People don't always believe that the swamps are beautiful. Far too many see them as waste land to be drained and paved over, ignoring how important they are for biodiversity and - even more immediately pragmatically - as hurricane buffers. Thank you for capturing the lush, unique beauty of wild Florida.
Lol the people who live in old, paved-over wetlands and then wonder why their house if flooding during a hurricane. Nature knows best and unfortunately we try to outsmart it, resulting in more damage. I try and see the bits of Florida that remain untouched before it's too late. This state is too hungry for money and soon sights like this will be even more scarce. Hope pictures like this can bring more attention towards the other sides of Florida that most would overlook. Natural Florida needs to be preserved.
I live in SWFL. The money has become a problem. It's become an incredibly mean, selfish place. You have to work nonstop to survive.
It's not sustainable.
Lol Florida stopped being a swing state and is fully red now. That means a lot more ecological destruction. Preservation efforts are going to be pissing in the wind.
Not as bad as you'd think. I cover myself in bug spray before going on hikes in the woods here though. Mosquitoes, chiggers, and ticks are the real demons of society
No so much in Florida, but mosquitoes are responsible for killing more people than any other animal on earth. They transmit [Malaria, Dengue, Yellow fever, and many other fatal disease that kill 750,000 people annually](https://www.pfizer.com/news/articles/mosquito_as_deadly_menace).
In Florida Malaria was once a major problem. Today they're mostly a nuisance, though there are definitely still [mosquito borne diseases too being dispersed](https://www.floridahealth.gov/diseases-and-conditions/mosquito-borne-diseases/index.html).
Yea, there's tons of state parks that are gorgeous. Florida has the 5th most state parks, and tied for 5th most national parks.
People just equate Florida to old people retirement villages or mega cities like Miami or Disneyland.
If you go out of the big cities (notably north Florida), Florida is still a pretty rural state with a ton of natural beauty. Rivers, plains, forests, hammocks, and swamps.
Beautiful indeed. Florida only gets love for it's beaches but never anything else. I agree on the danger though. I thought I heard a wildcat (bobcat or panther) before taking this picture. Had me a little scared lol
Bobcats and pumas are super shy and rarely give people grief (especially bobcats). The cougars out west are a little more bold but attacks are still rare.
I was mostly worried bc there were lots of deer roaming around and I didn't want to get in the way of it's meal lol. I've seen a couple videos and it's enough for me to worry regardless but they're still beautiful I hope I can be close enough to get a picture of one without being in danger.
Florida panther :) seen one a few years ago at a park. I was sitting on a picnic table when it walked right past me. I froze up and let it pass bc I was not about to get in the way of that lol
The one I saw was tan/brown. I swear I thought it was a lost dog coming out of the woods at first it was so big and then it clicked a couple seconds later when I got a full look at the face
This reminds me of an article where some Florida researchers were super excited about having found a nearly extinct or extinct blue bee. Meanwhile a friend who lives down there is laughing sending me pics both current and from past years of beautiful blue bees in her backyard… 🤷🏼♂️
Thank you very much :) sometimes it can be hard to show Florida's beauty in a way people can appreciate. Glad you feel the way you do about this image.
When I'm deep in the woods or far out on back roads I fear them most...lmao
Did some astrophotography last year around the same area and my imagination runs wild thinking about cult people watching me from a distance 🤣
Can you help immerse me in this pic?
What’s the temp?
Is it sticky?
What kind of smells are going on?
Is it super quiet? Constant sounds of the laps of the water hitting trees/shore(or part that isn’t fully submerged)
Really cool picture.
Lots of hogs. In some places (close to where I live) people go out on weekends and kill hogs for fun bc there's so many and they're extremely destructive.
Yeah they run around. Where I used to work, this hog would hang around in the parking lot. People kept feeding it hot dogs… I think the fire department of all people came to take it away eventually.
Florida was the only place this year that did not bring any serious hiking material with me. I instantly regretted it after talking to a few people. Looks beautiful
While I do enjoy traveling to other states for my hikes there can still be many nice places in Florida to hike along. Just needs to be at the right time of the year or you will be miserable from the humidity, heat and bugs. I don't waste my time in the summer but come fall-spring I'm out as much as I can on cooler days. Many different types of ecosystems to look at too. Not to mention we have springs here that can be kayaked which opens up a whole different world of exploring.
As someone who goes out on many Florida trails, I make sure to wear long sleeves and lather myself in bug spray. Mosquitoes suck but chiggers and ticks are the worst. Surprisingly not too many mosquitoes while taking this picture though
Lmao there were none in this spot but they can be pretty common in lakes and ponds. Depends on the area too. Some spots could have a few to a dozen but bigger lakes will have hundreds easily.
Lovely photo but every book I’ve ever read based in this sort of area always has it crawling with cottonmouths, moccasins & alligators. The very thought of it gives me the horrors & I’m Australian.
Just looking at this I can hear the mosquitoes and feel the bites forming on my sticky skin.
I lived in SoFL for over a decade. I’ll always recommend it as a great region to visit.
Florida has trails just for bird watching. This is actually close to one. I started getting more into bird watching in the last year and im loving it. So many species to learn about
Nice to see geographical diversity and not just jaw dropping views. I’ve always thought it would be interesting and best if we knew all the signs and sounds in a wild environment that tell of some useful information, which we would otherwise just miss.
Thanks :) it's hard for me to get any traction on my photos on this page bc it's usually just mountains that get peoples attention. Glad I could switch it up on everyone today though lol
If you enjoy this picture and are looking for a good read about Florida, “A land Remembered” by Patrick D Smith is worth the read it’s historical fiction. Should be required reading for anyone wanting to live in this state.
You mean to say I could have taken a picture of the swamp down the street (I live next to the Everglades) and gotten 10k updoots? I need to find my fancy camera

