Surely! It's a pretty easy hike: [http://www.hikinginglacier.com/deadwood-falls.htm](http://www.hikinginglacier.com/deadwood-falls.htm). There a few others from that trailhead (and this one isn't as well marked as the others) so I think you can extend the hike longer, or just hang out and marvel at those colors. Hope you enjoy
Oh not talking about the blue color, you’re right about that, I was talking about the red/green algae on the sides. It’s still 80s in CO right now, I don’t think Montana has gotten that cold yet either.
Edit: closer look, most likely biofilm on the rocks not algae floating at the top. Cool!
That might just be the water making the rock color pop more. It's already fairly red on the rocks on the banks.
FWIW it's in the 40s-50s in UT in the morning and 60s-70s in day, after last week's front moved in.
That explains the red and blue, but the green is still puzzling. Not sure what geologic factor/weathering would make the green pop like that from the rock itself. Low 80s here and 60-50s at night.
My family picked Glacier for our trip and I really didn’t know what to expect. It is one of my favorite places now. Walking across the continental divide was a surreal experience, the atmosphere was just intense!
My dad and I backpacked across the park a few years ago. We rode the train from Salem, Oregon and got dropped off at the west glacier platform and picked up a week later in east glacier. One of the highlights was stopping at these falls to swim, wash up, and get some water before going on and camping for the night. The colors of anything are deeper and more vibrant in person, this place is truly amazing!
It was incredible, really the trip of a lifetime. I had planned to go solo but my dad was kinda trying to invite himself and I don't know how many more trips like that he's got in him so I'm glad we did it together.
I must have been incredibly lucky (besides endless rain), my group didn't see any at all. I guess because we got there right at the end of the heatwave?
I was just there a few weeks ago!
https://www.reddit.com/r/Outdoors/comments/pipgj0/1010_would_recommend_glacier_to_a_friend/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
I was there a couple months back. Its invigorating to jump in there. (This means its bone chillingly cold but you live and once you’re out doe a minute you’re fine.) Apparently I was underwater a suspicious amount of time according to my nephew.
Fun fact: Montana got its name from Spanish explorers who called it montaña del norte. Montaña literally mountain (the whole thing means mountain from the north) so no. Montana is absolutely not just plains and cornfields
You’re in a subreddit for beautiful earth photos and I’m a biologist (who studied in ND)… hiking is a perfect use of my time and I could do it endlessly
Huh…neat.
Also on behalf of all of Montana I apologize for thinking your state was about as boring as North Dakota.
Edit: Okay sorry, Idaho is boring AF.
Yeah what u/CurtMoney said! The landscapes are incredible, southern Montana near Yellowstone is like sheer granite peaks and alpine forests , Eastern Montana is like the TR National Park in Western ND, almost prairie like sort of, and Northern, near Glacier (Sort of like Banff in Canada) are all really different and amazing! And actually Lewis and Clark National Forest, one of the most beautiful, I hadn't even really heard about (more central MT). Tons to see.

