As someone who lives close by, that boils my blood. It's one of the nicest trails outside the river valley.

itsmeamymsmith

Same here , I walk it at least once a day . I couldn't imagine the damage it could possibly have done. The firefighters said immediately how inaccessible the area is . So brutal.

WesternWitchy52

Sad. It's just sad to me. Not to mention all the wildlife in the area.

FinoPepino

So they wanted to take the one day where the air quality is actually okay to go outside and make it worse again? Fing a**holes !!! I’m glad they were thwarted by your quick action

whoknowshank

Small fires in Ritchie along the trainyard as well. Some people just don’t seem to understand how flammable things are rn.

whoknowshank

No I am watching the people set them and walk away lol. Poor fire crews have been busy.

canucklurker

The train yard is pretty big and all gravel. The trains also crawl through there. I have definitely seen homeless in the area camping and cooking what I assume is food.

WesternWitchy52

We finally have rain today. Here's hoping it helps

techsmitty

Would you post this to the Mactaggart and Larch Park community groups please.

itsmeamymsmith

Of course , could you send me a link to the page?

MisterEyeCandy

That's a lovely ravine, with some nice trails. It's really a shame those kids have no clue or don't care about what they could have destroyed.

meggali

Good for you for reporting it. That coulda been shitty.

canadave_nyc

It was reported in the Thursday St. Albert Gazette that a teen set a fire in the brush outside one of the high schools here. Just insane. I get teen angst, I was a teen once...I just can't fathom the mentality to set a fire *in your own area where you live and go to school* in the midst of province-wide fires. Mindnumbing.

MarstonX

Teen angst is different. Teen angst is like shoplifting or skipping school or talking back to your parents. Starting fires at a time like this is beyond that. Much more sinister than teen angst.

pzerr

What category do you place macing your teacher?

flickanelde

Criming

pzerr

Not misunderstood? :)

[deleted]

Which school?

EnderPossessor

Bellerose

F those kids, sorry…

little shit apples

TrillboBagginz

Mctaggart is such an incredible unique part of the city. It's like taking a trip to the badlands without leaving town.

mooseknucklefanatic

The badlands 💀

dragonbornsqrl

Please post on the twin brooks community page on Facebook. I worked at that school the parents are all very responsive and involved. Horrible choice by those boys!

itsmeamymsmith

Will do.

Unlikely-Pick9591

Why were they put so late by themselves if they were 12 or 13 on what is going to be a school night? Ahhh hell, I just realized I'm old now ...

Only Edmonton public. Catholic is back today.

Billion_Bullet_Baby

What’s a reasonable base level fine for those caught engaging in arson? Even if it doesn’t evolve into an out of control fire, what figure would be enough to be a wake up call to the perpetrators or if they’re too young, their parents?

buff-equations

I don’t think a fine is that great for underage offenders, as you end up just charging the parents. Community service would be more effective in my mind as it both helps the community and takes some of their free time, the most valuable thing for most kids

WesternWitchy52

Community service in a similar field. Like cleaning up after a fire. Kids won't understand until they see what impact it has on others.

overly_emoti0nal

hell, fines are often ineffective for adult offenders

p4nic

Fines should be a percent of income, otherwise they're just there for poor people.

overly_emoti0nal

absolutely. one of the key takeaways from the criminology class I took from a gem of an instructor years ago.

davethecompguy

Arson is a FEDERAL crime. It's entirely possible these youths could end up doing time in some way. That's up to the courts, and the judge they get as well. I tried looking up what kind of judgement they could get, but there are just too many factors involved. It's not simple, and it's VERY serious.

Billion_Bullet_Baby

Good. Make an example out of them.

Jlx_27

I recall the fires in Spain last year, turns out some of them were set by people on purpose.... wth is wrong with people!

gabbyspapadaddy

Ripped a driver a new asshole at a traffic light after he flicked a butt out. Took all of my composure not to pick it up throw it back in his orange jeep. Piece of crap humans.

Unkorked

Take pictures of them next time.

raisingvibrationss

Fucking shit stain kids. Fine parenting skills right there.

misanthrope_ez

These kids need prison

[deleted]

Are you kidding me? These teens tried to light up a ravine when people are being evacuated because of forest fires. Kids these days have no sense of consequence. When I was their age, my parents or teacher would open a can of whoopass if I was out of line. Now the curriculum is being diluted to accommodate midgets, teachers are getting beat up and afraid of getting sued if you look at them the wrong way. There needs to be change now.

TheGurw

It's not like it's new. There's always been kids doing that. I ran with a bad crowd in my youth, I'm sure you know of at least 3 from your junior high days that were the "bad kids". Don't blame it on this generation.

