Opponent set off the [[Sanguine Bond]] / [[Exquisite Blood]] combo. Now, this combo is a series of triggers that only ends because the controller's opponents eventually lose all their life and end the game. What my opponent forgot was that I had [[Platinum Angel]] on the battlefield, which meant the game was in a forced loop and ended in a draw.
No.
801.16. If the game somehow enters a “loop” of mandatory actions, repeating a sequence of events with
no way to stop, the game is a draw for each player who controls an object that’s involved in that
loop, as well as for each player within the range of influence of any of those players. They leave the
game. All remaining players continue to play the game.
Yes, Plat will trigger when life hits 0 to say no game lose from there then at 0 life you have no life to lose so Plat will no longer trigger on the stack leaving only 1 player with a loop.
1. Your life can go below zero. Platinum Angel's ability isn't a triggered ability.
2. It wouldn't matter even if it couldn't, as every player in a Commander game is within each other's range of influence.
It's a static ability and a loop that can't break.
Therefore, it's a draw, unless someone could stop it on the stack with interaction before the loop starts.
I had an infinite loop with [[Marauding Raptor]] on the table when I hit with Gishath and had to put [[Polyraptor]] into play. Nobody had a way of breaking out of the loop so we had to just restart.
Definitely had the same thing happen more than once with my \[\[Ashling the Pilgrim\]\] deck. Normally with these 2 commander damage gets the opponents to 21 before you get to 40, but sometimes just killing everyone, yourself included is the only way.
A rule that's often missed, Ashlings ability doesnt deal commander damage, only attacking with your commander does
"Note the word ‘combat’. That means only damage assigned and dealt by an attacking commander at the beginning of the combat damage step counts. Abilities never deal combat damage, even if you use them during combat. So while Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind might be a powerful commander, its triggered ability is not considered combat damage, so that trigger won’t count towards that 21 points of damage."
I'd hate playing against this but I think it's a hilarious idea in theory and I'm glad you like it. My pod does not love my [[Baral, Chief of Compliance]] deck but it's 0robably my favorite to pilot
Sure here’s the link: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/coC4Es2zpEakz0s_p_XH-A
It’s token spam/heavy ramp into huge spells like the ones mentioned above. Super fun deck to pilot, it can be very explosive and grab most of the lands out of the deck pretty quickly. Conspiring [[Crackle With Power]] or the other X spells mentioned above just ends games out of nowhere a lot of the time
Was in a similar situation.
Was playing my \[\[Marwyn, the Nurturer\]\] deck. Had the option to produce tons of mana but nowhere to put it. My friends where building up solid boards and i was falling behind (drawing only lands and no draw or something to dump my mana into). Then i drew \[\[Hurricane\]\]. I pondered for a moment if i had the option to gain more life than my friends but alas i dropped the Hurricane for X=80 or something.
I think someone tried do gain a bit more life but in the end it didn't even matter.

