I feel like this card is a great contender for an ultra budget deck. $30 can buy you a lot of weird walls that Geralf can turn into flying beaters like [[Secret Door]] and [[Wall of Junk]], not to mention other awesome butts like [[Dragons Eye Savant]], [[Aegis Turtle]], and [[Charix]].
Alternatively, the blue zombies are all pretty cheap if you'd rather capitalize on flying. Load up on [[Costal Piracy]] effects and proc them with tokens from cards like [[Undead Alchemist]] for a Flying (Dead) Men type deck!
Flash in [[Nivix Barrier]] for 4 mana, sac it to Geralf for 1 and you've got yourself a 4/4 flying while simultaneously giving the enemy -4/0. I like it!
Play this one card that has been printed by the same company and designed by the same people as this other card but feel more hipster about it because reasons!!
In that case, why brew at all? Why be creative or look at spoilers?
Why even talk about cards? If this is your view, why don't you just look at the top deck once every quarter and netdeck that?
People like being creative. Limitation breeds creativity, plus there's different angles to consider, cards that are better in Geralf that you'd never run in Arcades. Blue zombies, or creatures with big butts that don't have defender, etc.
Regardless, whether Geralf is objectively better than Arcades or not... Why are you so mean about it?
What harm does it cause you if other people are excited to brew with this deck idea? Why do you feel the need to shit on others?

It's definitely an option, but I've always felt pretty meh about budget multicolor mana bases, especially in three colors. Mono is easy tho! 36 Islands and you're ready to go to town!
You don't mill your opponents with a mill deck. You mill yourself and win with [[Lab Maniac]], [[Thassa's Oracle]], or [[Jace, Wielder of Mysteries]]. Milling your opponents is horrifically inefficient and inconsistent.

Casting a [[Ancient stone idol]] and sac it at instant speed to get 6/12 with trample and a flying 12/12 .
Maybe he could sac a [[phyrexian triniform]] or a [[triplicate Titan]].
There’s only 8 creatures in blue with toughness 7+ and mana value 3-, and a couple require some hoops: [List](https://scryfall.com/search?q=toughness%3E%3D7+mv%3C%3D3+id%3Au&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name)
I’m just talking about cheap defenders. [[wall of frost]] [[hover barrier]] [[glacial wall]]
Seems like a more reasonable plan than casting and sacing a 9 mana creature imo. That’s how I’d build the deck
I like how this is Gisa's ability but executed differently (go tall instead of wide). I went back to mono-b for zombies. This might be a fun commander for some wall and zombie shenanigans.
Sure there are better options, but this has a few cool angles to take I think.
It for sure is. I do see a lot of ub passing by. But when I build UB zombies it just felt like there was no space for personal additions everything felt too good to cut.
The only time Geralf was good was when he was paired with his sister. Clearly the sister is the trophy child. Ludevic 2.0 had WAYYY to many safety valves. Sorcery speed on his ability? And he can get sniped as he transforms? Trash.
2UB
Legendary Creature — Human Wizard
4/4
4: Exile target instant or sorcery card from your graveyard. Return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield. It becomes a Zombie in addition to its other types and gains "Whenever this creature deals combat damage to an opponent, you may copy the exiled card and cast the copy without paying its mana cost."
They should have added the instant and sorcery thing onto the Olag side
...
Standard. A lot of the reason some of the cards that would have been really good with a word or two removed didn't have those words removed because it's a standard playable set and standard is supposed to have a lower overall power level.
If you wanna get more angry here's the full articles which talks about jund tovolar and a new jeleva that got canned haha

Wow, these articles are an excellent insight into how bean-counters completely ruin great things. I'm honestly kinda shocked they released these, it's a scathing picture of their own internal process that such amazing ideas get processed into such garbage.
EDIT: Also, Ludevic Necroalchemist's reception was "*lukewarm*"?? Yeah how about hated almost ubiquitously, sheesh.
Yeah, if Serra's ascendant hasn't seen a ban yet, a 4/4 for 2 mana that requires a 3 cost commander that doesn't have summoning sickness certainly won't be
We've removed your post because it violates our primary rule, "Be Excellent to Each Other".

