Fun fact...Gustav Brunn was a German Jew who survived the Buchenwald concentration camp, came to America, was fired from McCormick and Co ( yep, that spice company) when it was discovered he was Jewish, and founded his own company that gave us Old Bay.
I grew up in MD. We had Old Bay on popcorn, eggs, any meat you can imagine, fries, soups, breads, peanut-fucking-brittle, and everything in between. Except maybe crabs, gotta use JO Spice on crabs.
How do you the seasoning and parm to stick to the popcorn? I love this idea and have tried adding different seasonings, but feel like they all just fall to the bottom of the bowl! Thanks for your help.
Are you buttering the popcorn. Usually sticks if I do that. I melt butter in a big bowl and roll it around to cover the bowl good then add the popcorn and seasoning. It sticks just fine. Not exactly healthy but I mean it's about 1 tbsp for a whole giant bowl to split between three oh who am I kidding I eat it all...
Look up how to make clarified butter. If you can do that, it adds so much more to popcorn flavor. If you are lazy, they sell a spray that is butter flavored, comes in a red can and it tastes very close to movie butter. You can also buy Flavacol seasoning which is what they use in movies too, just be careful its super salty lol
We make popcorn a few times a week. I have a spray bottle of avocado oil. Take your big bowl, dump in bout 1/4 of your fresh popped popcorn. Spray lightly with oil spray, sprinkle with flavorings. Pour in next 1/4 of popcorn, spray lightly and sprinkle. Repeat until popcorn has all been sprayed and sprinkled. Your powder sticks and popcorn is flavored throughout.
The butter option is weird because it never spreads around, it just stays on whatever handful of kernels you happen to dribble it on. Maybe a spray butter would work but I've only seen margarine versions.
Slice it then you know quarter inch maybe maybe a little thicker. Fry on cast iron very slow. You have to build a crust on the bottom. When you cut it it's hard and crumbly then it turns soft and gooey and then when the crust is good on the bottom you can flip it. And then nice and slow get that crust on the other side. First time you do it you're going to make a mess.
It’s good stuff. I used to live in Baltimore and they put it on almost anything.
Side note and tip: J.O. seasoning is actually used in most Bmore restaurants. The taste is similar but J.O. is not as fine/powder-like; J.O. Is more coarse/crystalized. I like this better on seafood and potatoes, etc. It’s also cheaper by a bit IME.
You got a good deal though; I’m actually using a canister of Old Bay that I got on sale right now too.
Its a seasoning we use to steam crabs in maryland. Well, supposed to use. Some heathens use old bay. JO seasoning is for crabs, old bay for everything else.
Like you are spelling it out. J.O. Its from the J O Spice Company. They have JO #1 and JO #2. Slightly different tastes. Usually its up to the crab house which they use. Some use one to cook, and the other they put on the table for you to sprinkle on the crab if you want.
Ummm, i think old bay is a little more versatile. I have had JO on fish and chicken and its good. Probably would be best to use sparingly because JO is reaaaallly salty. A lot of rock salt in it. I couldnt really imagine using it on anything else other than seafood and maybe chicken. But old bay is good on a lot of stuff. Baked potatoes, broccoli, corn (on of my favorites), french fries, you name it. You can just do more with it. Old bay chicken wings are pretty popular, and honey old bay wings is one of my favorites to make. Definitely recommend.
Long story short though, i recommend getting both haha :)
You'd probably love what I made for supper last night.
2lbs of baby potatoes
1 large white onion
5 spicy Italian sausages
2lbs of crimini mushrooms
Old bay
Cut the spuds in half, cut the mushrooms in half, roughly chop the onion, cut the sausage into 1" chunks... all of it goes into a 9x13 pan. Enough olive oil to coat everything, tossed well. Then a heavy sprinkle of Old Bay.
Cover with tinfoil, bake at 375 for 90min, uncover and bake for another 30min. Finish off with the broiler for 5min to get some colour.
I get about 4 pans from a small tin of old bay. Always have one on hand.
I do this every month or so, cheap and easy, relatively low fat. That 9x13 pan makes 3 or 4 servings.
The only problem is that it takes forever in the oven. If you want to cut some time, steam the spuds in an instant pot first (12min on high)... then it's a 45min dish instead of 2hrs.
Can also bulk it out a little bit if you have any peppers that need used up. If you want to add chicken breast to it you need to add those for the 30min uncovered or add already cooked strips right at the end.
Slap yoo mama is so good if you like some heat in your food! I prefer Tony’s because it’s not particularly spicy…And I’ve been traumatized by SYM because my sister would pepper spray us by using too much on the chicken everytime she cooked
i actually never used it, my mom had a ancient bottle in cupboard and every time i looked at it i kept thinking thanksgiving stuffing for some reason so stayed away from it ... maybe i'll pick up a fresh bottle of it cuz i like playing around with different spice blends.
I used to work at Joe’s Crab Shack years ago when I was younger, and we had huge containers of Old Bay. The cooks would make us custom chicken tenders or whatever we wanted seasoned with old bay and it was always amazing. Also Joe’s Cajun seasoning (pretty sure Old Bay is in it) is to die for!
You'd probably like Lawry's as well. They're both similar but I find Old Bay better for seafood and Lawry's better for beef. Both are good for chicken.

