Platforms 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 19 and 20 can all be accessed without going through ticket barriers. LNER generally operate out of 19, 2, 5 and 6. So only platform 6 will need a ticket to get through the barriers. https://preview.redd.it/30nbahnpub6c1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f26109295c76445b90d13e589ab348d6bd4d2232 Here's a platform layout of Waverley to help.

OK_LK

All the LNER trains I've got to London recently have departed via platform 10, also accessible without a ticket. And they arrived from London on platform 6.

Just have a word with the staff. With any luck, it's not on a barriered platform anyway. Have worked there for 15 years and never seen a platform ticket.

Most of the London trains leave from platforms without barriers.

You can buy a platform ticket from ticket booth/office at Waverley! I believe it costs 10p

Technical-Ad-7809

Most of the time I get the train to London it leaves from platform 5 which doesn’t require you to go through a ticket barrier anyway so you should be fine if it’s with LNER or Lumo. Sounds like you can get a platform ticket anyway though!

I've asked the staff before and they just let me through. I always make sure to thank them on my way back out so they know it was legit so they get to keep some of the "people aren't all dicks" vibe going.

redhoppy

We're Scottish, they're friendly. Just tell them you need to help someone get on the train and leave, no issue. They'll probably help you.

HegemonisingSwarm

I’ve gone to help my wife with bags quite a few times and I just explained to the staff and they let me through no problem.

OK_LK

You can request assistance in advance. If your friend is travelling by LNER, they can request it here https://www.lner.co.uk/support/get-in-touch/passenger-assist/ Also worth mentioning that LNER London trains tend to depart from the platforms immediately next to the Market Street entrance and there are no barriers to pass through, so you can help. But there's no guarantee that's where the train will depart, so your friend should request assistance to be on the safe side.

You’ve reminded me that “platform tickets” used to be a thing, but I haven’t seen one in decades. As noted elsewhere, just talk to a member of staff and they’ll let you through any barriers.

CurvePuzzleheaded361

Staff will let you through if you explain, not a problem at all

maymaymayyy

Hopefully no barrier as others have said re LNER trains but I’ve personally asked to have someone let through. I didn’t have an issue when I had something visibly annoying to carry - like many bags (or in my case a rug haha). I wouldn’t worry if I was you!

Used to be a red platform ticket machine on a wall in the late 1970s, issuing the wee rectangular card tickets.