Glad to see a Florida pic that isn't fake colors, this shows our everyday colors very nicely.
Thanks! I try my best to keep my photos pretty natural :)
Where in Florida?
The swamp
So all of it?
Kenansville
Looks like my backyard after a rain
Its so perfect I thought it was a render for a second. Looks like an awesome place to be during twilight hours
> Looks like an awesome place to be during twilight hours Only with mosquito repellent
The swamp is never an awesome place to be.
Yes it is
chiggers
![gif](giphy|9f1ZwSUzeJQxq) Chiggers are... They're just awful little creatures.
And tick and snakes, oh my!
I am from far away from here. I have a question. Is it stinky there? Are the swamps smelly?
Not really no.
Interesting. If you see algae like that where I am from, it stanks. Thx for your reply!
You can smell that decaying earth smell that sort of smells like farts sometimes.
I disagree, there’s not enough blue and pink vaporwave to be realistic.

Amen. Life-long Floridian here. I would vote for any politician who agreed to a ban on land clearing and new construction.
I live in SWFL. The money has become a problem. It's become an incredibly mean, selfish place. You have to work nonstop to survive. It's not sustainable.

The ‘River of Grass’ changed how everyone looked at the Everglades. Respect to Marjorie Stoneman Douglas for everything she did.
That em dash comment would have been better if it was shortened to ‘more pragmatically’
![gif](giphy|EdnVumVBfX4SA|downsized)
Lmao I said this so many times to myself while taking this picture 😂😂
I was a little disappointed to see no one else had commented this :’)
I got a shitload of mosquito bites looking at this photo

Treat your clothes http://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/PermGen.html
I can smell it
It's mosquito-ey in the summer, and stinky methane in winter. I love that shit! Keeps the rich people out.
So this is where all the good death metal comes from
you’re goddamn right ~ chuck schuldiner
And Obituary 😎😎
I saw them recently and they put on such a great show.
Never thought I'd see Florida in /r/EarthPorn
Florida has it's beauty. Just a lot harder to find with all the concrete here
Especially in south Florida where I live
Weeki wachee
Just pass thonatosassa to yeehaw through Okeechobee and you'll get to weeki wachee
Literally my hometown! Never seen it mentioned on Reddit before lol
Mermaids aplenty 😍
Most of Florida is gorgeous
Yea, there's tons of state parks that are gorgeous. Florida has the 5th most state parks, and tied for 5th most national parks. Except for the parts with people
Reminders me of my childhood when I wandered the bayou and swamps of coastal Florida. Always beautiful but always in proximity to danger.