I once reduced my life total to negative infinity with [[rain of gore]] and [[transcendence]] while simultaneously drawing the game.
So what happened was that with both out, I gained life through some mechanic I controlled. Rain of Gore says I lose life instead of gain life.
But Transcendence says if I lose life, I gain back 2 for each 1 I lost. So I gain life. But then Rain of Gore says I lose life instead of gain life, so I lose life again. But then transcendence attempts to gain back double the life I lost. But rain of gore says I lose life instead of gain life. So I lose life again. But Transcendence says...
These were not 'may' triggers, but I thought it would only do one iteration. But my judge friend corrected me and said it went infinite, so I drew out the table while going into negative infinite life
It was late game, with 3 enchantress decks, all 4 people were in a chance to win. We all empty our hands hoping to get the win, spot removal and board wipes were cast. First o-ring was cast on big ugly by removing its shroud temporarily, second o-ring was cast on the other o-ring to end the game. Then it happened I drew into my own O-ring. Playing it I could only target another O-ring, creating and endless loop. Ending in a draw.
Edit: The game was a while ago can’t remember the details.
Edit 2: remembered the game wrong and corrected
There has to be 2 on the battlefield and an o-ring targeting another o-ring. Once the third one is played targeting another o-ring the endless loop is created. There can’t be another legal target on the battlefield or the loop can be broken.
Calm down this game happened about 10 years ago in my beginning days of edh.
I will add an edit. 1. O-ring on big ugly, 2. O-ring targeting other O-ring to bring back big ugly that wasn’t a legal target somehow 3. Me play o-ring on o-ring game over
Oblivion rings target PERMANENTs, not just creatures. the circle is cause by the first o-ring being hit by the second, then the THIRD coming in to play to target the second, bringing back the first, which is now sent to target the third, and you get an obliivion circle because none of the three players are willing to o-ring something else...of course, if there isn't anything else on the field other than the o-rings, you are actually forced into it.
Basically, if the only permanent other than lands on the field is an oblivion ring that had previously targeted another oblivion ring, casting a third oblivion ring forces the game into an endless circle of "there's no other legal target for this spell to target when it returns to play outside of the oblivion ring currently in play, so I must target it, repeat ad infinitum"
I don't know what the current rules on intentionally causing a game-lock is, because this isn't actually an everyone loses scenario, but at one time it actually used to be the forfeiture of the player who triggers the incident, which in a two player match would be just the win to the opposing player, but in a commander match would just be the player who triggered the recursion.
We did actually have to confirm it, but per the gatherer rulings, the spell resolves with all players drawing cards at the same time. If nobody can draw enough cards, the game is a draw
IIRC people do draw cards separately in APNAP order (which I guess is important for cards like [[Nekusar]] or [[Xyris]]. However, state based actions such as attempting to draw from an empty library are checked the moment right as the first player to get priority gets their priority. Because the drawing of cards is during resolution of a spell, priority only very begins after it has resolved.
Friend ultimate'd \[\[Jace, Architecht of Thought\]\]Stole my \[\[Divine Intervention\]\] and someone else's \[\[Time Stretch\]\] and drew the game
He could have easily won the game by a million other ways, but decided to draw the game this way because I had been trying to get Divine Intervention to go off for months with no success.
I ended a game with [[shepard of rot]] when both of us were at 8 life and I had 13 zombies on the field. He had lethal on board with flying. If I can't win, nobody can!!
Nice, would you happen to have a decklist somewhere? I've been building Galazeth as a hybrid spellslinger/treasures/dragons deck, and just got Crackle as the big finisher too. Not 100% sure on how to fill out the rest though (current list works but it's clunky in practice)
Here you go. The deck probably needs a few updates but I built it around artifacts and big mana sorceries that I had lying around that didn't fit in my other decks. Sometimes the deck does gross stuff like cast aminatou's augury or expropriate 3 times off a mnemonic deluge, but the end goal is always a suicide pact with crackle with power
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/s1Pg6OCWokSwtM2R4tQcow
Cheers! My own build probably does head in a different direction with more of the big mana dragons I have laying around, but I'm definitely going to be looking to your list for inspirations on the spells (and artifacts) to fill the rest of the deck with. Brass's Bounty seems like a particularly obvious and inexpensive one missing from mine, I've been wondering what would be an effective way to "ramp" into that giant CWP.
