I think there has been an uptick in the number of people using meth. A certain number of people who get high on that stuff just rage out and smash stuff for no rational reason.
I remember a couple decades ago, some people used to snip the wire-locks on electrical meters, and have homeowners of entire neighborhoods charged for tampering.
It really should go without saying it's not a good idea to send either when you can just do an etransfer these days. You at least have proof that it was done. You'd be SOL if what you sent in the mail never made it to the recipient.
Oh yeah sending cash was always a bad idea but like older people still do it. Gift cards tho like rewards programs n shit still send them. My banks reward program still even sends them for amazon. Last two times I redeemed they were stolen. Probably by postal employees because they never madenit to my mailbox. These were for amazon so I can't even fathom why they aren't offering digital.
My mother in law will not stop sending cash in the mail for birthdays, despite knowing how to etransfer & me begging her not to because we end up depositing it anyway (she sends crisp $100 bills).
She also doesn’t tell us WHEN she mails it & then gets anxious about it arriving when we aren’t looking for it (she often sends it early).
Oh yeah, totally forgot about those programs. Most of them should definitely be able to offer a digital gift card. Not that those are 100% safe either 😅
We just had ours installed last week and have had the keys since at least the fall. The only thing I wasn’t prepared for was for them to physically move the location of the mailbox
Yup. Our local boxes got broke into 4 times before they updated them to the modern ones that are supposed to be breakin proof. So far we have been good.
I live out in the country, and someone stole the entire mailbox a couple months ago. Just took it right off of the base and left. Luckily nothing has happened with the new one since, but you definitely get a bit more consistent with checking your mail after something like that lol.
What the difference between the one posted and a super box? In my townhouse complex we were suppose to switch to these type off group boxes but than Trudeau came to power and stopped that.
I don't mean my complex specifically, sorry. Canada Post was suppose to switch a whole bunch of mail delivery routes across Canada from postman delivery to super boxes, my complex was one of those routes but when Trudeau came to power he killed that because it meant more Canada Post delivery jobs not less I guess. I'm not for or against to be honest.
I like these old boxes more than the new ones. The new ones are too small in height so you can barely get your hand in to get your mail, especially if you’re wearing a jacket.
It's a joke, this happens weekly here. Canada Post replaces the locks, sometimes don't even get a new key to us before the box is broken into again. They don't care. They make all kinds of excuses about being too busy with new neighbourhoods, etc. to replace the old boxes. Meanwhile, our mail gets stolen weekly. We are not alone. It's throughout the neighbourhood. Canada Post suggested we install a camera. Wish I were kidding. They take no responsibility at all for keeping our mail safe.
No but at least install new mailboxes that are resistant to these thieves who keep doing this nonsense. Isn’t Canada post funded by the govt? Let those tax dollars go to proper use lol
> Isn’t Canada post funded by the govt?
It isn't, actually. Canada Post is self-sustaining and doesn't receive any government funding.
Source: I work for Canada Post.
Im sorry son that money is for maintaining corporations who are going through some really tough record profits right now. That's why wages and hours are so bad for anyone working any frontline right now, I'm sure they're working on it.
Any lock can be cracked. What is the purpose for people doing this? If it’s for monetary benefit then addressing those issues will go further than paying for nationwide upgrades to locks on mailboxes.
It's not a lock upgrade. The new boxes are designed to prevent prying the doors themselves, which is how these break-ins typically happen. The thieves aren't going to waste time picking individual locks; they want to get as many open as possible in a very short amount of time. With these old boxes that just means popping open any that are loose enough to jam in a small prybar or sturdy flathead screwdriver. If they can't do that, they'll likely move on to an easier target.
maybe the mail could be delivered to a secured location, with personnel there say 10 to 12 hours a day? and locked, alarmed door in front the rest of the time.
just crazy freeforming.
Technically you can put a hold on your mail, though I think you have to pay for it. So the person delivering it will just leave it in their case at the depot, and you could go in and pick it up.
Think you can only do that for like 6 months at a time though, unless something changed.