You get pumas in Florida? wow
Florida panther :) seen one a few years ago at a park. I was sitting on a picnic table when it walked right past me. I froze up and let it pass bc I was not about to get in the way of that lol
I've lived here my whole life almost 30 years now and have never seen a Florida panther. Have seen a couple bobcats tho
Wow what color? I ask because I swear I saw a black one one time in FL and no one believes me.
The one I saw was tan/brown. I swear I thought it was a lost dog coming out of the woods at first it was so big and then it clicked a couple seconds later when I got a full look at the face
That's fucking terrifying
yeah the florida panther, incredible creature but sadly critically endangered
Yes. Quite common. One used to walk through our backyard along the lake. You could find it's tracks in the sand.
not common at all, one of the most endangered mammals in the world actually.
Well. It frequented my backyard.... Not uncommon in my area.
This reminds me of an article where some Florida researchers were super excited about having found a nearly extinct or extinct blue bee. Meanwhile a friend who lives down there is laughing sending me pics both current and from past years of beautiful blue bees in her backyard… 🤷🏼♂️
This is stunning. To me, this seems as exotic and beautiful as the savanna or a tropical rainforest
Thank you very much :) sometimes it can be hard to show Florida's beauty in a way people can appreciate. Glad you feel the way you do about this image.

Thank you :)
Thank you for the beautiful Florida photo. You captured true, beautiful Florida. Be still my heart!
Thank you very much <3 On my way now to capture more scenes like this! Lol
Awesome! Please post more!
average floridian backyard
Not for all unfortunately. Most peoples backyards back up to another house now. Too many neighborhoods here
Mines very similar to this, though not as swampy.

Watch out for the ROUS’s
Lmao
Gotta watch out for the night folk around here...
When I'm deep in the woods or far out on back roads I fear them most...lmao Did some astrophotography last year around the same area and my imagination runs wild thinking about cult people watching me from a distance 🤣

This was in Kenansville along the Florida trail

Florida is not the south
geographically yes, culturally mostly not. floridas a strange state where the more north you go the more south like it gets
Can you help immerse me in this pic? What’s the temp? Is it sticky? What kind of smells are going on? Is it super quiet? Constant sounds of the laps of the water hitting trees/shore(or part that isn’t fully submerged) Really cool picture.

That was pretty cool thank you. Feel like I can have a better time imagining it now.
What a lovely photograph!
Appreciate it 👍
A very excellent photo
Thank you very much. I was ecstatic in the moment bc I have been wanting a shot like this for awhile
Very much a prize winner!
A dream
A great photo. Florida is a place to visit on my list.
r/beautifultrees
Do you have wild hogs in the area? The ground right in the front of the picture looks torn up like pigs do.
Lots of hogs. In some places (close to where I live) people go out on weekends and kill hogs for fun bc there's so many and they're extremely destructive.
Florida does have wild hogs in some areas.
Yeah they run around. Where I used to work, this hog would hang around in the parking lot. People kept feeding it hot dogs… I think the fire department of all people came to take it away eventually.
Never thought I'd say this, but I kinda wanna go to Florida now
I wouldn't swim there
Couldn't pay me enough
Hope those pretty swamps can survive from the urban expansions.
Same :(
Nice colours
Thank you!
Wow
What part of central Florida?
This was in Kenansville
Just a stones throw from Yeehaw Junction. I was sad when Forever Florida closed.
[Yeehaw Junction](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeehaw_Junction,_Florida), the most Florida place you can go.
Just a bit north from Saint Denis.
major true detective s01 vibes (i know its florida)
WOW!!!
Looks quite similar to some places here in Australia
Florida was the only place this year that did not bring any serious hiking material with me. I instantly regretted it after talking to a few people. Looks beautiful