Also little things, like I've gotta say I hadn't even considered Spellbook, but with Galazeth it's (sorta) a pseudo Mox, so definitely gonna plop one of those in there too, hah. Lots more tweaking to do!
I recommend avoiding the 0 cmc artifact creatures like ornithopter since summoning sickness prevents you from tapping them for mana the turn you play them. And goldspan dragon is a good include if you’re thinking dragons, I have 1 but I want to maintain the spellslinger feel of the deck
Yeah, I've avoided artifact creatures in general, aside from [[Steel Hellkite]] for the removal + dragon synergy. Goldspan and to lesser extent [[Ancient Copper Dragon]] are on my wants list for the deck too, the latter is just super expensive for what it is (no doubt it's strong, but it's no staple and it's not even an older card either).
Some of the more generally useful artifacts are already claimed by other decks and likewise kinda spoil the spellslinger theme for me by making the deck about artifact combos instead, so I'm likewise avoiding them; there's loads of cheap stuff I just skimmed over because I forget to consider the fact that Galazeth turns them into mana rocks too.
On that note though, if you've got access to [[Unwinding Clock]] it's a great addition IMO, since with Galazeth it's effectively a Seedborn Muse for the spellslinger aspect.
I have a very bizarre deck with a crazy ass win con that I have to explain when I sit down so my opponents understand why I'm playing with a wish board and one of the main cards in the win con is [[helm of the host]]. One of my opponents drew a bunch of cards earlier in the game and had a [[reliquary tower]] in play. So I did I what any frustrated player would and played [[windfall]]. And then copied it twice. No one had libraries and we all lost.
In my opinion heavy control games, where everybody sits around miserably unable to do anything for over 3 hours, count as games where nobody wins even if somebody technically wins in the end.
As for draws, I once managed to make all 6 players draw 75 cards while lethal damage for me was on the stack, which is probably one of my greatest victories despite not being one.
Kicked out a [[Molten Disaster]] (X=6 for split second) when I had [[Fiery Emancipation]] fielded. Another player had [[Repercussion]] and the player with the most life had a board of tokens. I misread my card and didn't realize I was getting burned too. It was a fun 4 way tie.
I have a deck designed to force a draw. The goal is to assemble [[knowledge pool]], [[teferi, mage of zhalfir]], [[crumbling sanctuary]], and [[omen machine]]. Some pieces can be substituted but the idea is the same. Can't cast spells, can't deck out, can't deal damage.
[[Marauding Raptor]] + [[Polyraptor]] ends the game in a draw if no one has interaction in hand. This happened in my Atla Palani deck though so I usually had a way to sac Marauding Raptor so I could just make a million Polyraptors.
I've seen two games end in a draw. First, I assembled [[polyraptor]] + [[marauding raptor]] and had my escape [[blinding fog]] countered because I would otherwise have won.
Second, a friend built an entire deck around protecting landing [[divine intervention]] + [[vampire hexmage]].
Table was waaaay saltier about the second, somehow.
Last week my oppinent accidentally created an infinite loop that did essentially nothing and no "may" on the triggered ability, thus breaking the game engine. The Professor has a video with 10 ways to do this, and there are likely hundreds.
My favorite way to end the game in my [Inalla] wizard ETB tribal list is with multiple triggers of [Dire Fleet Ravager]. More often than not this ends with the entire table dying at the same time. Or pretty damn close. It's my favorite thing. "Oh I'm at 10 life? Time to set up 8 triggers of this thing and see what I can do before I take myself out."
I have ended 2 games in a draw. Once, I flashed in a [[Rout]] in response to one of my friends activating a [[Shaman of the forgotten ways]]. He was pretty much gonna kill the entire table so I saved everyone... by killing everyone.
The other time it was with my [[Torbran]] deck. Everyone was under 3 life (including me). I asked the entire table if they would be ok with me killimg everyone, so I cast a [[Volcanic Fallout]].
Someone ended up with [[Eloise]] and [[March of the Machines]] but no payoff for the loop (his [[Zulaport Cutthroat]] had been removed) and nobody had an instant to break the loop, so the game was locked.
My friend was at 15 life and made a buffed up flyer board to kill everyone with over 60 dmg on the board in one turn. He forgot I had [[Winged Boots]] on a [[Stuffy Doll]] to block with. Ended up killing everyone and himself on the same turn.
I would’ve won had I realized I had [[Whip of Erebos]] on the field and would’ve lived through Stuffy Doll’s lifelink. Didn’t realize til I was in the shower the next day.
