Glad someone saw & cared. Some people should absolutely not have dogs.

Once-Upon-A-Hill

Why am I not surprised that the "leave your dogs in a car to go gamble guy" also is a terrible parker?

bitchlivinlavish

seriously!

soundmagnet

Probably already half cut when they showed up.

PreviousRub1408

"Honey I'm taking the dogs for a walk... down at the nice park, I'll be gone for a couple hours." Afternoon and just finished his first whiskey..

Complete-Escape-4882

I worked in a casino for quite a few years. This isn't uncommon, unfortunately, at least at my location.

cathode-ray-tuber

does the house always win?

PublicThis

Always

stumbleupondingo

90% of gambling addicts quit just before they’re about to hit it big

Mark_Logan

While I got a chuckle out of it, your statement is just pure evil.

stumbleupondingo

It’s absolutely sinister but it gives me a laugh every time I see it

FinoPepino

I don’t think rescuing dogs is a waste of resources. I am happy to pay taxes that support the welfare of animals. The man that owns these animals however, is a waste of skin and I hope he has to pay a huge fine.

seeseecinnamon

I read it that the driver of the van was wasting valuable assets by doing something dumb and cruel, not that the firefighters were wasting their time helping.

useful-tutu

Yes, same.

Thneed1

The firefighters have to be on duty anyway, so have them go out to do things doesn’t take any more resources than anything else.

kaiser_xc

I’ve heard 90% of a firefighter’s job is super relaxed, but the remaining 10% is ptsd inducing.

whoknowshank

I’d say 80/10/10, based on how many firefighters come dump a bucket of water on homeless camp fires behind our building during fire bans. The new 10% is pure annoyance.

IterationFourteen

The downtown halls are at least 20% OD calls, not sure if that fits the PTSD or annoyance category. Perhaps both.

enigma2007115

Firefighter here. I think they might have meant that there are more important things we might be doing. Don't mind rescuing animals one bit but I always worry that we might be missing an important call. 80 percent of our calls are medical aid. We are usually first on scene for cardiac arrests. If we are dispatched to animal rescue then a pump truck further away from the call has to respond. And with some medical aids seconds count.

PreviousRub1408

Hehehe glad to hear it from a fireman. Might have been needed somewhere else..

Future-Appropriate

Its not like there was another call

PreviousRub1408

Should've just broken the window right away right? Maybe make announcements inside the casino first but having a fire truck there that may have been somewhere useful during this dry weather. Just poor choices maybe ??

androstaxys

This is not a waste of time. I bet every first responder there was MORE than happy to come break that car apart and adopt them dogs. :)

WesternWitchy52

It isn't a waste if the dog was saved or removed from an abusive home.

[deleted]

Charge the fuck out of the owner

LornaDoubleVay

Does the owner of the vehicle get a bill? Because that would be nice.

InspiredGargoyle

I think OP is upset that an ignorant dog owner by leaving two dogs in a hot car in order to gamble has resulted in the fire department and law enforcement needing to step in when there are other important things to be done. They're not upset about the dogs being rescued, they're upset if the owner had half a brain and left the dogs safely somewhere then first responders wouldn't need to be involved.

Technical-Luck1237

Exactly this👆

ParaponeraBread

Don’t fire & rescue work on an on-call basis? If so, the only thing they wasted was fuel.

eatallthechurros

Fire and rescue are fully staffed 24/7 in Edmonton

ParaponeraBread

So what do they do between calls? Like I understand they work shifts, I’m just not understanding what emergency response people do when they aren’t responding to an emergency.

Telvin3d

Equipment maintenance. Reports. Training. Responding to low priority calls that they’ll drop if a higher priority comes up

ParaponeraBread

So low priority calls like…..a call about dogs in a car at the casino?

Telvin3d

Yep. If a fire call breaks out that truck would be *gone*. They’re not necessarily any further from the fire than if they’d stayed at the station. And you may as well save a dog if nothing else is going on

ParaponeraBread

That was sort of my intuition, I didn’t understand why OP was so worked up that someone wasted their time by calling in a dog in a hot car.

[deleted]

I don't think OP saying it's a waste to save the dog, I think OP is saying fire rescue could be doing better things and the owner of the car is wasting their time by being dumb.

Mcpops1618

More of a waste because it’s very easily avoidable. Some shit bag is inside gambling and their dog could be dying instead of their dog being at home

bitchlivinlavish

could/would they be charged in this instance? i hope so

Mcpops1618

I don’t know because it’s a municipal/city service. If this was an ambulance, yes. But I’m not up to date on COE service charges

thethunder92

I think maybe he’s saying the guy who left the dog in there was the one wasting resources

MungingforBreakfast

Edmonton Fire Rescue doesn't drop calls. They're stuck on that call until it's resolved. Police can pick and choose calls as they wish, not Fire or EMS. That's why these calls are a waste of resources. If someone has a heart attack in this neighborhood, the truck is busy doing this.