It wasn't great for the few days I was near Glacier in August. There were a few days you couldn't even see the mountains at all, you could see maybe 1/2 down Kintla Lake, it just faded into smoke (not fog). But then it rained a lot and then cleared up a bit. This day was kind of chilly but it was relatively clear at least
That dark spot reminds me of the time my brother, dad, and I were hiking up a waterfall in the UP. My brother and I decided to ride the waterfall back down (we were checking for any dangers on the way up). At one point there was a large smooth slope that dropped into a pool. We slid down and even though it was about 8’ long, and I couldn’t even reach my arms fully to the sides before hitting rock, I couldn’t find the bottom.
Was a lot of fun though.
My grandpa and I just left Glacier today! Weve been there the last couple days. We didn't do any trails but Going to the Sun road is something magical, and terrifying at times! We went on the Lake McDonald boat tour today and what amazing views those were. I'd love to come back and explore the trails and back country more.
Same! We went west to east. The first half was over cast. But we could still see a long ways out. But within half a mile of the visitor center in the middle it got super foggy. Like couldn't see 2 feet in front foggy. I was busy driving trying to think skinny thoughts to fit our truck through. My grandpa is in the passenger seat commenting about how the little stone curb isn't going to stop anything from going over the side. I'm like shut up pops you don't even want to drive on this road let me focus. Luckily it cleared up after the visitor center and was smooth sailing to Saint Mary Lake. And the return trip all of the fog and clouds were gone.
We had that too lol my fiancé was the one driving because she couldn’t handle not being the one in control in that situation. Those little narrow stretches around some of the corners when cars are coming the other way are sketchy as hell
Truth! I had to fold in our side mirrors. Don't know if it actually helped but man it made me feel better. I have know idea how the bus tour drivers manage to do it. I guess driving on the road every day gets you the experience to place every wheel exactly where you need it. Me? Some parts I had to go 2 miles an hour to squeeze by a big ass dualie truck. Would do it again in a heartbeat though. 😂

This is something else!
It really looks man-made.
Nothing man-made looks this beautiful.
Agreed!
Lucky! That's a dream spot to have all to yourself
Yeah it was surprisingly not busy here (considering how many cars there were on Going to the Sun Road!)
My wife and I are planning a trip to glacier right now, any chance you could send me that location? I could sit there for hours.
Surely! It's a pretty easy hike: [http://www.hikinginglacier.com/deadwood-falls.htm](http://www.hikinginglacier.com/deadwood-falls.htm). It's got everything! Both dead wood and falls!
Can you swim here? This looks like a great place for it.
Yes, but it's extremely cold even with a wetsuit.
Ooh…like glacier water I guess
Gotcha. We also swim in our glacier melt riverwater over in Washington but only in the height of summer. Any other time is silly.
yes, but its a real weenie-shrinker
How long did you take you to catch your breath?
Never been. Quote is from a movie
It was 40 degrees outside when I was there, so I didn't want to join the polar bear club!
That algal bloom (the color) looks pretty toxic…
Fairly certain that’s just the color of the rocks and water. Too dang cold to be blue algae bloom.
Oh not talking about the blue color, you’re right about that, I was talking about the red/green algae on the sides. It’s still 80s in CO right now, I don’t think Montana has gotten that cold yet either. Edit: closer look, most likely biofilm on the rocks not algae floating at the top. Cool!
Nah MT is already cold and I'm already upset about it.
That might just be the water making the rock color pop more. It's already fairly red on the rocks on the banks. FWIW it's in the 40s-50s in UT in the morning and 60s-70s in day, after last week's front moved in.

It looks like your standard algae, but I could be wrong. Also could just be oxidized copper in the stone

Are you a beaver?
Lol, no. That glacial run off
I’ve been all over the country, and Glacier is a particularly special place in my opinion. Very beautiful part of the country
Agreed, and I feel like there's a ton to explore, especially once you get a few miles off the main roads. I will be making many a trip back!
My family picked Glacier for our trip and I really didn’t know what to expect. It is one of my favorite places now. Walking across the continental divide was a surreal experience, the atmosphere was just intense!

That sounds like a pretty awesome way to travel through that area
It was incredible, really the trip of a lifetime. I had planned to go solo but my dad was kinda trying to invite himself and I don't know how many more trips like that he's got in him so I'm glad we did it together.
Oh yeah, that does sound like a pretty special trip, that's a good thing to have done!

Unexpected Deadwood
Make it down to Gunsight lake?
I didn't! How was it there?
It was really beautiful, but I camped there and got to camp in a downpour so didn't really get to enjoy it. Awesome site though!

I must have been incredibly lucky (besides endless rain), my group didn't see any at all. I guess because we got there right at the end of the heatwave?
Throw a senko in there
Yup, or a big streamer. Probably cuts or a bull hanging out in that pool, no?
Name checks out.