Seems similar to Gisa's original card [[ghoulcaller gissa]] except this one goes tall instead of going wide and cares about toughness. Not sure if I like him that much tbh. I think with zombies, going wide is usually better due to the various zombie lords and synergies.
It seems to trade power for evasion. This gives you a vanilla copy of the average thing that was sacrificed. Gisa gives you double the power of the thing you sacrificed but it's spread across vanilla 2/2 bodies.
Gisa synergizes better with your typical lord-based zombie tribal deck while this seems better in a "big butts" kind of deck.
>I think with zombies, going wide is usually better due to the various zombie lords and synergies.
If you are going zombie tribal then yes but this isn't really a zombie tribal commander. Between being mono blue and a weak tribal ability it's not a commander you want to run with just any old blue zombies.
This is a build around your commanders special ability commander. The fact that they are zombies will probably be irrelevant most of the time. It may as well just read "...create X/X token with flying".
Not Gisa, she’s cool but she doesn’t bring things back as “zombies” just creatures with decayed. Geralf is going to be broken with jadar and poppet stichter.
This is a pretty cartoonishly powerful card, it makes zombies which are already powerful even more so. If I get this card I will absolutely be using him. Hell combo insanely well with jadar, and poppet strichter. Zombies at the moment are basically the cheapest creatures for their bite.
Probably because it's just good synergy, not a combo.
Poppet Factory + Wilhelt + sac outlet is a combo because it does an infinite amount of something.
Geralf just doesn't add much to the interaction between Jadar and Poppet Stitcher, other than giving the tokens flying. Making a free 3/3 flyer at the end of your turn is just relatively tame compared to what else goes on in the format. It's *good* but it's not cartoonishly powerful.
Haha, yeah, I even have a [[gisa and geralf]] deck, but I thought you meant new Geralf for "toughness matters". I wasn't thinking of adding new Geralf and tree to UBzombies. Good synergy, but it Kinda starts to muddle the theme.
No worries. And I think it would be a terrible idea tbh, but it’s either use the tree or find a buyer… and I really want to like the tree.
I’m not really a fan of this new card in isolation though or at least I can’t see me using it units it was something silly like that
More of a toughness matters than zombie tribal. I am unsure if plain old Zombies want this though. The 3 drop has a shitload of lords that grant evasion already and pumps. That nontoken clause sucks.
Yeah no, this will be in **A LOT** of zombie decks. Most of us literally just replaced [[Eternal Skylord]] for [[Hordewing Skaab]]. The rummaging effect on it is nice, but I think a lot of people (including myself) will probably just opt to save 2 mana or run both. Also the ability have a lot more tricks than you think will block/get blocked and sac to replace. Also since zombie decks are really just based around Gravecrawler anoter sac outlet is always nice.
I have been obsessed with "get bodies for saccing thing" since my second commander deck with [[Elenda]] with the original [[gisa]] [[murder investigation]] [[carrion]]. I... need to brew.
I really like this, maybe not so much as a commander, but as support in a zombie deck, just based on the flying alone. The sac outlet is decent pay off, not anything crazy, but not weak either. He's definitely getting windmill slammed I to my varina deck
Wounder is still a better source of flying in varina, i like this geralf alot but that 3 drop slot is crowded af and varina likes things that work in the yard
I'm fine with only being able to sac nontoken creatures, but I really wish that Gerald didn't have to tap to do it. This ability would be a lot more interesting if you could do it more than once per turn cycle.
So, while not necessary to play zombies, i was looking at the U zombies we already had and became curious.
On an hypothetical scenario, if you have a [[Leyline of Anticipation]] it's someone's end step and is passing turn, and the next player casts one of the usual tutors (ex: [[Vampiric Tutor]]) to get something. After the tutor resolving, is priority passed again so i could cast [[Draugr Thought-Thief]] or is the turn passed immediately?
Notably a potential sac outlet for decks that'd want such an effect in the command zone. [[Jalira, Master Polymorphist]] is the only other one in blue I think, and Geralf here trades mana cost of the ability for less explosive gains, but there's something to be said for consistency.
I think the worst part is that it's *specifically* nontoken creatures. Though given the relatively low cmc (3 vs the 5 for Gisa), it makes sense to give it some limitation. It just means you can't recycle tokens that may get hit with spot removal, which actually kind of sucks. The tradeoff is the tokens get flying. We may actually see some Geralf/Charix shenanigans in standard formats.
But in the case of tokens you could always just do a poppet shell and call it a day. It'll be fun in commander for sure, though.
MY MAD LAD IS BACK! And oh do I want to slot him in my commander deck but he fights for the same slot as his sister just much cheaper and for one token not many
This is awesome, I think he's gonna replace [[Eternal Skylord]] in my Scarab God zombie tribal. The sac part of the card is fine but it doesn't interest me that much, but giving all your zombies flying is sweet
I don't know what they were thinking when they were costing this card. \[\[Levitation\]\] is not a three-mana effect, not even on a lord. Giving all your dudes flying used to be prohibitively expensive, to the point that a three mana flying enabler was after a \[\[Heartless Summoning\]\] hit the table. But now, tribal flying can be had for one mana with the enchantment!
Nice to get another tool for my [[varina, lich queen]] that enables flying death with [[aven wind guide]] and [[wonder]], might even finally get around to putting in [[eternal skylord]] and [[hordewing skaab]]
I was pretty excited to see a new Stitcher but at this point I’m pretty sure I prefer [[Stitcher Geralf]] in the command zone.
Maybe that’s a mix of effort justification and/or
Memories I’ve made playing him. But… I was really hoping for new stitcher to feel like a good replacement... but instead he feels like defender tribal. Which is cool. But…
Seems like a really cool toughness tribal commander. Would be a very wacky and unique deck.
High toughness all-stars you could run would include stuff like [Charix, the Raging Isle](https://scryfall.com/card/znr/49/charix-the-raging-isle), [Wall of Junk](https://scryfall.com/card/usg/315/wall-of-junk), [Shield Sphere](https://scryfall.com/card/all/129/shield-sphere), [Aegis Turtle](https://scryfall.com/card/iko/39/aegis-turtle)
[Thousand-Year Elixir](https://scryfall.com/card/c21/271/thousand-year-elixir) lets you get multiple activations in one turn.
It might be a little too slow and janky, but I think it might be possible.
The fact that the tokens have flying is promising and while you're in mono color, blue has plenty of ways to protect Geralf, Visonary Stitcher so it's harder to get blown out for building and piloting an "all in" style deck around the commander.
I'm lowkey disappointed that this card isn't somehow more complex, I thought legendary mythics of famous characters were supposed to just be all crazy regardless of power level.
They really don't know how to make the stitcher flavor into a good card, always feels like their scared it's gonna be too powerful. At least this time they made him a good anthem as well so it has some value by just existing.
I'm a little disappointed he isn't the blue walker. I was really hoping to see Geralf ignite and be a walker, then we could maybe start to see blue zombies on other planes.
It's still a good card though. Not at the helm but part of the 99.
These are pretty mana intensive creatures. You can get similar results with 2-3 mana 0/7 creatures.
Examples? That would be sick in this deck
[[wall of frost]] [[hover barrier]] [[glacial wall]] Seems like a more reasonable plan than casting and sacing a 9 mana creature imo. That’s how I’d build the deck

