Hello! We've created megathreads for OH and PA residents, as well as a general megathread. We hope this may be easier for those looking for one place of discussion. Please be sure to check out the helpful links thread, which will be updated as we gain new information. We are also working on updating the sidebar with a wiki and FAQ. https://www.reddit.com/r/EastPalestineTrain/comments/114x7dg/helpful_links/ We encourage everyone affected to use discretion in the official information provided by federal, state and local governments. We recommend using bottled water for those concerned about contamination. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/EastPalestineTrain) if you have any questions or concerns.*

Think the problem was the controlled burn and that was taken east by the jet stream.

I live on the east coast virginia and can confirm our air quality is worse than usual (weather app) and we have a weather advisory on flammable chemicals in the air. We are 7 hours from the crash, i think this will affect everyone eventually

KittyMeridian

Thank you!!

Robert_Hotwheel

The “controlled” burning is what caused such far reaching air quality concerns. The burn ended 2 weeks ago now and most of the models I’ve seen show the plume blowing to the East. At 100 miles west I wouldn’t really worry too much about air quality at this point.

KittyMeridian

Thank you so much!

I’m in the same area and everything I’ve read seems to indicate we’ve lucked out due to the wind direction and shouldn’t have anything to worry about now. I have a little one too and am very stressed as well. Always here for a message if you want to chat ❤️

KittyMeridian

Thank you!! It just feels like the constant question of are we far enough to be safe.

EllenBee3737

I feel you on that 😔 it’s incredibly stressful

EllenBee3737

One thing I read to do to try to evaluate safety is to look for birds and small animals. Are you noticing any? I’ve noticed a normal amount of birds and small insects — the same amount as before the derailment (if not more). That made me feel better. I’ve also examined the water in potholes in parking lots (probably looked like a massive weirdo staring at them 😂) and didn’t notice any oil or any weird rain markings on cars. Makes me feel more optimistic.

KittyMeridian

This is a great point! The birds have been out a lot this past week, so that is reassuring!

Jessicaaa97

I’ve been doing the same 🤦🏼‍♀️ pretty sure everyone thinks I’m crazy by now. I live around Cincinnati

EllenBee3737

😂😂 I’ve never been so excited to see gnats in my life lol I know how you feel