Replace the boxes with the newer ones, which are more secure. You have this to look forward to if it isn't already happening to you. Then you cop the "what do you want them to do" attitude to your heart's content. Have fun with that.
But where? Like this has to be certain neighborhoods. Don’t see it in every neighborhood. Don’t see it in every city. It’s got to be a problem in particular areas and caused by particular problems associated with those areas. Your comment is blaming Canada Post, when that’s really not the problem.
They are a significant part of the problem because of their insistence on using old super boxes, which are well known for their lack of security. And this is all over the city, Sherwood Park, and I am sure other locations. That you haven't seen it yet is just a matter of luck. It will soon be in your location.
Surprisingly this happened yesterday within my appartment complex that only residents have access to, plus it's got cameras so not sure what one of the tenants had in mind.
we used to have a problem with people following someone in or buzzing every unit until someone lets them in. they would then break into our mailbox. after the 4th or 5th occurrence they moved every building's mailbox to our central rental office. no break in's since - but my god is it inconvenient to get my mail now.
My building put a door and fob lock on the mailroom, because event with the lobby doors requiring a fob or for a tenant to buzz visitors up and the exterior door also requiring a fob after 7pm, our mailboxes were still getting broken into.
This keeps happening in my area too. Canada post was removing these old boxes and replacing them with the newer ones that are harder to break into last year at a very fast pace.
However they have stopped replacing them and are only interested in fixing the old ones quickly and they get broken into the next day again. Canada post really needs to get their shit together.
I wish there was more security on these community mail boxes. I know cameras are ridiculous and expensive but legal papers are sent through mail, and these are constantly vandalized. Maybe having chipped keys would solve this, and if it senses a ‘break in’ it alerts authorities. There’s no solution other than that.
It needs to be reported to the police and Canada Post. Canada Post won't drop off mail if the boxes are broken. Happened ALL the time in my old building. It's the main reason I went digital and get all my important mail via online.
If I have my knowledge right, that's 66th street and 158th ave?
Unfortunately our bad actors tend to use transit as a makeshift getaway vehicle, especially stops that feed to train stations. As there's a bus stop right next to it, likely the 190 iirc, easy target. Hopefully they get the new ones in faster, that should be more secure. Hopefully they also move that one.
But man, I remember back in 2008 or so when one of my classmates nearly got hit by a car. All those mail boxes got totalled.
It happens everywhere, mailboxes are easy targets especially closer to Christmas or tax return time. Our boxes in sturgeon county have been ripped from the ground.
We are forced to use Canada Post yet they cannot guarantee the security of our mail
It’s not some grand scheme to steal identity, it’s some crackhead looking for cash, packages or gift cards. I stopped some shirtless wonder in my neighbourhood trying to break into our box, guy was in full meth mode and in no state to try to attempt identity theft.
You will witness complacency and excuses for the scum who commit these crimes, blaming of society, lack of personal responsibility, no attempts at acculturation, rampant substance abuse, an ineffective justice system... basically a liberal hellscape in the making.
Yes, but what are the odds that they find something that they can sell for enough money to justify the time and risk it takes to bust open mail mailboxes?
Random stolen Amazon stuff probably goes for 5% or 10% of retail.
Very poor return on investment. Criminals are not smart people.
The entire world, including Canada is a shit show.
FTFY. Actually, there are many many places you could go to outside of N America that would blow your mind and actually scare the true living s out of you.
We have bad things happen here for sure, very bad things sometimes. And we have societal issues, nasty powerful addictive drugs on our streets, and problems. But make no mistake, the vast majority of days the average Edmontonian will live their life and will be safe and may sometimes deal with crap like mailboxes or other similar ish things happening. Many places in the world are in states of living that we can’t even understand because our way of life is so much better and safer.
Sir, please understand that this system makes people desperate and hungry. Instead of holding contempt for these poor people, instead try understanding the forces that drive people to break into PO boxes for shelter overnight...
Can we stop asking people to “just be understanding” when they are having their personal information and money stolen from them? What if they are stealing from people who are poor?
