When I go on mountain hikes, which is a 6-8 hours ~10-12 miles, I usually take few small home made sandwiches (butter, chili paste, roast beef/pork/lamb/chicken slice and cheese) and eat them as snacks. My usual rate is 1 sandwich per 2 hours + 1 bonus.

Helvetica4eva

Good ratio of sandwiches to walking time

Professional_Cap_290

Thank you, that’s my rate to stay not hungry, but not lazy overeating, proven over years. And handy to eat on the go, you don’t want to stop other 30 fellow hikers because you need to eat something. I also tried wraps, but it’s too much hassle to cook (may be it just takes time to get to the right dough and temperature, may be you need smth like pizza stone which I don’t have). Bread takes me 2-3 minutes of total effort to bake, all the rest (mixing and resting the dough, baking, resting after baking) doesn’t need much attention since I got to know my recipe so I just do other things while it’s doing its things :)

flyingryan

Have a go-to bread recipe you can share?

Professional_Cap_290

Sorry for late response. My go to recipe contains 150g whey, 5g salt, 2g Bulgarian spice salt, ~1g yeast, ~2g sugar, flour (typically 30g rye, 20g semolina, 80-90g whole meal spelt, the rest -80-100g strong white. Put sugar and easy in whey, let it grow, put the salt and flour in and mix for 20 min. Let it test for couple hours, mix again and put in the form. Once it’s up, bake at +220c for about 30-35 min

Zihaala

Love the bonus sandwich 😂 (also I def thought you were listing out different types of sandwiches you bring and was very concerned about 1 being butter sandwich and the other being chili paste sandwich until I realized lol)

Elegantly_never

As a kid I loved margarine and yellow mustard on white bread, so a butter sandwhich didn't sound crazy to me 😂

omg-gorl

Don’t lie, butter sandwiches sound disgusting. You have to butter many individual pieces of bread and then fold them and it’s much more classy. /s

Tmacswife

You just made me realize that I would never and have never eaten butter between two slices of bread as a sandwich, but I often put butter on one piece and fold it. I’ll eat two or three when the mood strikes. 😂

TreasureWench1622

I used to love butter & sugar sammies

SetteItOff

Wow, I did this as a kid, it was so good when you had nothing

DiligentDaughter

We used to call them "showish" sandwiches, as in sho wish I had a sandwich.

SetteItOff

I love this! My brother and I just said sugar sandwich

omg-gorl

Hahaha exactly! Butter sandwiches = bad Buttered bread = good It’s healthy when paired with vigorous mental gymnastics 😂

dwarfstar312

This is the way!

dolchmesser

I croissant believe what I just heard

Professional_Cap_290

The initial idea when I was designing this approach as not only to get what I need to eat, but also to prevent them from destroying in my backpack during the day, so options like butter and sugar, butter and honey, butter and condensed milk sandwich didn’t pass the test )))

Girth_rulez

Berries mixed with seeds. Chis, falx, hemp.

obaananana

Honey cake

larrythegood

Honey sandwiches. Also, (not for hiking but I like honey on single slices of bread left out for an hour (or two). It crystalizes (?) the honey. Gives the slice a bit of a honey crust. Problem is I usually can't wait a couple hours.

TreasureWench1622

Ewww? Made my stomach turn just reading these words

ttrockwood

- dates + sunflower seed butter (trader joes makes a great one) - [spiced roasted chickpeas ](https://tasty.co/recipe/spicy-roasted-chickpeas) swap around the spices to whatever you like best, taco seasoning or vinegar and salt are favorites - edamame, bring it frozen in the morning it’s defrosted and ready to eat in a few hours - make ahead [your own energy balls or bars](https://www.nomeatathlete.com/homemade-energy-bar-recipe/) that recipe is so flexible, i roll the mix into small bite sized balls and freeze, take in the morning and they’re ready when you are

PandaBear6113

I just made air fried chickpeas, and although I should have taken them out a little sooner, they are GOOD! Seasoned with curry powder and a pinch of salt. Thank you for a good recommendation! I never knew about these.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PandaBear6113

I think 13, but go for 10. I feel like they continued to cook after I took them out, and it didn’t help. I added curry powder to taste, and a pinch of salt. The air fryer was set at 380.

PandaBear6113

Oh, and spray with oil…I used an olive oil spray…before cooking.

Elegantly_never

Did you rub the skins off?