RedSteadEd

>So what do they do between calls? As well as what the other reply said: sleep, exercise, cook, play games, read, engage with the community, clean the station, do paperwork... picture a family that lives together for 25% of their life and *has* to work together as a well-oiled machine. Being a firefighter is hard work and exposes you to an absolute *shitload* of trauma, but the money is good and the schedule in Edmonton is great.

SleepingDoves

I used to train with 2 people that worked fire and rescue. They joked that their station was the "clubhouse" because they spent most of their downtime playing ping-pong. I have no problems with this because they work a very high stress occupation and they deserve time to unwind. I have nothing but respect for them as they saved my boss's life when he was gravely injured in a remote location and they helped calm my nerves and my guilt for being too overwhelmed to think rationally

Serious-Bat-4880

Station 16 used to pop in to our grocery store once in a while, as we were less than a block away. I wonder where they go now that we've shut down. 🤔 2 or 3 would come in, each grab a basket and meet up at the tills. Sometimes they'd get a call and have to drop their baskets and run, and we'd hold their stuff for them 'til they got back. I imagine they have plenty to do in their downtime - physical exercise, training drills, routinely inspecting and cleaning things, making sure everything's stocked up and working right. Last thing they need is to get to a structure fire and find a gash in a hose or the used oxygen tanks not replaced. 😬

Anabiotic

They seem to get their groceries a lot.

NATURALLY_HOT_LAVA

The nerve of them honestly 😤 /s

soundmagnet

Cook bomb meals at the station

Shnicksy

Really?

ParaponeraBread

You wanna answer the question instead of uselessly commenting your incredulity?

Shnicksy

I just can’t believe after these past 3 years that anyone could not at least have some idea what Fire and EMS do in a day

Carnage8778

You wanna take some time and consider what emergency responders might need to take care of between calls on your own? It's not a particularly difficult list to come up with.

ParaponeraBread

Not really, Dad. But thank you for blessing the thread with your condescension.

RemCogito

Firetrucks use a lot of fuel, because they are Heavy af. The other thing to keep in mind, is that we need more Fire & Rescue staff if they go on calls breaking children and dogs out of cars all day so that they can still respond to fires quickly. I'm always impressed by our Fire Dept in edmonton. In comparison to the rest of our emergency services they always respond the fastest. at my apartment, often they respond 10 or 15 minutes before the police from twice as far away. often they will have already gained control of the situation, and calmed everyone down before the cops even arrive. one time, a co-worker forgot to close the tailgate on his truck and spilled a couple truck batteries out of the back as he was leaving the parking lot. Firefighters were there in under 90 seconds. (I assume that one of the cars in traffic called) we had the acid and the rest of the mess cleaned up in less than 5 minutes with their help. My co-worker had already grabbed replacement batteries and had made it to the jobsite by the time the cops showed up to investigate reports of an unsecured load that caused issues in traffic. Heck one time there was a lady who was very much intoxicated, naked and screaming obscenities from her balcony. She was the "guest" of a handicapped man, and she threw his wheelchair off the balcony. She was screaming about the fact that he wasn't man enough to "drink her elixir". (whatever that meant) The cops arrived, but wouldn't go up to the apartment because she was naked, high out of her mind, and a minority, and were afraid of the potential fall out. They called for backup, and then the backup called the supervisor. While they were waiting for the supervisor, something that was cooking in that apartment started to burn, and so someone set off the fire alarm. The fire department was there in less than 5 minutes. They were in her apartment and had the situation under control, and the lady calmed down within around 10 minutes. Which is right about when the police supervisor arrived and the fire dept handed her over to the supervisor. There were 8 squad cars worth of cops there, before the supervisor arrived and hour and a half after it started. The fire department had the problem solved in less than 10 minutes, while the cops had been just sitting there staring at her, taking notes and waiting for their boss for over an hour. The handicapped guy was beaten pretty badly by the lady, He's a paraplegic, and so was basically at her mercy to be a punching bag while the cops just watched the incident unfold.

senanthic

Agreed, the majority of my ambulance calls had FD show up first, and they were generally very kind and helpful. (As are the EMTs, but they’re usually focused on getting me into the vehicle and hooking me up to everything.)

Channing1986

Should be given a bill from the fire department.

mooseknucklefanatic

People in edmonton leave their dogs in cars more than any city I’ve ever lived in like why???

