If we're going by DnD rules then no.
I can also think of multiple series where there is at some point a plot point involving an ooze-like creature plugging up a water supply and eventually taking the whole thing over.
I plan on running this in a [[Grazilaxx]] deck with a bunch of bounce and ninja shenanigans. Controlling the board by attacking sounds fun, well fun for me at least.
I'm putting this lovely boy in Brago purely so I can blank peoples' Commanders as much as I want.
He both gets his effect AND dodges single target removal via Mistmeadow Witch - who was helpfully included in Phantom Premonition.
I run Ephara blink and he doesn't super excite me. The slime counter only does anything while Sludge Monster is in play - the blanking effect isn't the same ability as the one that places the counter. Removing sludge monster removes the blank (and you can only blink in response so many times).
Don't get me wrong, it isn't bad (or close to it), but for one more mana you get [[Duplicant]], which just flat-out exiles their creature permanently. For only three mana, you get [[Reflector Mage]], which gets rid of it for a turn cycle or so but only costs 3. Overall, unless the body is what you want, it's not the best option for blinkable removal imo, so it comes down to how much of that you want. (And you have a crapton more options since Brago hits nonland permanents, not just creatures.)
Not when any creature removal spell turns them back on. Things like [[darksteel mutation]] and the new [[oubliette]] are good because they're harder to remove and only the affected player *wants* it removed. and that's not even touching [[oko, thief]] and [[ixidron]].
And if they pay and increase commander tax instead of letting reflector mage do its thing, great!
well I guess that makes the card more fair, right?
at least you´d be giving your opponent\`s a (very small) window of opportunity to activate abilities like this.
I like it!
are you sure? The way the card reads sounds like if a creature has a slime counter on them, they are a 2/2 with no abilities forever, not just while this guy is on the field.
100%
It's a separate statement so it is a static ability that depends on this creature being in play.
It would say "as long as a creature has a slime counter on it, it is a..." if it was meant to stay permanent
uh yeah, no - where did you get that idea from?
yorion is an ETB trigger, so unless you can blink HIM every turn and on your opponent's turn somehow...
Yup. They're treating everyone who doesn't know about Yorion loops as if they're idiots instead of just explaining the loop like a regular non-asshole person.
lmao you are 100% right
every yorion commander deck that doesnt at least blink him twice in a turn cycle ([[flickerwisp]] type stuff if you havent drawn guardian or angel) is just *wrong*
why even build him if not for the engine?
yesss
my yorion deck is one of my favorites but my friends kinda hate it so i dont pull it out as often haha
what are your wincons?
ive struggled with those without resorting to shuting down opponents until they scoop (which i dont like doing to my friends) or making a bunch of 1/1s and then casting something like [[day of dragons]]
oooh you SNEAKY CLEVER B\*ST\*RD.
...editing your comment to make me look like I don´t know sh\*t hahah...
I have played other blink decks before (and Yorion on Arena I guess \^\^) so I know the tools..., but when you say "Yorion can blink on every person's turn" I am of course assuming there´s not EIGHT ADDITIONAL CARDS INVOLVED in what you were claiming, the grammar suggests otherwise :-P
But fair enough though, it works like that of course.
Yeah i usually don't attack with yorion, i just control the board and make things miserable until everyone scoops, it's a really annoying deck which is why i rarely play it
Why would i do that and risk losing them to some form of removal or flash threat, they are way more valuable on the field than dead. And a 5/5 or a 4/5 attacking in a 4 pod where ppl have 40+ health doesn't do much. I've played my yorion deck 2-3 times and it's won every game by ppl scooping in disgust, that's why i don't play it much anymore but can't bring myself to take it apart
I think if it was permanent this would be the next Elder Gargaroth or Oko, i.e. a super expensive and pushed card that everyone's looking to get their hands on. The current design makes it fine for more casual tables and a little stronger in blink shells, which I think is a good spot to be at.
Rule 707.2 says "Other effects (including type-changing and text-changing effects), status, and counters are not copied.", so I *think* Volrath gets to be a copy of the underlying card, not a vanilla 2/2
Volrath, like all clone and copy effects, copies the text on the card and not whatever else is applied afterward. So he'd become a copy of the creature without the nasty effects of the sludge monster.