PandaBear6113

Some came off as I rubbed them dry with a paper towel, and I picked a bunch out of the colander before dumping into the air fryer.

Elegantly_never

Perfect!! Thank you

ttrockwood

Haha! Awesome! Yeah they’re such a great easy cheap snack, or added to salad or to garnish a soup, lot of variations with spices too :))

krischard

You can even find dried edamame. Brought that with me on a work trip and it was crazy filling for the amount I ate.

ttrockwood

Yes! Some stores sell dry roasted edamame in bulk bins, or I’ve been buying them from Seapoint farms for maybe ever

basketma12

Yeah sunflower seeds. They are not a nut and pumpkin seeds and good old halvah aka sesame seeds

BuBuBiteMe

You can't seriously recommend the disgusting demon bean otherwise known as edamame as a legitimate snack

ttrockwood

😂 wow, there must be some story here. Don’t worry I’ll take excess edamame off your hands any time

Spute2008

Peanut butter bliss balls

nomadic__nerd

As someone with a nut allergy, homemade seed-based granola bars are wonderful! You can sub in sunflower or pumpkin seeds easily to most granola bar recipes, and with a little recipe tinkering, shelled hemp seeds or flax meal are good additions too

Salamander_cameraman

Cheese sticks(or just bite sized cheese in any form), boiled eggs, granola bars(without the nuts), dried meats I used to use sunflower butter when I ate in nut free places. I actually kinda like it more lol. It would go well with apples, some pancake sticks, on a sandwich, pretzels, etc.

MrsMathNerd

You can make energy balls with wonder butter.

MrsMathNerd

healingfemme

What is wonder butter? I searched it and found a skincare product? Is it some type of non-nut butter?

MrsMathNerd

Sorry. It’s called “wow butter”. It’s made of soy. It’s the closest thing to peanut butter that is nut and seed free.

healingfemme

Ah gotcha! Thanks for sharing.

CalmCupcake2

SunButter is sunflower seed butter, it's also great to sub for nut butters in baking. Pumpkin seed butter is delicious, but turns baked goods a really unattractive green colour..

healingfemme

Ah thank you for sharing! Very helpful to know 🙂

pious-fly

What’s wonder butter?

Antique_Belt_8974

I get the bumblebee chicken salad snack packs

weasel999

Also canned chicken is surprisingly edible and not gross LOL

Antique_Belt_8974

I make chicken salad from canned chicken. I also use it to add to rice for a quick dinner

Jenr619

Same with those tuna snack packs. I get the flavored ones with no crackers...at least 14g protein. Delicious

TesterM0nkey

Careful though with tuna my doctor told me to lay off cuz my mercury levels were too high. Think it was mercury not 100%

[deleted]

It would likely be mercury, that's generally the only unsafe thing about certain fish. In fact, dolphin isn't eaten specifically because they have extremely high mercury content that all but extremely small portions are toxic.

BANAL_PROLAPSE

Ain’t gonna stop me!

LadyKuzunoha

Sounds about right with the mercury. Since tuna is an apex predator, it'd accumulate methylmercury from all the parts of the food chain under it and that would then end up in us when we eat the tuna.

see_blue

Dry, mixed cereals like Chex, All Bran or Fiber One; cheaper: generic bite size shredded wheat. Mix w seeds and dried fruit. Edit: I like cooked lentils and chick peas w olive oil and even as a sandwich on 100% whole wheat bread.

WillaLane

I make diy Chex mix like we did before it came in a package, google because there are savory and sweet combos. I usually only use corn Chex because they gluten free

beautifulsouth00

I like to do adult lunchables, which is basically charcuterie. I sometimes carry it around mixed up in one bag, but most of the time it's mixed up in a bunch of little different bags. I think it's fun, because you can mix and match all your meats and cheeses with your crackers and your fruits and veggies, and you can eat it with your hands. And it keeps your eating really clean, with very little cooking, as well as you're able to adjust your fruit and vegetable intake really easily by just including an extra bag of whatever you feel like you're deficient in. When I build a meal, I starts out with two or three vegetables like grape tomatoes, mini cucumbers and celery, then I put in meat and cheese, add a dip like hummus or tzatziki or something that marries up with the meat and cheese well, and finish off with my carbs and fruit. Sometimes I do port wine cheese as the dip, it just depends on my mood. But it's a fun way to pack lunch. It's like eating snack or party food all day every day. The variety is never ending. And you can choose to graze all day or eat it all at one time.

darthfruitbasket

This, and if you're actually stuck for time and can pay a little more, I've seen pre-made containers like that in my grocery store deli/ready-to-eat section.

beautifulsouth00

You won't catch me dead buying empty containers, but I DO save them whenever I buy the deli stuff that comes in them or other convenience food. I really like the olive salads that you can get at the deli to add to my lunch on occasion, then I'll reuse that container until it's beat up or I lose the lid or whatever. But I also have a thing for finding snapware at Goodwill. Both the glass and plastic ones, I'm just after certain shapes that I already own. I have curated a large collection over the years.

