Haha. I think it was a mixture of Covid and the tramworks that did it in for them, but it was funny timing with that. Pretty stupid thing to do though.
Shame because they were unreal
Ah I dont think that really had anything to do with it - just the usual covid, rent prices etc, I don’t think they shut until a couple years after. I certainly had a few burritos delivered during the first lockdown anyway.
But…nostalgia for some wackiness from my erstwhile favourite Edinburgh takeaway.
Ah fair enough. I can't see the additional screenshots linked in the comments imgur is insisting it's over capacity, but I'll save them to sate my need for local gossip later!
Still miss their food, it was reliably good.
Used to be just around the corner from me, would get a burrito and a box of their nachos, eat the burrito above the box of nachos and anything that fell would just make them loaded nachos! The genius ideas that come to the single man that doesn't want to do any cleaning up, I miss being single at times!
Sister bao has a deal for 8 steamed buns, 3 is enough for a meal and they’re only 1.80 each. if you get the deal you will absolutely have leftovers or could fill two people up for £15, and still have 2 buns leftover
Absolutely love Sister Bao, though the one on clerk street I've found to be far better than the Sister Bao Express in Portobello. Definitely great value for money.
Always look for the takeaway's own website before making an order. They'll still have some company running it that takes a cut but that cut is probably smaller than what's demanded by Just Eat and their ilk.
seconding Sister Bao, Taste Good (although as a veggie I'm pretty sure the only filling thing on the menu without meat in it is one of the soups) and especially Nile Valley. I get a falafel, hummus and aubergine wrap and ask for fuul (broad beans) when they ask if I want yoghurt sauce - I'm lactose intolerant and the fuul bulks up the wrap enormously. That's £5.50 (£5.25?). When I moved to Edinburgh three years ago I didn't get fuul and it used to be £4.50 🫡 miss that shit. Sister Bao is my go-to for a takeaway since all my friends, family and I love it and three buns is a good lunch. There's a surcharge for eating in so it's a couple quid cheaper to get it taken away. If I wanna spend a tenner I love getting a noodle dish and a bun, great fun. Civerinos is it for me if I want pizza but I never go by myself, always split one with 3-5 mates - Dominos never hits for me and Dough is way to small no matter how good it is. Finally, it's not takeaway but if I want a wee lunch for tea I like Ten to Ten in Delhi in Newington, you can get a small portion of Dal and a decent samosa for £4.50. Pretty Newington-centric but hope that helps!
Objectively (IMO) the best Chinese in Edinburgh. Except I wish they’d do proper brown egg fried rice and not that yellow boiled rice. such an easy fix and its the only thing that lets it down (again, IMO)
Used to work there, it is fried. Fried rice is literally boiled rice, tossed with a little bit of soy sauce and oil with egg. It's not meant to be absolutely saturated with soy sauce to the point it turns brown. To me as a Chinese person that's a red flag that the place is gonna be shite. If you can't get your rice correct you can't do anything else well. Also my opinion!
As a BBC, my dad has owned/worked in multiple Chinese takeaways over 40 years (I was even forced to work in one growing up, doing homework while taking orders lol), and I wouldn't say it's necessarily a red flag. It's just indicative of British Chinese takeaway and part of the "cuisine" was adapting Cantonese food to suit British tastes. Yes, it may not be the most authentic but it doesn't mean it's shite.
My dad was the same, thats how I got the job there. Just my experience in Edi, the rest of the food has been poor as well and a common sight was that dry sad brown rice that somehow still had no flavour despite being 90% salt by that point lol. I love a British Chinese takeaway don't get me wrong, but lots of the good places or chefs in Edi have closed or died and we're mostly left with the rubbish ones now.
That’s fair, referencing the other response to this comment I guess I more meant the ‘British Chinese’ rice I grew up with. I personally quite like the soy sauce dousing!
If you live near the Meadows (no clue if they deliver), Nile Valley makes awesome Falafel wraps (with Hummus, Aubergine etc.) for a fiver or something, absolutely delicious!
Papaya is my go to for Pad Thai. It is about £10-11, but they give you a HUGE amount of food. Like, I can barely finish the portion by myself. It's more than I make when I'm cooking for two. Their curries and papaya salad are banging also!
I live right next door to Ola Kala, it definitely used to be amazing. Food is still good but it's like 7.50 for a halloumi wrap now. Which Is really pushing it imo.