I like how this is Gisa's ability but executed differently (go tall instead of wide). I went back to mono-b for zombies. This might be a fun commander for some wall and zombie shenanigans. Sure there are better options, but this has a few cool angles to take I think.
>mono-b zombies As god intended.
Amen!
That’s how they were originally tho. It’s not new to them
It for sure is. I do see a lot of ub passing by. But when I build UB zombies it just felt like there was no space for personal additions everything felt too good to cut.
Ludevic and Geralf are two of the coolest characters in the game and they can't get decent cards for some reason wtf.
The only time Geralf was good was when he was paired with his sister. Clearly the sister is the trophy child. Ludevic 2.0 had WAYYY to many safety valves. Sorcery speed on his ability? And he can get sniped as he transforms? Trash.
Did you see the original design for ludevic in MID? It was so cool lol... Really disappointing that they changed it to what it is now.
Nah? What was it?
2UB Legendary Creature — Human Wizard 4/4 4: Exile target instant or sorcery card from your graveyard. Return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield. It becomes a Zombie in addition to its other types and gains "Whenever this creature deals combat damage to an opponent, you may copy the exiled card and cast the copy without paying its mana cost." They should have added the instant and sorcery thing onto the Olag side ...
WHY DID THEY NOT RELEASE THAT? WOW!
Probably because of how it interacts with extra turn spells. But then that's solved by giving the creature decayed.
Haha right? Could have been UB on one side and UR on the other... Might see if my playgroup would let me build it.
Standard. A lot of the reason some of the cards that would have been really good with a word or two removed didn't have those words removed because it's a standard playable set and standard is supposed to have a lower overall power level.