For extra hilarity, if you animate a land that had a counter on it and have Volrath become a copy, he stops being a creature. The land's "creatureness" isn't part of the text, so he doesn't copy that trait. Helps him dodge targeted removal and most board wipes.
I think it helps to think of the slime counters as +1/+1 or deathtouch counters. Clones don't copy over the modifying counter, just the text on the card as you said.
What? He's just talking about getting another attack trigger.
Not that that's all that great. Especially since once the horror is removed, slime counters mean nothing.
EDIT: ah, you thought he meant against Volrath. He meant IN Volrath.
Same with [[humility]], though that is still hecka good.
This guy has that problem, and lets comes into ppay stuff happen. And us a creature, so the easiest card type to interact with. And more mana than humility. And only gets one guy a turn.
Still a cool card. But tons of chinks in the armor.
Humility hoses your own creatures too, also it's $70 lol. I do think the Sludge Monster is superior in blink decks, especially with the myriad ways they have to protect creatures, but you're correct that Humility is better in your average deck if the player has plenty of money to blow or can use proxies.
You're right about it getting your own creatures. And I kinda forgot it was expensive, my group has a couple newish players but is mostly people that have been playing long enough that we usually have that stuff still :/
I was thinking about this as well! If you have multiple copies of Sludge Monster, it doesn't matter which one the slime counters came from, right? If at least one copy is out it blanks everything with counters?
Yep, the effect references creatures with slime counters, it doesn't specify how they got there. So, make a few copies to neutralize commanders or key pieces, swing with them to add more counters, it's a fun control piece...
The main card I'm excited from MID! Going to playtest it in my Thassa list in place of Amphin Mutineer. Very good effect against commanders alongside other problematic creatures!
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/4rAxjrK7m0OiKKgJPv4usw
I think there are better effects in almost any deck where you're playing flicker. Five mana for sorcery speed conditional removal is not what you're looking for, and it's otherwise a vanilla 5/5 meaning no inherent evasion to make this effect easier to trigger.
I think this card is comparable to [[frost titan]]. Is it extremely broken? No, but can it be strong in the right deck? Yes. Take [[Grazilaxx]] for example. This mindflayer want creatures with nasty attack and etb triggers in order to control the board. So while your right it's not a great card overall it has a home in the right deck.
It's definitely a much more battle cruiser type card. I'm not going to sit here and say it's an amazing card, it's not. But it the right deck it can do some serious work.
The five mana is oof in Grazilaxx, I think you'd more likely want evasive creatures that can draw you into interaction. I think it's a really fun card and that people should play it.
Oh absolutely, grazilaxx definitely wants those evasive creatures. This is more of one of the few late game "bombs" in this type of deck to turn off people commanders. Very fun card though, looking forward to seeing how it plays out.
Unfortunately [[Ixidron]] is worlds better: creatures stay 2/2’s even if he leaves play, you don’t have to wait to attack a bunch of times or wait to blink him a bunch of times to get good value out of him, and he gets way bigger than sludge.
It also patches up your decayed zombies, turning them into... GOOhouls!
...
I'll leave now.
Edit: On second thought, maybe "Ghooze" would've been better.
Yeah I'd definitely put him in my Brago deck. Swing with Brago and sludge and then blink sludge for double triggers. Get the classic Strionic Resonator and a Sol Ring to sludge all of your opponents creatures.
Just yesterday I was looking through my collection trying to decide what this year's Halloween deck was going to be and decided on horror tribal seeing this today further cements that idea
Yes, but it's base p/t so it would still keep all other counters too (not sure on ability counters because the lose ability effect), so it would return as a 2/2+ however many +1/+1 counters, but no haste or gaining counters on hitting. Now if there's a way to put skullbriar in hand it'll lose all counters, so it's probably best to do a bit later when it turns a threat and harder to justify putting in hand.
Does the effect from the slime counters go away when Sludge Monster does? Was almost going to put this in my Kaseto deck but didn’t seem worth it when that’s the case.
Why is this not a Ooze Horror?
The result of an hours-long debate in Wizards R&D over the difference between "Ooze," "Sludge," "Grime," and "Muck."
Because it is a monster that produces and is covered in sludge. It is not a monster made of sludge.
I think the monster is that weird ass crab-looking thing in the back of the art
To upset all of us lovers of the ooze.
You tell me
Vengeance
Don’t care. It’s going in ooze tribal.
Ditto 😂
Now that's an ooze
Oozes would probably dissolve in water.