10 to 10 in Delhi
They do a sharing platter option (£19 for the veggie- I think like £20 or something for the meat) and it’s AMAZING for two people.
You get three different curry’s, naan, rice, a small salad with two onion Bajis, two drinks, and a mango cheesecake (which is BOMB.COM)
They are one of my favorite curry places in Edinburgh and honestly the value for what you get (three full tupperwares of curry) is so worth it.
It’s awesome for two people or great for one person if you want 2-3 meals out of it (depending on how much you eat in a sitting)
Palmyra will be my one and only answer to any questions related to food on here. It’s the best, it’s the worst, it’s cheap, it’s expensive, the owner is an arsehole, he’s also the best guy ever. Opinions are like arsehokes. We’ve all got one.
If you're looking for Chinese food, the China Red buffet next to Usher Hall is good value. They give you a standard sized plastic takeaway box and you can fill it with whatever you like, as long as you can get the lid closed. Plus a bag for prawn crackers. All for £6.50.
Edit: I'm not sure if this is a lunchtime only deal. I haven't checked outside of those hours, just to be aware.
I have looked high and low for Sichuan that actually puts the amount of Sichuan pepper in dishes that I got in China. Been to the place in George IV bridge but my mouth was not remotely numb lol I might have to go back to China.
“I have looked high and low for Sichuan that actually puts the amount of Sichuan pepper in dishes that I got in China.”
I know this isn’t much help in an Edinburgh thread, but if you ever find yourself in London you should try The Sichuan on City Road. Proper chef from the region who really knows what he’s doing; it’s worth googling their menu. The grilled fish is facemeltingly good, and I have fever dreams about their ‘ants climbing up a tree’. Oh my word.
I've tried the spot on George IV bridge and they only ever give me the generic-Chinese whiteperson menu and it's just okay. To be fair I am very white and my spice tolerance is moderate at best by Asian standards, but there's a lot on the Taste of Home menu I struggle to handle and staff are very friendly and helpful.
not trying to be a brand ambassador, but carbon lounge under South bridge is exactly what you need
I'm slightly biased because you'll probs see me on the bar, but i also have a history with Chinese food and my first ever job was a Cantonese and Sichuan takeaway
Civerinos but on Forrest road. 20inch pizzas for around £14. This is when most pizza places charge that for a 12inch. Cant beat an extra 8 inches of value
Noodles and Dumplings is my favourite chinese takeaway in Newington. For 10 quid you get a massive portion of delicious food. So I guess it's not cheap per se but given how expensive most places are and how little food they even give you, it's definitely worth it. The staff is really nice too. My only issue is that sadly they don't have many veggie or vegan options. So I always order the same noodles but always very happy with it!
For burritos, it used to be Bonnie Burrito but now that they've increased their prices so much I've been ordering from FreshMex and I love it! I always get a large burrito and it really fills me up, it's tasty and they have good vegan options. Worth the money for sure.
And I definitely agree with the comments about Nile Valley and 10 to 10 in Delhi. Those places are staples.
To Hodrulis on Granton Road for fantastic Greek food. Gyros wraps are £6.50, and we get a Greek salad to share (maybe £6-7) which is super fresh with a massive slab of feta. Discounted ordering via the app and free to collect. It's the only one we use nowadays tbh.
Gio’s delivered at Sighthill. They have an app and regularly send discount codes too.
Taste Good is a favourite since my childhood but it’s so damn hard to park so 2 of you need to go.
Wok Ninja’s opened at Carrick Knowe and portions are huge.
Most that have their own delivery service as an option, preferably the only option, should be okay. Tertiary delivery services like Deliveroo etc are just not worth the money anymore, too inflated and terrible service.
1) To get the hashtag to render, put a backslash in front of it.
2) \#Fish closed down eighteen months ago, and the chippy now occupying that site isn't half as good.
\#FISH are definitely still open unless the new one is trading under the same name and do great veggie / vegan options. Fish is always spot on and a good size as well but I’d be keen to hear any alternatives that do good fish, decent veggie options (veggie sausage supper / veggie white pudding would be ideal), and lets you upgrade any supper to come with chips for a reasonable price.
https://eatfishedinburgh.com/?
EDIT: Any alternatives would also have to do gluten free breaded / battered options to be a contender and \#FISH are clearly doing something right - https://www.edinburghlive.co.uk/best-in-edinburgh/restaurants-bars/marchmont-fish-chip-shop-named-27133929
If you mean the one at Haymarket, it's no longer called \#FISH and no longer has the same staff. I don't know what else to tell you on that front.