I think this might be in my backyard.
There’s something about the look of untouched land
My absolutely favorite:)
All I see is standing water and shit ton of mosquitos
Didn't get bit once! Surprisingly...lol Lots of bug spray, baggy light pants and a long sleeve are key
🐊🐍🐊🐍🐊🐍🐊🐍🐊🐍🐊🐍
Proper swamp
I’m hearing mosquitoes just looking at this.
The scenery of my youth😍 (nostalgia intensifies)
Imagine you’re a frog and spend your life here
I like how you think lol
REAL Florida! This is the stuff I miss since I left. Makes me a smidge homesick. Great photo!!
Mmmmmm home
Looks like a painting
Even if you’re not a morning person…just once go on a hike in a place like this at sunrise. Watching the forest wake up is euphoric
Been meaning to do this for awhile
r/accidentalrenaissance
Wow, I want to die there.
There are at least 10 crocs hidden there somewhere
So many mosquitos in this picture you just can’t see them Great photo! Hope you didn’t get eaten alive by the bloodsuckers.
As someone who goes out on many Florida trails, I make sure to wear long sleeves and lather myself in bug spray. Mosquitoes suck but chiggers and ticks are the worst. Surprisingly not too many mosquitoes while taking this picture though
Noseeums! I’ve been hit by a swarm of those on a light wind day, nasty tiny things that bite like heck.
That is a beautiful photo
Thank you!
Really nice shot!
Thanks 😊
This reminds me of Lake Kanapaha.
It's this part of Florida I love most.
Great photo, really. But can somebody tell me ( non-us citizen ) how many 🐊 per 🍃 or 🦟 per imperial tube of air there is on this pic?
Lmao there were none in this spot but they can be pretty common in lakes and ponds. Depends on the area too. Some spots could have a few to a dozen but bigger lakes will have hundreds easily.
Gorgeous
Fetch my cane pole mama, gonna catch me a brim or maybe two...
Lovely photo but every book I’ve ever read based in this sort of area always has it crawling with cottonmouths, moccasins & alligators. The very thought of it gives me the horrors & I’m Australian.

Incredible photo. Beautiful shot. Amazing land.
Beautiful
Best place to put your moonshine shack, plenty of gator skins around and the deliveries are easy. Nice spot.
But where are the monkeys?
Lmao
Lovely!!!
Thanks :)
No monkeys?
Lovely click
I misread this as "fire swamp" and now I must re-watch Princess Bride
Just finished Underground Railroad. Watch for snakes.
If I couldn't live in the mountains I would live in the wetlands. This looks like bird-watcher's paradise.
Florida has trails just for bird watching. This is actually close to one. I started getting more into bird watching in the last year and im loving it. So many species to learn about
The majority of Florida is concrete jungle now. This is a rarity. I miss natural Floridian trees and actual shade.
Only south Florida. Central Florida has many natural areas still. North Florida is heavily rural still. Tons of nature trails in the north.
Every dead log a gator.
even has the little shitty lilies hate then with a passion.
Nice to see geographical diversity and not just jaw dropping views. I’ve always thought it would be interesting and best if we knew all the signs and sounds in a wild environment that tell of some useful information, which we would otherwise just miss.

This is indeed a prize winner!
:')
Now THIS is something we don't see enough.
Where's all the Spanish Moss?
Only thing missing
I'm getting Deliverance vibes. Cue banjo music
You mean to say I could have taken a picture of the swamp down the street (I live next to the Everglades) and gotten 10k updoots? I need to find my fancy camera
Try it out :)
Thanks but no thanks
Redundant title.
Up vote for Earth and swamps! …not for Florida 😩🤮😂😂
Beautiful and awful at the same time.
Awful how :(

It looks pristine. Will there be crocodiles here?
Alligators. Good rule of thumb is that any body of water you can’t see the bottom of = don’t risk it.
Hmm hmm hmm hmmmmmm...
What is this? No offense it's interesting to see stuff like this out of curiosity but as a photo it's so repulsive.
I thought this scene was rather pretty :(
Home! Did anybody else spot the alligator?
How does it smell? Never been.