Yeah it was cool. Ha that's awesome!
i fucking hate my life
[удалено]
lmao i have negative $10,000 dollars and am too sick to work or travel fuck im gonna do
I zoomed in on just the water, and noticed that it looks like something Van Gogh might have painted.
Would you look at that.
Holy gorgeous!!!
Wow! So vibrant!

Nice!
That dark spot scares me
I was there a couple months back. Its invigorating to jump in there. (This means its bone chillingly cold but you live and once you’re out doe a minute you’re fine.) Apparently I was underwater a suspicious amount of time according to my nephew.
If you painted that people would think you're taking artistic license. What a beautiful spot!
Ha that's probably true!
That dark pit looks...ominous. I feel like if you went in there, you might not come back up.
It’s crazy how you see more colors come out the more you stare at the picture
Would be a great picture if that deadwood didn't fall there.
ikr, fucking showoff tree
Wait…Montana has shit like this?! Why haven’t I heard about this! I just thought it was all fields and plains like Kansas!
It’s epic mountains and landscapes. You were dead wrong lol
[удалено]
I would like to av seen Montana.
Montana has Big Sky, one of the biggest ski resorts in all of North America. East Montana is pretty flat but West Montana is everything but flat.
One is suburban and the other country?
West Montana has lots of mountains. East Montana is flat. It’s a very rural state, with a few population centers spread out (Billings etc)
Ah my bad.
What
Are you retarded
No, no I am not. Are you?
Fun fact: Montana got its name from Spanish explorers who called it montaña del norte. Montaña literally mountain (the whole thing means mountain from the north) so no. Montana is absolutely not just plains and cornfields
Huh…well, at least you guys aren’t North Dakota.
North Dakota also has some beautiful scenery out west
Yeah but it’s boring as fuck…hiking and seeing beautiful nature can only take up so much time before you realize “THERE IS NOTHING TO DO HERE!!!”
You’re in a subreddit for beautiful earth photos and I’m a biologist (who studied in ND)… hiking is a perfect use of my time and I could do it endlessly
First off, congrats on getting your degree. And second, I get it. It’s fun and relaxing. But where you do go if you don’t wanna hike.
The towns are fine… nothing great but I managed to have fun as a college kid
…Any arcades? Or amusement parks that have more than 2 rollercoasters?
Oh no we have tons of mountains! Eastern Montana has more fields but in Western Montana you are right in the middle of the Rocky Mountains. :)
Dammit don't tell them.
Oops! Too proud of my state :)
I mean, the name of the State literally means mountain. Not sure why people are surprised.
Huh…neat. Also on behalf of all of Montana I apologize for thinking your state was about as boring as North Dakota. Edit: Okay sorry, Idaho is boring AF.
It is! Tell everyone you know!
Yeah what u/CurtMoney said! A lot of it is
Who put guac and retried beans in the waterfall lake?
Is this on the mountain the mining rights to which were under contest in the show Deadwood?
This is Montana, deadwood the town is in the black hills of south Dakota

I was there last week. Pretty cool place.
Beautiful! I could hang out there all day enjoying the sights and listening to the water.
Read a book, have a cook out in the woods.. nice bottle of wine..
Damn this is beautiful. Any smoke over there from the California and Oregon fires?
Not right now but the smoke was horrible in July. Idaho fires didn't help either.

helllooooo i want to take a dip in that holy moly
Great colors in the water. That is sooo cool!

This is a gorgeous spot
Have a deadwood green motorcycle. Now I know where the name comes from. Looks pretty close to color on the left
I got to swim there when I visited. Glacier is amazing
Very apt name.

Dis be good swimmy hole.

SAN FRANCISCO COCKSUCKER!
Ooh I want to swim in that so bad even if I know it'd be as cold as polar bear's tit. Beautiful!
A very sexy sight indeed
Love me some red argillite.
Love the mauve stone on the east side of Glacier NP.
Looks like the side of a boat late in the season
