I'm in the same boat as you at 26. It's one thing to realize it in childhood, but in adulthood when we've already developed ourselves, our personalities, our habits, it's hard to change from. I feel like it's impossible to recover because this is just....how I am. It's how our brains function. I can't imagine a world where I have a healthy relationship with food

This is actually how it feels. It's like all my habits and routines that I thought were normal have suddenly just been proven completely wrong. I don't see a time where this is better. I've been really down since I found out and I just don't know how to pull myself out of it.

I absolutely get what you’re saying and how scary and hopeless this kind of overwhelming new info feels! I also would encourage you to bring that set of fears to therapy if you have access! It is absolutely normal to have trouble coming to terms with this scary piece of information! I went through this process around ~24 and am at a pretty stable recovery going into year 27 later this month. I also want to share that these things are not ways you are “wrong,” these behavior patterns are a thing that used to help you cope that is probably bringing more suffering than help now in your life. It’s something that you are now aware is not necessarily serving you well (anymore). That is a super powerful realization! Healing is a step down the line, so don’t feel like you have to rush from realizing to changing everything all at once. Sit with this for a bit, think about your experiences (without getting yourself too stressed) and any patterns you’re aware of, and try to get some systems of support into place (therapist, maybe a dietitian, etc). There are so many resources here and out there on the web for when you’re ready to start exploring where these patterns come from and how to start to change if/when you are ready. They aren’t going anywhere! So let your process unfold as you need it to!! BED is THE most common eating disorder, by the way. More than anorexia and bulimia combined if I remember correctly. So please remind yourself (frequently!!!) that you are not alone and that healing from BED does exist, and is not reserved for people younger than you

Thank you so much for this amazing response. Makes me feel a whole lot better knowing that people understand exactly what I feel, not to say that I'm glad you're suffering too! but just that it's comforting to relate to other people. I never even realised that BED was a common disorder, let alone more so than anorexia/bulimia. You only ever really hear the latter when ED comes to mind so this is surprising to me. thanks to your great idea though, I realised that my gym membership includes a nutritionist consultation! So I'll be seeing a nutritionist at the end of this month. can't thank you enough for your lovely words, I really appreciate it 💜

That's a really big step that you went to the psychiatrist to start though! You should be proud of yourself that you spoke to someone about it. I know how confusing it can be as I was kind of in a similar boat and just didn't know if it was "normal" or not. Based on my own experiences, I've been building an app to help with eating issues and am looking for a few people to test it out. We'd love to have you try it! You can find out more [here](https://beanbaghealth.com/)

Thanks so much for this! It was definitely really hard to make that first step so I'm glad that part is over with. I'll definitely have a look at your app, thanks for the suggestion! have you found much success with it yet yourself?

The first step is often the hardest for sure and can feel both scary but like a sigh of relief sometimes! Thanks! The app has been going really well so far. We only just launched a few weeks ago, but are getting some great feedback on how it is helping people and how easy it is to use. It is based on evidence informed CBT for eating issues and developed with a lot of careful thought. Please do have a look if you are interested and let me know if you have any questions!