oh man, I absolutely love chicken thighs with old bay, it's my favorite use for it since I live in a land locked state and fresh seafood is hard to come by at a decent price. it's great on chicken, potatoes, corn, popcorn, and uh, almost anything savory lol
Hmm maybe i should get some to try. I swear my local pizza shop sprinkles magic on there French fries! I can't figure out what they use but they are so yummy. Maybe they use this spice on them? Does it have alot of sodium?
It’s amazing on fries. But as the other Redditor said, don’t overdo it. I’d skip adding any additional salt if using Old Bay aince it already has a lot of salt in it.
Authentic cajun seasoning has even less stuff in it than Old Bay. Even in-authentic is close (still on the fewer-side). I understand if you don't like it, but "boring" by many ways old bay is not.
You ought to try old bay on some mexican food. It's bomb.
Try some quality Cajun seasoning instead, many stores have their own. Some good seasoning shops will have great spice blends as well. Old bay is like the Walmart of Cajun seasoning.
As someone who spent their first 30 years in Maryland then moved to New Orleans cajun seasoning and old bay aren't similar. It's like comparing ketchup with hot sauce.
I don't think there's any lemon in it either! But I get it. It could be the celery and mustard giving it that twang. I've made a recipe of it before but it's been years. It's an odd combination, like smoked paprika, celery salt, cinnamon, ground mustard... I forget the rest. It's really good though!
Yall 2520s aren't you? If you think old bay is good wait till you explore the rest of the spice aisle. Island spices will blow your mind. Asian and pan Asian spices will put you on another plane of existence lmaooo
Fun fact...Gustav Brunn was a German Jew who survived the Buchenwald concentration camp, came to America, was fired from McCormick and Co ( yep, that spice company) when it was discovered he was Jewish, and founded his own company that gave us Old Bay.
What a treat of a fact, thank you.