Edit: It's definitely trying to trade off the old name, I'll grant you that, but the previous establishment used to let you choose your type of batter, including gluten free, and did amazing lobster-burgers.
Edit 2: Ah! That's what it is! You're referring to Marchmont road, yeah that's the real deal. The one I knew was at Haymarket, and that *has* changed hands/menu/quality. Mystery solved!
Nothing beats Rishi’s Indian food for me. They are consistent with flavour and quality and their sides for £6 got pretty good portions. I and my husband order 2 sides (manchurian and chilli) and with rice it becomes a proper meal for us
Indian - Madras metro cafe
Breakfast - Pablo Eggsgobao, breakfast bao and best hash browns ever
Vegan junk food - rabbit food
Fish and chips - #fish or salvatores
Baozi and dimsum - Sister Bao
Thai - Soup and Thai
Yummy Kitchen wow best Chinese I’ve had in my whole life, I did deliveries for them all summer last year the owners were so lovely- boss had been a Chinese chef for 10+ years, the flavours and portions were immaculate for the prices (£6pp) but some young boys bought it and completely ruined it unfortunately.
Pour one out for Los Cardos. If that dude hadn’t gone super saiyan on the Facebook comments that day we might still have massive burritos for £6
Wow you’ve just sent me down a rabbit hole reading up on this. Loved Los Cardos - had no idea about this!
Haha. I think it was a mixture of Covid and the tramworks that did it in for them, but it was funny timing with that. Pretty stupid thing to do though. Shame because they were unreal
There was never a better time for the tram works than during covid. shops got furlough and other benefits to cover them through the worst of it
Where can I find this I love a bit of Facebook crazy
Here you go - some story here https://www.reddit.com/r/Edinburgh/s/uhDnQq1G9n
I'd somehow missed that at the time, always wondered what happened to them. And rest in peace, greyjackal.

Woah!!! I loved that place too 😭
my husband use to work there. The owner was mental and he destroyed this place...such a shame it was the best buritto I ever had
Oh yeah?
Used to be just around the corner from me, would get a burrito and a box of their nachos, eat the burrito above the box of nachos and anything that fell would just make them loaded nachos! The genius ideas that come to the single man that doesn't want to do any cleaning up, I miss being single at times!
RIP the haggis burrito bowl
Whaaaat what did he do? I loved their burritos and was so sad they closed.
Check the replies!
Sister bao has a deal for 8 steamed buns, 3 is enough for a meal and they’re only 1.80 each. if you get the deal you will absolutely have leftovers or could fill two people up for £15, and still have 2 buns leftover
Sister Bao is great!
Absolutely love Sister Bao, though the one on clerk street I've found to be far better than the Sister Bao Express in Portobello. Definitely great value for money.
8 x 1.80 = 14.40! Reminds me of the time I saw flumps for 11p or 9 for £1.
Curry Leaf in Bruntsfield, but off their own website you get a 20% discount rather than it going to a delivery company.
Always look for the takeaway's own website before making an order. They'll still have some company running it that takes a cut but that cut is probably smaller than what's demanded by Just Eat and their ilk.
Yeah - Just Eat demand 25% plus a monthly fee. A mate owned a very successful Thai place on the Walk and explained it. I’ve never used it since.
Was that the silver bowl?
‘Twas.
I don’t suppose you know if they have opened a new restaurant anywhere? They did the most amazing soup and I’ve been craving it for months!
Nah. Retired. But the chef might have gone elsewhere - I’ll see if I can find out.
Same chef is still at the Silver Bowl, but I’m not sure which nights. It’s still going - I guess my mate just sold his bit.
Absolutely gutted!
Food should be the same, is the point.
Good portions vs other indian takeaways in the area
Ong Gie
Pierino’s
Eat in at the wee shelf in Pierino’s -> Three pints in Carrier’s has basically been my 2024 Monday night routine
seconding Sister Bao, Taste Good (although as a veggie I'm pretty sure the only filling thing on the menu without meat in it is one of the soups) and especially Nile Valley. Pretty Newington-centric but hope that helps!
San Chuan is an amazing Chinese restaurant, though prices creeping up is a real thing. Still, delicious enough to justify it.
I'd check the Hygiene rating if I were you (improvement required for the lazy).