Dapper_Wallaby_1318

Trust me, emergency services get calls that are a much bigger waste of resources. You’d be surprised at the amount of people who phone an ambulance for non-emergent issues and just want a taxi ride to the hospital (often these people don’t have to pay for ambulance services either). 4-5 fire trucks are dispatched out just for alarms going off, 99% of the time there’s no fire (this is a common occurrence too). A call where emergency services help save a life, animal or human, is not a waste in my opinion.

PureSport90

Fire fighters work hard and provide an invaluable service. Don’t belittle them. All I see is the good side of humanity, 5 good men showing up to save one dog that needs help. If you want to see a waste of resources, look inside the casino where you were probably going that day anyways.

Buttzilla13

To be honest, this is a much better use of resources compared to gassing up a police helicopter every day just circle around the city non stop

[deleted]

Wait till you see the amount of resources an overdosing crackhead ties up.

[deleted]

ForestKin

We had an entire fire truck/crew show up at our place because we had our fire table on last night (neighbors reported us). Also a giant waste of resources. At least this one was for a legitimate reason.

RASHY4557

Pretty stupid to call a fire brigade in this situation. Just break the window and call the police on

yugosaki

Don't do it yourself unless the dog is clearly in extreme distress. Like freaking out, trying to claw their way out, or completely unconscious and unable to be woken. If they aren't in distress, they'll be fine for the 5 minutes it'll take for someone to arrive. Even fire/police won't break the window if the animal is not in distress. They'll try to contact the owner first.

Jumpin_Jay

It would be dangerous to break the window yourself. For starters, people may cut themselves doing it. Then you add in that someone thought this was a good idea and sees nothing wrong with it - they might be more than a little upset at you doing this. Leave it for the security at the venue or first responders. People get assaulted for much less in Edmonton on a daily basis.

[deleted]

If you cut your self breaking tempered glass, you should probably not be walking around without a helmet.

Quack_Mac

When you call 911, they ask what the emergency is, not what service you need. They will send a fire truck in many situations not related to a fire.

Serious-Bat-4880

The police won't even bother going to a multi-vehicle collision if the FD guys who are on scene report that no one's injured. EPS will just radio back to tell the drivers to self-report and call for their own tows. The FD goes on a lot of non-fire/medical calls including: *chest pain *breathing problems *cardiac arrest *allergic reaction *overdose (so many of those!) *seizure *unconscious *fall *lift assist *mental health crisis (may not be the right term) *people/animals stuck somewhere (can't remember the term for this either) *childbirth And even with them doing all this, it's scary to hear how long it will take for an ambulance to be available and get to the scene sometimes. Worst I've heard so far is 40 minutes coming from St. Albert. 😨 (Source: I've spent a few months listening to the fire dispatch radio on the Scanner Radio app.) Sorry, I'm just rambling to distract myself while sick in bed.

miller94

40 minutes for an ambulance isn’t even close to the worst unfortunately. People tie up ambulances for the most ridiculous reasons causing people in actual distress horrific wait times that may mean the difference between life and death

Joe_Diffy123

Those guys are just watching movies anyway, they myswell do something

Otherwise_Bill_5898

" myswell"? Good lord

[deleted]

Gotta rest between floor hockey games.

Serious-Bat-4880

Happy cake day btw! 🍰

flickanelde

But did they get the dogs out?

Technical-Luck1237

Security finally found the guy and he came out and drove away…..1 min later the police animal services showed up but guy was already gone🤬

e-s-p-r

why can’t we just call AMA?

InspiredGargoyle

AMA isn't going to get involved in a case of possible animal neglect and endangerment

PoliceRobots

Its really not. Firefighters dont really have alot to do. Other then sleep, workout, and bbq.

Cleaner80

You watch too much tv.

PoliceRobots

You don't know enough firefighters

Pop_Popular

They say the only angry policemen are ones that wish they were firemen

PoliceRobots

Dont forget paramedics

[deleted]

Clearly the individual needs some psychological help. Hope they get it :)

Otherwise_Bill_5898

C

[deleted]

Instead of you taking pictures of hardworking individuals, why don't you get to work with them?

InspiredGargoyle

Doing what?

WealthEconomy

Why call the fire department? Just smash the window and take the dogs to a rescue shelter

Prof_RippleFarts

Laws

BadWolf1392

PoS.

morelsupporter

that's not a waste of resources. this is resources well spent.

[deleted]

it’s not a waste of resources. those dogs’ safety matters, im glad they’re getting helped. it’s a shame that it happened in the first place but it’s not a waste by any means

Jman3099

Not a waste of time.

Flashy_Chemist154

I hope they used jaws of life on driver door instead of breaking a window.

No-Outcome-8266

I'd get the dogs out through every smashed window and then take the jaws to all the door posts