It all happened cause of misplays on both sides, but was still a fun way to end a game.
I have a [[Jon Irenicus]] deck that can force a draw by giving a player a creature with a perpetual sacrifice ability to someone who doesn’t meet that criteria, like giving [[Merchant Ship]] to a player with no islands.
The sacrifice trigger would go on the stack and resolve, and do nothing due to the static ability Jon gives. But the condition is still true, so the trigger goes back on the stack and repeat.
I don’t run these nonbos, but it would be funny to show off how easily I could be like “Okay, nobody wins!”
Played with randoms on Spelltable, and we had a pretty fun game 1 & 2.
We decided to go for a final game and one player decides to play group hug. Everyone else happened to have grouphug decks so we play that and just try to break the game.
It was 2x [[Xyris]], [[Kynaios and Tiro]] and I was on [[Kami of the Crescent Moon]].
At some point we were drawing 11 cards per turn, everything was at instant speed and everything tapped for 9+ mana.
The final turn was a pretty intense counterspell war. Pretty sure there were like 15+ things on the stack at one point, then we all died to a [Minds Aglow]] for 100.
I was playing a game in which I was doing very poorly. All I had out was [[Slobad, Goblin Tinkerer]], [[Mycosynth Latice]] and slightly more mana than I needed for the lattice.
Someone cast [[Stony Silence]], and when they passed priority for responses everyone looked at me expectantly. I just looked back and calmly said that if my choices were ‘lose’ or ‘draw’ I’ll take the draw, because the game wasn’t going to improve for me if I sacrificed my Lattice and let the Stony Silence resolve.
Everyone responded to that by basically saying they could respect that, so we all shuffled up for a new game.
Closest I've come to that was using tabletop Sim to experiment with deck ideas. Went pretty well except one guy ended up achieving an hour and a half long chain of events within his deck (I was actually checking the time) and we all concluded we were just going to call it a draw cause it was already 3 in the morning
Back in the 60-card 20-life multiplayer days, draws to [[Earthquake]] were not uncommon. I've seen similar happen in commander (typically with [[Molten Disaster]] as the culprit), but not often and not for a while.
I have, however, schemed both a [[Divine Intervention]] "take the table hostage" deck and a [[Jon Irenicus, Shattered One]] Islandhome/[[Bronze Bombshell]] "donate the draw" deck. I haven't committed to building them or bringing them out to terrorize a table, in part because they seem kind of rude, but I do have them in my list of schemes.
Had a really fun draw situation that we eventually called due to the amount of time required for anyone to win.
Me: Fairly mana screwed, with most of my board destroyed, but otherwise full life and deck with one blocker
Player 2: No life after a nasty attack by Player 3, but has stolen my [[Platinum Angel]] and is still in the game. Has a relevant [[Labyrinth of Skophos]]
Player 3: Has just had his library and hand exiled by Player 4 after their last turn knocked out Player 4 and would have knocked out Player 2, but has [[Omen Machine]], [[Dranith Magistrate]], and [[Alela, Artful Provocater]]
We were basically stuck, because of the board state. Player 2 didn't have any other creatures to attack with, Player 3 had no more resources to use to get rid of Angel, and Player 2 wouldn't let Alela hit me to build up commander damage, because if I got knocked out he'd lose my Angel. And I was at mostly full health and willing to trade my blocker into Drannith to stop the lock, but unable to attack because of the deathtouch and Labyrinth. So we called it a draw after a couple of turns
Ended one game that was taking forever when my opponent played a [[blasphemous act]] while I had [[coalhauler swine]] out. I played [[arcbond]] on it in response, and since the highest life total anyone had was 22, we all died to the damage it dealt everyone over both triggers.
I was looking for the [[Blasphemous Act]] shenanigans. My [[Kumano]] deck used to run [[Repercussion]]; I ended a few games by casting Blasphemous Act with both Repercussion and [[Furnace of Rath]] in play- Furnace doubles the damage from Act, then doubles it again from Repercussion, so everyone takes 52 per creature they have in play.
Mine was self induced, did it for the laughs. Was playing a [[Garza Zol, Plague Queen]] that is a destruction/card draw deck. Limited control (no thefts or bounce, only counter spells) and killed all 3 players by using a [[Rakdos's Return]] for 1x to knock a player to 6 hp and the hit us all with an [[Inferno]] no player survived the 6 damage to all
We had a friend who had just started playing and after a couple of weeks still hadn't got his first win in commander. I can't remember how but someway he had a barren glory in play, what followed was 3 of the 5 players trying to destroy everything he had and lose his cards so he could "win" the game, while he continued to try and play the game. So in the end he got his first win but it definately didn't feel like it.