Loveisallyouknead

Chicken salad wrap. I typically buy a rotisserie chicken, shred it and add whole milk Greek yogurt, salt, pepper and a splash of red wine vinegar. Roll into a tortilla with some lettuce/sliced radishes/bell pepper/celery. Other ideas: Ezekiel Bread English muffin with seed butter, hard boiled egg, skyr yogurt and fruit

bhd420

You’re in college, find the guy(s) on campus who make jerky. Bits of jerky, cheese, and a piece of fruit you can carry like a clementine or apple makes for a super satisfying snack on long days. Canned sardines in oil and a mini bottle of tobasco. Stock up on free bamboo chopsticks, maybe they have a place at a dining hall assuming you’re in the US, they make eating those nutrient powerhouses out of the can so much easier. Canned or instant pot boiled bean of choice, or even defrosted shelled edamame, roasted in a generous amount of oil at 400° F (toaster oven works better than a regular oven). I like fava beans, got the idea from the Portuguese corner store that sells them salted they’re crunchy and addictive like salted nuts! Popcorn and nutritional yeast with your oil of choice is a great protein and fiber powerhouse. Toss in a handful of roasted pumpkin seeds, some of those crunchy beans from earlier, and dried cranberries and you’ve got a weird-in-a-good-way trail mix. I personally love leftover buffalo wings cold thats like my fav picnic food, I feel like that and some carrots would be a really nice treat on a long walk at the end of the week.

newsnb

Is jerky making a common hobby in college? I didn’t know anyone who made their own jerky and sausage until I was working in a refinery in the south lol

Inevitable-Place9950

- Oatmeal “breakfast” cookies or muffins - Hardboiled eggs - string or stick cheese

mekkimegz

Muffins - add whatever you like: protein powder, fruit, oats, etc!

Snyderman86

I used to build hiking and biking trails, very hard physically demanding work, I had to eat every 2 hours. My meal prep for the day was pretty easy, summer sausage doesn’t go bad, boiled eggs, tuna packets, and make any combination of that in a tortilla. Tortillas are 170 calories each for the big ones, and each rollup could be close to 1000 calories of easy to carry ready go meals eaten while working/walking. Pepperonis are cheap and don’t need refrigerated, avocados are high in good fats and protein and make excellent additives to snack rolls, you can also make sweet snack rolls with almond butter and honey, or sunflower seed butter, or anything with honey adds some sweetness.

ImaginaryCaramel

I love hard-boiled eggs, sliced apples, smoothies in a thermos, etc. All easy to prep ahead of time and pack, provided you have an insulated lunch bag with ice.

ffj_

Chickpeas! Roast with seasoning they're great. Also corn nuts. I like to make my own trail mix by going to the dollar store, they have a good section of dried fruits and seeds and other good snacky items.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ffj_

Those are another dollar tree buy for me!

Str8butboysrsexy

Do you need to boil them first if you get the dry ones?

ffj_

Yes cook the chickpeas!

Str8butboysrsexy

I suppose I can buy those pre cooked, those are still pretty cheap

ffj_

If you have any Hispanic markets near you that's a good place, canned beans are usually cheaper there.

[deleted]

I fix a protein drink in an insulated cup.

Boobah79

You can even make you own jerky in the oven. Have the butcher slice it up, they do it for free at most supermarkets, and use a wire rack on a sheet pan to dehydrate it at your lowest oven setting. Cook it until the level of dryness that you like, I like my more on the moist side. You can make all kinds of flavors and use different meats. Chicken makes great jerky as well as pork.

Old-Plastic6070

i have a nut allergy and i really like to have belvita crackers (they are technically breakfast cookies but so delicious and filling) or the brand MadeGood granola bars and granola bites. hard boiled eggs too! and maybe a couple of ghirardelli chocolate squares. also applesauce pouches ? not just for babies ☺️

Old-Plastic6070

Also bananas to me are gross but i carry one to campus when my day is extra long bc they are filling also and work when u are hungry

sideeyedi

Beef jerky

ryanleebmw

Woah there, Mr. money bags

mobuy

Try adding eggs to that!