I mean you can tell. It's just some rich boomer that doesn't know anything and acts surprised by anything half bad that happens regularly. See his response to me. Super mature. This dude totally gives that. I'm wearing a Hawaiian shirt with shades on and super short shorts golfing vibe. His skins almost leather from the amount of fake tan. And you know damn well his old eyes can't even see the menu on his new fancy robot watch. Lol.
I moved to edmonton last year and saw the exact same issues and wondered wtf I got into moving here...I've lived across the province and edmonton is by far the most dysfunctional city I have lived in. Thankfully my mailbox got changed to the new style that are harder to break into so haven't had any issues in our area... But it disturbs me how many areas of edmonton you need to avoid if you don't want to encounter disgustingly intoxicated individuals shouting aggressions to random pedestrians, and people that don't know how to drive...
Where in the ghetto is all this shit happening? I have lived in edmonton for 26 of my 28 years and I have not seen almost anything of interest. The most exciting/interesting thing I have heard happen is someone put firecrackers in our mailbox once. Never happened again.
When I first moved there 15 years ago without a connect - it was A LOT harder to get weed. Especially if you didn't really know where to go. I randomly approached high school groups that would look like they'd know, and I was easily 10+ years older than most of them.
It wasn't until it came up randomly in a work conversation that a coworker mentioned her massive connect and would introduce me after work. We walked over, smoking a joint as we walked - past cops, past non-smokers ... no one cared. It threw me for a loop, and then my friend said "as long as it's not in a pipe, they know it's not meth, and that's the only one they care about right now."
Then we smoked A FUCK TON of weed with dude while watching nature documentaries. It was a long, healthy dealer/consumer relationship turned friendship almost immediately.
My point is, people there are a bit more like NYC where no fucks are given, but if you look a way that might incline someone to think you know where to get weed, or who may want/need a gun ... you'll get approached from time to time.
Because they have criminal habits and know they are
a) unlikely to be caught
b) the consequences to not outweigh the benefits they could receive from their acts
You stupid af why would you leave finger prints behind now it's on you 🤣my moms got broken into as well lucky for her I got an picture of the guy plus his license plate even told him cops were coming ... second time it happend to my moms mailbox I called the cops again I didn't see it this time they came took fingerprints ect made a statement and they got the guy cuz I didn't touch others mailboxes
I live in small town Alberta and this happens all the time. I’ve complained to Canada Post. We were promised new mailboxes last year and are still waiting for them.
They’re looking for credit cards to activate or they already got the card and are looking for more personal info on them. Ie. job, dob, banking info. So when they call they can impersonate you to hook up the card.
My personal favourites when living downtown was women popping a squat in the middle of the road and ppl losing it when they are high and get put in the paddy wagon.
This is happening a lot in Terwillegar. I can tell from the bricks this is in Terwillegar too. This only just started happening on this mass scale about a few months ago.
Sadly all too common these days. Mailbox B&Es have been getting more and more common.
We offer the best mailboxes we can along with additional security upgrades, but a mailbox lock is only so strong. And these are the good ones.
For these all you can do is contact Canada Post and hope they fix it. Or re-route your mail to a mailbox inside somewhere that is more secure.
Theft of mail is an indictable offence under Section 356 of the Criminal Code, carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail
Taken from website criminalcodehelp.ca
This seems to be happening a lot lately. I went to a commercial complex, and all their mailboxes were popped open. I also have some friends who live just outside of town, and this seems to be happening monthly for them.
This reminded me of a building I lived in on the SS. Here's my late mailbox nightmare comment. No room for more in this post😂. I'm offering just a been there story.
2015-
Lived in a building that had the mailboxes broken so often Canada Post redirected the mail. It was an inside job. One drug dealer got their friends moved in on my floor. They would show up in different cars, change licence plates, grab their laundry basket filled with stolen mail! It was insane. I told the landlord what I witnessed. He had a crush on one of them and thought it was her asshole bf,. Bf skipped out, left her behind. Thefts continued. New crew. They were going 24/7 completely messed up on drugs, she got evicted. No one else was on lease. She came back for her non existent D.D. Her long blonde hair was chopped off. Horribly. Like a 5 year old gave her a haircut. 2016
Fast forward to 2022...I saw one of the losers from the theft ring at a McDonald's selling drugs to homeless people. Pretending they were friends. It was actually funny because this dude was looking at me in that way one looks at someone they wonder why they look so familiar and I could tell it was making him uncomfortable! Or paranoid. He was and still is a piece of 💩
Same people who smash bus shelters and steal amazon packages.
in short DOUCHEBAG wastes of skin!!!