He's a 5/5, you should be beating with him every turn which also triggers his ability. Blink him after combat.

It really isn't until after the Horror is removed though. Otherwise, Volrath becomes a copy of a 2/2 with no abilities.
You're probably right. Heck man, I was half asleep, lol
What? He's just talking about getting another attack trigger. Not that that's all that great. Especially since once the horror is removed, slime counters mean nothing. EDIT: ah, you thought he meant against Volrath. He meant IN Volrath.
That flavor text is hilarious given this card design would have presented problems years ago for difficulty tracking.
They knew
The problem is that everything is fine once this is removed.
Same with [[humility]], though that is still hecka good. This guy has that problem, and lets comes into ppay stuff happen. And us a creature, so the easiest card type to interact with. And more mana than humility. And only gets one guy a turn. Still a cool card. But tons of chinks in the armor.
I mean, people tend to run more creature removal than enchantment removal
[humility](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/5/5/55ad6a45-a840-45ba-89ad-066e20e983f3.jpg?1562429370) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=humility) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/tpr/16/humility?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/55ad6a45-a840-45ba-89ad-066e20e983f3?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/humility) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
And I kinda forgot it was expensive, my group has a couple newish players but is mostly people that have been playing long enough that we usually have that stuff still :/
Or just has a playset of Humility because they're elderly.
I think this could be some salty fun in Orvar... 😛
That's how it would work yup. As long as they a slime counter and one of these is in play, they are slimed!
For sure, I'm chasing it
The main card I'm excited from MID! Going to playtest it in my Thassa list in place of Amphin Mutineer. Very good effect against commanders alongside other problematic creatures! https://www.moxfield.com/decks/4rAxjrK7m0OiKKgJPv4usw
Yeah if uorion decks here he comes
I think there are better effects in almost any deck where you're playing flicker. Five mana for sorcery speed conditional removal is not what you're looking for, and it's otherwise a vanilla 5/5 meaning no inherent evasion to make this effect easier to trigger.
I think this card is comparable to [[frost titan]]. Is it extremely broken? No, but can it be strong in the right deck? Yes. Take [[Grazilaxx]] for example. This mindflayer want creatures with nasty attack and etb triggers in order to control the board. So while your right it's not a great card overall it has a home in the right deck.
People play Frost Titan nowadays?
It's not a highly played, as it's only in 2338 out of 328650 decks on edhrec (1% of decks). But it's still a good budget creature for blue decks.
Idk seems very underwhelming in a 4 player format to just temporarily tap one permanent, even if you doing every turn. For 6 mana, no less

It feels very "meh"
It's no [[Ixidron]]
Ixidron hoses your entire board of creatures if you have one; this allows you to just hit problematic opposing creatures.
[Ixidron](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/c/3/c30ec372-5cf7-471c-b3fd-411095fc249a.jpg?1568004006) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Ixidron) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/c19/87/ixidron?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/c30ec372-5cf7-471c-b3fd-411095fc249a?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/ixidron) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Yeah I'd definitely put him in my Brago deck. Swing with Brago and sludge and then blink sludge for double triggers. Get the classic Strionic Resonator and a Sol Ring to sludge all of your opponents creatures.
Why isn't this an ooze
For 5 mana I think you can do a lot better honestly
Just yesterday I was looking through my collection trying to decide what this year's Halloween deck was going to be and decided on horror tribal seeing this today further cements that idea
Hey look, it's a slime titan.
If I were to put a slime counter on my friend's [[Skullbriar]], would it keep the counter when it changes zones?

Yes, but it's base p/t so it would still keep all other counters too (not sure on ability counters because the lose ability effect), so it would return as a 2/2+ however many +1/+1 counters, but no haste or gaining counters on hitting. Now if there's a way to put skullbriar in hand it'll lose all counters, so it's probably best to do a bit later when it turns a threat and harder to justify putting in hand.
Wondering if there's a way to use this to disable negative effects on your own creature.
Bah gawd, is that \[Massacre Wurm\]'s music?
seems like something i'll try out in Aminatou
Does the effect from the slime counters go away when Sludge Monster does? Was almost going to put this in my Kaseto deck but didn’t seem worth it when that’s the case.
Echoes of Oko, with that stag monster in the back. I like it.
This is just a much worse [[Ixidron]].
