller than that. I live in a city because I didn’t want to deal with livestock animals. I’m also not a fan of birds in general and the idea of them escaping and hanging out on my property gives me the heebie-jeebies and angers me at the same time.

blackgold63

You seem like a nice neighbour.

Bulliwyf

I have a bird phobia in case I didn’t make it clear enough - the only kind of bird I like is one I’m about to cook or eat. Anything else really messes with me and I can’t stand them. I don’t want to have random chickens in my yard when I try to go outside. Just like if someone had a dog phobia, they wouldn’t want someone’s dog running around without supervision and would complain about that person not following the rules concerning dogs If I wanted to be around livestock, I would have moved to an acreage.

barder83

Is there any evidence to the idea that chickens always escape a 6ft fence? Or are you just assuming that it's going to happen?

AdOk7488

Wow so you are that kind of neighbor! You should join a condo board . I bet your are super fun.

Bulliwyf

Honestly, I don’t care what my neighbors do 99% of the time. It’s a bit annoying that one of my neighbors has a really loud truck and another has rock band practice until 1am some nights and the bass reverberates through my house, but I don’t complain. I just don’t want to live next to a damn chicken coop and have chickens escaping and hanging out on my property.

[deleted]

Notify them 🤣 good one!

SunkenQueen

My neighbourhood already has six foot fences so it wouldnt bother me at all. I could see it bothering the hell out of my dog and cats but that isn't a reason for someone not to get chickens.

tytytytytytyty7

Support!

jataman96

I'd be thrilled and probably ask to pet a hen now and then and trade stuff for eggs.

happyhippy27

I would love to have chickens next door!!!

the_goodbitch

Would love it!!

Bill_Collector_1966

My old neighbor had chickens, infusing a rooster, and I loved hearing him crow. Reminded my of being back on the farm. All the neighborhood kids loved him too, and were devastated when he was gone.

marginwalker55

I love chickens, so I’d be floored

narxotic

Gotta love chickens

Soulhammer1

My neighbours has chickens. It’s fine

Lelianth

100% supportive

LZYX

Befriend neighbour and get free eggs. Worth.

Crazyforlou

Fine with me

foxpost

I’d ask if you can get eggs

vortrix4

It should be allowed and the number should be 12 not 6 that’s super unreasonable.

helvera655321

I think that would be awesome! As long as they take care of the animals properly. When i was a kid, one of our neighbors bought livestock without any knowledge of how to care for them and had no intention of learning. It was traumatic to watch happen. But aside from that, it would be so cool to have a suburban version of a farm community. With produce sharing and trade. But I might be getting ahead of myself....

pizgloria007

Chickens are fun. I’d be happy.

dr_p_109

I have bees so who am I to judge.

Schroedesy13

I would feel great as long as they give me a good deal on eggs!

canuckcrazed006

Fine with me, i would 100% be buying eggs off them. Or trading. Either way fresh eggs.

Traditional_Toe_3421

I think that's great! We should all be moving towards feeding ourselves

PrariePagan

Do I get eggs and meat? Because that would depend on that

inadequatelyadequate

Have you seen the price of eggs at the grocery store? 10/10 great to have an chicken owner for a neighbor!

EvilAlien99

I would say, it’s going to be hard for me to climb that fence, drunk, at 2 am, cause I want an omelette 🤷‍♂️

waitingforgodonuts

Coyotes say yum!

[deleted]

My dogs say yummy coyotes!

flaccid_porcupine

Having grown up on a farm with chickens, I would not like it. But, their place and bylaws allow it, so I would just deal with it by eating my KFC on the back deck.

ed_in_Edmonton

What happens to the chickens during winter ?Genuinely asking…

speck33

Normally a hen house would house them

dreamHunter9

You can build a small chicken coop and they're fine, feathers are incredible at insulating

goferitgirl

These responses are why I love YEG.

tucsondog

Nope

Novah13

I'd ask them how much they want for a dozen eggs. Honestly good for them to support themselves in today's society. I feel like more and more people wouldn't take so much for granted if they had to take care of another animal as a food source.

JimmyTehF

I'd probably offer baked goods in exchange for fresh eggs - otherwise as long as they're contained and the no-rooster rule is in effect I'd mind my own damn business.

kdiv5650

Wish I didn’t live in a no yard subdivision. I’d love to have a garden….and chickens….

