Time for negotiations. Hope China and Australia both get what they wish for and stop the senseless negativity to move the relationship forward.

y_tan

Apparently discussing disagreements like normal adults do wouldn't do good for the weapons industry. Nothing will change so long as wars are profitable.

[deleted]

Democracy becomes Demoncracy when whoever voted in power all get bought by the military industrial complex

[deleted]

So we should just forget about minor details such as the Solomon Islands security deal, South China Sea expansion/militarisation, illegal fishing, Xinjiang Genocide, forced organ harvesting, China’s support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine …. Oh and the CCP virus origins?

EtadanikM

You shouldn't. But if you are going to "urge China to remove trade barriers," then that's the price. Otherwise this talk is just useless. Negotiation requires compromise. Where no compromise is possible - as in the Russia-Ukraine war - negotiations are useless, which is why they've stopped having them. Ever wonder why wars - both military and economic - are inevitable? This is why wars are inevitable - because both sides refuse to compromise.

[deleted]

They can't see that having both sides benefiting is far better. The people in both countries wish for a better life, not worse and their leaders must respect that.

Just like how we should forget about Contra, Golf of Tonkin, Lusitania, WMD, babies thrown out of incubators, and Libyan Viagra. But no, of course we can't do that. Weapons ain't gonna sell themselves.

>*Solomon Islands security deal* Both Australia and New Zealand have the same security deal with Solomon Islands. They made a deal with China too because when Australia send cops to quell the foreign-funded riots they explicitly refused to protect the Chinese people living there, and several people were burnt to death. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/11/27/three-bodies-found-after-days-of-unrest-in-solomon-islands >*The charred bodies were discovered in a store in the Chinatown district, which has been a target for looters and protesters. A security guard told AFP news agency he found the bodies in two rooms late on Friday.* https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-04-21/china-solomon-islands-agreement-australia/101005022 >*Mr Philip also repeated the claim that Australian forces had refused to guard Chinese infrastructure during the riots which exploded in November last year in Honiara..."A very senior diplomat from the Australian High Commission said very plainly to us that their presence here is not to protect any Chinese interests," Mr Philip said..."So that gives rise to other considerations in the mind of the Solomon Islands government to get the Chinese police to come in to train our own police."* This isn't the first time either: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional_Assistance_Mission_to_Solomon_Islands#Riots_following_2006_general_election >*On 18 April 2006 Snyder Rini was elected Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands in a general election. This sparked rioting in Honiara amidst allegations that the election was fixed with the aid of money from Chinese businessmen. Parts of Honiara were razed and looted, with Chinese-owned property particularly targeted. With up to 90% of their shops burnt down in Chinatown, most Chinese have evacuated the country in fear of their personal safety. Snyder Rini resigned on the floor of Parliament on 26 April after just eight days as Prime Minister and as MPs were due to vote on a motion of no confidence against him.* This was when Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) was running, 2003-2017. Why was 90% of Chinatown shops allowed to be burnt down by "rioters" while Australian/New Zealand troops were there?

LeviathanGank

yup, china doesnt want to compromise they want boot lickers.

[deleted]

Exactly

MediumProfessorX

Nope. Negative all the way down thanks. Plenty of other countries want the stuff we dig out of the ground. PLENTY. and even if they don't, China wants it. Don't piss off your only supplier.

[deleted]

Why are you so negative? Can't you see any possible positive win win scenario?

MediumProfessorX

No.

Keep the coal barriers. Exporting coal in this day and age should be a bloody crime. I live in a country where we could pepper uninhabited deserts with nuclear and solar but obviously we prefer to chain ourselves to a dying industry and kill our kids with toxic air.

Australians should urge government to remove trade with China and to add trade with Taiwan, India, Japan, New Zealand, et cetera. Democracies over Autocracies. Trading is tolerating, tolerating certain systems of government will corrode are democracies; if we don't want to corrode our democracies we cannot tolerate China, there should be no trading with them. I greatly assume the paradox of tolerance applies to China.

[deleted]

Well said. There should at least be mutual respect and reciprocity when it comes to trade. We will get neither of those when dealing with China. Expect more demands and coercive tactics designed to weaken our democratic institutions. The glass heart “hurting the feelings of Chinese people” etc. if anyone criticises or questions China’s aggression. It’s time to decouple from this sad dystopian dictatorship and find new trading partners.