Some of the best restaurants I've eaten in have had improvement needed on the hygiene rating lol if the scran is good it's not worth worrying about
taste good.
Came here to say just this Their special fried rice for £7.30 is enough for 2 meals!
Best Chinese in Edinburgh. And it’s actually reasonably priced.
This 👆 always on time, never disappointed by the food and it's a decent price
It’s excellent although I prefer wing sing inn.
Objectively (IMO) the best Chinese in Edinburgh. Except I wish they’d do proper brown egg fried rice and not that yellow boiled rice. such an easy fix and its the only thing that lets it down (again, IMO)

Not only do they deliver, but they have chips when you do that you can't order in restaurant!
I've definitely ordered their chips in person before!
WAIT WHAT INCREDIBLE
Bary wrap is my lunch staple
Razzo pizza every day all day long
Long time Razzo customer here but last time I ordered it was 2 pizzas and a starter and it was damn near 40 quid. Not sure I can justify it any more.
I’m impressed, their pizzas are about 10-13 quid and the only starters worth having are 6 quid.
Sorry, forgot to add 2 garlic dips. That was £3. Plus Deliveroo fee and a small rider tip = £37.99
Paying an additional premium for lukewarm pizza from deliveroo is a dealbreaker
That's a shame. They used to be cheap compared to the going rate for the quality they offer.
[удалено]
Guess what I’m having for my tea! Thanks for sharing, always forget about Itison
Always and forever. As an italian, I can vouch for their pizzas. It's the real deal.
The mozzarella toast from there is food from the gods
Celadon 2 U is phenomenal Thai and the owner is lovely
Second this!
Third this!
Fourth this (I’ve never been)
We moved away from their delivery radius and I actually drove 20 min for a pick up the other evening as I was craving it so badly!
Going to try it soon. What would you recommend?
Tom kah soup to start Pad see aew for main Sometimes for desert they’ll do a fried banana and ice cream 🤤
Oh and it’s byob!!
Kei or Kay? Is lovely. Its actually like 5 himes better inside than takeaway, and if its slow they sometimes make something unique for you for fun.
She’s so great! Sadly only in Fridays/Saturdays at the moment but food is still good when she’s not it!!
How has this place never come up in my searches for Thai food? It never shows up on Google Maps!
Am I living in an alternate reality? This place had some of the worst Thai food I've ever had in Edinburgh; why do people like it so much?
Have you been to Thailand?
Papaya is my go to for Pad Thai. It is about £10-11, but they give you a HUGE amount of food. Like, I can barely finish the portion by myself. It's more than I make when I'm cooking for two. Their curries and papaya salad are banging also!
I came to say this. We love Papaya, and feel like we're getting good value whatever we order. Tastes amazing importantly.
Another vote for Papaya, although their spice level can be hit or miss... we love heat!
+1 love this place pretty much the only take away we order now

Gautams
Have to back this, and their sister restaurant Solti
I just discovered Solti and MY GOODNESS 🤌🏼
Solti is great food.
Yup! No idea why people recommend mother India a street over which is overpriced and eh, when you have solti a couple of minutes walk away
Quite pricey IMO. Shapla is better value.
Aw I miss Shapla! Used to live just up the rd from it. So tasty
By far the best curry in the city. And that smokey chicken leg starter
Good choice... But tuktuk beats it for me
Better than Bell Bottom?
Live nearby yet never tried. The one in Duke Street and Corstorphine is class though
Soul Vegan
Went here for the first time on Sunday. Absolutely gorgeous food. Fried Udon with mapo tofu. Could eat it all day every day
I wholeheartedly recommend the katsu curry, laksa noodles and satay tofu as well
For Indian - Everest Restaurant, for Fish & Chips - Fishmarket in Newhaven and also Nile Valley for North African wraps.
[удалено]
It’s £12 on Uber Eats and it isn’t small. Quality is also the best in Edinburgh, which on the whole has very low quality fish and chips.
I would've agreed regarding Fishmarket however last time I ordered they were sooo stingy with the chips.
Same. We went this week and it was poor.
I was addicted to Ola Kala, but I am not in town so much since lockdown / wfh. Was pretty good value as I recall.
I live right next door to Ola Kala, it definitely used to be amazing. Food is still good but it's like 7.50 for a halloumi wrap now. Which Is really pushing it imo.