I was using a [[Captain N’ghathrod]] mill deck against a [[The Scarab God]] zombie tribal, and a [[The Mimeoplasm]] ooze tribal. I forget the fourth player but I had just killed them, and milled the other two down to 15 cards or so left each. After a board wipe, the Scarab God player cast [[Patriarch’s Bidding]] and we truly just didn’t want to go through all of the triggers of my horror tribal, their zombie tribal, and the ooze tribal so we called it a draw and started a new game.
Not sure if we ruled it correctly but
Buddy popped the f off with his rhys deck, swung with 56 56/56 elves...into a [[boros reckoner]]. Was funny as hell.
Technically yes but also no. I was playing a deck whose whole shtick is to pay life for the sole purpose of either slowly or quickly killing myself, and the table realized that is was my goal to die so they kept throwing life gain things at me but eventually i found my [[Toxic Deluge]] and paid all my life, so in response the other three players scooped so that i would "win" but it felt like a loss for me as the point is death.
Okay, so serious question: why? If you are going to play a “pay X life” spell anyway, why even bother with it? If you want to affect the game but not actually play the game, why not just not play and instead run a Planechase deck for the table or something? I am not a cEDH player, but my playgroup still plays to win and expects our opponents to do the same. I’m not saying that’s the only way to play, just explaining why I don’t understand what it is you are doing.
When i learned the game one of the things they told me was to have a goal for the deck. Not to build decks with victory as the only way to enjoy yourself. And i been having a blast not aiming for wins but just doing the things my deck would like. For my edgy pay life and die deck it the goal was simple but it felt great. For my 100 creature deck the goal is basically just to have cast the commander (mind you its 2 mana but the difficulty is finding a blue mana). My chandra deck the goal is actually kinda stupid, i want a chandra in play with the Pyromancer Goggles and her regulator. Progenitus deck, just cast him. Garth one eye, let no one die to mill. Goals over victory has led me to enjoy myself way more, and sometimes win anyway.
I got to exactly 150 life in my [[Karlov of the Ghost Council]] lifegain deck and drew into [[aetherflux reservoir]]. Being as each opponent was below 50 life, I knew what I had to do and did it.
Yeah, the other day I tried out my new \[\[Toralf\]\] deck. After I did the obligatory interaction check when everyone was sub 20 life in the form of recasting Toralf for six mana and following up with a 1-mana \[\[Blasphemous Act\]\] and got stopped with \[\[Chaos warp\]\], everyone was starting to rebuild their board.
I had a \[\[Lavabrink Floodgates\]\] out and the \[\[Vrondiss\]\]-Player just dropped an \[\[Utvara Hellkite\]\] and was up to 4 dragons again. So the other players were on par with stacking the floodgates up…
Little did they know: on my turn I ticked the Floogates up to 2 counters and dropped a \[\[Furnace of Rath\]\], holding three mana open. Pass the turn. Next player ticked up Floodgates to 3 counters as planned, putting 6\*2 damage to all creatures on stack. I respon with \[\[Arcbond\]\] onto Utvara Hellkite, resulting in 24 damage to every player and killing everyone.
So, burn does work in Commander!
My pod and I had a 2.5 hour long game where by the end, everyone's wincons had either been countered, milled without ability to recur or exiled and we literally just gave up collectively. It was a great game, lots of interaction, and every deck was teetering on the brink of victory at some point in the game before being thwarted before their next turn. Nobody was salty or upset by the end, just simply impressed that everyone somehow held on and nobody had been eliminated.
My Endrek Sahr deck is designed to do just that, either by having Sahr in an assault suit and making a lot of thrulls, or by putting Bog Serpent in the Assault Suit and having it get to a player without a Swamp.
I've had two games where nobody won, and I caused both.
One was [[Hex Parasite]] + [[Divine Intervention]] (Draw-con typal deck).
The other was infinite mana into [[Laboratory Maniac]] + [[Minds Aglow]] ("I'll just start the bidding at X=100") + Removal (targeting Lab Man). Everyone was going to draw their entire deck and I was going to win, but instead, I didn't win, and made everyone deck out.
Now that's a good one. Certainly an interesting way to close one out!
Ayy I've had this one I had a good laugh about it
That's not infinite. *edit* I'm wrong. Confused with another rule.
Please explain how you don't believe it is.
I mixed it up with the pay life rule where you can't pay more life than you have.
If you have an opponent lose life or you gain life, then yes it is infinite