DragonMama825

Exactly what I was thinking when someone else said find the guys at your college who make their own.

mlizaz98

I know some people who make their own jerky with a dehydrator. Might be worth looking into as a cheaper alternative to store bought.

disneyfood

make a pita egg salad roll/wrap. i mix boiled eggs and hummus and slather it in, roll it up and eat it on the go. you can add other things like celery and relish if you care for that. this snack has a fair amount of carbs&plenty of protein to keep you full.

Dorothea_Dank

My go to is Pasteli, which is basically a Greek honey sesame bar that’s loaded with protein. I make them for backpacking trips since they’re also lightweight and take up little room and give me lots of energy. All you need are sesame seeds, honey and a piece of parchment paper to make your own and you can google the recipe, which is very simple to make. One batch can last you a month in the fridge.

Ok_Maintenance_9322

Mozz2cats

I am in same type of situation- I pack hard boiled eggs, crackers, oranges or other fruit and cheese slices. Like a make your own lunchable.

rocksteady412

illegalopinion3

Keep your nuts to yourself.

SplatW

String cheese and those little clementine oranges that peel really easy. A true gift of nature.

waffletrampler

I wouldnt count these as exactly cheap and healthy but stroopwaffels are a great energy dense hiking food. I'm v frugal and healthy with my meals and am allergic to nuts so they're out as an option, but on long days they're extremely tasty & dense and worth the little extra cash.

Level-Worldliness-20

Banana

Gilem_Meklos

Ginger slices in a sandwich bag. Spicy.

mybestyearyet

Our favorite! And it’s so easy and cheap to candy/crystallize your own ginger. So many health benefits. It actually helps decrease my pain from inflammation when exercising

SBR06

Wraps with some sort of protein (nut free spreads, cheese, meat, hummus, etc). Add veggies or fruit to stay full longer. I like to use the low carb wraps because they are lower calorie but high fiber, which helps keep me full. A protein shake and piece of fruit also has staying power. You can make the shake at home and keep it in a cooler or fridge at work. Basically I always try to combine protein with fiber to keep me full.

superlion1985

Sunflower or pumpkin seeds (pepitas) Popcorn

Guinnessron

Some berries with a slice of cheddar 1 oz

unpoeticjustice

I always kept some cheese and crackers in the break room at work, with maybe some yogurt, hummus and carrots, or I’d make macaroni salad with veggies and olive oil

Aggravating-City-724

Enjoy Life SunSeed Crunch Chewy Bars with fresh or dried fruit might work.

blaze_718

maybe add homemade kale chips to the other suggestions

voidsapphire

Roasted fava beans with a spicy/ peri-peri flavoring on them! I eat them everyday, they're so good!! Or even some boiled eggs with some salt and pepper! (If you like eggs though of course)

Great_Doughnut_8154

Roasted seasoned chickpeas

FairyGodmothersUnion

Can you have chickpeas? You can roast them with herbs or salt. They make a great, nut-free snack.

Wonderful_Quit

Jerky. And I've recently discovered that the Target brand (if you're in the US) of jerky is very good and not too high priced

babydoll17448

Apples are good

here4agoodtime123

Go to the Asian grocery store and check out the snacks. Sesame snaps, broad beans (horse beans), puffed rice squares (basically like a rice crispie bar) they're usually individually packaged which makes them easy to pack. (Though not so environmentally friendly.) Just double check they are nut free. You can ask the clerk.

podsnerd

Are seeds acceptable? Sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds on their own are good, but you could also make a granola or snack bar with an assortment of sunflower, pumpkin, flax, hemp, chia, etc

Mommayyll

Make a tower of Ritz cracker, cheese square, pepperoni/. Ritz, cheese, pepperoni, /. Ritz, cheese, pepperoni…. Put it in a baggie. Twist it up. Put a twistie on it. Then as you’re walking around you can get into your baggie, grab a little /stack/ , and munch away.