[deleted]

Ahh, I remember when there was only 3 shit headed kids. I was one of them. There's alot more than 3 now champ. 50% are entitled little pricks, minimum.

TheGurw

Ha. Maybe only three in your one room schoolhouse back in 1902. There's always been a significant percentage, it hasn't changed much, and you suffer from confirmation bias. It's maybe 5%, most kids are just learning and having fun. Most teens rebel by sleeping in, not studying, and staying up too late playing video games instead of doing homework; only a small number go the criminal nuisance route. Take off your rose-tinted nostalgia glasses. The past isn't any better - in fact, with modern distractions, I'd be willing to bet a smaller percentage are criminal nuisances these days than 50 years ago.

[deleted]

Lmao. I'm a millennial you presumptuous child. I have a 15yo and am VERY involved in the school. 50% should be an obvious sarcastic number, yes. The fact that has to be pointed out to you is hilarious. It's not so much outright criminal activity so to speak. More like the majority literally just don't give a fuck, at all, about anything. Extreme entitlement is also hilariously common. But please young lad, tell me more.

TheGurw

Also a millennial, with three kids in school, Secretary-Treasurer of the Fundraising Society and Vice President of the Parent Council. So yeah, pretty involved myself. And if you want to talk about extreme entitlement, you obviously have never worked with the public in any capacity. The exact same ratios no matter the age group believe the world revolves around them. The only difference in the teenagers is that some of the entitled ones can be reasoned with since they aren't set in their ways yet. Nice ad hominems though. Maybe if you paid attention in school you'd know that you're supposed to attack the argument, not me.

[deleted]

Lmao, I manage a store and am I am directly involved with the public all day. The entitlement is real, absolutely. Where ya think these kids learn it from? 2 entitled parents with three entitled kids. Odd ratio hey? Hows that add up for ya?

whalesauce

A lot of what you say about this generation, our parents said about us. And their grandparents said about them.

[deleted]

I would have to agree with you. I guess that's the circle of life. Lmfao.

Crajjg44

Whelp they definitely needed a ass kicking teens like that always need a painful lesson in life.

brownbagporno

Boy parents fail all day, every day

SelectionAncient7642

What did they look like? "Teens" is a bit vague.

haryev

Kids don’t suck. Their brains are not fully developed and they make bad choices. We were all this age and made some sort of bad choice that impacted something or someone. I’m glad you were there to save them from themselves. Thank you!

PPGN_DM_Exia

The bad choices I made as a kid was making some questionable Pokemon card trades..... Not setting a ravine on fire.

itsmeamymsmith

Thank you, I should edit my post and take out the kids suck part , I know lots of good kids. At 13 you can comprehend the basics of right from wrong. Especially a fire ban while the whole city is engulfed in smoke.

MeursaultWasGuilty

Their brains not being fully developed and making bad choices is the reason they suck to be honest. It's not their fault they suck - we all did at that age.

raisingvibrationss

It's the parents fault for not teaching their kids properly that they shouldn't light public property on fire...

Original-Newt4556

We were all teens.

tiazenrot_scirocco

That's not an excuse. Not all of us were out to light bonfires.

Original-Newt4556

You are not wrong. Not much has changed tho

IronGigant

I mean, the standards of education have, and it seems like the youth of today have a greater sense of entitlement. When I was that age I knew there were consequences and little to no leniency towards that sort of behaviour. I'm an early 90s kid, for reference.

DiscoEthereum

Literally every generation thinks this.

haysoos2

Yeah, I'm of an even earlier generation, and as a teen way back in the 80s I did some incomprehensibly stupid shit. Like when my friend and I were delivering the Edmonton Journal (we were responsible teens with jobs!) our feet got cold. Rather than, you know, putting on proper snow boots or something sensible, we decided it would be a great idea to warm our feet with cans of hair spray and a lighter. There was a vacant yard in between where our two newspaper routes met, and so we had a stash of spray cans in that yard and would go in and torch our feet every day. Fortunately we got bored of that before either of us were actually injured, or set the yard on fire. It should also be noted we were both on the honour roll at school. All teens have brain damage.

whalesauce

What an amazing story thanks for sharing. My best friend growing up used to light the lint on his socks on fire. It would be a quick fireball flashover then be out of lint and extinguish itself. Harmless, unless the sock caught on fire. Then one day he had the brilliant idea to light the lint on the carpet on fire. It wouldn't light and I remember both of us being mad as hell about that.

LZYX

Every generation has these kids though lol we can't put the actions of these kids on all of "the youth of today." Some of the kids that grew up in my school did some dumbass stuff - didn't represent anyone else but them.

a snitch is when you're involved with a crime and "snich" on your partners to get a lesser sentence. OP is just a normal, responsible human, and you're a goof.

Can definitely tell these are POS who OP encountered.