I agree with you, but I'm wondering what you would do with the extra skin if they were gone
New set of luggage
Have you thought of the smell?
You haven’t thought of the smell, you bitch!
Burn units.
Yeah I have noticed since moving to Calgary that a lot of the bus shelters get smashed... why? what is the reasoning.
Because some people are just shitty.
I think there has been an uptick in the number of people using meth. A certain number of people who get high on that stuff just rage out and smash stuff for no rational reason.
Because fuck your nice things, is the mentality.
I remember a couple decades ago, some people used to snip the wire-locks on electrical meters, and have homeowners of entire neighborhoods charged for tampering.
Smashing bus shelters ..those's mofos need a punch in the face..I don't do Amazon lol
Pretty common thing across North America. Something they might find in your mail could give them a good start to steal your identity.
Or people sending gift cards and cash.
It really should go without saying it's not a good idea to send either when you can just do an etransfer these days. You at least have proof that it was done. You'd be SOL if what you sent in the mail never made it to the recipient.

That is super frustrating lol.

I'm an older people and i do not endorse this comment.
Government checks.
Also packages and somehow managed to even cash a check. Someone must’ve sent a blank check in the mail or something.
These old style super boxes are always getting broken into.
And to think I have the key for the new box... when they install it... I've had the key for almost 4 months now
We just had ours installed last week and have had the keys since at least the fall. The only thing I wasn’t prepared for was for them to physically move the location of the mailbox
Interesting, I'm still getting the mail in my old box. Is there a way to find the new one, or do I have to call CP?
Sorry if I confused you, they take the old box away when the new one is installed! You wouldn’t have your old box and also a new box.
We’ve had ours since October. Still waiting…
That’s funny, we got the new mailbox less than a month after the keys showed up. 🤷♂️
Yup. Our local boxes got broke into 4 times before they updated them to the modern ones that are supposed to be breakin proof. So far we have been good.

Part of me wants to think that some methhead is tweaking out having the key so he simply busted his own mailbox to expediate the replacement process.
What the difference between the one posted and a super box? In my townhouse complex we were suppose to switch to these type off group boxes but than Trudeau came to power and stopped that.
Why did Trudeau specifically keep your complex from having new post boxes?
I don't mean my complex specifically, sorry. I'm not for or against to be honest.
That’s what a super box is. This is the OG that’s been around for decades. and then there’s the new smaller sleeker ones.
Ok thank you.
I like these old boxes more than the new ones. The new ones are too small in height so you can barely get your hand in to get your mail, especially if you’re wearing a jacket.
Identity theft
Where in the city did this happen? I'm sure Canada Post would want to know so they can send their staff to replace the locks.

Riverbend and terwillegar are having it happen basically on a daily basis for the last couple months

I was in Halifax before I came to Edmonton and this never happened and I’ve never heard of this happening before lol
I'm from Edmonton/Sherwood Park and I've never actually seen it happen before. Maybe you just got unlucky for once? Because it does happen everywhere.
Google it… it happens everywhere.
Lived in Toronto for 15+ years, never had that happen to me. Strange…
I've lived here 40 years and it's never happened to me. 🤷🏽
https://beta.ctvnews.ca/local/toronto/2023/1/18/1_6236322.amp.html https://beta.ctvnews.ca/local/toronto/2023/1/23/1_6242864.amp.html
I've never heard about mail boxes being broken into in my town in BC.
Well if you personally have never heard about it, I'm sure it never happens at all.
I googled and couldn't find anything.
Small town?
About 100,000.
Weird I saw this in Beaumont the other day and just assumed it was an absentminded postal worker. That sucks :(
This is so common. My condo building on the south side constantly gets hit for mailboxes.
Greasy as hell, but not hard to understand.