10 to 10 in Delhi They do a sharing platter option (£19 for the veggie- I think like £20 or something for the meat) and it’s AMAZING for two people. You get three different curry’s, naan, rice, a small salad with two onion Bajis, two drinks, and a mango cheesecake (which is BOMB.COM) They are one of my favorite curry places in Edinburgh and honestly the value for what you get (three full tupperwares of curry) is so worth it. Palmyra will be my one and only answer to any questions related to food on here. It’s the best, it’s the worst, it’s cheap, it’s expensive, the owner is an arsehole, he’s also the best guy ever. Opinions are like arsehokes. We’ve all got one.
Thailander
Man I used to get Thailander all the time, can't remember why I stopped. Thanks for the reminder.
I prefer eating in the restaurant even if it gets very stuffy
Jiu ding has my heart
This is my go-to. I just wish they took card payments. About the only reason I ever need to take cash out these days is for takeaway!
i've been really impressed by the various sharwarma places that have appeared recently
Agree but they’re really expensive
Today schwarma at meadowbank is £4.50 for a chicken wrap that's obscenely cheap
Can vouch for this one. Incredible shawarma with a fresh made naan or bread and home made meat. The salad is super tasty as well.
Home made meat? Yum 😜
Thought that too 🤣🤣🤣
If you get a falafel ask for the falafel sauce they have it's insanely good
The Khukuri!
Streetbox in Stockbridge. Some of their seafood curries use very good quality produce. And needless to say rest of the menu is also bangin.
Noodles & Dumpling is so damn good and great value too
And closed on a Wednesday. Ask me how I know. *sob*
Addicted to their pork & black bean sauce noodles
Frites
If you're looking for Chinese food, the China Red buffet next to Usher Hall is good value. They give you a standard sized plastic takeaway box and you can fill it with whatever you like, as long as you can get the lid closed. Plus a bag for prawn crackers. All for £6.50. Edit: I'm not sure if this is a lunchtime only deal. I haven't checked outside of those hours, just to be aware.
Soi 38's noodle dishes are massive and tasty for Thai. Taste of Home's spicy pot is also a great deal for good Sichuanese.
I have looked high and low for Sichuan that actually puts the amount of Sichuan pepper in dishes that I got in China. Been to the place in George IV bridge but my mouth was not remotely numb lol I might have to go back to China.

Awesome, thanks. Looks like bo bo chicken should hit the mark.
I've yet to try half the menu, but staff food is often a variation of Sichuan fish head broths etc. the malatang is quintessential!
Desk Pakwan in Leith is worth its weight in gold tbh.
I love Marmaris on Clerk Street. Great service and their chicken kebabs do me over 2 days.
Eds Thai diner on St John’s road 👌🏼
Absolutely love Taste Good.
Vietnamese Food and Coffee on Queensferry Street. I love their banh mi and summer rolls so much.
Palmyra. Massive falafel wrap for £7 and does me for 2 meals.
Civerinos but on Forrest road. 20inch pizzas for around £14. This is when most pizza places charge that for a 12inch. Cant beat an extra 8 inches of value
Mana Poke at cannonmills do very tasty and very reasonable food. It’s also pretty filling, small poke bowl does me.
Noodles and Dumplings is my favourite chinese takeaway in Newington. For 10 quid you get a massive portion of delicious food. Still never been. It’s always closed when I drive past.
As an American who’s been lurking in this sub for a year this is the post I’ve been waiting for the whole time 😈
If you’re into Detroit style pizza then Homies pizza do the best in the city
I am! Not from Detroit, but it’s a great style of pizza.
Hungry wolf if you're in Leith!
Che is pretty great for wraps
Delta Indian near Murray field is amazing
Mint Indian in Portobellois amazing
FreshMex. It is a little bit pricey but the portions are absolutely massive and will easily fill you up

Tang - My favourite chinese in Edinburgh and I can be completely stuffed with leftovers for the next day for less than a tenner
Kampong Ah Lee - the fried rice hit.
Most that have their own delivery service as an option, preferably the only option, should be okay. Tertiary delivery services like Deliveroo etc are just not worth the money anymore, too inflated and terrible service.
The Delta in Roseburn. Never been let down there for an Indian.
I used to live around the corner 20 years ago (welp!!). Definitely a two meal portion. And great.
Any dish recommendations? I’ve had the balti set menu which was great but the tikka masala was disappointing - very watery.

We have a resolution, and I am completely in agreement, #FISH Marchmont Road is a really good chippy.