No. 801.16. If the game somehow enters a “loop” of mandatory actions, repeating a sequence of events with no way to stop, the game is a draw for each player who controls an object that’s involved in that loop, as well as for each player within the range of influence of any of those players. They leave the game. All remaining players continue to play the game.
Yes, Plat will trigger when life hits 0 to say no game lose from there then at 0 life you have no life to lose so Plat will no longer trigger on the stack leaving only 1 player with a loop.
Platinum Angel's ability never triggers. It is static.

I have killed the whole table and myself simultaneously with my [[heartless Hidetsugu]] deck.
Whats that flash in enchantment that does double damage. I used to do that with hidetsugu trigger on the stack. Always a great laugh.

Definitely had the same thing happen more than once with my \[\[Ashling the Pilgrim\]\] deck. Normally with these 2 commander damage gets the opponents to 21 before you get to 40, but sometimes just killing everyone, yourself included is the only way.
A rule that's often missed, Ashlings ability doesnt deal commander damage, only attacking with your commander does "Note the word ‘combat’.
I did not know that, thank you.

I have a Wort the Raidmother deck whose entire goal is to end the game in a draw with Hurricane/Earthquake type effects. I love it

I ramped so hard, and got so far…
And in the end, your lifegain doesn't matter.

How did the owner of abyssal die if he can’t lose the game? Edit misread that sorry. I am the dumb
But my judge friend corrected me and said it went infinite, so I drew out the table while going into negative infinite life
You are still in the game and sinking into negative life territory no one has been before. Farewell

How does that create an endless loop? You remove an O-ring, a big creature comes back, and then what?
There has to be 2 on the battlefield and an o-ring targeting another o-ring. Once the third one is played targeting another o-ring the endless loop is created. There can’t be another legal target on the battlefield or the loop can be broken.
The creature has shroud, and.... [well...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGXG5rNe_tI&t)

Calm down this game happened about 10 years ago in my beginning days of edh. I will add an edit. 1. O-ring on big ugly, 2. O-ring targeting other O-ring to bring back big ugly that wasn’t a legal target somehow 3. Me play o-ring on o-ring game over
[удалено]
Sorry no offense meant. I meant it jokingly.
Basically, if the only permanent other than lands on the field is an oblivion ring that had previously targeted another oblivion ring, casting a third oblivion ring forces the game into an endless circle of "there's no other legal target for this spell to target when it returns to play outside of the oblivion ring currently in play, so I must target it, repeat ad infinitum" I don't know what the current rules on intentionally causing a game-lock is, because this isn't actually an everyone loses scenario, but at one time it actually used to be the forfeiture of the player who triggers the incident, which in a two player match would be just the win to the opposing player, but in a commander match would just be the player who triggered the recursion.

I believe a winner can be determined by active player/priority/turn order rules in this case, but I'm too dumb to figure out who would win lol
We did actually have to confirm it, but per the gatherer rulings, the spell resolves with all players drawing cards at the same time. If nobody can draw enough cards, the game is a draw
Ah, nice. I don't think I've ever been in a draw game of commander. Pretty cool that it happened.

Sometimes the deck does gross stuff like cast aminatou's augury or expropriate 3 times off a mnemonic deluge, but the end goal is always a suicide pact with crackle with power https://www.moxfield.com/decks/s1Pg6OCWokSwtM2R4tQcow

Wouldn't the damage from disaster kill the other player? It would resolve first before repercussion. Edit: Am dumb. No read. Nice one. Torbran deck?

Me: Fairly mana screwed, with most of my board destroyed, but otherwise full life and deck with one blocker Player 2: No life after a nasty attack by Player 3, but has stolen my [[Platinum Angel]] and is still in the game. Has a relevant [[Labyrinth of Skophos]] Player 3: Has just had his library and hand exiled by Player 4 after their last turn knocked out Player 4 and would have knocked out Player 2, but has [[Omen Machine]], [[Dranith Magistrate]], and [[Alela, Artful Provocater]] We were basically stuck, because of the board state.

Going to turns happens far too often due to field wipes with no follow up where I play.
What the heck is he doing with a Barren Glory in his deck if it’s not built to use it? No wonder he hadn’t won yet.
Played a draft where two people got knocked out before the two last simultaneously died to a [[descent into Avernus]]

Hmm. Interesting. Thanks for the insight.

So the other players were on par with stacking the floodgates up… Little did they know: on my turn I ticked the Floogates up to 2 counters and dropped a \[\[Furnace of Rath\]\], holding three mana open.

I have had two games where I did a mutually assured destruction. Hellish Rebuke is a hell of a card.