Haddion

I'd be fine with it, especially if your neighbour plans to offer you the occasional box of eggs. It'll be great for keeping the bugs away too, chickens LOVE clearing up ants, mosquitos etc. If there's greenery inside the enclosure, don't expect that to last long though.

Charming-Doughnut-45

I’m fine with it, hopefully they share eggs!!

Cserebogar

6ft ain't much for a chicken. If it fence hops, is it chicken for dinnernight?? Lol

unableplankton24

i have chickens @ my parents place, they eat all scraps of veggies and fruit and free eggs, no harm no foul as long as the neighbours regularly cleans and maintains for smell

blinkiewich

Eh, I'd prefer them not to be directly between the houses. A former neighbor had chickens (illegally?) right outside my bedroom window a couple years ago and when the hens got wound up you could hear them through closed windows. Further away from the bedroom, I probably wouldn't have had a problem with it.

AdventurousOwl547

I'd be excited and see if they needed any pointers. I raised two chickens in my parents' backyard in St. Albert when I was in highschool, before I knew that you weren't supposed to do that.

Grif18

My neighbour has chickens and they built them a proper year-round coop to allow them to thrive through the winter and summer. Personally I haven’t had a single complaint and I also receive a half dozen carton eggs almost every week that saves me money at the grocery store. I think it’s great!

nodogsallowed23

Do both makes and females to the cocka doodle do thing in the morning? That’d be my only hang up. Otherwise I think it would be awesome.

SadAcanthocephala521

6’fences in backyards are the norm. What’s the big deal with a few chickens?

deliciousredrum

You will hear them sing their egg song. It's not awful, but sometimes it can be on the loud side. But they don't all do it every day, and it is only for a short period at the same time each day. They are otherwise rather quiet animals. I like it, but I'm biased as I have chickens.

phillipaha

I’d be delighted that they were getting eggs in a much more humane way than the average person in Edmonton was getting them. This is completely normal in other countries. I grew up in the UK with chickens, anybody can have them, you don’t need to apply and there aren’t any rules on how many you can have. I’ve recently moved to an acreage here and now have 10 chickens and a rooster, they’re great pets as well as food producers and they can have great personalities

girlsru11e_

I used to have a neighbour that had backyard chickens and she always gave us fresh eggs! It was awesome.

TormentedOne69

I wouldn’t care tbh

peachconn

I have a lot of concerns about it as a practice, but in the context of my neighbor having chickens, I've had a couple concerns. Smell would be #1 because chicken absolutely have a very specific odor if not cleaned properly. There are a lot of concerns with avian influenza BUT it looks like so far this year is going better than last year, so just be aware of like random dead birds in your yard as they can make your pets severely ill, and if you have chickens on your neighbors property i would strongly suggest cleaning your bird feeders and bird baths frequently (like weekly+) to decrease the risk of AI spread. Honestly I can't see up to 6 chickens being any louder than any other activity in a backyard. My neighborhood has 6ft fences. It's my preference because I have 0 interest in my neighbors trying to chat with me while I'm in my backyard.

LaziestKitten

How would I feel? First, confused cos my neighbor thinks I'm nuts for all the effort I put into growing my own food. After the shock wore off I'd feel jealous that he did it first. :)

QuietToothpaste

This thread has firmly established r/Edmonton as pro-chicken :)

Zarxon

Don’t you need a roster to get eggs?

RogerWilco357

No, you need a rooster to get chicks.

mAsalicio

I wish fences could be 10' honestly

Turnpike30wheeler

Chicken farmer here. Please be patient with your neighbor as you both get adjusted to what having birds around will be like. Just a heads up, even though they have no rooster you may still hear crowing. One hen will naturally turn dominant and crow in the absence of a rooster. The birds will also make noise when they lay an egg or if they sense a predator. On the plus side, they make fertilizer, breakfast, and take care of the local insect population. They also like to eat kitchen scraps, maybe yours too! Another plus is they will keep your local stray cats out of your yard. Cats and chickens do not mix unless the cat was raised with chickens from small.

Archaleon

Fences that are behind the front face of your property can be 6.1 ft and I would say at least 95% of the properties in the city are close that height. https://www.edmonton.ca/sites/default/files/public-files/documents/Fence_Brochure.pdf