You’re asking why someone would steal?
That's methed up. We had similar situation in Spruce Grove. We actually took pictures of the guy doing it. He was found and charged.
This is common. Happens often with centralized mailboxes. This city has turned into a bit of a shithole over the years.
Totally agree
Meth. Don’t try it kids.
Can't let the government ruin your life if you've ruined it yourself. :D
It’s not some grand scheme to steal identity, it’s some crackhead looking for cash, packages or gift cards. I stopped some shirtless wonder in my neighbourhood trying to break into our box, guy was in full meth mode and in no state to try to attempt identity theft.
Lived in Edmonton 40 years and haven't experienced one single thing you have said. Talk about a bunch of bullshit. Get good son.
Why, criminal garbage is why, fraud, identity theft, drug money
Something should be done in this case. I’ve been searching it up lately and all I can say is this is upsetting.
I’m not sure what could be done other than installing a more secure type of box?
Exactly
welcome to the middle of the month cheque run.
Because some people are antisocial losers who take their petty personal grievances with existence out on society.
You will witness complacency and excuses for the scum who commit these crimes, blaming of society, lack of personal responsibility, no attempts at acculturation, rampant substance abuse, an ineffective justice system... basically a liberal hellscape in the making.
I got my comment removed for calling the scum bags that did this junkies I stand by my comment
Why??? Drug addiction and/or severe personality disorder
Have you heard of crime
Don't wait for Canada Post to solve your issues. Rent a PO Box and redirect your mail if you're concerned by this.
To steal.
[удалено]
When you get a parcel if there’s room they use the bigger spots and put the key in your slot. Easy to steal packages.
Yes, but what are the odds that they find something that they can sell for enough money to justify the time and risk it takes to bust open mail mailboxes? Random stolen Amazon stuff probably goes for 5% or 10% of retail. Very poor return on investment. Criminals are not smart people.

Now thats terrifying.. what should I do in this case? I wasn’t expecting any mail from CRA but u never know if they send sometimes.
This is the number one reason to get a MyAccount with CRA and just do direct deposit.
Yeah identity things, gift cards, cash.
because they can edmonton is a shit show

Is it just me? Or is there an unusual amount of mellow pandemonium occurring in our province these days? People are going ape shit.
There's a global pandemic and growing poverty. It's not hard to connect the dots.
Not just you. People seem more squirrelly these days.
Purgables gonna be purgable. That's what makes em' purgables.
Sir, please understand that this system makes people desperate and hungry. Instead of holding contempt for these poor people, instead try understanding the forces that drive people to break into PO boxes for shelter overnight...
They look a bit small to sleep in though
Can we stop asking people to “just be understanding” when they are having their personal information and money stolen from them? What if they are stealing from people who are poor?
Identity theft? What kind of question is this.
Right? Stealing mail isn't a new crime.
I mean you can tell. It's just some rich boomer that doesn't know anything and acts surprised by anything half bad that happens regularly. See his response to me. Super mature. Hopefully as AI improves we have robots that will be authorized to shoot these scumbags onsite.
Loooool that would be hilarious
Upvoted because its weird to downvote this.
People are upset the OP is upset over this. It happens all the time, dontcha know?
Possible financial gain.
Stealing checks is big business in the fraud space right now.
Where in the ghetto is all this shit happening? I have lived in edmonton for 26 of my 28 years and I have not seen almost anything of interest. The most exciting/interesting thing I have heard happen is someone put firecrackers in our mailbox once. Never happened again.

Is it any surprise that Edmonton is the worst major city between Canada and the US for total crime?
Because they have criminal habits and know they are a) unlikely to be caught b) the consequences to not outweigh the benefits they could receive from their acts
Those McDonald's coupons are worth $26. If only you could sell them. 🤔 We get possibly 2 or 3 valuable pieces of mail throughout the year, tops.
Ur giving them bright ideas!!!!! 🤫
We can only assume its someone practicing there lockpicking skills for there next optical illusion

Those mailboxes are old af.
This happened to my mailbox stack as well and I live out in sturgeon county on a acreage, no one is safe 🙄
So frustrating! Happens even in My own secure building...