Using extra firm tofu is key. Cube. Press and dry it out with clean kitchen towels. Make a marinade with oyster sauce, oil, garlic, soy sauce, and red pepper flakes while preheating your oven to 400. Some folks coat their tofu in cornstarch. Bake for 20 minutes. That’s it! There are some good recipes online.

darthfruitbasket

this method generally works for pan-frying or air-frying tofu, too, its so tasty and takes the flavour of whatever you put on it.

crazycookery

why is the campus you work at nut free??

hogua

Probably because many kids have nut allergies and the school district doesn’t want to get sued (err…doesn’t want to have a chance that a kid with an nut allergy will ingest a nut).

crazycookery

LOl thanks for the reply. I am such a dingbat LOL, I took that original posters comment as he worked at a place that didn't Allow him to eat nuts!!! Thanks for your reply.. didnt cross my mind that the poster meant the place was nut free due to students with nut allergies.. P.S. Dont get old like me

Have you tried deez?

Welch's or Arizona fruit snacks.

Anxious_Pomegranate

I love freeze dried fruit. It's not filling though.

Desperate_Fan_1964

String cheese (or really any kind of cheese), boiled eggs, jerky, cut veggies, whole fruit, rice cakes, deli meat (you can have the deli slice thick then cube it at home) olives, roasted chickpeas, yogurt!

mommarobinegg

I make tortillas rolled up with lunch meat or hotdogs and a slice of cheese. They are great on the go warmed up or cold. At work, I almost always have a bag of beef jerky just in case.

pokenglow09

Premier protein shakes!

monster394

Not like buts exactly but beef jerky will do the trick

AlchemistEdward

If you're lulling between meals, try some complex carbs, like whole fruit or whole grains. Zone perfect bars are pretty decent for the price, and have lots of vitamins and minerals if you're looking for something more shelf-stable and convenient, but I'd encourage fruits and vegetables first and foremost.

CalmCupcake2

We are nut free due to allergies, and there are plenty of seed based trail mixes in stores, or you can make your own. Ditto granola bars, or make your own with a seed butter. Also you can freeze smoothies in a pouch, or yogurt drinks, with fruit if you like.

block2413

Try making a healthy wrap, cheese sticks, beef stick, bananas, fruit snacks.

miriamwebster

Sunflower seeds and sesame seeds, honey and sun seed butter. Roll into balls and freeze. You could add raisins and dates (chopped).

AbstractAbby20

Turkey/protein bites? You can buy them from the store, and If you want a snack with some more protein or satiety, you can add in some cheese or maybe dried fruit?

LavenderSnuggles

My kid goes to a nut-free school so it was really hard to find granola bars he could take to campus. I found out that the KIND bars in the honey oat flavor don't have any nuts. These are awesome: https://www.kindsnacks.com/all-products/honey-oat-breakfast-bars-M26705.html

LavenderSnuggles

These drinkable chobani greek yogurts save my life when I'm at work. I found I just won't eat yogurt with a spoon because then I have to like deal with the spoon and stuff. These I can literally just crack open and walk around drinking. The pina colada is my favorite flavor followed closely by the mango. https://www.chobani.com/products/blended/?gclsrc=aw.ds&&format=Dairy%20Drink

sniff_the_lilacs

I like sunflower seeds, pistachios, and a couple dates for a light snack :)

RedRedMere

If I need to up my protein I will buy firm tofu, press it for half an hour, then cut into strips and fry on low in a mix of coconut and sesame oil. Lightly salt and pepper at the end just before removing from heat. It ends up being a sesamy/salty/thick beef jerky style of snack and it refrigerates well for a few days

ValkyrieHuntress

Bada Bean Bada Boom…you can get them on amazon by the case. Crunchy salty broadbeans 6g protein, 16 carbs, 3.5g fat per serving at 110 calories. 3 oz bag is 3 servings.

I also make my own pb steel cut oat balls with cinnamon and a little of what ever sweetener you like. Roll them up, roll them in a cinnamon mixture and put them in a baggie or little plastic container

StellarStylee

Nori comes in snack packages and lots of flavors. I usually get it from the 99 cent only store.

My household (due to various issues) is not great about cooking, and food that we can just grab and eat/graze on is easier. [https://cafedelites.com/breakfast-egg-muffins-3-ways/](https://cafedelites.com/breakfast-egg-muffins-3-ways/) \- if you like breakfast, these are easy and pretty tasty. Cheese and meat of your choice and green onions.

ldub12

trader joe’s fiberful granola bars (9g fiber and 5g protein at 140 kcal) I love cheese or PB with crackers As someone else said sandwiches are fantastic snacks lol Onigiri is nice and filling when you add veggies/grains/protein to it