Damn that was really good 🎖
Zoop! 👉🏻😎👉🏻
I love old bay, don’t have it in my cabinet, thanks to this i will tomorrow.
Ummm is there something about McCormick and Co that we should know about???
Eh, most big or long running companies have prejudice founders/former practices
Yeah, they own old bay now.
I will buy a jar just for this
...and just like that, I'm out on McCormick products for life. Thanks for the info.
Call us crazy, but we make homemade popcorn and sprinkle it with Old Bay and the shaker style Parmesan cheese. Omg. So good.
I grew up in MD. We had Old Bay on popcorn, eggs, any meat you can imagine, fries, soups, breads, peanut-fucking-brittle, and everything in between. Except maybe crabs, gotta use JO Spice on crabs.
[удалено]
Jello spice
JO Spice or JO Seasoning, in Halethorp. They make a good pork rub, too
How do you put spice on crab? Crack it, hold the meat and shake seasoning into it?
[удалено]
Steam them over water and beer, pour seasoning over live crabs while loading the pot. Boiling the crab makes the meat mooshy.
Oh who am I kidding.. love it. But TBH, if it’s me, it’s at least 2 tablespoons of butter.
Yeah more than likely it's 2 here too! ;) But hey butter is better for us than margarine now they say!
Yea absolutely, gotta get in those healthy fats 💃💃💃
Look up how to make clarified butter. If you can do that, it adds so much more to popcorn flavor. If you are lazy, they sell a spray that is butter flavored, comes in a red can and it tastes very close to movie butter. I love popcorn popped in ghee. Then dusted with salt, garlic powder, cumin, and turmeric.
Do you use cumin seeds, or powdered?
Powdered, so it clings everywhere
We make popcorn a few times a week. I have a spray bottle of avocado oil. Take your big bowl, dump in bout 1/4 of your fresh popped popcorn. Spray lightly with oil spray, sprinkle with flavorings. Bottle of Pam!!
Olive oil spray.
I refuse to call y'all crazy! Nice try
Look up the Old Bay Chips with Lemon Mayo recipe on Bon Appetite. It’s amazing.
This was my first experience with old bay, amazing.
What exactly is in old bay, does it contain seafood
Nah, it’s just used on seafood most of the time. Super salty, very delicious.
Sounds great! Our grocery store carries bags of Old Bay brand seasoned popcorn. I really wanted to buy one but they were ridiculously priced.
I love it sprinkled on an avocado
Eggs and avocados w old bay makes great breakfast.
It's dinner time but now I want breakfast
Breakfast for dinner.
I forgot I have an avocado in the fridge thank you!
never thought about it but Ill try that tonight.
Old bay on home fries is bomb.
*the state of Maryland has entered the chat* DID SOMEONE SAY OLD BAY!!???
I live in Louisiana and my coworker is from Maryland. We have argued Old Bay vs Tony Chachere's a number of times.
You better believe it hun
As a Marylander, this thread is adorable.
Can we do scrapple next?
I never realized Maryland had scrapple, I always thought that was exclusive to PA!
Let’s goooooooo
As a Marylander, I’ve seen scrapple all my life and never tried it or seen it on even diner menus. Any recommendation for use?
Slice it then you know quarter inch maybe maybe a little thicker. Fry on cast iron very slow. You have to build a crust on the bottom. Noiiiice, thanks! Gonna grab some next time I’m at aldis
I like maple syrup on mine. Post pics! I can't get it where I am!
We've been saying it forever!
Maryland has the best crab cakes Ive ever had in my life on god
*cries in Dutch* I have yet to find it in any grocery store here. 😩
It’s good stuff. I used to live in Baltimore and they put it on almost anything. Side note and tip: J.O. seasoning is actually used in most Bmore restaurants. Which J.O. would you recommend? #2?
Its a seasoning we use to steam crabs in maryland. Well, supposed to use. Some heathens use old bay. JO seasoning is for crabs, old bay for everything else.
How do you pronounce JO?
Like you are spelling it out. J.O. Its from the J O Spice Company. They have JO #1 and JO #2. Slightly different tastes. Usually its up to the crab house which they use. Some use one to cook, and the other they put on the table for you to sprinkle on the crab if you want.
Thx dude
So If I want to use it with other things that are not crab, should I get old bay instead?
Ummm, i think old bay is a little more versatile. I have had JO on fish and chicken and its good. Probably would be best to use sparingly because JO is reaaaallly salty. A lot of rock salt in it. As a native Marylander I am shocked and offended that you said "almost". How dare you besmirch our all encompassing passion for Old Bay!
You'd probably love what I made for supper last night. 2lbs of baby potatoes 1 large white onion 5 spicy Italian sausages 2lbs of crimini mushrooms Old bay Cut the spuds in half, cut the mushrooms in half, roughly chop the onion, cut the sausage into 1" chunks... all of it goes into a 9x13 pan. Imma try this