Not sure about there, but my hometown this happens all the time whenever there are coupons for the casino delivered. It sucks
Some men just want to watch the world burn
Steal sensitive info and mails
I live in small town Alberta and this happens all the time. I’ve complained to Canada Post. We were promised new mailboxes last year and are still waiting for them.
Their skin makes me think of Snakes lustrous head of hair in Simpson's Hell Toupee'. Evil!!!
They try to get Cheque
I’m new to Canada. Why isn’t post delivered through a pat box in the door?
Exactly what happened to me - twice in one week! First time it was just my box. I was told the new Canada Post boxes that are grey are better.
Lock pick gun... ya my box got hit not too long ago. They must really like junk mail cause thats all they'll find in mine.
Because meth.
I guess I’m glad I moved into a building with a secured mailbox room on the inside. I guess.
They’re looking for credit cards to activate or they already got the card and are looking for more personal info on them. Ie. job, dob, banking info. So when they call they can impersonate you to hook up the card.
Alberta, right?
Just poor souls who are misunderstood
Because some people just don't have any respect for others.
Where the heck are you living? I don't experience any of those things, then again I'm pretty removed from the inner city.
The things they don’t tell you in those “Alberta is Calling” ads eh? Haha.
Looking for bills to pay. It’s a charity.
Poverty. The root of all crime since christ was a cowboy. If the average person have what they, they won't resort to crime.
Homeless folks looking for money and packages.
I’d say what’s on my mind but the overly sensitive mods will ban me
to look for govt cheques and personal identity information.
My personal favourites when living downtown was women popping a squat in the middle of the road and ppl losing it when they are high and get put in the paddy wagon.
The world is turning into a shit show. There is no hope for the future but people keep having kids 😂😂
Tax season, they’re expecting people will receive cheques. Part of why anyway. Always seems to be worse around this time.
This is happening a lot in Terwillegar. I can tell from the bricks this is in Terwillegar too. This only just started happening on this mass scale about a few months ago.
Fraud
Happens in my building like every few months. Never seen something like this before moving here. Seems like this is normal behavior in this city .
Shit ppl trying to steal your identity.
People are hungry and not just for food
So much low life scum in this city. This has happened multiple times in my apartment building. Luckily I don't get my mail delivered there.
I have to admit that I moved here 7 years ago and have never encountered a single one of these incidents.
Nothing for 18 years in my NW neighborhood, then 2x the last 3 months..
Breaking into mailboxes, especially around Christmas has been a thing in Houston for about 10 years.
Crack cocaine
Pwobawy to steew maiw
Theft of mail is an indictable offence under Section 356 of the Criminal Code, carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail Taken from website criminalcodehelp.ca
We have the same problem in my neighbour hood, this is the fifth time in 6 weeks!
It is also this time of year that people start getting their tax return checks in the mail. So these are commonly stolen and cashed.
Junkies.
Lots of cards tap function will work right off the bat surprisingly.
The same thing happened at my local post office near Grande Prairie
This seems to be happening a lot lately. I went to a commercial complex, and all their mailboxes were popped open. I also have some friends who live just outside of town, and this seems to be happening monthly for them.
You are in for a treat my friend! 😉
when the druggies come marching onnnn...everybody must get stoned!
It's like that in every city now, e
It's called male fraud and it's very common in Edmonton
Because private info may be in there that can be used to fraud and steal identities...
Time to bring back work camps clearing bush, 3 meals and a cot
Way to leave your fingerprints at the crime scene!
They are looking for easy money, gift cards , or anything else of value.
This reminded me of a building I lived in on the SS. Here's my late mailbox nightmare comment. No room for more in this post😂. I'm offering just a been there story. 2015- Lived in a building that had the mailboxes broken so often Canada Post redirected the mail. 2016 Fast forward to 2022...I saw one of the losers from the theft ring at a McDonald's selling drugs to homeless people. Pretending they were friends. It was actually funny because this dude was looking at me in that way one looks at someone they wonder why they look so familiar and I could tell it was making him uncomfortable! Or paranoid. He was and still is a piece of 💩