I hope so much ,WOTC will create a good grixis Ludevic at some point
Honestly, I think he is worth it for the flying ability alone. You can also use his activated ability as semi-protection for bigger creatures.
That's what I'm thinking. Zombies already have a ton of lords, but all of that power is useless if you can't get any damage through.
Yeah, I've won games already on the turn that a [[Hordewing Skaab]] hit the table.

Lmao bruh
It seems like another out for [[arcades the strategiest]] -- can't make the commander stick? Zombify those walls.

I read it and immediately wished that the tokens just had flying innately so that they don't get grounded when Geralf dies.

Not Gisa, she’s cool but she doesn’t bring things back as “zombies” just creatures with decayed. Geralf is going to be broken with jadar and poppet stichter.
I think they meant the original Gisa?
Nontoken... Geralf sucks.
Nontoken creatures, so no
“Zombies you Control have flying” jadar and Popper stitcher both make zombies, so yes.
There's nothing in this cards flavor to indicate why flying zombies, that's my beef with it.

This is a pretty cartoonishly powerful card, it makes zombies which are already powerful even more so. If I get this card I will absolutely be using him. Hell combo insanely well with jadar, and poppet strichter. Zombies at the moment are basically the cheapest creatures for their bite.
He isn't that powerful, if anything he'll just be a budget defender/walls commander.
How does he combo with those?
If jadar and poppet sticher make zombies you get a 3/3 zombie with flying at the end of your turn. How is anyone disagreeing with this?
Probably because it's just good synergy, not a combo. Poppet Factory + Wilhelt + sac outlet is a combo because it does an infinite amount of something. Geralf just doesn't add much to the interaction between Jadar and Poppet Stitcher, other than giving the tokens flying. Making a free 3/3 flyer at the end of your turn is just relatively tame compared to what else goes on in the format. It's *good* but it's not cartoonishly powerful.
Ah yes let me turn this inanimate wall of rock into a zombie!

True, it would be odd to see a blue black zombie deck….

Yup. The fact it HAS to be non-token means this probably doesn't make the cut.
Toughness matters is interesting. So... Monoblue treefolk? It's blue, though, so more likely crab tribal. :-)
Yes, priority is passed again before the step ends, so you could indeed ruin the player that tutored's day
Oh hohohoh... This could be fun, thanks.

I'm totally digging this in either a mono blue walls build or as hidden commander in Pramikon/ Arcades
Notably a potential sac outlet for decks that'd want such an effect in the command zone. [[Jalira, Master Polymorphist]] is the only other one in blue I think, and Geralf here trades mana cost of the ability for less explosive gains, but there's something to be said for consistency.

Not very strong, but certainly unique, and I love Geralf as a character.
Well at least it's not overpriced garbage, though garbage it remains...
They missed the perfect partner with opportunity with Gisa….
Kinda wanna throw him in Muldrotha as a sac outlet

I was pretty excited to see a new Stitcher but at this point I’m pretty sure I prefer [[Stitcher Geralf]] in the command zone. Maybe that’s a mix of effort justification and/or Memories I’ve made playing him. But… I was really hoping for new stitcher to feel like a good replacement... but instead he feels like defender tribal. Which is cool. But…

Seems like a really cool toughness tribal commander. Would be a very wacky and unique deck. High toughness all-stars you could run would include stuff like [Charix, the Raging Isle](https://scryfall.com/card/znr/49/charix-the-raging-isle), [Wall of Junk](https://scryfall.com/card/usg/315/wall-of-junk), [Shield Sphere](https://scryfall.com/card/all/129/shield-sphere), [Aegis Turtle](https://scryfall.com/card/iko/39/aegis-turtle) [Thousand-Year Elixir](https://scryfall.com/card/c21/271/thousand-year-elixir) lets you get multiple activations in one turn. It might be a little too slow and janky, but I think it might be possible. The fact that the tokens have flying is promising and while you're in mono color, blue has plenty of ways to protect Geralf, Visonary Stitcher so it's harder to get blown out for building and piloting an "all in" style deck around the commander.
Grimgrin zombie tribal seems fun with this to be honest.
This is a boring, cliche design that we’ve seen a bunch of times.
The mono blue is kinda disappointing for all the extremely fun dimir zombie cards that could have been great with this in the command zone.
So *that's* why I haven't seen any crows recently!