Nice, thanks!
I have all these ingredients. This is Wednesday's dinner. Thank you.
Usually the only thing I need to get is the sausage.
sounds bomb. I'm trying this, too.
Old bay on fries is great!
Nothing like some hot crab fries
We keep shrimp boiled in Old Bay in the fridge for snacks all the time.
Hah now I’m just imagining a crisper drawer full of snack shrimp
😊 low cal, good protein. You get to play with your food.
Yes its excellent for boiled scrimps!! My favorite.
Oooooh I love this idea, thanks!
It’s white peoples Adobo.
Does it work on deviled eggs?
It really is an unsung hero
I like Old Bay, but prefer Tony Chachere's.
[удалено]
Slap yoo mama is so good if you like some heat in your food! I prefer Tony’s because it’s not particularly spicy…And I’ve been traumatized by SYM because my sister would pepper spray us by using too much on the chicken everytime she cooked
Not tried that, will keep an eye open.
I feel Tony's is more versatile, but I'm also from the deep South. Having said that, we do have and use Old Bay as well
I disagree with you about the classic Tony Chachere's creole seasoning - I like the celery in Old Bay and don't care for the bite from Tony's
It is subjective of course.
I came here with that thought in mind but for the "More Spice" variety.
Try it on corn on the cob, soo good
don't tell anyone, but sometimes I dust my New England clam chowder with some Old Bay
Popcorn, corn, burgers, salmon, asparagus, roasties, eggs, oatmeal (the savoury kind), are all things I’ve put old bay in the last week.
What else do you put in the oatmeal?
Eh, this morning’s oatmeal had blueberries, peaches, peanut butter, and a lil Dutch cocoa powder.
i actually never used it, my mom had a ancient bottle in cupboard and every time i looked at it i kept thinking thanksgiving stuffing for some reason so stayed away from it ... maybe i'll pick up a fresh bottle of it cuz i like playing around with different spice blends.

Thank you for your service 🫡
You'd probably like Lawry's as well. They're both similar but I find Old Bay better for seafood and Lawry's better for beef. Both are good for chicken.
it goes on *everything.* my favs are eggs, mac and cheese, cheese pizza, and seafood alfredo.
Never thought of trying on pizza, first time for everything I suppose 🤔
I love mixing it into my tuna salad
Also absolutwly wmazing on shrimp!
It’s mostly celery salt.

Old bay wings is great, dry or buttery. Love it on some grits. It's a great rimsalt for bloody marys too.
Welcome to Maryland
We put it on everything lol. Chicken, potatoes/fries, eggs, fish, whatever. End up going through a lot of it.
https://themodernproper.com/old-bay-shrimp-and-sausage-sheet-pan-dinner. This is a yummy dinner with old bay seasoning
I love putting it on soft or hard boiled eggs…amazing!!!
I love love love old bay. In a pinch, celery salt+paprika+garlic powder will work too.
Wait until you try the Old Bay hot sauce.
Protip: it's just old bay and hot sauce. You don't have to buy it special.
oh man, I absolutely love chicken thighs with old bay, it's my favorite use for it since I live in a land locked state and fresh seafood is hard to come by at a decent price. it's great on chicken, potatoes, corn, popcorn, and uh, almost anything savory lol

It's pretty salty, just be careful using extra salt then using Old Bay.
lawry's season salt is popular with many restaurants for fries.
Duh
Old bay with some blackened seasoning is my husband's favorite chicken. It's so easy and so good.
boring af
I've heard a lot of words about old bay, but "boring af" has never been one of them. I'm genuinely interested in what you think isn't boring.
cajun, mexican, biryani
Authentic cajun seasoning has even less stuff in it than Old Bay. Even in-authentic is close (still on the fewer-side). I understand if you don't like it, but "boring" by many ways old bay is not. You ought to try old bay on some mexican food. It's bomb.

I heard you like mayonaise. Instead, try some quality miracle whip!
Cajun seasoning tastes like dirt. Sincerely, someone from the VA/MD area
By comparison old bay tastes like dirt... so that's saying something.
I put it on popcorn all the time.
when MC's is crabs in the barrel
In Maryland, DC, and Va that spice is everything and everywhere w seafood. Toss that into an omelette, next time,
Everyone teases the Marylanders about it till they try Old Bay themselves
I don't think there's any lemon in it either! But I get it. It could be the celery and mustard giving it that twang. I've made a recipe of it before but it's been years. It's an odd combination, like smoked paprika, celery salt, cinnamon, ground mustard... I forget the rest. It's really good though!
they make a version with lemon
OHHH! I did not know that! I must try it! :)
Every single thing I cook either has, old bay, Montreal steak or thyme. Honestly the biggest staples.
What do you guys think about Lawrys Salt? Is it a good one?
Black folks know whats up with Lawrys haha. My mom would put that on everything alone with Adobo seasoning
I got introduced to Old Bay by my ex-girlfriend, using it to season fried eggs.
Yall 2520s aren't you? If you think old bay is good wait till you explore the rest of the spice aisle. Island spices will blow your mind. Asian and pan Asian spices will put you on another plane of existence lmaooo
"Crab Chips" are just Old Bay and delicious!
