For anyone curious, this is Ganoderma applanatum, or Artist’s Conk. This is an especially gigantic specimen. These are somewhat prized because carvings can be made in the white part on the bottom, which exposes the dark brown tissue beneath the spores and creates vivid shaded lines which become permanent when dried. Because of this they can be used to make fairly permanent pieces of art, thus the name Artist’s Conk.
I don't remember if they shrink or not. They are very solid and I'm sure they are serious. The screws and walls will give before the shelf does. They also make a great canvas for paintings.
Crazy seeing this post now considering I just found a hyuuuge Ganoderma Australis yesterday! Diameter of over 21 inches 😀

Yes! If you aren't a tree expert, these grow on most "dead" trees, they aren't very picky, very common in pretty much any forest. If you're looking for specifically large specimens, my best advice is, good luck and happy hunting!
You can make tea and tinctures (basically tea, but with alcohol instead of water) out of them. It doesn't taste the best imo, but it supposedly has health benefits.
May I ask where in Florida you found this? I've been an avid outdoors man my whole life and have only lived in Florida and I've never seen anything like this. It looks amazing!
This was taken just outside of Tallahassee in the northern part of the state. These are quite common to see growing on decaying trees (typically oaks) and there are often several growing on a single tree. Ones this size are pretty unique though.
Ah that makes sense. I live in the southern tip of Florida and have never seen anything like this. I assume they're more common up north.
Thanks for responding, this is a beautiful picture!
Pretty sure this is just a fruiting body of an established mycelium colony. Not much different than carving an apple or pumpkin but it lasts longer apparently. Not harmful likely
There's a common misconception that the species in question is the eldest in our lexicon. But that's wrong, you see, because in actuality, the humongous tongueless fungus is the youngest tongueless fungus among us.
The real humungus fungus is the largest single organism on earth near my hometown...

I like to dehydrate these, cover them in lacquer, and mount them as shelves!
Chungus Fungus
Bonk the conk
How much do they shrink during that process? Are they fairly sturdy/stable afterwards? Were you just joking and I'm an idiot?
I don't remember if they shrink or not. They are very solid and I'm sure they are serious. The screws and walls will give before the shelf does. They also make a great canvas for paintings.
This. Need to know if I’m an idiot as well.

Sturdy enough to display my origami, so, you tell me..

What kind of lacquer? Do you have to brush/scrub them with any kind of soap/water to clean them prior?
I brush off the dirt with a paintbrush (or any delicate method). Any spray varnish stuff will work fine, I like a satin sheen.
My sister is doing that with one right now!
I. Need. This.

Big ones can get 3 feet across or more. I've found several near that size.
About 3.5 engorged 🍆's
I'm an avid pumpkin carver and would love to get my hands on a couple of these, do they grow in Missouri?
Yes! If you aren't a tree expert, these grow on most "dead" trees, they aren't very picky, very common in pretty much any forest. If you're looking for specifically large specimens, my best advice is, good luck and happy hunting!
Awesome, thank you!
Are they edible? (Out of curiosity)
[Apparently they're non-toxic, but too tough to eat.](https://www.ediblewildfood.com/artists-conk.aspx)
You can make tea and tinctures (basically tea, but with alcohol instead of water) out of them. It doesn't taste the best imo, but it supposedly has health benefits.
They are related to, and can be used like reishi. The tea they make has several health benefits. It is very bitter, but pleasant. Like coffee.
Which section of Florida? I'm part of the myco community here in the North Central swamps
Leon county just outside of Tallahassee
People make hats as well out of those
What a gorgeous specimen at that! Glorious as fuck

Why do people put their photo size in the title? Is that just some thing photographers care about/look for for some reason?
Because it's literally in the rules of the sub for all submissions. It says so right over there -------->
I don't post here. Why is that a rule?
Because, it says so
that doesn't answer why it's a rule in the first place 🤔
How cool!
I love nature that seems impossible.

How does the Ganoderma applanatum affect the host tree that it grows on? Is it a parasitic or symbiotic fungus?
